CARMA: Comprehensive Automatically-annotated Reddit Mental Health Dataset for Arabic

Mental health disorders affect millions worldwide, yet early detection remains a major challenge, particularly for Arabic-speaking populations where resources are limited and mental health discourse is often discouraged due to cultural stigma. While substantial research has focused on English-language mental health detection, Arabic remains significantly underexplored, partly due to the scarcity of annotated datasets. We present CARMA, the first automatically annotated large-scale dataset of Arabic Reddit posts. The dataset encompasses six mental health conditions, such as Anxiety, Autism, and Depression, and a control group. CARMA surpasses existing resources in both scale and diversity. We conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses of lexical and semantic differences between users, providing insights into the linguistic markers of specific mental health conditions. To demonstrate the dataset's potential for further mental health analysis, we perform classification experiments using a range of models, from shallow classifiers to large language models. Our results highlight the promise of advancing mental health detection in underrepresented languages such as Arabic.

Linguistic Accommodation Between Neurodivergent Communities on Reddit:A Communication Accommodation Theory Analysis of ADHD and Autism Groups

Social media research on mental health has focused predominantly on detecting and diagnosing conditions at the individual level. In this work, we shift attention to \emph{intergroup} behavior, examining how two prominent neurodivergent communities, ADHD and autism, adjust their language when engaging with each other on Reddit. Grounded in Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT), we first establish that each community maintains a distinct linguistic profile as measured by Language Inquiry and Word Count Lexicon (LIWC). We then show that these profiles shift in opposite directions when users cross community boundaries: features that are elevated in one group's home community decrease when its members post in the other group's space, and vice versa, consistent with convergent accommodation. The involvement of topic-independent summary variables (Authentic, Clout) in these shifts provides partial evidence against a purely topical explanation. Finally, in an exploratory longitudinal analysis around the moment of public diagnosis disclosure, we find that its effects on linguistic style are small and, in some cases, directionally opposite to cross-community accommodation, providing initial evidence that situational audience adaptation and longer-term identity processes may involve different mechanisms. Our findings contribute to understanding intergroup communication dynamics among neurodivergent populations online and carry implications for community moderation and clinical perspectives on these conditions.

Style Transfer as Bias Mitigation: Diffusion Models for Synthetic Mental Health Text for Arabic

Synthetic data offers a promising solution for mitigating data scarcity and demographic bias in mental health analysis, yet existing approaches largely rely on pretrained large language models (LLMs), which may suffer from limited output diversity and propagate biases inherited from their training data. In this work, we propose a pretraining-free diffusion-based approach for synthetic text generation that frames bias mitigation as a style transfer problem. Using the CARMA Arabic mental health corpus, which exhibits a substantial gender imbalance, we focus on male-to-female style transfer to augment underrepresented female-authored content. We construct five datasets capturing varying linguistic and semantic aspects of gender expression in Arabic and train separate diffusion models for each setting. Quantitative evaluations demonstrate consistently high semantic fidelity between source and generated text, alongside meaningful surface-level stylistic divergence, while qualitative analysis confirms linguistically plausible gender transformations. Our results show that diffusion-based style transfer can generate high-entropy, semantically faithful synthetic data without reliance on pretrained LLMs, providing an effective and flexible framework for mitigating gender bias in sensitive, low-resource mental health domains.

Quantum Frog: Emergent Cooperation and Difficulty Scaling in a Quantized-Time Cooperative Game

We introduce \emph{Quantum Frog}, a two-player cooperative game built on a novel \emph{quantized-time} mechanic in which the environment advances only when a player acts. Inspired by the classic arcade game Frogger, Quantum Frog requires two frogs to cross an 8$\times$8 grid of traffic and reach the far side together. We use reinforcement learning (RL) as an analytical lens to answer four design questions: (1) how does game difficulty scale with traffic density, (2) what is the optimal single-agent policy and why, (3) how large is the cooperation gap between independent and cooperative two-agent play, and (4) what joint strategy emerges when agents are incentivised to cooperate? We train agents through five escalating stages, Tabular Q-Learning, Deep Q-Network (\DQN), Independent \DQN~(\IDQN), and Multi-Agent Proximal Policy Optimisation (\MAPPO\ with a centralised critic), evaluating each against traffic densities of one to six cars. Our key findings are: (i) the quantized-time mechanic makes a \emph{rush strategy} (moving directly upward at every step) universally optimal, as time exposure to traffic is minimised; (ii) adding an uncoordinated second player is harder than sextupling the traffic for a single expert player; (iii) cooperative training recovers +32--34 percentage points of joint success rate relative to independent agents and reduces episode length from $\sim$90 to $\sim$6 steps; and (iv) the emergent cooperative strategy is synchronised rushing, not complex positional coordination, illustrating that shared incentives alone suffice to align agents in time-critical cooperative tasks. These findings provide concrete, empirically grounded guidance for the commercial design of Quantum Frog and offer broader insights into the role of environment mechanics in shaping multi-agent learning dynamics.
