The Duality of Generative AI and Reinforcement Learning in Robotics: A ReviewAngelo Moroncelli, Vishal Soni, Marco Forgione et al.
Recently, generative AI and reinforcement learning (RL) have been redefining what is possible for AI agents that take information flows as input and produce intelligent behavior. As a result, we are seeing similar advancements in embodied AI and robotics for control policy generation. Our review paper examines the integration of generative AI models with RL to advance robotics. Our primary focus is on the duality between generative AI and RL for robotics downstream tasks. Specifically, we investigate: (1) The role of prominent generative AI tools as modular priors for multi-modal input fusion in RL tasks. (2) How RL can train, fine-tune and distill generative models for policy generation, such as VLA models, similarly to RL applications in large language models. We then propose a new taxonomy based on a considerable amount of selected papers. Lastly, we identify open challenges accounting for model scalability, adaptation and grounding, giving recommendations and insights on future research directions. We reflect on which generative AI models best fit the RL tasks and why. On the other side, we reflect on important issues inherent to RL-enhanced generative policies, such as safety concerns and failure modes, and what are the limitations of current methods. A curated collection of relevant research papers is maintained on our GitHub repository, serving as a resource for ongoing research and development in this field: https://github.com/clmoro/Robotics-RL-FMs-Integration.

Survey on Semantic Interpretation of Tabular Data: Challenges and DirectionsMarco Cremaschi, Blerina Spahiu, Matteo Palmonari et al.
Tabular data plays a pivotal role in various fields, making it a popular format for data manipulation and exchange, particularly on the web. The interpretation, extraction, and processing of tabular information are invaluable for knowledge-intensive applications. Notably, significant efforts have been invested in annotating tabular data with ontologies and entities from background knowledge graphs, a process known as Semantic Table Interpretation (STI). STI automation aids in building knowledge graphs, enriching data, and enhancing web-based question answering. This survey aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the STI landscape. It starts by categorizing approaches using a taxonomy of 31 attributes, allowing for comparisons and evaluations. It also examines available tools, assessing them based on 12 criteria. Furthermore, the survey offers an in-depth analysis of the Gold Standards used for evaluating STI approaches. Finally, it provides practical guidance to help end-users choose the most suitable approach for their specific tasks while also discussing unresolved issues and suggesting potential future research directions.

PuckTrick: A Library for Making Synthetic Data More RealisticAlessandra Agostini, Andrea Maurino, Blerina Spahiu
The increasing reliance on machine learning (ML) models for decision-making requires high-quality training data. However, access to real-world datasets is often restricted due to privacy concerns, proprietary restrictions, and incomplete data availability. As a result, synthetic data generation (SDG) has emerged as a viable alternative, enabling the creation of artificial datasets that preserve the statistical properties of real data while ensuring privacy compliance. Despite its advantages, synthetic data is often overly clean and lacks real-world imperfections, such as missing values, noise, outliers, and misclassified labels, which can significantly impact model generalization and robustness. To address this limitation, we introduce Pucktrick, a Python library designed to systematically contaminate synthetic datasets by introducing controlled errors. The library supports multiple error types, including missing data, noisy values, outliers, label misclassification, duplication, and class imbalance, offering a structured approach to evaluating ML model resilience under real-world data imperfections. Pucktrick provides two contamination modes: one for injecting errors into clean datasets and another for further corrupting already contaminated datasets. Through extensive experiments on real-world financial datasets, we evaluate the impact of systematic data contamination on model performance. Our findings demonstrate that ML models trained on contaminated synthetic data outperform those trained on purely synthetic, error-free data, particularly for tree-based and linear models such as SVMs and Extra Trees.
