Building Domain-Specific LLMs Faithful To The Islamic Worldview: Mirage or Technical Possibility?Shabaz Patel, Hassan Kane, Rayhan Patel
Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance across numerous natural language understanding use cases. However, this impressive performance comes with inherent limitations, such as the tendency to perpetuate stereotypical biases or fabricate non-existent facts. In the context of Islam and its representation, accurate and factual representation of its beliefs and teachings rooted in the Quran and Sunnah is key. This work focuses on the challenge of building domain-specific LLMs faithful to the Islamic worldview and proposes ways to build and evaluate such systems. Firstly, we define this open-ended goal as a technical problem and propose various solutions. Subsequently, we critically examine known challenges inherent to each approach and highlight evaluation methodologies that can be used to assess such systems. This work highlights the need for high-quality datasets, evaluations, and interdisciplinary work blending machine learning with Islamic scholarship.

NUBIA: NeUral Based Interchangeability Assessor for Text GenerationHassan Kane, Muhammed Yusuf Kocyigit, Ali Abdalla et al.
We present NUBIA, a methodology to build automatic evaluation metrics for text generation using only machine learning models as core components. A typical NUBIA model is composed of three modules: a neural feature extractor, an aggregator and a calibrator. We demonstrate an implementation of NUBIA which outperforms metrics currently used to evaluate machine translation, summaries and slightly exceeds/matches state of the art metrics on correlation with human judgement on the WMT segment-level Direct Assessment task, sentence-level ranking and image captioning evaluation. The model implemented is modular, explainable and set to continuously improve over time.
Building Disaster Damage Assessment in Satellite Imagery with Multi-Temporal FusionEthan Weber, Hassan Kané
Automatic change detection and disaster damage assessment are currently procedures requiring a huge amount of labor and manual work by satellite imagery analysts. In the occurrences of natural disasters, timely change detection can save lives. In this work, we report findings on problem framing, data processing and training procedures which are specifically helpful for the task of building damage assessment using the newly released xBD dataset. Our insights lead to substantial improvement over the xBD baseline models, and we score among top results on the xView2 challenge leaderboard. We release our code used for the competition.

AWE-CM Vectors: Augmenting Word Embeddings with a Clinical MetathesaurusWillie Boag, Hassan Kané
In recent years, word embeddings have been surprisingly effective at capturing intuitive characteristics of the words they represent. These vectors achieve the best results when training corpora are extremely large, sometimes billions of words. Clinical natural language processing datasets, however, tend to be much smaller. Even the largest publicly-available dataset of medical notes is three orders of magnitude smaller than the dataset of the oft-used "Google News" word vectors. In order to make up for limited training data sizes, we encode expert domain knowledge into our embeddings. Building on a previous extension of word2vec, we show that generalizing the notion of a word's "context" to include arbitrary features creates an avenue for encoding domain knowledge into word embeddings. We show that the word vectors produced by this method outperform their text-only counterparts across the board in correlation with clinical experts.
