GeoSAM: Fine-tuning SAM with Multi-Modal Prompts for Mobility Infrastructure SegmentationRafi Ibn Sultan, Chengyin Li, Hui Zhu et al.
In geographical image segmentation, performance is often constrained by the limited availability of training data and a lack of generalizability, particularly for segmenting mobility infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks, and crosswalks. Vision foundation models like the Segment Anything Model (SAM), pre-trained on millions of natural images, have demonstrated impressive zero-shot segmentation performance, providing a potential solution. However, SAM struggles with geographical images, such as aerial and satellite imagery, due to its training being confined to natural images and the narrow features and textures of these objects blending into their surroundings. To address these challenges, we propose Geographical SAM (GeoSAM), a SAM-based framework that fine-tunes SAM using automatically generated multi-modal prompts. Specifically, GeoSAM integrates point prompts from a pre-trained task-specific model as primary visual guidance, and text prompts generated by a large language model as secondary semantic guidance, enabling the model to better capture both spatial structure and contextual meaning. GeoSAM outperforms existing approaches for mobility infrastructure segmentation in both familiar and completely unseen regions by at least 5\% in mIoU, representing a significant leap in leveraging foundation models to segment mobility infrastructure, including both road and pedestrian infrastructure in geographical images. FAS-UNet: A Novel FAS-driven Unet to Learn Variational Image SegmentationHui Zhu, Shi Shu, Jianping Zhang
Solving variational image segmentation problems with hidden physics is often expensive and requires different algorithms and manually tunes model parameter. The deep learning methods based on the U-Net structure have obtained outstanding performances in many different medical image segmentation tasks, but designing such networks requires a lot of parameters and training data, not always available for practical problems. In this paper, inspired by traditional multi-phase convexity Mumford-Shah variational model and full approximation scheme (FAS) solving the nonlinear systems, we propose a novel variational-model-informed network (denoted as FAS-Unet) that exploits the model and algorithm priors to extract the multi-scale features. The proposed model-informed network integrates image data and mathematical models, and implements them through learning a few convolution kernels. Based on the variational theory and FAS algorithm, we first design a feature extraction sub-network (FAS-Solution module) to solve the model-driven nonlinear systems, where a skip-connection is employed to fuse the multi-scale features. Secondly, we further design a convolution block to fuse the extracted features from the previous stage, resulting in the final segmentation possibility. Experimental results on three different medical image segmentation tasks show that the proposed FAS-Unet is very competitive with other state-of-the-art methods in qualitative, quantitative and model complexity evaluations. Moreover, it may also be possible to train specialized network architectures that automatically satisfy some of the mathematical and physical laws in other image problems for better accuracy, faster training and improved generalization.The code is available at \url{https://github.com/zhuhui100/FASUNet}.

LingLanMiDian: Systematic Evaluation of LLMs on TCM Knowledge and Clinical ReasoningRui Hua, Yu Wei, Zixin Shu et al.
Large language models (LLMs) are advancing rapidly in medical NLP, yet Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with its distinctive ontology, terminology, and reasoning patterns requires domain-faithful evaluation. Existing TCM benchmarks are fragmented in coverage and scale and rely on non-unified or generation-heavy scoring that hinders fair comparison. We present the LingLanMiDian (LingLan) benchmark, a large-scale, expert-curated, multi-task suite that unifies evaluation across knowledge recall, multi-hop reasoning, information extraction, and real-world clinical decision-making. LingLan introduces a consistent metric design, a synonym-tolerant protocol for clinical labels, a per-dataset 400-item Hard subset, and a reframing of diagnosis and treatment recommendation into single-choice decision recognition. We conduct comprehensive, zero-shot evaluations on 14 leading open-source and proprietary LLMs, providing a unified perspective on their strengths and limitations in TCM commonsense knowledge understanding, reasoning, and clinical decision support; critically, the evaluation on Hard subset reveals a substantial gap between current models and human experts in TCM-specialized reasoning. By bridging fundamental knowledge and applied reasoning through standardized evaluation, LingLan establishes a unified, quantitative, and extensible foundation for advancing TCM LLMs and domain-specific medical AI research. Cross-Skeleton Interaction Graph Aggregation Network for Representation Learning of Mouse Social BehaviourFeixiang Zhou, Xinyu Yang, Fang Chen et al.
Automated social behaviour analysis of mice has become an increasingly popular research area in behavioural neuroscience. Recently, pose information (i.e., locations of keypoints or skeleton) has been used to interpret social behaviours of mice. Nevertheless, effective encoding and decoding of social interaction information underlying the keypoints of mice has been rarely investigated in the existing methods. In particular, it is challenging to model complex social interactions between mice due to highly deformable body shapes and ambiguous movement patterns. To deal with the interaction modelling problem, we here propose a Cross-Skeleton Interaction Graph Aggregation Network (CS-IGANet) to learn abundant dynamics of freely interacting mice, where a Cross-Skeleton Node-level Interaction module (CS-NLI) is used to model multi-level interactions (i.e., intra-, inter- and cross-skeleton interactions). Furthermore, we design a novel Interaction-Aware Transformer (IAT) to dynamically learn the graph-level representation of social behaviours and update the node-level representation, guided by our proposed interaction-aware self-attention mechanism. Finally, to enhance the representation ability of our model, an auxiliary self-supervised learning task is proposed for measuring the similarity between cross-skeleton nodes. Experimental results on the standard CRMI13-Skeleton and our PDMB-Skeleton datasets show that our proposed model outperforms several other state-of-the-art approaches.

ISPO: An Integrated Ontology of Symptom Phenotypes for Semantic Integration of Traditional Chinese Medical DataZixin Shu, Rui Hua, Dengying Yan et al.
Symptom phenotypes are one of the key types of manifestations for diagnosis and treatment of various disease conditions. However, the diversity of symptom terminologies is one of the major obstacles hindering the analysis and knowledge sharing of various types of symptom-related medical data particularly in the fields of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Objective: This study aimed to construct an Integrated Ontology of symptom phenotypes (ISPO) to support the data mining of Chinese EMRs and real-world study in TCM field. Methods: To construct an integrated ontology of symptom phenotypes (ISPO), we manually annotated classical TCM textbooks and large-scale Chinese electronic medical records (EMRs) to collect symptom terms with support from a medical text annotation system. Furthermore, to facilitate the semantic interoperability between different terminologies, we incorporated public available biomedical vocabularies by manual mapping between Chinese terms and English terms with cross-references to source vocabularies. In addition, we evaluated the ISPO using independent clinical EMRs to provide a high-usable medical ontology for clinical data analysis. Results: By integrating 78,696 inpatient cases of EMRs, 5 biomedical vocabularies, 21 TCM books and dictionaries, ISPO provides 3,147 concepts, 23,475 terms, and 55,552 definition or contextual texts. Adhering to the taxonomical structure of the related anatomical systems of symptom phenotypes, ISPO provides 12 top-level categories and 79 middle-level sub-categories. The validation of data analysis showed the ISPO has a coverage rate of 95.35%, 98.53% and 92.66% for symptom terms with occurrence rates of 0.5% in additional three independent curated clinical datasets, which can demonstrate the significant value of ISPO in mapping clinical terms to ontologies.

MulModSeg: Enhancing Unpaired Multi-Modal Medical Image Segmentation with Modality-Conditioned Text Embedding and Alternating TrainingChengyin Li, Hui Zhu, Rafi Ibn Sultan et al.
In the diverse field of medical imaging, automatic segmentation has numerous applications and must handle a wide variety of input domains, such as different types of Computed Tomography (CT) scans and Magnetic Resonance (MR) images. This heterogeneity challenges automatic segmentation algorithms to maintain consistent performance across different modalities due to the requirement for spatially aligned and paired images. Typically, segmentation models are trained using a single modality, which limits their ability to generalize to other types of input data without employing transfer learning techniques. Additionally, leveraging complementary information from different modalities to enhance segmentation precision often necessitates substantial modifications to popular encoder-decoder designs, such as introducing multiple branched encoding or decoding paths for each modality. In this work, we propose a simple Multi-Modal Segmentation (MulModSeg) strategy to enhance medical image segmentation across multiple modalities, specifically CT and MR. It incorporates two key designs: a modality-conditioned text embedding framework via a frozen text encoder that adds modality awareness to existing segmentation frameworks without significant structural modifications or computational overhead, and an alternating training procedure that facilitates the integration of essential features from unpaired CT and MR inputs. Through extensive experiments with both Fully Convolutional Network and Transformer-based backbones, MulModSeg consistently outperforms previous methods in segmenting abdominal multi-organ and cardiac substructures for both CT and MR modalities. Automatic Calibration for Membership Inference Attack on Large Language ModelsSaleh Zare Zade, Yao Qiang, Xiangyu Zhou et al.
Membership Inference Attacks (MIAs) have recently been employed to determine whether a specific text was part of the pre-training data of Large Language Models (LLMs). However, existing methods often misinfer non-members as members, leading to a high false positive rate, or depend on additional reference models for probability calibration, which limits their practicality. To overcome these challenges, we introduce a novel framework called Automatic Calibration Membership Inference Attack (ACMIA), which utilizes a tunable temperature to calibrate output probabilities effectively. This approach is inspired by our theoretical insights into maximum likelihood estimation during the pre-training of LLMs. We introduce ACMIA in three configurations designed to accommodate different levels of model access and increase the probability gap between members and non-members, improving the reliability and robustness of membership inference. Extensive experiments on various open-source LLMs demonstrate that our proposed attack is highly effective, robust, and generalizable, surpassing state-of-the-art baselines across three widely used benchmarks. WalkGPT: Grounded Vision-Language Conversation with Depth-Aware Segmentation for Pedestrian NavigationRafi Ibn Sultan, Hui Zhu, Xiangyu Zhou et al.
Ensuring accessible pedestrian navigation requires reasoning about both semantic and spatial aspects of complex urban scenes, a challenge that existing Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) struggle to meet. Although these models can describe visual content, their lack of explicit grounding leads to object hallucinations and unreliable depth reasoning, limiting their usefulness for accessibility guidance. We introduce WalkGPT, a pixel-grounded LVLM for the new task of Grounded Navigation Guide, unifying language reasoning and segmentation within a single architecture for depth-aware accessibility guidance. Given a pedestrian-view image and a navigation query, WalkGPT generates a conversational response with segmentation masks that delineate accessible and harmful features, along with relative depth estimation. The model incorporates a Multi-Scale Query Projector (MSQP) that shapes the final image tokens by aggregating them along text tokens across spatial hierarchies, and a Calibrated Text Projector (CTP), guided by a proposed Region Alignment Loss, that maps language embeddings into segmentation-aware representations. These components enable fine-grained grounding and depth inference without user-provided cues or anchor points, allowing the model to generate complete and realistic navigation guidance. We also introduce PAVE, a large-scale benchmark of 41k pedestrian-view images paired with accessibility-aware questions and depth-grounded answers. Experiments show that WalkGPT achieves strong grounded reasoning and segmentation performance. BiPVL-Seg: Bidirectional Progressive Vision-Language Fusion with Global-Local Alignment for Medical Image SegmentationRafi Ibn Sultan, Hui Zhu, Chengyin Li et al.
Medical image segmentation typically relies solely on visual data, overlooking the rich textual information clinicians use for diagnosis. Vision-language models attempt to bridge this gap, but existing approaches often process visual and textual features independently, resulting in weak cross-modal alignment. Simple fusion techniques fail due to the inherent differences between spatial visual features and sequential text embeddings. Additionally, medical terminology deviates from general language, limiting the effectiveness of off-the-shelf text encoders and further hindering vision-language alignment. We propose BiPVL-Seg, an end-to-end framework that integrates vision-language fusion and embedding alignment through architectural and training innovations, where both components reinforce each other to enhance medical image segmentation. BiPVL-Seg introduces bidirectional progressive fusion in the architecture, which facilitates stage-wise information exchange between vision and text encoders. Additionally, it incorporates global-local contrastive alignment, a training objective that enhances the text encoder's comprehension by aligning text and vision embeddings at both class and concept levels. Extensive experiments on diverse medical imaging benchmarks across CT and MR modalities demonstrate BiPVL-Seg's superior performance when compared with state-of-the-art methods in complex multi-class segmentation. Mitigating Query-Flooding Parameter Duplication Attack on Regression Models with High-Dimensional Gaussian MechanismXiaoguang Li, Hui Li, Haonan Yan et al.
Public intelligent services enabled by machine learning algorithms are vulnerable to model extraction attacks that can steal confidential information of the learning models through public queries. Differential privacy (DP) has been considered a promising technique to mitigate this attack. However, we find that the vulnerability persists when regression models are being protected by current DP solutions. We show that the adversary can launch a query-flooding parameter duplication (QPD) attack to infer the model information by repeated queries. To defend against the QPD attack on logistic and linear regression models, we propose a novel High-Dimensional Gaussian (HDG) mechanism to prevent unauthorized information disclosure without interrupting the intended services. In contrast to prior work, the proposed HDG mechanism will dynamically generate the privacy budget and random noise for different queries and their results to enhance the obfuscation. Besides, for the first time, HDG enables an optimal privacy budget allocation that automatically determines the minimum amount of noise to be added per user-desired privacy level on each dimension. We comprehensively evaluate the performance of HDG using real-world datasets and shows that HDG effectively mitigates the QPD attack while satisfying the privacy requirements. We also prepare to open-source the relevant codes to the community for further research.

Progressive Multi-Level Alignments for Semi-Supervised Domain Adaptation SAR Target Recognition Using Simulated DataXinzheng Zhang, Hui Zhu, Hongqian Zhuang
Recently, an intriguing research trend for automatic target recognition (ATR) from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery has arisen: using simulated data to train ATR models is a feasible solution to the issue of inadequate measured data. To close the domain gap that exists between the real and simulated data, the unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) techniques are frequently exploited to construct ATR models. However, for UDA, the target domain lacks labeled data to direct the model training, posing a great challenge to ATR performance. To address the above problem, a semi-supervised domain adaptation (SSDA) framework has been proposed adopting progressive multi-level alignments for simulated data-aided SAR ATR. First, a progressive wavelet transform data augmentation (PWTDA) is presented by analyzing the discrepancies of wavelet decomposition sub-bands of two domain images, obtaining the domain-level alignment. Specifically, the domain gap is narrowed by mixing the wavelet transform high-frequency sub-band components. Second, we develop an asymptotic instance-prototype alignment (AIPA) strategy to push the source domain instances close to the corresponding target prototypes, aiming to achieve category-level alignment. Moreover, the consistency alignment is implemented by excavating the strong-weak augmentation consistency of both individual samples and the multi-sample relationship, enhancing the generalization capability of the model. Extensive experiments on the Synthetic and Measured Paired Labeled Experiment (SAMPLE) dataset, indicate that our approach obtains recognition accuracies of 99.63% and 98.91% in two common experimental settings with only one labeled sample per class of the target domain, outperforming the most advanced SSDA techniques.

LR-SGS: Robust LiDAR-Reflectance-Guided Salient Gaussian Splatting for Self-Driving Scene ReconstructionZiyu Chen, Fan Zhu, Hui Zhu et al.
Recent 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) methods have demonstrated the feasibility of self-driving scene reconstruction and novel view synthesis. However, most existing methods either rely solely on cameras or use LiDAR only for Gaussian initialization or depth supervision, while the rich scene information contained in point clouds, such as reflectance, and the complementarity between LiDAR and RGB have not been fully exploited, leading to degradation in challenging self-driving scenes, such as those with high ego-motion and complex lighting. To address these issues, we propose a robust and efficient LiDAR-reflectance-guided Salient Gaussian Splatting method (LR-SGS) for self-driving scenes, which introduces a structure-aware Salient Gaussian representation, initialized from geometric and reflectance feature points extracted from LiDAR and refined through a salient transform and improved density control to capture edge and planar structures. Furthermore, we calibrate LiDAR intensity into reflectance and attach it to each Gaussian as a lighting-invariant material channel, jointly aligned with RGB to enforce boundary consistency. Extensive experiments on the Waymo Open Dataset demonstrate that LR-SGS achieves superior reconstruction performance with fewer Gaussians and shorter training time. In particular, on Complex Lighting scenes, our method surpasses OmniRe by 1.18 dB PSNR.

High-Frequency Semantics and Geometric Priors for End-to-End Detection Transformers in Challenging UAV ImageryHongxing Peng, Lide Chen, Hui Zhu et al.
Object detection in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imagery is fundamentally challenged by a prevalence of small, densely packed, and occluded objects within cluttered backgrounds. Conventional detectors struggle with this domain, as they rely on hand-crafted components like pre-defined anchors and heuristic-based Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS), creating a well-known performance bottleneck in dense scenes. Even recent end-to-end frameworks have not been purpose-built to overcome these specific aerial challenges, resulting in a persistent performance gap. To bridge this gap, we introduce HEDS-DETR, a holistically enhanced real-time Detection Transformer tailored for aerial scenes. Our framework features three key innovations. First, we propose a novel High-Frequency Enhanced Semantics Network (HFESNet) backbone, which yields highly discriminative features by preserving critical high-frequency details alongside robust semantic context. Second, our Efficient Small Object Pyramid (ESOP) counteracts information loss by efficiently fusing high-resolution features, significantly boosting small object detection. Finally, we enhance decoder stability and localization precision with two synergistic components: Selective Query Recollection (SQR) and Geometry-Aware Positional Encoding (GAPE), which stabilize optimization and provide explicit spatial priors for dense object arrangements. On the VisDrone dataset, HEDS-DETR achieves a +3.8% AP and +5.1% AP50 gain over its baseline while reducing parameters by 4M and maintaining real-time speeds. This demonstrates a highly competitive accuracy-efficiency balance, especially for detecting dense and small objects in aerial scenes.

Switchable deep beamformer for high-quality and real-time passive acoustic mappingYi Zeng, Jinwei Li, Hui Zhu et al.
Passive acoustic mapping (PAM) is a promising tool for monitoring acoustic cavitation activities in the applications of ultrasound therapy. Data-adaptive beamformers for PAM have better image quality compared to the time exposure acoustics (TEA) algorithms. However, the computational cost of data-adaptive beamformers is considerably expensive. In this work, we develop a deep beamformer based on a generative adversarial network, which can switch between different transducer arrays and reconstruct high-quality PAM images directly from radio frequency ultrasound signals with low computational cost. The deep beamformer was trained on the dataset consisting of simulated and experimental cavitation signals of single and multiple microbubble clouds measured by different (linear and phased) arrays covering 1-15 MHz. We compared the performance of the deep beamformer to TEA and three different data-adaptive beamformers using the simulated and experimental test dataset. Compared with TEA, the deep beamformer reduced the energy spread area by 18.9%-65.0% and improved the image signal-to-noise ratio by 9.3-22.9 dB in average for the different arrays in our data. Compared to the data-adaptive beamformers, the deep beamformer reduced the computational cost by three orders of magnitude achieving 10.5 ms image reconstruction speed in our data, while the image quality was as good as that of the data-adaptive beamformers. These results demonstrated the potential of the deep beamformer for high-resolution monitoring of microbubble cavitation activities for ultrasound therapy.

Laser Data Based Automatic Generation of Lane-Level Road Map for Intelligent VehiclesZehai Yu, Hui Zhu, Linglong Lin et al.
With the development of intelligent vehicle systems, a high-precision road map is increasingly needed in many aspects. The automatic lane lines extraction and modeling are the most essential steps for the generation of a precise lane-level road map. In this paper, an automatic lane-level road map generation system is proposed. To extract the road markings on the ground, the multi-region Otsu thresholding method is applied, which calculates the intensity value of laser data that maximizes the variance between background and road markings. The extracted road marking points are then projected to the raster image and clustered using a two-stage clustering algorithm. Lane lines are subsequently recognized from these clusters by the shape features of their minimum bounding rectangle. To ensure the storage efficiency of the map, the lane lines are approximated to cubic polynomial curves using a Bayesian estimation approach. The proposed lane-level road map generation system has been tested on urban and expressway conditions in Hefei, China. The experimental results on the datasets show that our method can achieve excellent extraction and clustering effect, and the fitted lines can reach a high position accuracy with an error of less than 10 cm

TargetDrop: A Targeted Regularization Method for Convolutional Neural NetworksHui Zhu, Xiaofang Zhao
Dropout regularization has been widely used in deep learning but performs less effective for convolutional neural networks since the spatially correlated features allow dropped information to still flow through the networks. Some structured forms of dropout have been proposed to address this but prone to result in over or under regularization as features are dropped randomly. In this paper, we propose a targeted regularization method named TargetDrop which incorporates the attention mechanism to drop the discriminative feature units. Specifically, it masks out the target regions of the feature maps corresponding to the target channels. Experimental results compared with the other methods or applied for different networks demonstrate the regularization effect of our method.

Lic-Sec: an enhanced AppArmor Docker security profile generatorHui Zhu, Christian Gehrmann
Along with the rapid development of cloud computing technology, containerization technology has drawn much attention from both industry and academia. In this paper, we perform a comparative measurement analysis of Docker-sec, which is a Linux Security Module proposed in 2018, and a new AppArmor profile generator called Lic-Sec, which combines Docker-sec with a modified version of LiCShield, which is also a Linux Security Module proposed in 2015. Docker-sec and LiCShield can be used to enhance Docker container security based on mandatory access control and allows protection of the container without manually configurations. Lic-Sec brings together their strengths and provides stronger protection. We evaluate the effectiveness and performance of Docker-sec and Lic-Sec by testing them with real-world attacks. We generate an exploit database with 42 exploits effective on Docker containers selected from the latest 400 exploits on Exploit-db. We launch these exploits on containers spawned with Docker-sec and Lic-Sec separately. Our evaluations show that for demanding images, Lic-Sec gives protection for all privilege escalation attacks for which Docker-sec failed to give protection.

Localizing Interpretable Multi-scale informative Patches Derived from Media Classification TaskChuanguang Yang, Zhulin An, Xiaolong Hu et al.
Deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) always depend on wider receptive field (RF) and more complex non-linearity to achieve state-of-the-art performance, while suffering the increased difficult to interpret how relevant patches contribute the final prediction. In this paper, we construct an interpretable AnchorNet equipped with our carefully designed RFs and linearly spatial aggregation to provide patch-wise interpretability of the input media meanwhile localizing multi-scale informative patches only supervised on media-level labels without any extra bounding box annotations. Visualization of localized informative image and text patches show the superior multi-scale localization capability of AnchorNet. We further use localized patches for downstream classification tasks across widely applied networks. Experimental results demonstrate that replacing the original inputs with their patches for classification can get a clear inference acceleration with only tiny performance degradation, which proves that localized patches can indeed retain the most semantics and evidences of the original inputs.

Towards More Efficient and Effective Inference: The Joint Decision of Multi-ParticipantsHui Zhu, Zhulin An, Kaiqiang Xu et al.
Existing approaches to improve the performances of convolutional neural networks by optimizing the local architectures or deepening the networks tend to increase the size of models significantly. In order to deploy and apply the neural networks to edge devices which are in great demand, reducing the scale of networks are quite crucial. However, It is easy to degrade the performance of image processing by compressing the networks. In this paper, we propose a method which is suitable for edge devices while improving the efficiency and effectiveness of inference. The joint decision of multi-participants, mainly contain multi-layers and multi-networks, can achieve higher classification accuracy (0.26% on CIFAR-10 and 4.49% on CIFAR-100 at most) with similar total number of parameters for classical convolutional neural networks.

DRNet: Dissect and Reconstruct the Convolutional Neural Network via Interpretable MannersXiaolong Hu, Zhulin An, Chuanguang Yang et al.
Convolutional neural networks (ConvNets) are widely used in real life. People usually use ConvNets which pre-trained on a fixed number of classes. However, for different application scenarios, we usually do not need all of the classes, which means ConvNets are redundant when dealing with these tasks. This paper focuses on the redundancy of ConvNet channels. We proposed a novel idea: using an interpretable manner to find the most important channels for every single class (dissect), and dynamically run channels according to classes in need (reconstruct). For VGG16 pre-trained on CIFAR-10, we only run 11\% parameters for two-classes sub-tasks on average with negligible accuracy loss. For VGG16 pre-trained on ImageNet, our method averagely gains 14.29\% accuracy promotion for two-classes sub-tasks. In addition, analysis show that our method captures some semantic meanings of channels, and uses the context information more targeted for sub-tasks of ConvNets.

Rethinking the Number of Channels for the Convolutional Neural NetworkHui Zhu, Zhulin An, Chuanguang Yang et al.
Latest algorithms for automatic neural architecture search perform remarkable but few of them can effectively design the number of channels for convolutional neural networks and consume less computational efforts. In this paper, we propose a method for efficient automatic architecture search which is special to the widths of networks instead of the connections of neural architecture. Our method, functionally incremental search based on function-preserving, will explore the number of channels rapidly while controlling the number of parameters of the target network. On CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100 classification, our method using minimal computational resources (0.4~1.3 GPU-days) can discover more efficient rules of the widths of networks to improve the accuracy by about 0.5% on CIFAR-10 and a~2.33% on CIFAR-100 with fewer number of parameters. In particular, our method is suitable for exploring the number of channels of almost any convolutional neural network rapidly.

Gated Convolutional Networks with Hybrid Connectivity for Image ClassificationChuanguang Yang, Zhulin An, Hui Zhu et al.
We propose a simple yet effective method to reduce the redundancy of DenseNet by substantially decreasing the number of stacked modules by replacing the original bottleneck by our SMG module, which is augmented by local residual. Furthermore, SMG module is equipped with an efficient two-stage pipeline, which aims to DenseNet-like architectures that need to integrate all previous outputs, i.e., squeezing the incoming informative but redundant features gradually by hierarchical convolutions as a hourglass shape and then exciting it by multi-kernel depthwise convolutions, the output of which would be compact and hold more informative multi-scale features. We further develop a forget and an update gate by introducing the popular attention modules to implement the effective fusion instead of a simple addition between reused and new features. Due to the Hybrid Connectivity (nested combination of global dense and local residual) and Gated mechanisms, we called our network as the HCGNet. Experimental results on CIFAR and ImageNet datasets show that HCGNet is more prominently efficient than DenseNet, and can also significantly outperform state-of-the-art networks with less complexity. Moreover, HCGNet also shows the remarkable interpretability and robustness by network dissection and adversarial defense, respectively. On MS-COCO, HCGNet can consistently learn better features than popular backbones.

EENA: Efficient Evolution of Neural ArchitectureHui Zhu, Zhulin An, Chuanguang Yang et al.
Latest algorithms for automatic neural architecture search perform remarkable but are basically directionless in search space and computational expensive in training of every intermediate architecture. In this paper, we propose a method for efficient architecture search called EENA (Efficient Evolution of Neural Architecture). Due to the elaborately designed mutation and crossover operations, the evolution process can be guided by the information have already been learned. Therefore, less computational effort will be required while the searching and training time can be reduced significantly. On CIFAR-10 classification, EENA using minimal computational resources (0.65 GPU-days) can design highly effective neural architecture which achieves 2.56% test error with 8.47M parameters. Furthermore, the best architecture discovered is also transferable for CIFAR-100.
