PVN3D: A Deep Point-wise 3D Keypoints Voting Network for 6DoF Pose Estimation

Yisheng He, Wei Sun, Haibin Huang et al.

In this work, we present a novel data-driven method for robust 6DoF object pose estimation from a single RGBD image. Unlike previous methods that directly regressing pose parameters, we tackle this challenging task with a keypoint-based approach. Specifically, we propose a deep Hough voting network to detect 3D keypoints of objects and then estimate the 6D pose parameters within a least-squares fitting manner. Our method is a natural extension of 2D-keypoint approaches that successfully work on RGB based 6DoF estimation. It allows us to fully utilize the geometric constraint of rigid objects with the extra depth information and is easy for a network to learn and optimize. Extensive experiments were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of 3D-keypoint detection in the 6D pose estimation task. Experimental results also show our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by large margins on several benchmarks. Code and video are available at https://github.com/ethnhe/PVN3D.git.

iShape: A First Step Towards Irregular Shape Instance Segmentation

Lei Yang, Yan Zi Wei, Yisheng HE et al.

In this paper, we introduce a brand new dataset to promote the study of instance segmentation for objects with irregular shapes. Our key observation is that though irregularly shaped objects widely exist in daily life and industrial scenarios, they received little attention in the instance segmentation field due to the lack of corresponding datasets. To fill this gap, we propose iShape, an irregular shape dataset for instance segmentation. iShape contains six sub-datasets with one real and five synthetics, each represents a scene of a typical irregular shape. Unlike most existing instance segmentation datasets of regular objects, iShape has many characteristics that challenge existing instance segmentation algorithms, such as large overlaps between bounding boxes of instances, extreme aspect ratios, and large numbers of connected components per instance. We benchmark popular instance segmentation methods on iShape and find their performance drop dramatically. Hence, we propose an affinity-based instance segmentation algorithm, called ASIS, as a stronger baseline. ASIS explicitly combines perception and reasoning to solve Arbitrary Shape Instance Segmentation including irregular objects. Experimental results show that ASIS outperforms the state-of-the-art on iShape. Dataset and code are available at https://ishape.github.io

Learned Interpretable Residual Extragradient ISTA for Sparse Coding

Lin Kong, Wei Sun, Fanhua Shang et al.

Recently, the study on learned iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm (LISTA) has attracted increasing attentions. A large number of experiments as well as some theories have proved the high efficiency of LISTA for solving sparse coding problems. However, existing LISTA methods are all serial connection. To address this issue, we propose a novel extragradient based LISTA (ELISTA), which has a residual structure and theoretical guarantees. In particular, our algorithm can also provide the interpretability for Res-Net to a certain extent. From a theoretical perspective, we prove that our method attains linear convergence. In practice, extensive empirical results verify the advantages of our method.

Real time backbone for semantic segmentation

Zhengeng Yang, Hongshan Yu, Qiang Fu et al.

The rapid development of autonomous driving in recent years presents lots of challenges for scene understanding. As an essential step towards scene understanding, semantic segmentation thus received lots of attention in past few years. Although deep learning based state-of-the-arts have achieved great success in improving the segmentation accuracy, most of them suffer from an inefficiency problem and can hardly applied to practical applications. In this paper, we systematically analyze the computation cost of Convolutional Neural Network(CNN) and found that the inefficiency of CNN is mainly caused by its wide structure rather than the deep structure. In addition, the success of pruning based model compression methods proved that there are many redundant channels in CNN. Thus, we designed a very narrow while deep backbone network to improve the efficiency of semantic segmentation. By casting our network to FCN32 segmentation architecture, the basic structure of most segmentation methods, we achieved 60.6\% mIoU on Cityscape val dataset with 54 frame per seconds(FPS) on $1024\times2048$ inputs, which already outperforms one of the earliest real time deep learning based segmentation methods: ENet.

Interpretable Spatio-temporal Attention for Video Action Recognition

Lili Meng, Bo Zhao, Bo Chang et al.

Inspired by the observation that humans are able to process videos efficiently by only paying attention where and when it is needed, we propose an interpretable and easy plug-in spatial-temporal attention mechanism for video action recognition. For spatial attention, we learn a saliency mask to allow the model to focus on the most salient parts of the feature maps. For temporal attention, we employ a convolutional LSTM based attention mechanism to identify the most relevant frames from an input video. Further, we propose a set of regularizers to ensure that our attention mechanism attends to coherent regions in space and time. Our model not only improves video action recognition accuracy, but also localizes discriminative regions both spatially and temporally, despite being trained in a weakly-supervised manner with only classification labels (no bounding box labels or time frame temporal labels). We evaluate our approach on several public video action recognition datasets with ablation studies. Furthermore, we quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate our model's ability to localize discriminative regions spatially and critical frames temporally. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of our approach, showing superior or comparable accuracy with the state-of-the-art methods while increasing model interpretability.

Towards Interpretable R-CNN by Unfolding Latent Structures

Tianfu Wu, Wei Sun, Xilai Li et al.

This paper first proposes a method of formulating model interpretability in visual understanding tasks based on the idea of unfolding latent structures. It then presents a case study in object detection using popular two-stage region-based convolutional network (i.e., R-CNN) detection systems. We focus on weakly-supervised extractive rationale generation, that is learning to unfold latent discriminative part configurations of object instances automatically and simultaneously in detection without using any supervision for part configurations. We utilize a top-down hierarchical and compositional grammar model embedded in a directed acyclic AND-OR Graph (AOG) to explore and unfold the space of latent part configurations of regions of interest (RoIs). We propose an AOGParsing operator to substitute the RoIPooling operator widely used in R-CNN. In detection, a bounding box is interpreted by the best parse tree derived from the AOG on-the-fly, which is treated as the qualitatively extractive rationale generated for interpreting detection. We propose a folding-unfolding method to train the AOG and convolutional networks end-to-end. In experiments, we build on R-FCN and test our method on the PASCAL VOC 2007 and 2012 datasets. We show that the method can unfold promising latent structures without hurting the performance.
