Outlier Weighed Layerwise Sparsity (OWL): A Missing Secret Sauce for Pruning LLMs to High SparsityLu Yin, You Wu, Zhenyu Zhang et al.
Large Language Models (LLMs), renowned for their remarkable performance across diverse domains, present a challenge when it comes to practical deployment due to their colossal model size. In response to this challenge, efforts have been directed toward the application of traditional network pruning techniques to LLMs, uncovering a massive number of parameters that can be pruned in one-shot without hurting performance. Prevailing LLM pruning strategies have consistently adhered to the practice of uniformly pruning all layers at equivalent sparsity, resulting in robust performance. However, this observation stands in contrast to the prevailing trends observed in the field of vision models, where non-uniform layerwise sparsity typically yields stronger results. To understand the underlying reasons for this disparity, we conduct a comprehensive study and discover a strong correlation with the emergence of activation outliers in LLMs. Inspired by this finding, we introduce a novel LLM pruning methodology that incorporates a tailored set of non-uniform layerwise sparsity ratios, termed as Outlier Weighed Layerwise sparsity (OWL). The sparsity ratio of OWL is proportional to the outlier ratio observed within each layer, facilitating a more effective alignment between layerwise weight sparsity and outlier ratios. Our empirical evaluation, conducted across the LLaMA-V1 family and OPT, spanning various benchmarks, demonstrates the distinct advantages offered by OWL over previous methods. For instance, OWL exhibits a remarkable performance gain, surpassing the state-of-the-art Wanda and SparseGPT by 61.22 and 6.80 perplexity at a high sparsity level of 70%, respectively, while delivering 2.6x end-to-end inference speed-up in the DeepSparse inference engine. This paper reviews the NTIRE 2022 challenge on efficient single image super-resolution with focus on the proposed solutions and results. The task of the challenge was to super-resolve an input image with a magnification factor of $\times$4 based on pairs of low and corresponding high resolution images. The aim was to design a network for single image super-resolution that achieved improvement of efficiency measured according to several metrics including runtime, parameters, FLOPs, activations, and memory consumption while at least maintaining the PSNR of 29.00dB on DIV2K validation set. IMDN is set as the baseline for efficiency measurement. The challenge had 3 tracks including the main track (runtime), sub-track one (model complexity), and sub-track two (overall performance). In the main track, the practical runtime performance of the submissions was evaluated. The rank of the teams were determined directly by the absolute value of the average runtime on the validation set and test set. In sub-track one, the number of parameters and FLOPs were considered. And the individual rankings of the two metrics were summed up to determine a final ranking in this track. In sub-track two, all of the five metrics mentioned in the description of the challenge including runtime, parameter count, FLOPs, activations, and memory consumption were considered. Similar to sub-track one, the rankings of five metrics were summed up to determine a final ranking. The challenge had 303 registered participants, and 43 teams made valid submissions. They gauge the state-of-the-art in efficient single image super-resolution.

DeSRA: Detect and Delete the Artifacts of GAN-based Real-World Super-Resolution ModelsLiangbin Xie, Xintao Wang, Xiangyu Chen et al.
Image super-resolution (SR) with generative adversarial networks (GAN) has achieved great success in restoring realistic details. However, it is notorious that GAN-based SR models will inevitably produce unpleasant and undesirable artifacts, especially in practical scenarios. Previous works typically suppress artifacts with an extra loss penalty in the training phase. They only work for in-distribution artifact types generated during training. When applied in real-world scenarios, we observe that those improved methods still generate obviously annoying artifacts during inference. In this paper, we analyze the cause and characteristics of the GAN artifacts produced in unseen test data without ground-truths. We then develop a novel method, namely, DeSRA, to Detect and then Delete those SR Artifacts in practice. Specifically, we propose to measure a relative local variance distance from MSE-SR results and GAN-SR results, and locate the problematic areas based on the above distance and semantic-aware thresholds. After detecting the artifact regions, we develop a finetune procedure to improve GAN-based SR models with a few samples, so that they can deal with similar types of artifacts in more unseen real data. Equipped with our DeSRA, we can successfully eliminate artifacts from inference and improve the ability of SR models to be applied in real-world scenarios. OSRT: Omnidirectional Image Super-Resolution with Distortion-aware TransformerFanghua Yu, Xintao Wang, Mingdeng Cao et al.
Omnidirectional images (ODIs) have obtained lots of research interest for immersive experiences. Although ODIs require extremely high resolution to capture details of the entire scene, the resolutions of most ODIs are insufficient. Previous methods attempt to solve this issue by image super-resolution (SR) on equirectangular projection (ERP) images. However, they omit geometric properties of ERP in the degradation process, and their models can hardly generalize to real ERP images. In this paper, we propose Fisheye downsampling, which mimics the real-world imaging process and synthesizes more realistic low-resolution samples. Then we design a distortion-aware Transformer (OSRT) to modulate ERP distortions continuously and self-adaptively. Without a cumbersome process, OSRT outperforms previous methods by about 0.2dB on PSNR. Moreover, we propose a convenient data augmentation strategy, which synthesizes pseudo ERP images from plain images. This simple strategy can alleviate the over-fitting problem of large networks and significantly boost the performance of ODISR. The Efficacy of Pessimism in Asynchronous Q-LearningYuling Yan, Gen Li, Yuxin Chen et al. · princeton
This paper is concerned with the asynchronous form of Q-learning, which applies a stochastic approximation scheme to Markovian data samples. Motivated by the recent advances in offline reinforcement learning, we develop an algorithmic framework that incorporates the principle of pessimism into asynchronous Q-learning, which penalizes infrequently-visited state-action pairs based on suitable lower confidence bounds (LCBs). This framework leads to, among other things, improved sample efficiency and enhanced adaptivity in the presence of near-expert data. Our approach permits the observed data in some important scenarios to cover only partial state-action space, which is in stark contrast to prior theory that requires uniform coverage of all state-action pairs. When coupled with the idea of variance reduction, asynchronous Q-learning with LCB penalization achieves near-optimal sample complexity, provided that the target accuracy level is small enough. In comparison, prior works were suboptimal in terms of the dependency on the effective horizon even when i.i.d. sampling is permitted. Our results deliver the first theoretical support for the use of pessimism principle in the presence of Markovian non-i.i.d. data.

AnimeSR: Learning Real-World Super-Resolution Models for Animation VideosYanze Wu, Xintao Wang, Gen Li et al.
This paper studies the problem of real-world video super-resolution (VSR) for animation videos, and reveals three key improvements for practical animation VSR. First, recent real-world super-resolution approaches typically rely on degradation simulation using basic operators without any learning capability, such as blur, noise, and compression. In this work, we propose to learn such basic operators from real low-quality animation videos, and incorporate the learned ones into the degradation generation pipeline. Such neural-network-based basic operators could help to better capture the distribution of real degradations. Second, a large-scale high-quality animation video dataset, AVC, is built to facilitate comprehensive training and evaluations for animation VSR. Third, we further investigate an efficient multi-scale network structure. It takes advantage of the efficiency of unidirectional recurrent networks and the effectiveness of sliding-window-based methods. Thanks to the above delicate designs, our method, AnimeSR, is capable of restoring real-world low-quality animation videos effectively and efficiently, achieving superior performance to previous state-of-the-art methods. Model-Based Reinforcement Learning for Offline Zero-Sum Markov GamesYuling Yan, Gen Li, Yuxin Chen et al. · princeton
This paper makes progress towards learning Nash equilibria in two-player zero-sum Markov games from offline data. Specifically, consider a $γ$-discounted infinite-horizon Markov game with $S$ states, where the max-player has $A$ actions and the min-player has $B$ actions. We propose a pessimistic model-based algorithm with Bernstein-style lower confidence bounds -- called VI-LCB-Game -- that provably finds an $\varepsilon$-approximate Nash equilibrium with a sample complexity no larger than $\frac{C_{\mathsf{clipped}}^{\star}S(A+B)}{(1-γ)^{3}\varepsilon^{2}}$ (up to some log factor). Here, $C_{\mathsf{clipped}}^{\star}$ is some unilateral clipped concentrability coefficient that reflects the coverage and distribution shift of the available data (vis-à-vis the target data), and the target accuracy $\varepsilon$ can be any value within $\big(0,\frac{1}{1-γ}\big]$. Our sample complexity bound strengthens prior art by a factor of $\min\{A,B\}$, achieving minimax optimality for the entire $\varepsilon$-range. An appealing feature of our result lies in algorithmic simplicity, which reveals the unnecessity of variance reduction and sample splitting in achieving sample optimality.

Mags-RL: Wearing Multimodal LLMs a Magnifying Glass via Agentic Reinforcement Learning For Complex Scene ReasoningXuanzhao Dong, Wenhui Zhu, Peijie Qiu et al.
Despite their popularity and success, Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) often struggle to interpret images accurately, which limits their reasoning capability in complex scenarios (e.g., high object density and complex background clutter). Prior work mainly addresses this limitation by incorporating explicit visual cues like bounding boxes that require extra annotations. In addition, the resulting low-resolution crops often miss fine-grained details that MLLMs require for accurate reasoning. Therefore, we propose Mags-RL, an Agentic Reinforcement Learning (RL) framework that equips MLLMs with an external super-resolution "magnifying glass" agent for high-resolution fine-grained inspection. Specifically, the model performs two-round reasoning: in the first round, it generates an initial rationale and autonomously identifies regions of interest without relying on additional annotations; in the second round, it invokes a super-resolution agent to crop and upscale those regions, then revisits and verifies its earlier reasoning to produce the final answer. We also introduce a novel curriculum learning strategy that enables data-efficient RL training, needing as few as only 40 training samples to achieve reasonable performance. Experiments on VSR, TallyQA, and GQA subsets show its superior performance against recent strong competing methods, demonstrating high-quality reasoning with precise visual grounding. Seedance 2.0 is a new native multi-modal audio-video generation model, officially released in China in early February 2026. Compared with its predecessors, Seedance 1.0 and 1.5 Pro, Seedance 2.0 adopts a unified, highly efficient, and large-scale architecture for multi-modal audio-video joint generation. This allows it to support four input modalities: text, image, audio, and video, by integrating one of the most comprehensive suites of multi-modal content reference and editing capabilities available in the industry to date. It delivers substantial, well-rounded improvements across all key sub-dimensions of video and audio generation. In both expert evaluations and public user tests, the model has demonstrated performance on par with the leading levels in the field. Seedance 2.0 supports direct generation of audio-video content with durations ranging from 4 to 15 seconds, with native output resolutions of 480p and 720p. For multi-modal inputs as reference, its current open platform supports up to 3 video clips, 9 images, and 3 audio clips. In addition, we provide Seedance 2.0 Fast version, an accelerated variant of Seedance 2.0 designed to boost generation speed for low-latency scenarios. Seedance 2.0 has delivered significant improvements to its foundational generation capabilities and multi-modal generation performance, bringing an enhanced creative experience for end users.

Towards High-Quality and Efficient Video Super-Resolution via Spatial-Temporal Data OverfittingGen Li, Jie Ji, Minghai Qin et al.
As deep convolutional neural networks (DNNs) are widely used in various fields of computer vision, leveraging the overfitting ability of the DNN to achieve video resolution upscaling has become a new trend in the modern video delivery system. By dividing videos into chunks and overfitting each chunk with a super-resolution model, the server encodes videos before transmitting them to the clients, thus achieving better video quality and transmission efficiency. However, a large number of chunks are expected to ensure good overfitting quality, which substantially increases the storage and consumes more bandwidth resources for data transmission. On the other hand, decreasing the number of chunks through training optimization techniques usually requires high model capacity, which significantly slows down execution speed. To reconcile such, we propose a novel method for high-quality and efficient video resolution upscaling tasks, which leverages the spatial-temporal information to accurately divide video into chunks, thus keeping the number of chunks as well as the model size to minimum. Additionally, we advance our method into a single overfitting model by a data-aware joint training technique, which further reduces the storage requirement with negligible quality drop. We deploy our models on an off-the-shelf mobile phone, and experimental results show that our method achieves real-time video super-resolution with high video quality. Compared with the state-of-the-art, our method achieves 28 fps streaming speed with 41.6 PSNR, which is 14$\times$ faster and 2.29 dB better in the live video resolution upscaling tasks. Forget-It-All: Multi-Concept Machine Unlearning via Concept-Aware Neuron MaskingKaiyuan Deng, Bo Hui, Gen Li et al.
The widespread adoption of text-to-image (T2I) diffusion models has raised concerns about their potential to generate copyrighted, inappropriate, or sensitive imagery. As a practical solution, machine unlearning aims to erase unwanted concepts without retraining from scratch. While most existing methods are effective for single-concept unlearning, they often struggle when removing multiple concepts, causing significant challenges in unlearning effectiveness, generation quality, and sensitivity to hyperparameters and datasets. We take a unique perspective on multi-concept unlearning by leveraging model sparsity and propose the Forget It All (FIA) framework. FIA first introduces Contrastive Concept Saliency to quantify each weight connection's contribution to a target concept. It then identifies Concept Sensitive Neurons by combining temporal and spatial information, ensuring that only neurons consistently responsive to the target concept are selected. Finally, FIA constructs masks from the identified neurons and fuses them into a unified multi-concept mask, where Concept Agnostic Neurons that broadly support general content generation are preserved while concept-specific neurons are pruned to remove the targets. FIA is training-free and requires minimal hyperparameter tuning for new tasks, enabling plug-and-play use. Extensive experiments across three distinct unlearning tasks demonstrate that FIA achieves more reliable multi-concept unlearning, improving forgetting effectiveness while maintaining generation fidelity and quality. Reconstructing Action-Conditioned Human-Object Interactions Using Commonsense Knowledge PriorsXi Wang, Gen Li, Yen-Ling Kuo et al. · eth-zurich
We present a method for inferring diverse 3D models of human-object interactions from images. Reasoning about how humans interact with objects in complex scenes from a single 2D image is a challenging task given ambiguities arising from the loss of information through projection. In addition, modeling 3D interactions requires the generalization ability towards diverse object categories and interaction types. We propose an action-conditioned modeling of interactions that allows us to infer diverse 3D arrangements of humans and objects without supervision on contact regions or 3D scene geometry. Our method extracts high-level commonsense knowledge from large language models (such as GPT-3), and applies them to perform 3D reasoning of human-object interactions. Our key insight is priors extracted from large language models can help in reasoning about human-object contacts from textural prompts only. We quantitatively evaluate the inferred 3D models on a large human-object interaction dataset and show how our method leads to better 3D reconstructions. We further qualitatively evaluate the effectiveness of our method on real images and demonstrate its generalizability towards interaction types and object categories.

MIRAGE: Mobile Agents with Implicit Reasoning and Generative World ModelsZhichao Yang, Yuanze Hu, Haojie Hao et al.
Mobile agents are increasingly expected to operate everyday applications from screenshots and language goals, where reliable control requires reasoning over screen affordances, multi-step navigation, and future state changes. However, many agents externalize this computation as long textual chains of thought, which slows interaction, increases supervision cost, and complicates deployment. We introduce MIRAGE, a framework that learns continuous latent reasoning representations from visible textual reasoning traces. MIRAGE transfers explicit reasoning into compact hidden states, enabling the agent to reason internally without decoding long rationales. It also incorporates a generative world-model objective: latent reasoning vectors are aligned with future screenshots, encouraging the agent to anticipate upcoming interface states before acting. This turns hidden computation into both a compressed thought representation and a forward-looking model of environment dynamics. At inference time, MIRAGE reasons in continuous latent space, reducing token generation while improving execution efficiency. On AndroidWorld, MIRAGE matches explicit chain-of-thought supervised fine-tuning in the 4B ablation with a 3-5x lower decoded-token budget and improves a comparable instruction-tuned baseline by 10.2 points; on AndroidControl, it improves action grounding while generating over 75% fewer tokens.

Efficient and Accurate Quantized Image Super-Resolution on Mobile NPUs, Mobile AI & AIM 2022 challenge: ReportAndrey Ignatov, Radu Timofte, Maurizio Denna et al.
Image super-resolution is a common task on mobile and IoT devices, where one often needs to upscale and enhance low-resolution images and video frames. While numerous solutions have been proposed for this problem in the past, they are usually not compatible with low-power mobile NPUs having many computational and memory constraints. In this Mobile AI challenge, we address this problem and propose the participants to design an efficient quantized image super-resolution solution that can demonstrate a real-time performance on mobile NPUs. The participants were provided with the DIV2K dataset and trained INT8 models to do a high-quality 3X image upscaling. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the Synaptics VS680 Smart Home board with a dedicated edge NPU capable of accelerating quantized neural networks. All proposed solutions are fully compatible with the above NPU, demonstrating an up to 60 FPS rate when reconstructing Full HD resolution images. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.

VQFR: Blind Face Restoration with Vector-Quantized Dictionary and Parallel DecoderYuchao Gu, Xintao Wang, Liangbin Xie et al.
Although generative facial prior and geometric prior have recently demonstrated high-quality results for blind face restoration, producing fine-grained facial details faithful to inputs remains a challenging problem. Motivated by the classical dictionary-based methods and the recent vector quantization (VQ) technique, we propose a VQ-based face restoration method - VQFR. VQFR takes advantage of high-quality low-level feature banks extracted from high-quality faces and can thus help recover realistic facial details. However, the simple application of the VQ codebook cannot achieve good results with faithful details and identity preservation. Therefore, we further introduce two special network designs. 1). We first investigate the compression patch size in the VQ codebook and find that the VQ codebook designed with a proper compression patch size is crucial to balance the quality and fidelity. 2). To further fuse low-level features from inputs while not "contaminating" the realistic details generated from the VQ codebook, we proposed a parallel decoder consisting of a texture decoder and a main decoder. Those two decoders then interact with a texture warping module with deformable convolution. Equipped with the VQ codebook as a facial detail dictionary and the parallel decoder design, the proposed VQFR can largely enhance the restored quality of facial details while keeping the fidelity to previous methods.

Minimax-Optimal Reward-Agnostic Exploration in Reinforcement LearningGen Li, Yuling Yan, Yuxin Chen et al. · princeton
This paper studies reward-agnostic exploration in reinforcement learning (RL) -- a scenario where the learner is unware of the reward functions during the exploration stage -- and designs an algorithm that improves over the state of the art. More precisely, consider a finite-horizon inhomogeneous Markov decision process with $S$ states, $A$ actions, and horizon length $H$, and suppose that there are no more than a polynomial number of given reward functions of interest. By collecting an order of \begin{align*} \frac{SAH^3}{\varepsilon^2} \text{ sample episodes (up to log factor)} \end{align*} without guidance of the reward information, our algorithm is able to find $\varepsilon$-optimal policies for all these reward functions, provided that $\varepsilon$ is sufficiently small. This forms the first reward-agnostic exploration scheme in this context that achieves provable minimax optimality. Furthermore, once the sample size exceeds $\frac{S^2AH^3}{\varepsilon^2}$ episodes (up to log factor), our algorithm is able to yield $\varepsilon$ accuracy for arbitrarily many reward functions (even when they are adversarially designed), a task commonly dubbed as ``reward-free exploration.'' The novelty of our algorithm design draws on insights from offline RL: the exploration scheme attempts to maximize a critical reward-agnostic quantity that dictates the performance of offline RL, while the policy learning paradigm leverages ideas from sample-optimal offline RL paradigms.

C-MIG: Multi-view Information Gain-based Retrieval-Augmented Generation for Clinical Diagnosis ReasoningYuwei Miao, Gen Li, Yunsheng Zeng et al.
Retrieval-augmented generation combined with reinforcement learning has shown promise for grounding large language models in trustworthy medical evidence. However, existing methods rely on exact-match binary rewards, which in clinical diagnosis cause two issues: (i) semantically relevant but non-verbatim steps receive zero signal, discarding valuable learning signals; and (ii) uni-dimensional rewards cannot effectively supervise heterogeneous reasoning capabilities. To address these issues, we propose C-MIG, a Multi-view Information Gain-based retrieval-augmented generation framework for Clinical diagnosis. C-MIG estimates information gain under a frozen reference model from two complementary views, retrieved-document and document-refinement, to jointly guide what to retrieve and how to refine, alleviating the issues of valuable reward signal loss and credit assignment. We further design a multi-subquery retrieval augmentation strategy that improves knowledge recall coverage in clinical diagnostic scenarios. Comprehensive experiments on four medical benchmarks demonstrate that C-MIG achieves the best performance among all RAG-RL methods on both in-domain and out-of-domain sets, and outperforms state-of-the-art general-purpose LLMs for clinical diagnosis.

EAPO: Entropy-Driven Adaptive Positive-Negative Sample Weighting for Policy Optimization in Open-Ended QAYunsheng Zeng, Gen Li, Yuwei Miao et al.
Large Reasoning Models are typically trained via reinforcement learning from verifiable rewards (RLVR). However, existing approaches adopt fixed weights for positive and negative samples, and the conclusions hardly generalize to open-ended question answering (QA). In this paper, we systematically investigate the roles of positive and negative samples in reinforcement learning for open-ended QA. We propose a reward-mean-based strategy for distinguishing positive from negative samples, and observe that negative samples predominantly govern response diversity and the performance upper bound, whereas positive samples primarily determine response quality and convergence stability. Building on these observations, we propose EAPO, an Entropy-driven Adaptive Policy Optimization method that adaptively computes the weighting coefficients of positive samples based on the ratio of the current policy entropy to the initial entropy. During the entropy-decreasing phase, the weight assigned to positive samples is reduced to preserve exploration, whereas during the entropy-increasing phase it is amplified to reinforce stability, thereby mitigating entropy collapse. Experiments on two publicly available open-ended medical QA datasets demonstrate that EAPO consistently and substantially outperforms fixed-weight baselines in both response diversity and stability.

Settling the Sample Complexity of Model-Based Offline Reinforcement LearningGen Li, Laixi Shi, Yuxin Chen et al.
This paper is concerned with offline reinforcement learning (RL), which learns using pre-collected data without further exploration. Effective offline RL would be able to accommodate distribution shift and limited data coverage. However, prior algorithms or analyses either suffer from suboptimal sample complexities or incur high burn-in cost to reach sample optimality, thus posing an impediment to efficient offline RL in sample-starved applications. We demonstrate that the model-based (or "plug-in") approach achieves minimax-optimal sample complexity without burn-in cost for tabular Markov decision processes (MDPs). Concretely, consider a finite-horizon (resp. $γ$-discounted infinite-horizon) MDP with $S$ states and horizon $H$ (resp. effective horizon $\frac{1}{1-γ}$), and suppose the distribution shift of data is reflected by some single-policy clipped concentrability coefficient $C^{\star}_{\text{clipped}}$. We prove that model-based offline RL yields $\varepsilon$-accuracy with a sample complexity of \[ \begin{cases} \frac{H^{4}SC_{\text{clipped}}^{\star}}{\varepsilon^{2}} & (\text{finite-horizon MDPs}) \frac{SC_{\text{clipped}}^{\star}}{(1-γ)^{3}\varepsilon^{2}} & (\text{infinite-horizon MDPs}) \end{cases} \] up to log factor, which is minimax optimal for the entire $\varepsilon$-range. The proposed algorithms are "pessimistic" variants of value iteration with Bernstein-style penalties, and do not require sophisticated variance reduction. Our analysis framework is established upon delicate leave-one-out decoupling arguments in conjunction with careful self-bounding techniques tailored to MDPs.

Towards Faster Non-Asymptotic Convergence for Diffusion-Based Generative ModelsGen Li, Yuting Wei, Yuxin Chen et al.
Diffusion models, which convert noise into new data instances by learning to reverse a Markov diffusion process, have become a cornerstone in contemporary generative modeling. While their practical power has now been widely recognized, the theoretical underpinnings remain far from mature. In this work, we develop a suite of non-asymptotic theory towards understanding the data generation process of diffusion models in discrete time, assuming access to $\ell_2$-accurate estimates of the (Stein) score functions. For a popular deterministic sampler (based on the probability flow ODE), we establish a convergence rate proportional to $1/T$ (with $T$ the total number of steps), improving upon past results; for another mainstream stochastic sampler (i.e., a type of the denoising diffusion probabilistic model), we derive a convergence rate proportional to $1/\sqrt{T}$, matching the state-of-the-art theory. Imposing only minimal assumptions on the target data distribution (e.g., no smoothness assumption is imposed), our results characterize how $\ell_2$ score estimation errors affect the quality of the data generation processes. In contrast to prior works, our theory is developed based on an elementary yet versatile non-asymptotic approach without resorting to toolboxes for SDEs and ODEs. Further, we design two accelerated variants, improving the convergence to $1/T^2$ for the ODE-based sampler and $1/T$ for the DDPM-type sampler, which might be of independent theoretical and empirical interest.

LOCATE: Localize and Transfer Object Parts for Weakly Supervised Affordance GroundingGen Li, Varun Jampani, Deqing Sun et al.
Humans excel at acquiring knowledge through observation. For example, we can learn to use new tools by watching demonstrations. This skill is fundamental for intelligent systems to interact with the world. A key step to acquire this skill is to identify what part of the object affords each action, which is called affordance grounding. In this paper, we address this problem and propose a framework called LOCATE that can identify matching object parts across images, to transfer knowledge from images where an object is being used (exocentric images used for learning), to images where the object is inactive (egocentric ones used to test). To this end, we first find interaction areas and extract their feature embeddings. Then we learn to aggregate the embeddings into compact prototypes (human, object part, and background), and select the one representing the object part. Finally, we use the selected prototype to guide affordance grounding. We do this in a weakly supervised manner, learning only from image-level affordance and object labels. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods by a large margin on both seen and unseen objects.

Fast Computation of Optimal Transport via Entropy-Regularized Extragradient MethodsGen Li, Yanxi Chen, Yu Huang et al.
Efficient computation of the optimal transport distance between two distributions serves as an algorithm subroutine that empowers various applications. This paper develops a scalable first-order optimization-based method that computes optimal transport to within $\varepsilon$ additive accuracy with runtime $\widetilde{O}( n^2/\varepsilon)$, where $n$ denotes the dimension of the probability distributions of interest. Our algorithm achieves the state-of-the-art computational guarantees among all first-order methods, while exhibiting favorable numerical performance compared to classical algorithms like Sinkhorn and Greenkhorn. Underlying our algorithm designs are two key elements: (a) converting the original problem into a bilinear minimax problem over probability distributions; (b) exploiting the extragradient idea -- in conjunction with entropy regularization and adaptive learning rates -- to accelerate convergence.

Learning Precise Affordances from Egocentric Videos for Robotic ManipulationGen Li, Nikolaos Tsagkas, Jifei Song et al.
Affordance, defined as the potential actions that an object offers, is crucial for embodied AI agents. For example, such knowledge directs an agent to grasp a knife by the handle for cutting or by the blade for safe handover. While existing approaches have made notable progress, affordance research still faces three key challenges: data scarcity, poor generalization, and real-world deployment. Specifically, there is a lack of large-scale affordance datasets with precise segmentation maps, existing models struggle to generalize across different domains or novel object and affordance classes, and little work demonstrates deployability in real-world scenarios. In this work, we address these issues by proposing a complete affordance learning system that (1) takes in egocentric videos and outputs precise affordance annotations without human labeling, (2) leverages geometric information and vision foundation models to improve generalization, and (3) introduces a framework that facilitates affordance-oriented robotic manipulation such as tool grasping and robot-to-human tool handover. Experimental results show that our model surpasses the state-of-the-art by 13.8% in mIoU, and the framework achieves 77.1% successful grasping among 179 trials, including evaluations on seen, unseen classes, and cluttered scenes. One-Shot Open Affordance Learning with Foundation ModelsGen Li, Deqing Sun, Laura Sevilla-Lara et al.
We introduce One-shot Open Affordance Learning (OOAL), where a model is trained with just one example per base object category, but is expected to identify novel objects and affordances. While vision-language models excel at recognizing novel objects and scenes, they often struggle to understand finer levels of granularity such as affordances. To handle this issue, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of existing foundation models, to explore their inherent understanding of affordances and assess the potential for data-limited affordance learning. We then propose a vision-language framework with simple and effective designs that boost the alignment between visual features and affordance text embeddings. Experiments on two affordance segmentation benchmarks show that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art models with less than 1% of the full training data, and exhibits reasonable generalization capability on unseen objects and affordances.

Minimax-Optimal Multi-Agent RL in Markov Games With a Generative ModelGen Li, Yuejie Chi, Yuting Wei et al.
This paper studies multi-agent reinforcement learning in Markov games, with the goal of learning Nash equilibria or coarse correlated equilibria (CCE) sample-optimally. All prior results suffer from at least one of the two obstacles: the curse of multiple agents and the barrier of long horizon, regardless of the sampling protocol in use. We take a step towards settling this problem, assuming access to a flexible sampling mechanism: the generative model. Focusing on non-stationary finite-horizon Markov games, we develop a fast learning algorithm called \myalg~and an adaptive sampling scheme that leverage the optimism principle in online adversarial learning (particularly the Follow-the-Regularized-Leader (FTRL) method). Our algorithm learns an $\varepsilon$-approximate CCE in a general-sum Markov game using $$ \widetilde{O}\bigg( \frac{H^4 S \sum_{i=1}^m A_i}{\varepsilon^2} \bigg) $$ samples, where $m$ is the number of players, $S$ indicates the number of states, $H$ is the horizon, and $A_i$ denotes the number of actions for the $i$-th player. This is minimax-optimal (up to log factor) when the number of players is fixed. When applied to two-player zero-sum Markov games, our algorithm provably finds an $\varepsilon$-approximate Nash equilibrium with minimal samples. Along the way, we derive a refined regret bound for FTRL that makes explicit the role of variance-type quantities, which might be of independent interest.

MARS Policy: Multimodality Only When It MattersJindou Jia, Tuo An, Yuxuan Hu et al.
Imitation learning has become a cornerstone for solving complex robotic manipulation tasks. In particular, multimodality, which enables robots to capture diverse yet valid behavioral patterns, has driven the rapid emergence of generative policies as a dominant paradigm in robot learning. However, achieving such multimodality typically relies on stochastic noise initialization and iterative denoising procedures, resulting in substantial training complexity and low inference efficiency. Meanwhile, not all phases of a robotic task inherently require behavioral diversity. Motivated by this insight, we propose the Modality-Adaptive Robot Sampling (MARS) policy, which adaptively invokes tailored stochasticity only when it is truly beneficial, while reverting to an efficient deterministic learning during single-modal phases. In other words, the proper amount of noise is injected only at the proper time. By selectively activating multimodal generation, MARS policy bridges the gap between the multimodal capability of generative policies and the superior training and inference efficiency of deterministic models. Empirical studies across 8 simulated and 4 real-world tasks demonstrate that MARS exhibits robust multimodal expressivity and high efficiency, with a 16.67% success rate improvement and an 83.20% inference latency reduction in real-world tests. Counterintuitively, MARS also outpaces deterministic policies in training efficiency on near-deterministic tasks by more effectively modeling nuanced action diversity.

OccamToken: Efficient VLM Inference with Training-Free and Budget-Adaptive Token PruningGeng Li, Guohao Chen, Ting Chen et al.
Vision-language models (VLMs) rely on long visual token sequences for visual understanding, making the prefill stage expensive in both computation and memory. Most existing pruning methods follow an absolute-ranking paradigm, assigning importance scores to visual tokens and retaining a fixed top-K subset. In this work, we argue that this paradigm is fundamentally brittle: attention sinks distort token importance rankings, while image redundancy and query-dependent visual evidence make fixed token budgets unreliable across inputs. We propose OccamToken, a training-free framework that replaces absolute token ranking with register-anchored relative evidence testing. Instead of asking which tokens are globally important, OccamToken evaluates whether a visual token provides information beyond a register-based reference. Our key insight is that register tokens naturally absorb low-information attention patterns, making them a stable reference for identifying genuinely informative visual evidence. Based on this principle, OccamToken performs both image-adaptive redundancy pruning and query-adaptive relevance pruning through dynamic thresholds derived from register attention. Across LLaVA-NeXT, LLaVA-v1.5, and Qwen3-VL, OccamToken consistently improves the accuracy-efficiency trade-off without additional training. Notably, on LLaVA-NeXT, it reduces 2,880 visual tokens to approximately 40 while preserving over 93% of the original accuracy, enabling stable visual token compression even in the extreme 1.4% retention regime.

Gaze2Act: Gaze-Conditioned Vision-Language-Action Policies for Interactive Robot ManipulationKuangji Zuo, Gen Li, Bofan Lyu et al.
Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models have recently shown strong potential for robot learning by following language instructions. However, in practice, language alone is often insufficient to precisely convey human intent. It is difficult to describe which exact object to interact with among similar candidates, where to act on the object, or how the target may change during execution. To address this limitation, we propose Gaze2Act, a novel VLA framework that leverages human gaze as a dynamic and intuitive intent signal for complex interactive manipulation. Gaze2Act first bridges the ego-exo view gap by mapping first-person gaze into the robot's perspective through cross-view semantic matching, producing both an object mask and a gaze point for coarse-to-fine target specification. These cues are then integrated into the policy through perception-level prompting and action-level conditioning, allowing the robot to attend to relevant regions and execute precise interactions under dynamic intent. In a systematic evaluation across seven task categories and 16 real-robot tasks on a Unitree G1 humanoid, Gaze2Act achieves state-of-the-art performance in both intent accuracy and task success rate. It notably outperforms baselines in object disambiguation, fine-grained interaction, and dynamic intent steering. These results demonstrate that human gaze provides a natural, low-burden, and highly expressive modality for human-in-the-loop VLA control.

A Non-Asymptotic Framework for Approximate Message Passing in Spiked ModelsGen Li, Yuting Wei
Approximate message passing (AMP) emerges as an effective iterative paradigm for solving high-dimensional statistical problems. However, prior AMP theory -- which focused mostly on high-dimensional asymptotics -- fell short of predicting the AMP dynamics when the number of iterations surpasses $o\big(\frac{\log n}{\log\log n}\big)$ (with $n$ the problem dimension). To address this inadequacy, this paper develops a non-asymptotic framework for understanding AMP in spiked matrix estimation. Built upon new decomposition of AMP updates and controllable residual terms, we lay out an analysis recipe to characterize the finite-sample behavior of AMP in the presence of an independent initialization, which is further generalized to allow for spectral initialization. As two concrete consequences of the proposed analysis recipe: (i) when solving $\mathbb{Z}_2$ synchronization, we predict the behavior of spectrally initialized AMP for up to $O\big(\frac{n}{\mathrm{poly}\log n}\big)$ iterations, showing that the algorithm succeeds without the need of a subsequent refinement stage (as conjectured recently by \citet{celentano2021local}); (ii) we characterize the non-asymptotic behavior of AMP in sparse PCA (in the spiked Wigner model) for a broad range of signal-to-noise ratio.

PA-TCNet: Pathology-Aware Temporal Calibration with Physiology-Guided Target Refinement for Cross-Subject Motor Imagery EEG Decoding in Stroke PatientsXiangkai Wang, Yun Zhao, Dongyi He et al.
Stroke patient cross-subject electroencephalography (EEG) decoding of motor imagery (MI) brain-computer interface (BCI) is essential for motor rehabilitation, yet lesion-related abnormal temporal dynamics and pronounced inter-patient heterogeneity often undermine generalization. Existing adaptation methods are easily misled by pathological slow-wave activity and unstable target-domain pseudo-labels. To address this challenge, we propose PA-TCNet, a pathology-aware temporal calibration framework with physiology-guided target refinement for stroke motor imagery decoding. PA-TCNet integrates two coordinated components. The Pathology-aware Rhythmic State Mamba (PRSM) module decomposes EEG spatiotemporal features into slowly varying rhythmic context and fast transient perturbations, injecting the fused pathological context into selective state propagation to more effectively capture abnormal temporal dynamics. The Physiology-Guided Target Calibration (PGTC) module constructs source-domain sensorimotor region-of-interest templates, imposing physiological consistency constraints and dynamically refining target-domain pseudo-labels, thereby improving adaptation reliability. Leave-one-subject-out experiments on two independent stroke EEG datasets, XW-Stroke and 2019-Stroke, yielded mean accuracies of 66.56\% and 72.75\%, respectively, outperforming state-of-the-art baselines. These results indicate that jointly modeling pathological temporal dynamics and physiology-constrained pseudo-supervision can provide more robust cross-subject initialization for personalized post-stroke MI-BCI rehabilitation. Diffusion-based policies have recently achieved remarkable success in robotics by formulating action prediction as a conditional denoising process. However, the standard practice of sampling from random Gaussian noise often requires multiple iterative steps to produce clean actions, leading to high inference latency that incurs a major bottleneck for real-time control. In this paper, we challenge the necessity of uninformed noise sampling and propose Action-to-Action flow matching (A2A), a novel policy paradigm that shifts from random sampling to initialization informed by the previous proprioceptive action. Unlike existing methods that treat proprioceptive action feedback as static conditions, A2A leverages historical proprioceptive sequences, embedding them into a high-dimensional latent space as the starting point for action generation. This design bypasses costly iterative denoising while effectively capturing the robot's physical dynamics and temporal continuity. Extensive experiments demonstrate that A2A exhibits high training efficiency, fast inference speed, and improved generalization. Notably, A2A enables high-quality action generation in as few as a single inference step, and exhibits superior robustness to visual perturbations and enhanced generalization to unseen configurations. FaceFormer: Scale-aware Blind Face Restoration with TransformersAijin Li, Gen Li, Lei Sun et al.
Blind face restoration usually encounters with diverse scale face inputs, especially in the real world. However, most of the current works support specific scale faces, which limits its application ability in real-world scenarios. In this work, we propose a novel scale-aware blind face restoration framework, named FaceFormer, which formulates facial feature restoration as scale-aware transformation. The proposed Facial Feature Up-sampling (FFUP) module dynamically generates upsampling filters based on the original scale-factor priors, which facilitate our network to adapt to arbitrary face scales. Moreover, we further propose the facial feature embedding (FFE) module which leverages transformer to hierarchically extract diversity and robustness of facial latent. Thus, our FaceFormer achieves fidelity and robustness restored faces, which possess realistic and symmetrical details of facial components. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed method trained with synthetic dataset generalizes better to a natural low quality images than current state-of-the-arts.

However, extracting detailed, frame-by-frame information on player actions from these videos remains a challenge. Utilizing state-of-the-art computer vision technologies, our system can detect key objects such as soccer balls, players and referees. It also tracks the movements of players and the ball, recognizes player numbers, classifies scenes, and identifies highlights such as goal kicks. By analyzing live TV streams of soccer matches, our system can generate highlight GIFs, tactical illustrations, and diverse summary graphs of ongoing games. Through these visual recognition techniques, we deliver a comprehensive understanding of soccer game videos, enriching the viewer's experience with detailed and insightful analysis.

PALM: Progress-Aware Policy Learning via Affordance Reasoning for Long-Horizon Robotic ManipulationYuanzhe Liu, Jingyuan Zhu, Yuchen Mo et al.
Recent advancements in vision-language-action (VLA) models have shown promise in robotic manipulation, yet they continue to struggle with long-horizon, multi-step tasks. Existing methods lack internal reasoning mechanisms that can identify task-relevant interaction cues or track progress within a subtask, leading to critical execution errors such as repeated actions, missed steps, and premature termination. To address these challenges, we introduce PALM, a VLA framework that structures policy learning around interaction-centric affordance reasoning and subtask progress cues. PALM distills complementary affordance representations that capture object relevance, contact geometry, spatial placements, and motion dynamics, and serve as task-relevant anchors for visuomotor control. To further stabilize long-horizon execution, PALM predicts continuous within-subtask progress, enabling seamless subtask transitions. Across extensive simulation and real-world experiments, PALM consistently outperforms baselines, achieving a 91.8% success rate on LIBERO-LONG, a 12.5% improvement in average length on CALVIN ABC->D, and a 2x improvement over real-world baselines across three long-horizon generalization settings.

Watt For What: Rethinking Deep Learning's Energy-Performance RelationshipShreyank N Gowda, Xinyue Hao, Gen Li et al.
Deep learning models have revolutionized various fields, from image recognition to natural language processing, by achieving unprecedented levels of accuracy. However, their increasing energy consumption has raised concerns about their environmental impact, disadvantaging smaller entities in research and exacerbating global energy consumption. In this paper, we explore the trade-off between model accuracy and electricity consumption, proposing a metric that penalizes large consumption of electricity. We conduct a comprehensive study on the electricity consumption of various deep learning models across different GPUs, presenting a detailed analysis of their accuracy-efficiency trade-offs. By evaluating accuracy per unit of electricity consumed, we demonstrate how smaller, more energy-efficient models can significantly expedite research while mitigating environmental concerns. Our results highlight the potential for a more sustainable approach to deep learning, emphasizing the importance of optimizing models for efficiency. This research also contributes to a more equitable research landscape, where smaller entities can compete effectively with larger counterparts. This advocates for the adoption of efficient deep learning practices to reduce electricity consumption, safeguarding the environment for future generations whilst also helping ensure a fairer competitive landscape.

LibraGen: Playing a Balance Game in Subject-Driven Video GenerationJiahao Zhu, Shanshan Lao, Lijie Liu et al.
With the advancement of video generation foundation models (VGFMs), customized generation, particularly subject-to-video (S2V), has attracted growing attention. However, a key challenge lies in balancing the intrinsic priors of a VGFM, such as motion coherence, visual aesthetics, and prompt alignment, with its newly derived S2V capability. Existing methods often neglect this balance by enhancing one aspect at the expense of others. To address this, we propose LibraGen, a novel framework that views extending foundation models for S2V generation as a balance game between intrinsic VGFM strengths and S2V capability. Specifically, guided by the core philosophy of "Raising the Fulcrum, Tuning to Balance," we identify data quality as the fulcrum and advocate a quality-over-quantity approach. We construct a hybrid pipeline that combines automated and manual data filtering to improve overall data quality. To further harmonize the VGFM's native capabilities with its S2V extension, we introduce a Tune-to-Balance post-training paradigm. During supervised fine-tuning, both cross-pair and in-pair data are incorporated, and model merging is employed to achieve an effective trade-off. Subsequently, two tailored direct preference optimization (DPO) pipelines, namely Consis-DPO and Real-Fake DPO, are designed and merged to consolidate this balance. During inference, we introduce a time-dependent dynamic classifier-free guidance scheme to enable flexible and fine-grained control. Experimental results demonstrate that LibraGen outperforms both open-source and commercial S2V models using only thousand-scale training data.

Capture-Calibrate-Coach: A Graph-Based Framework for Knowledge Monitoring Estimation and Adaptive FeedbackGen Li, Li Chen, Cheng Tang et al.
Effective learning support requires understanding not only what learners know but also how accurately they perceive their own understanding. This metacognitive dimension, known as knowledge monitoring, fundamentally influences self-regulated learning, yet this dimension remains underexplored in current systems. This paper introduces the Capture-Calibrate-Coach (3C) framework for adaptive learning support. The Capture phase extracts learners' perceived knowledge states from open-ended self-reports to construct a heterogeneous graph linking learners and knowledge concepts. The Calibrate phase applies a heterogeneous graph neural network to infer latent perceived states for concepts not explicitly mentioned, enabling systematic knowledge monitoring assessment. The Coach phase classifies learners into five metacognitive patterns and delivers personalized feedback addressing both knowledge gaps and calibration errors. Evaluation with 684 students demonstrates 85.21% AUC in predicting latent perceived states, significantly outperforming baseline methods. A user study with 47 participants shows positive reception of feedback quality, with participants particularly valuing concrete feedback on knowledge gaps and actionable study guidance. These findings advance AI-based learning support toward metacognitive teammates that foster accurate self-awareness while supporting knowledge growth.

Bandwidth-Aware LLM Inference on Heterogeneous Many-Core SupercomputersYao Lu, Zhongzhi Luan, Gen Li et al.
Large language model (LLM) inference is limited by high computational cost and memory bandwidth demands, making deployment on heterogeneous many-core processors challenging. Taking the MT-3000 processor used in the Tianhe supercomputer as an example, its limited main-memory bandwidth and distributed memory hierarchy exemplify these bottlenecks, making it difficult to directly migrate existing GPU-based inference frameworks. To address this problem, we propose THInfer, a hardware-aware inference framework that maximizes data locality under bandwidth-constrained conditions through hardware-software co-design and parallel strategy optimization. THInfer incorporates three key techniques: (1) a high-performance operator library for the VLIW SIMD architecture, providing hand-optimized FP16 kernels that achieve up to 70 percent of the peak performance per cluster; (2) a density-driven computation graph fusion and unified kernel scheduling mechanism, combined with a staged pipelined attention fusion method; and (3) a Prefill-Buffer-Decode (P-B-D) pipeline and bounded buffer management strategy, which supports hybrid parallelism and enables efficient multi-cluster collaboration through two-level communication based on MPI and hthreads. Experiments on the Llama model series show that THInfer improves throughput on the 7B model by 62 percent to 73 percent over DeepSpeed on two V100S GPUs and by 67 percent to 84 percent over the A800 GPU. The 13B and 30B models also demonstrate comparable or better performance. Moreover, THInfer maintains stable performance on the 70B model, whereas typical GPU-based frameworks fail to run under the same setting. Overall, THInfer significantly enhances throughput, reduces latency, and improves scalability, providing a feasible system solution for efficient and scalable LLM inference on heterogeneous many-core architectures.

Data Overfitting for On-Device Super-Resolution with Dynamic Algorithm and Compiler Co-DesignGen Li, Zhihao Shu, Jie Ji et al.
Deep neural networks (DNNs) are frequently employed in a variety of computer vision applications. Nowadays, an emerging trend in the current video distribution system is to take advantage of DNN's overfitting properties to perform video resolution upscaling. By splitting videos into chunks and applying a super-resolution (SR) model to overfit each chunk, this scheme of SR models plus video chunks is able to replace traditional video transmission to enhance video quality and transmission efficiency. However, many models and chunks are needed to guarantee high performance, which leads to tremendous overhead on model switching and memory footprints at the user end. To resolve such problems, we propose a Dynamic Deep neural network assisted by a Content-Aware data processing pipeline to reduce the model number down to one (Dy-DCA), which helps promote performance while conserving computational resources. Additionally, to achieve real acceleration on the user end, we designed a framework that optimizes dynamic features (e.g., dynamic shapes, sizes, and control flow) in Dy-DCA to enable a series of compilation optimizations, including fused code generation, static execution planning, etc. By employing such techniques, our method achieves better PSNR and real-time performance (33 FPS) on an off-the-shelf mobile phone. Meanwhile, assisted by our compilation optimization, we achieve a 1.7$\times$ speedup while saving up to 1.61$\times$ memory consumption. Diffusion models, which convert noise into new data instances by learning to reverse a diffusion process, have become a cornerstone in contemporary generative modeling. In this work, we develop non-asymptotic convergence theory for a popular diffusion-based sampler (i.e., the probability flow ODE sampler) in discrete time, assuming access to $\ell_2$-accurate estimates of the (Stein) score functions. For distributions in $\mathbb{R}^d$, we prove that $d/\varepsilon$ iterations -- modulo some logarithmic and lower-order terms -- are sufficient to approximate the target distribution to within $\varepsilon$ total-variation distance. This is the first result establishing nearly linear dimension-dependency (in $d$) for the probability flow ODE sampler. Imposing only minimal assumptions on the target data distribution (e.g., no smoothness assumption is imposed), our results also characterize how $\ell_2$ score estimation errors affect the quality of the data generation processes. In contrast to prior works, our theory is developed based on an elementary yet versatile non-asymptotic approach without the need of resorting to SDE and ODE toolboxes.

CFSPMNet: Cross-subject Fourier-guided Spatial-Patch Mamba Network for EEG Motor Imagery Decoding in Stroke PatientsXiangkai Wang, Yun Zhao, Dongyi He et al.
Motor imagery electroencephalography (MI-EEG) decoding offers a non-invasive route for post-stroke rehabilitation, but cross-patient use remains difficult because pathological neural reorganization changes task-related EEG dynamics, aperiodic activity, local excitability, cross-regional coordination, and trial-level brain-state context. This makes source-learned MI representations unreliable for unseen patients. To address this problem, we propose CFSPMNet, a cross-patient adaptation framework that models post-stroke MI-EEG as latent neural-state organization. CFSPMNet combines a Fourier-Reorganized State Mamba Network (FRSM) with Shared-Private Prototype Matching (SPPM). FRSM represents each trial as a latent physiological token sequence, reorganizes token states in the Fourier domain, and uses Fourier-derived trial context to guide Mamba state-space propagation. SPPM improves target pseudo-label updating by combining semantic confidence with shared-private physiological consistency, filtering confident but physiologically inconsistent target predictions. Leave-one-subject-out experiments on two stroke MI-EEG datasets show that CFSPMNet outperforms representative CNN-, Transformer-, Mamba-, and adaptation-based baselines, achieving average accuracies of 68.23% on XW-Stroke and 73.33% on 2019-Stroke, with gains of 5.63 and 8.25 percentage points over the strongest competitors. Ablation, sensitivity, feature-alignment, pseudo-label selection, and neurophysiological visualization analyses further support the roles of Fourier-domain token-state reorganization and calibrated pseudo-label updating. These results suggest that latent neural-state modeling can improve rehabilitation-oriented cross-patient BCI decoding. Code is available at https://github.com/wxk1224/CFSPMNet.

Evaluating Large Language Models in Scientific DiscoveryZhangde Song, Jieyu Lu, Yuanqi Du et al.
Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly applied to scientific research, yet prevailing science benchmarks probe decontextualized knowledge and overlook the iterative reasoning, hypothesis generation, and observation interpretation that drive scientific discovery. We introduce a scenario-grounded benchmark that evaluates LLMs across biology, chemistry, materials, and physics, where domain experts define research projects of genuine interest and decompose them into modular research scenarios from which vetted questions are sampled. The framework assesses models at two levels: (i) question-level accuracy on scenario-tied items and (ii) project-level performance, where models must propose testable hypotheses, design simulations or experiments, and interpret results. Applying this two-phase scientific discovery evaluation (SDE) framework to state-of-the-art LLMs reveals a consistent performance gap relative to general science benchmarks, diminishing return of scaling up model sizes and reasoning, and systematic weaknesses shared across top-tier models from different providers. Large performance variation in research scenarios leads to changing choices of the best performing model on scientific discovery projects evaluated, suggesting all current LLMs are distant to general scientific "superintelligence". Nevertheless, LLMs already demonstrate promise in a great variety of scientific discovery projects, including cases where constituent scenario scores are low, highlighting the role of guided exploration and serendipity in discovery. This SDE framework offers a reproducible benchmark for discovery-relevant evaluation of LLMs and charts practical paths to advance their development toward scientific discovery.

Evo-1: Lightweight Vision-Language-Action Model with Preserved Semantic AlignmentTao Lin, Yilei Zhong, Yuxin Du et al.
Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models have emerged as a powerful framework that unifies perception, language, and control, enabling robots to perform diverse tasks through multimodal understanding. However, current VLA models typically contain massive parameters and rely heavily on large-scale robot data pretraining, leading to high computational costs during training, as well as limited deployability for real-time inference. Moreover, most training paradigms often degrade the perceptual representations of the vision-language backbone, resulting in overfitting and poor generalization to downstream tasks. In this work, we present Evo-1, a lightweight VLA model that reduces computation and improves deployment efficiency, while maintaining strong performance without pretraining on robot data. Evo-1 builds on a native multimodal Vision-Language model (VLM), incorporating a novel cross-modulated diffusion transformer along with an optimized integration module, together forming an effective architecture. We further introduce a two-stage training paradigm that progressively aligns action with perception, preserving the representations of the VLM. Notably, with only 0.77 billion parameters, Evo-1 achieves state-of-the-art results on the Meta-World and RoboTwin suite, surpassing the previous best models by 12.4% and 6.9%, respectively, and also attains a competitive result of 94.8% on LIBERO. In real-world evaluations, Evo-1 attains a 78% success rate with high inference frequency and low memory overhead, outperforming all baseline methods. We release code, data, and model weights to facilitate future research on lightweight and efficient VLA models.

O(d/T) Convergence Theory for Diffusion Probabilistic Models under Minimal AssumptionsGen Li, Yuling Yan
Score-based diffusion models, which generate new data by learning to reverse a diffusion process that perturbs data from the target distribution into noise, have achieved remarkable success across various generative tasks. Despite their superior empirical performance, existing theoretical guarantees are often constrained by stringent assumptions or suboptimal convergence rates. In this paper, we establish a fast convergence theory for the denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM), a widely used SDE-based sampler, under minimal assumptions. Our analysis shows that, provided $\ell_{2}$-accurate estimates of the score functions, the total variation distance between the target and generated distributions is upper bounded by $O(d/T)$ (ignoring logarithmic factors), where $d$ is the data dimensionality and $T$ is the number of steps. This result holds for any target distribution with finite first-order moment. Moreover, we show that with careful coefficient design, the convergence rate improves to $O(k/T)$, where $k$ is the intrinsic dimension of the target data distribution. This highlights the ability of DDPM to automatically adapt to unknown low-dimensional structures, a common feature of natural image distributions. These results are achieved through a novel set of analytical tools that provides a fine-grained characterization of how the error propagates at each step of the reverse process.

Despite recent progress in semantic image synthesis, complete control over image style remains a challenging problem. Existing methods require reference images to feed style information into semantic layouts, which indicates that the style is constrained by the given image. In this paper, we propose a model named RUCGAN for user controllable semantic image synthesis, which utilizes a singular color to represent the style of a specific semantic region. The proposed network achieves reference-free semantic image synthesis by injecting color as user-desired styles into each semantic layout, and is able to synthesize semantic images with unusual colors. Extensive experimental results on various challenging datasets show that the proposed method outperforms existing methods, and we further provide an interactive UI to demonstrate the advantage of our approach for style controllability.

Are First-Order Diffusion Samplers Really Slower? A Fast Forward-Value ApproachYuchen Jiao, Na Li, Changxiao Cai et al.
Higher-order ODE solvers have become a standard tool for accelerating diffusion probabilistic model (DPM) sampling, motivating the widespread view that first-order methods are inherently slower and that increasing discretization order is the primary path to faster generation. This paper challenges this belief and revisits acceleration from a complementary angle: beyond solver order, the placement of DPM evaluations along the reverse-time dynamics can substantially affect sampling accuracy in the low-neural function evaluation (NFE) regime. We propose a novel training-free, first-order sampler whose leading discretization error has the opposite sign to that of DDIM. Algorithmically, the method approximates the forward-value evaluation via a cheap one-step lookahead predictor. We provide theoretical guarantees showing that the resulting sampler provably approximates the ideal forward-value trajectory while retaining first-order convergence. Empirically, across standard image generation benchmarks (CIFAR-10, ImageNet, FFHQ, and LSUN), the proposed sampler consistently improves sample quality under the same NFE budget and can be competitive with, and sometimes outperform, state-of-the-art higher-order samplers. Overall, the results suggest that the placement of DPM evaluations provides an additional and largely independent design angle for accelerating diffusion sampling.

FLASH: Efficient Visuomotor Policy via Sparse SamplingJiaqi Bai, Jindou Jia, Yuxuan Hu et al.
Generative models such as diffusion and flow matching have become dominant paradigms for visuomotor policy learning, yet their reliance on iterative denoising incurs high inference latency incompatible with real-time robotic control. We present Fast Legendre-polynomial Action policy via Sparse History-anchored flow (FLASH Policy), which replaces discrete action-chunk generation with continuous Legendre polynomial trajectory representation. Specifically, by fitting expert demonstrations under sparse temporal sampling, FLASH enables a single inference to cover a significantly extended action horizon. To further accelerate generation, FLASH initiates the flow matching process from history polynomial coefficients rather than uninformative Gaussian noise, shortening the transport distance and enabling accurate single-step inference. Moreover, analytic polynomial differentiation directly provides desired velocity feed-forward signals to the torque controller without numerical approximation. Extensive experiments on five simulated and two real-world manipulation tasks demonstrate that FLASH achieves state-of-the-art success rates ($\ge 92\%$ across all tasks), a per-episode inference time of $31.40\,ms$ (up to $175\times$ faster than diffusion policies and $18\times$ faster than prior flow matching policies), up to $4\times$ faster training convergence than ACT, and $5\times$ to $7\times$ reduction in controller tracking error compared to discrete-action baselines.

Since convolutional neural networks perform well in learning generalizable image priors from large-scale data, these models have been widely used in image denoising tasks. However, the computational complexity increases dramatically as well on complex model. In this paper, We propose a novel lightweight Complementary Attention Module, which includes a density module and a sparse module, which can cooperatively mine dense and sparse features for feature complementary learning to build an efficient lightweight architecture. Moreover, to reduce the loss of details caused by denoising, this paper constructs a gradient-based structure-preserving branch. We utilize gradient-based branches to obtain additional structural priors for denoising, and make the model pay more attention to image geometric details through gradient loss optimization.Based on the above, we propose an efficiently Unet structured network with dual branch, the visual results show that can effectively preserve the structural details of the original image, we evaluate benchmarks including SIDD and DND, where SCANet achieves state-of-the-art performance in PSNR and SSIM while significantly reducing computational cost.

Feedback World Model Enables Precise Guidance of Diffusion PolicyTuo An, Jindou Jia, Gen Li et al.
World models aim to improve robotic decision making by predicting the consequences of actions. However, in practice, their predictions often become unreliable once the robot encounters states outside the training distribution, limiting their effectiveness at deployment. We observe that execution itself provides a natural but underutilized signal: after each action, the robot directly observes the true next state, revealing the mismatch between predicted and actual outcomes. Building on this insight, we propose feedback world model, a new paradigm that closes the loop between prediction and observation at inference time. Instead of treating the world model as a static open-loop predictor, our method maintains a lightweight feedback state that is updated online to iteratively correct future predictions, compensating for model errors using real-time observations without additional training data or parameter updates. We show that this process can be interpreted as a latent-space observer and admits convergence guarantees under mild conditions. We further introduce action-aware guidance to better translate corrected predictions into control by emphasizing action-controllable components while suppressing irrelevant variations. Experiments on LIBERO-Plus, Robomimic, and real-world manipulation tasks demonstrate that our method substantially improves both prediction accuracy and policy performance under distribution shift. In particular, it reduces world model prediction error by up to 76.4% and improves out-of-distribution (OOD) success rate by 30%. These results show that incorporating real-time feedback at inference time provides a simple yet powerful alternative to static world modeling.

Condense, Don't Just Prune: Enhancing Efficiency and Performance in MoE Layer PruningMingyu Cao, Gen Li, Jie Ji et al.
Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) has garnered significant attention for its ability to scale up neural networks while utilizing the same or even fewer active parameters. However, MoE does not alleviate the massive memory requirements of networks, which limits their practicality in real-world applications, especially in the era of large language models (LLMs). While recent work explores the possibility of removing entire layers of MoE to reduce memory, the performance degradation is still notable. In this paper, we propose ConDense-MoE (CD-MoE), which, instead of dropping the entire MoE layer, condenses the large, sparse MoE layer into a smaller, denser layer with only a few experts activated for all tokens, while maintaining hardware friendliness. Our approach is specifically designed for fine-grained MoE with shared experts, where Feed-Forward Networks are split into many small experts, with certain experts isolated to serve as shared experts that are always activated, such as DeepSeekMoE and QwenMoE. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Specifically, for the DeepSeekMoE-16B model, our approach maintains 90% of the average accuracy while reducing memory usage by 27.5% and increasing inference speed by 1.26 times. Moreover, we show that by applying lightweight expert fine-tuning -- only to the condensed layers -- and using 5 hours on a single 80G A100 GPU, we can successfully recover 98% of the original performance.
