Tactile-based Multimodal Fusion in Embodied Intelligence: A Survey of Vision, Language, and Contact-Driven ParadigmsZhixiang Cao, Di Tian, Runwei Guan et al.
Tactile sensing is a fundamental modality for embodied intelligence, offering unique and direct feedback on contact geometry, material properties, and interaction dynamics that remote sensors cannot replace. However, unimodal tactile perception is inherently limited by its sparse spatial coverage and lack of global semantic context. With the recent explosion in deep learning and large language models, integrating tactile with vision and language has become essential to bridge physical interaction with semantic reasoning, leading to the emergence of Multimodal Tactile Fusion. Despite rapid progress, the existing researches remain fragmented across disparate datasets, sensing modalities, and tasks, lacking a unified theoretical framework. To address this gap, this paper provides a comprehensive survey of multimodal tactile fusion research up to the first quarter of 2026. We propose a hierarchical taxonomy that organizes the field into two primary dimensions: multimodal datasets and multimodal methods. On the data side, we categorize resources ranging from Tactile-Vision datasets, Tactile-Language datasets, Tactile-Vision-Language datasets, and Tactile-Vision-Other datasets. On the method side, we structure prior work into three core pillars: (1) Multimodal Perception and Recognition, which focuses on object understanding and grasp prediction; (2) Cross-Modal Generation, focusing on bidirectional translation between tactile, vision, and text; and (3) Multimodal Interaction, emphasizing feedback control and language-guided manipulation. Furthermore, we summarize representative tactile sensing hardware, review commonly used evaluation metrics and benchmark settings, and discuss current challenges and promising future directions.

Large-scale Autonomous Flight with Real-time Semantic SLAM under Dense Forest CanopyXu Liu, Guilherme V. Nardari, Fernando Cladera Ojeda et al.
Semantic maps represent the environment using a set of semantically meaningful objects. This representation is storage-efficient, less ambiguous, and more informative, thus facilitating large-scale autonomy and the acquisition of actionable information in highly unstructured, GPS-denied environments. In this letter, we propose an integrated system that can perform large-scale autonomous flights and real-time semantic mapping in challenging under-canopy environments. We detect and model tree trunks and ground planes from LiDAR data, which are associated across scans and used to constrain robot poses as well as tree trunk models. The autonomous navigation module utilizes a multi-level planning and mapping framework and computes dynamically feasible trajectories that lead the UAV to build a semantic map of the user-defined region of interest in a computationally and storage efficient manner. A drift-compensation mechanism is designed to minimize the odometry drift using semantic SLAM outputs in real time, while maintaining planner optimality and controller stability. This leads the UAV to execute its mission accurately and safely at scale.

Design and Deployment of an Autonomous Unmanned Ground Vehicle for Urban Firefighting ScenariosKshitij Jindal, Anthony Wang, Dinesh Thakur et al.
Autonomous mobile robots have the potential to solve missions that are either too complex or dangerous to be accomplished by humans. In this paper, we address the design and autonomous deployment of a ground vehicle equipped with a robotic arm for urban firefighting scenarios. We describe the hardware design and algorithm approaches for autonomous navigation, planning, fire source identification and abatement in unstructured urban scenarios. The approach employs on-board sensors for autonomous navigation and thermal camera information for source identification. A custom electro{mechanical pump is responsible to eject water for fire abatement. The proposed approach is validated through several experiments, where we show the ability to identify and abate a sample heat source in a building. The whole system was developed and deployed during the Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC) 2020, for Challenge No. 3 Fire Fighting Inside a High-Rise Building and during the Grand Challenge where our approach scored the highest number of points among all UGV solutions and was instrumental to win the first place.

Mobile Manipulator for Autonomous Localization, Grasping and Precise Placement of Construction Material in a Semi-structured EnvironmentPetr Stibinger, George Broughton, Filip Majer et al.
Mobile manipulators have the potential to revolutionize modern agriculture, logistics and manufacturing. In this work, we present the design of a ground-based mobile manipulator for automated structure assembly. The proposed system is capable of autonomous localization, grasping, transportation and deployment of construction material in a semi-structured environment. Special effort was put into making the system invariant to lighting changes, and not reliant on external positioning systems. Therefore, the presented system is self-contained and capable of operating in outdoor and indoor conditions alike. Finally, we present means to extend the perceptive radius of the vehicle by using it in cooperation with an autonomous drone, which provides aerial reconnaissance. Performance of the proposed system has been evaluated in a series of experiments conducted in real-world conditions.

Mine Tunnel Exploration using Multiple Quadrupedal RobotsIan D. Miller, Fernando Cladera, Anthony Cowley et al.
Robotic exploration of underground environments is a particularly challenging problem due to communication, endurance, and traversability constraints which necessitate high degrees of autonomy and agility. These challenges are further exacerbated by the need to minimize human intervention for practical applications. While legged robots have the ability to traverse extremely challenging terrain, they also engender new challenges for planning, estimation, and control. In this work, we describe a fully autonomous system for multi-robot mine exploration and mapping using legged quadrupeds, as well as a distributed database mesh networking system for reporting data. In addition, we show results from the DARPA Subterranean Challenge (SubT) Tunnel Circuit demonstrating localization of artifacts after traversals of hundreds of meters. These experiments describe fully autonomous exploration of an unknown Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-denied environment undertaken by legged robots.

PST900: RGB-Thermal Calibration, Dataset and Segmentation NetworkShreyas S. Shivakumar, Neil Rodrigues, Alex Zhou et al.
In this work we propose long wave infrared (LWIR) imagery as a viable supporting modality for semantic segmentation using learning-based techniques. We first address the problem of RGB-thermal camera calibration by proposing a passive calibration target and procedure that is both portable and easy to use. Second, we present PST900, a dataset of 894 synchronized and calibrated RGB and Thermal image pairs with per pixel human annotations across four distinct classes from the DARPA Subterranean Challenge. Lastly, we propose a CNN architecture for fast semantic segmentation that combines both RGB and Thermal imagery in a way that leverages RGB imagery independently. We compare our method against the state-of-the-art and show that our method outperforms them in our dataset.

MAVNet: an Effective Semantic Segmentation Micro-Network for MAV-based TasksTy Nguyen, Shreyas S. Shivakumar, Ian D. Miller et al.
Real-time semantic image segmentation on platforms subject to size, weight and power (SWaP) constraints is a key area of interest for air surveillance and inspection. In this work, we propose MAVNet: a small, light-weight, deep neural network for real-time semantic segmentation on micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). MAVNet, inspired by ERFNet, features 400 times fewer parameters and achieves comparable performance with some reference models in empirical experiments. Our model achieves a trade-off between speed and accuracy, achieving up to 48 FPS on an NVIDIA 1080Ti and 9 FPS on the NVIDIA Jetson Xavier when processing high resolution imagery. Additionally, we provide two novel datasets that represent challenges in semantic segmentation for real-time MAV tracking and infrastructure inspection tasks and verify MAVNet on these datasets. Our algorithm and datasets are made publicly available.
