Any3D-VLA: Enhancing VLA Robustness via Diverse Point CloudsXianzhe Fan, Shengliang Deng, Xiaoyang Wu et al.
Existing Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models typically take 2D images as visual input, which limits their spatial understanding in complex scenes. How can we incorporate 3D information to enhance VLA capabilities? We conduct a pilot study across different observation spaces and visual representations. The results show that explicitly lifting visual input into point clouds yields representations that better complement their corresponding 2D representations. To address the challenges of (1) scarce 3D data and (2) the domain gap induced by cross-environment differences and depth-scale biases, we propose Any3D-VLA. It unifies the simulator, sensor, and model-estimated point clouds within a training pipeline, constructs diverse inputs, and learns domain-agnostic 3D representations that are fused with the corresponding 2D representations. Simulation and real-world experiments demonstrate Any3D-VLA's advantages in improving performance and mitigating the domain gap. "It Might be Technically Impressive, But It's Practically Useless to us": Motivations, Practices, Challenges, and Opportunities for Cross-Functional Collaboration around AI within the News IndustryQing Xiao, Xianzhe Fan, Felix M. Simon et al.
Recently, an increasing number of news organizations have integrated artificial intelligence (AI) into their workflows, leading to a further influx of AI technologists and data workers into the news industry. This has initiated cross-functional collaborations between these professionals and journalists. Although prior research has explored the impact of AI-related roles entering the news industry, there is a lack of studies on how internal cross-functional collaboration around AI unfolds between AI professionals and journalists within the news industry. Through interviews with 17 journalists, six AI technologists, and three AI workers with cross-functional experience from leading Chinese news organizations, we investigate the practices, challenges, and opportunities for internal cross-functional collaboration around AI in news industry. We first study how these journalists and AI professionals perceive existing internal cross-collaboration strategies. We explore the challenges of cross-functional collaboration and provide recommendations for enhancing future cross-functional collaboration around AI in the news industry.

DreamAvoid: Critical-Phase Test-Time Dreaming to Avoid Failures in VLA PoliciesXianzhe Fan, Yuxiang Lu, Shenyuan Gao et al.
Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models are often brittle in fine-grained manipulation, where minor action errors during the critical phases can rapidly escalate into irrecoverable failures. Since existing VLA models rely predominantly on successful demonstrations for training, they lack an explicit awareness of failure during these critical phases. To address this, we propose DreamAvoid, a critical-phase test-time dreaming framework that enables VLA models to anticipate and avoid failures. We also introduce an autonomous boundary learning paradigm to refine the system's understanding of the subtle boundary between success and failure. Specifically, we (1) utilize a Dream Trigger to determine whether the execution has entered a critical phase, (2) sample multiple candidate action chunks from the VLA via an Action Proposer, and (3) employ a Dream Evaluator, jointly trained on mixed data (success, failure, and boundary cases), to "dream" the short-horizon futures corresponding to the candidate actions, evaluate their values, and select the optimal action. We conduct extensive evaluations on real-world manipulation tasks and simulation benchmarks. The results demonstrate that DreamAvoid can effectively avoid failures, thereby improving the overall task success rate. Our code is available at https://github.com/XianzheFan/DreamAvoid.

Utonia: Toward One Encoder for All Point CloudsYujia Zhang, Xiaoyang Wu, Yunhan Yang et al.
We dream of a future where point clouds from all domains can come together to shape a single model that benefits them all. Toward this goal, we present Utonia, a first step toward training a single self-supervised point transformer encoder across diverse domains, spanning remote sensing, outdoor LiDAR, indoor RGB-D sequences, object-centric CAD models, and point clouds lifted from RGB-only videos. Despite their distinct sensing geometries, densities, and priors, Utonia learns a consistent representation space that transfers across domains. This unification improves perception capability while revealing intriguing emergent behaviors that arise only when domains are trained jointly. Beyond perception, we observe that Utonia representations can also benefit embodied and multimodal reasoning: conditioning vision-language-action policies on Utonia features improves robotic manipulation, and integrating them into vision-language models yields gains on spatial reasoning. We hope Utonia can serve as a step toward foundation models for sparse 3D data, and support downstream applications in AR/VR, robotics, and autonomous driving.

FASTER: Rethinking Real-Time Flow VLAsYuxiang Lu, Zhe Liu, Xianzhe Fan et al.
Real-time execution is crucial for deploying Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models in the physical world. Existing asynchronous inference methods primarily optimize trajectory smoothness, but neglect the critical latency in reacting to environmental changes. By rethinking the notion of reaction in action chunking policies, this paper presents a systematic analysis of the factors governing reaction time. We show that reaction time follows a uniform distribution determined jointly by the Time to First Action (TTFA) and the execution horizon. Moreover, we reveal that the standard practice of applying a constant schedule in flow-based VLAs can be inefficient and forces the system to complete all sampling steps before any movement can start, forming the bottleneck in reaction latency. To overcome this issue, we propose Fast Action Sampling for ImmediaTE Reaction (FASTER). By introducing a Horizon-Aware Schedule, FASTER adaptively prioritizes near-term actions during flow sampling, compressing the denoising of the immediate reaction by tenfold (e.g., in $Ï_{0.5}$ and X-VLA) into a single step, while preserving the quality of long-horizon trajectory. Coupled with a streaming client-server pipeline, FASTER substantially reduces the effective reaction latency on real robots, especially when deployed on consumer-grade GPUs. Real-world experiments, including a highly dynamic table tennis task, prove that FASTER unlocks unprecedented real-time responsiveness for generalist policies, enabling rapid generation of accurate and smooth trajectories.

How Users Who are Blind or Low Vision Play Mobile Games: Perceptions, Challenges, and StrategiesZihe Ran, Xiyu Li, Qing Xiao et al.
As blind and low-vision (BLV) players engage more deeply with games, accessibility features have become essential. While some research has explored tools and strategies to enhance game accessibility, the specific experiences of these players with mobile games remain underexamined. This study addresses this gap by investigating how BLV users experience mobile games with varying accessibility levels. Through interviews with 32 experienced BLV mobile players, we explore their perceptions, challenges, and strategies for engaging with mobile games. Our findings reveal that BLV players turn to mobile games to alleviate boredom, achieve a sense of accomplishment, and build social connections, but face barriers depending on the game's accessibility level. We also compare mobile games to other forms of gaming, highlighting the relative advantages of mobile games, such as the inherent accessibility of smartphones. This study contributes to understanding BLV mobile gaming experiences and provides insights for enhancing accessible mobile game design.

SoMi-ToM: Evaluating Multi-Perspective Theory of Mind in Embodied Social InteractionsXianzhe Fan, Xuhui Zhou, Chuanyang Jin et al.
Humans continuously infer the states, goals, and behaviors of others by perceiving their surroundings in dynamic, real-world social interactions. However, most Theory of Mind (ToM) benchmarks only evaluate static, text-based scenarios, which have a significant gap compared to real interactions. We propose the SoMi-ToM benchmark, designed to evaluate multi-perspective ToM in embodied multi-agent complex social interactions. This benchmark is based on rich multimodal interaction data generated by the interaction environment SoMi, covering diverse crafting goals and social relationships. Our framework supports multi-level evaluation: (1) first-person evaluation provides multimodal (visual, dialogue, action, etc.) input from a first-person perspective during a task for real-time state inference, (2) third-person evaluation provides complete third-person perspective video and text records after a task for goal and behavior inference. This evaluation method allows for a more comprehensive examination of a model's ToM capabilities from both the subjective immediate experience and the objective global observation. We constructed a challenging dataset containing 35 third-person perspective videos, 363 first-person perspective images, and 1225 expert-annotated multiple-choice questions (three options). On this dataset, we systematically evaluated the performance of human subjects and several state-of-the-art large vision-language models (LVLMs). The results show that LVLMs perform significantly worse than humans on SoMi-ToM: the average accuracy gap between humans and models is 40.1% in first-person evaluation and 26.4% in third-person evaluation. This indicates that future LVLMs need to further improve their ToM capabilities in embodied, complex social interactions.

Minion: A Technology Probe for Resolving Value Conflicts through Expert-Driven and User-Driven Strategies in AI Companion ApplicationsXianzhe Fan, Qing Xiao, Xuhui Zhou et al. · allen-ai, cmu
AI companions based on large language models can role-play and converse very naturally. When value conflicts arise between the AI companion and the user, it may offend or upset the user. Yet, little research has examined such conflicts. We first conducted a formative study that analyzed 151 user complaints about conflicts with AI companions, providing design implications for our study. Based on these, we created Minion, a technology probe to help users resolve human-AI value conflicts. Minion applies a user-empowerment intervention method that provides suggestions by combining expert-driven and user-driven conflict resolution strategies. We conducted a technology probe study, creating 40 value conflict scenarios on Character.AI and Talkie. 22 participants completed 274 tasks and successfully resolved conflicts 94.16% of the time. We summarize user responses, preferences, and needs in resolving value conflicts, and propose design implications to reduce conflicts and empower users to resolve them more effectively.
