Digital versus Analog Transmissions for Federated Learning over Wireless NetworksJiacheng Yao, Wei Xu, Zhaohui Yang et al.
In this paper, we quantitatively compare these two effective communication schemes, i.e., digital and analog ones, for wireless federated learning (FL) over resource-constrained networks, highlighting their essential differences as well as their respective application scenarios. We first examine both digital and analog transmission methods, together with a unified and fair comparison scheme under practical constraints. A universal convergence analysis under various imperfections is established for FL performance evaluation in wireless networks. These analytical results reveal that the fundamental difference between the two paradigms lies in whether communication and computation are jointly designed or not. The digital schemes decouple the communication design from specific FL tasks, making it difficult to support simultaneous uplink transmission of massive devices with limited bandwidth. In contrast, the analog communication allows over-the-air computation (AirComp), thus achieving efficient spectrum utilization. However, computation-oriented analog transmission reduces power efficiency, and its performance is sensitive to computational errors. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to verify these theoretical observations.

Semantic-aware Digital Twin for Metaverse: A Comprehensive ReviewSenthil Kumar Jagatheesaperumal, Zhaohui Yang, Qianqian Yang et al.
To facilitate the deployment of digital twins in Metaverse, the paradigm with semantic awareness has been proposed as a means for enabling accurate and task-oriented information extraction with inherent intelligence. However, this framework requires all devices in the Metaverse environment to be directly linked with the semantic model to enable faithful interpretation of messages. In contrast, this article introduces the digital twin framework, considering a smart industrial application, which enables semantic communication in conjugation with the Metaverse enabling technologies. The fundamentals of this framework are demonstrated on an industrial shopfloor management use case with a digital twin so as to improve its performance through semantic communication. An overview of semantic communication, Metaverse, and digital twins is presented. Integration of these technologies with the basic architecture as well as the impact on future industrial applications is presented. In a nutshell, this article showcases how semantic awareness can be an effective candidate in the implementation of digital twins for Metaverse applications.
Pre-training for Ad-hoc Retrieval: Hyperlink is Also You NeedZhengyi Ma, Zhicheng Dou, Wei Xu et al.
Designing pre-training objectives that more closely resemble the downstream tasks for pre-trained language models can lead to better performance at the fine-tuning stage, especially in the ad-hoc retrieval area. Existing pre-training approaches tailored for IR tried to incorporate weak supervised signals, such as query-likelihood based sampling, to construct pseudo query-document pairs from the raw textual corpus. However, these signals rely heavily on the sampling method. For example, the query likelihood model may lead to much noise in the constructed pre-training data. \blfootnote{$\dagger$ This work was done during an internship at Huawei.} In this paper, we propose to leverage the large-scale hyperlinks and anchor texts to pre-train the language model for ad-hoc retrieval. Since the anchor texts are created by webmasters and can usually summarize the target document, it can help to build more accurate and reliable pre-training samples than a specific algorithm. Considering different views of the downstream ad-hoc retrieval, we devise four pre-training tasks based on the hyperlinks. We then pre-train the Transformer model to predict the pair-wise preference, jointly with the Masked Language Model objective. Experimental results on two large-scale ad-hoc retrieval datasets show the significant improvement of our model compared with the existing methods.
