AADG: Automatic Augmentation for Domain Generalization on Retinal Image SegmentationJunyan Lyu, Yiqi Zhang, Yijin Huang et al.
Convolutional neural networks have been widely applied to medical image segmentation and have achieved considerable performance. However, the performance may be significantly affected by the domain gap between training data (source domain) and testing data (target domain). To address this issue, we propose a data manipulation based domain generalization method, called Automated Augmentation for Domain Generalization (AADG). Our AADG framework can effectively sample data augmentation policies that generate novel domains and diversify the training set from an appropriate search space. Specifically, we introduce a novel proxy task maximizing the diversity among multiple augmented novel domains as measured by the Sinkhorn distance in a unit sphere space, making automated augmentation tractable. Adversarial training and deep reinforcement learning are employed to efficiently search the objectives. Quantitative and qualitative experiments on 11 publicly-accessible fundus image datasets (four for retinal vessel segmentation, four for optic disc and cup (OD/OC) segmentation and three for retinal lesion segmentation) are comprehensively performed. Two OCTA datasets for retinal vasculature segmentation are further involved to validate cross-modality generalization. Our proposed AADG exhibits state-of-the-art generalization performance and outperforms existing approaches by considerable margins on retinal vessel, OD/OC and lesion segmentation tasks. SortedRL: Accelerating RL Training for LLMs through Online Length-Aware SchedulingYiqi Zhang, Huiqiang Jiang, Xufang Luo et al. · microsoft-research
Scaling reinforcement learning (RL) has shown strong promise for enhancing the reasoning abilities of large language models (LLMs), particularly in tasks requiring long chain-of-thought generation. However, RL training efficiency is often bottlenecked by the rollout phase, which can account for up to 70% of total training time when generating long trajectories (e.g., 16k tokens), due to slow autoregressive generation and synchronization overhead between rollout and policy updates. We propose SortedRL, an online length-aware scheduling strategy designed to address this bottleneck by improving rollout efficiency and maintaining training stability. SortedRL reorders rollout samples based on output lengths, prioritizing short samples forming groups for early updates. This enables large rollout batches, flexible update batches, and near on-policy micro-curriculum construction simultaneously. To further accelerate the pipeline, SortedRL incorporates a mechanism to control the degree of off-policy training through a cache-based mechanism, and is supported by a dedicated RL infrastructure that manages rollout and update via a stateful controller and rollout buffer. Experiments using LLaMA-3.1-8B and Qwen-2.5-32B on diverse tasks, including logical puzzles, and math challenges like AIME 24, Math 500, and Minerval, show that SortedRL reduces RL training bubble ratios by over 50%, while attaining 3.9% to 18.4% superior performance over baseline given same amount of data.

Nex-N1: Agentic Models Trained via a Unified Ecosystem for Large-Scale Environment ConstructionNex-AGI Team, Yuxuan Cai, Lu Chen et al.
The evolution of Large Language Models (LLMs) from passive responders to autonomous agents necessitates a fundamental shift in learning paradigms -- from static imitation to incentive-driven decision making. However, this transition is significantly impeded by the lack of scalable infrastructure capable of constructing high-quality interaction signals for effective policy learning. To address this, we introduce a comprehensive method designed to systematically scale the diversity and complexity of interactive environments. Our method realizes this scaling by addressing three orthogonal dimensions: (1) Complexity: NexAU, a flexible agent framework that supports building complex agent hierarchies via simple configurations; (2) Diversity: NexA4A automatically generates diverse agent hierarchies from natural language to cover infinite domains; and (3) Fidelity: NexGAP bridges the simulation-reality gap by integrating dynamic real-world environment for grounded trajectories synthesis. We train Nex-N1 upon the diverse and complex interactive environments established by our infrastructure. Empirical results on benchmarks such as SWE-bench and tau2 demonstrate that Nex-N1 consistently outperforms SOTA open-source models and achieves competitive performance against frontier proprietary models on complex agentic tasks. We open-source the Nex ecosystem and model weights to facilitate further research.

PlexRL: Cluster-Level Orchestration of Serviceized LLM Execution for RLVRYiqi Zhang, Fangzheng Jiao, Tian Tang et al.
Reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR) has recently unlocked strong reasoning capabilities in large language models (LLMs), triggering rapid exploration of new algorithms and data. However, RLVR training is notoriously inefficient: long-tailed rollouts, tool-induced stalls, and asymmetric resource requirements between rollout and training introduce substantial idle time that cannot be eliminated by job-local optimizations such as synchronous pipelining, asynchronous rollout, or colocated execution. We argue that this inefficiency is structural. While idle gaps are unavoidable within individual RLVR jobs, they are largely anti-correlated across jobs and therefore exploitable at the cluster level. Leveraging this observation, we present PlexRL, a cluster-level runtime for multiplexing unified LLM services across RLVR jobs. By centrally managing model placement, state transitions, and function-level scheduling under strict affinity constraints, PlexRL time-slices LLM execution across jobs to fill otherwise idle periods without expensive model migration. Our implementation and evaluations demonstrate that PlexRL significantly improves effective cluster capacity and reduces user GPU hour cost by maximum 37.58% while preserving algorithmic flexibility and introducing minimal per-job overhead.

MoNE: Replacing Redundant Experts with Lightweight Novices for Structured Pruning of MoEGeng Zhang, Yuxuan Han, Yuxuan Lou et al.
Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) enables efficient scaling of large language models by activating only a subset of experts per input token. However, deploying MoE-based models incurs significant memory overhead due to the need to retain all experts in memory. While structured pruning is promising to reduce memory costs, existing methods often show suboptimal performance and unstable degradation in three dimensions: model architectures, calibration data sources, and calibration sample sizes. This paper proposes Mixture-of-Novices-and-Experts (MoNE), a novel expert pruning method that replaces redundant experts with lightweight novices to achieve effective and robust model compression. MoNE evaluates expert redundancy based on two metrics: access frequency and output variance. Experts exhibiting low usage and stable outputs are pruned and replaced with lightweight novices-unbiased estimations of their original outputs-minimizing performance degradation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that MoNE consistently outperforms baseline methods with minimal accuracy degradation across the three dimensions, confirming its effectiveness and robustness. Notably, it improves the average zero shot accuracy across nine downstream tasks by up to 2.71 under 25\% pruning ratio and 3.61 under 50\% pruning. Region-Adaptive Sampling for Diffusion TransformersZiming Liu, Yifan Yang, Chengruidong Zhang et al.
Diffusion models (DMs) have become the leading choice for generative tasks across diverse domains. However, their reliance on multiple sequential forward passes significantly limits real-time performance. Previous acceleration methods have primarily focused on reducing the number of sampling steps or reusing intermediate results, failing to leverage variations across spatial regions within the image due to the constraints of convolutional U-Net structures. By harnessing the flexibility of Diffusion Transformers (DiTs) in handling variable number of tokens, we introduce RAS, a novel, training-free sampling strategy that dynamically assigns different sampling ratios to regions within an image based on the focus of the DiT model. Our key observation is that during each sampling step, the model concentrates on semantically meaningful regions, and these areas of focus exhibit strong continuity across consecutive steps. Leveraging this insight, RAS updates only the regions currently in focus, while other regions are updated using cached noise from the previous step. The model's focus is determined based on the output from the preceding step, capitalizing on the temporal consistency we observed. We evaluate RAS on Stable Diffusion 3 and Lumina-Next-T2I, achieving speedups up to 2.36x and 2.51x, respectively, with minimal degradation in generation quality. Additionally, a user study reveals that RAS delivers comparable qualities under human evaluation while achieving a 1.6x speedup. Our approach makes a significant step towards more efficient diffusion transformers, enhancing their potential for real-time applications.
