A D2D-based Protocol for Ultra-Reliable Wireless Communications for Industrial Automation

As one indispensable use case for the 5G wireless systems on the roadmap, ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC) is a crucial requirement for the coming era of wireless industrial automation. This paper aims to develop communication techniques for making such a paradigm shift from the conventional human-type broadband communications to the emerging machine-type URLLC. One fundamental task for URLLC is to deliver a short command from the controller to each actuator within the stringent delay requirement and also with high-reliability in the downlink. Motivated by the geographic feature in industrial automation that in the factories many tasks are assigned to different groups of devices who work in close proximity to each other and thus can form clusters of reliable device-to-device (D2D) networks, this paper proposes a novel two-phase transmission protocol for achieving the above goal. Specifically, in the first phase within the latency requirement, the multi-antenna base station (BS) combines the messages of each group together and multicasts them to the corresponding groups; while in the second phase, the devices that have decoded the messages successfully, who are defined as the leaders, help relay the messages to the other devices in their groups. Under this protocol, we further design an innovative leader selection based beamforming strategy at the BS by utilizing the sparse optimization technique, which leads to the desired sparsity pattern in user activity, i.e., at least one leader exists in each group, in the first phase, thus making full utilization of the reliable D2D networks in the second phase. Simulation results are provided to show that the proposed two-phase transmission protocol considerably improves the reliability of the whole system within the stringent latency requirement as compared to other existing schemes for URLLC such as Occupy CoW.

YouZhi: Towards High-Concurrency Financial LLMs via Adaptive GQA-to-MLA Transition

Large language models (LLMs) drive significant financial innovations, yet their high-concurrency deployment is severely bottlenecked by KV cache memory overhead, which inflates infrastructure costs and throttles scalability. To address this, we propose YouZhi-LLM, a highly efficient financial LLM empowered by a comprehensive structural transition and training pipeline natively built on the Huawei Ascend ecosystem. At its algorithmic core, YouZhi-LLM features a layer-adaptive GQA-to-MLA transition framework that dynamically assigns per-layer FreqFold sizes, maximizing KV-cache compression while minimizing perplexity degradation. To recover representation capacity and inject domain expertise, the Ascend-based training pipeline seamlessly integrates generalized knowledge distillation with financial-specific supervised fine-tuning. Evaluations demonstrate the superiority of this systematic approach, with the adaptive transition reducing perplexity degradation by up to 35% over uniform baselines. Crucially, when evaluated on Ascend NPUs via vLLM-Ascend, the massive KV-cache reduction translates directly into deployment efficiency. Compared to their respective base models, YouZhi-7B yields a 12.3% improvement in average financial benchmark score alongside a 2.69$\times$ increase in maximum concurrency; similarly, YouZhi-14B achieves a 7.0% accuracy gain and a 2.43$\times$ concurrency boost, establishing a new paradigm for cost-effective, high-throughput financial inference.

See, Plan, Predict: Language-guided Cognitive Planning with Video Prediction

Cognitive planning is the structural decomposition of complex tasks into a sequence of future behaviors. In the computational setting, performing cognitive planning entails grounding plans and concepts in one or more modalities in order to leverage them for low level control. Since real-world tasks are often described in natural language, we devise a cognitive planning algorithm via language-guided video prediction. Current video prediction models do not support conditioning on natural language instructions. Therefore, we propose a new video prediction architecture which leverages the power of pre-trained transformers.The network is endowed with the ability to ground concepts based on natural language input with generalization to unseen objects. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach on a new simulation dataset, where each task is defined by a high-level action described in natural language. Our experiments compare our method again stone video generation baseline without planning or action grounding and showcase significant improvements. Our ablation studies highlight an improved generalization to unseen objects that natural language embeddings offer to concept grounding ability, as well as the importance of planning towards visual "imagination" of a task.

Learning cross space mapping via DNN using large scale click-through logs

The gap between low-level visual signals and high-level semantics has been progressively bridged by continuous development of deep neural network (DNN). With recent progress of DNN, almost all image classification tasks have achieved new records of accuracy. To extend the ability of DNN to image retrieval tasks, we proposed a unified DNN model for image-query similarity calculation by simultaneously modeling image and query in one network. The unified DNN is named the cross space mapping (CSM) model, which contains two parts, a convolutional part and a query-embedding part. The image and query are mapped to a common vector space via these two parts respectively, and image-query similarity is naturally defined as an inner product of their mappings in the space. To ensure good generalization ability of the DNN, we learn weights of the DNN from a large number of click-through logs which consists of 23 million clicked image-query pairs between 1 million images and 11.7 million queries. Both the qualitative results and quantitative results on an image retrieval evaluation task with 1000 queries demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.

Multi-Carrier Modulation: An Evolution from Time-Frequency Domain to Delay-Doppler Domain

The recently proposed orthogonal delay-Doppler division multiplexing (ODDM) modulation, which is a delay-Doppler (DD) domain multi-carrier (DDMC) modulation scheme based on the DD domain orthogonal pulse (DDOP), is studied. We first revisit the linear time-varying (LTV) channel model for the wireless channel, and review the conventional multi-carrier (MC) modulation schemes and their design guidelines for both linear time-invariant (LTI) and LTV channels. We then focus on the representation of the LTV channel in an equivalent sampled DD (ESDD) domain, and propose an impulse-function-based transmission strategy for the ESDD channel. Next, we take an in-depth look into the DDOP and show that it achieves orthogonality with respect to the fine time and frequency resolutions in the ESDD domain thus behaves like an impulse function. This allows us to unveil the unique input-output relation of the resultant ODDM modulation over the ESDD channel. We point out that the conventional MC modulation design guidelines based on the Weyl-Heisenberg (WH) frame theory can be relaxed without compromising its orthogonality or violating the WH frame theory. More specifically, for a practical communication system with bandwidth and duration constraints, MC modulation signals can be designed considering so-called local or sufficient (bi)orthogonality, which refers to the (bi)orthogonality among a WH subset for the MC signal within a specific bandwidth and duration. This novel design guideline could potentially open up opportunities for developing future waveforms required by new applications such as communication systems associated with high delay and/or Doppler shifts, as well as integrated sensing and communications.

Bidirectional Correlation-Driven Inter-Frame Interaction Transformer for Referring Video Object Segmentation

Referring video object segmentation (RVOS) aims to segment the target object in a video sequence described by a language expression. Typical multimodal Transformer based RVOS approaches process video sequence in a frame-independent manner to reduce the high computational cost, which however restricts the performance due to the lack of inter-frame interaction for temporal coherence modeling and spatio-temporal representation learning of the referred object. Besides, the absence of sufficient cross-modal interactions results in weak correlation between the visual and linguistic features, which increases the difficulty of decoding the target information and limits the performance of the model. In this paper, we propose a bidirectional correlation-driven inter-frame interaction Transformer, dubbed BIFIT, to address these issues in RVOS. Specifically, we design a lightweight and plug-and-play inter-frame interaction module in the Transformer decoder to efficiently learn the spatio-temporal features of the referred object, so as to decode the object information in the video sequence more precisely and generate more accurate segmentation results. Moreover, a bidirectional vision-language interaction module is implemented before the multimodal Transformer to enhance the correlation between the visual and linguistic features, thus facilitating the language queries to decode more precise object information from visual features and ultimately improving the segmentation performance. Extensive experimental results on four benchmarks validate the superiority of our BIFIT over state-of-the-art methods and the effectiveness of our proposed modules.

Refining Few-Step Text-to-Multiview Diffusion via Reinforcement Learning

Text-to-multiview (T2MV) diffusion models have shown great promise in generating multiple views of a scene from a single text prompt. While few-step backbones enable real-time T2MV generation, they often compromise key aspects of generation quality, such as per-view fidelity and cross-view consistency. Reinforcement learning (RL) finetuning offers a potential solution, yet existing approaches designed for single-image diffusion do not readily extend to the few-step T2MV setting, as they neglect cross-view coordination and suffer from weak learning signals in few-step regimes. To address this, we propose MVC-ZigAL, a tailored RL finetuning framework for few-step T2MV diffusion models. Specifically, its core insights are: (1) a new MDP formulation that jointly models all generated views and assesses their collective quality via a joint-view reward; (2) a novel advantage learning strategy that exploits the performance gains of a self-refinement sampling scheme over standard sampling, yielding stronger learning signals for effective RL finetuning; and (3) a unified RL framework that extends advantage learning with a Lagrangian dual formulation for multiview-constrained optimization, balancing single-view and joint-view objectives through adaptive primal-dual updates under a self-paced threshold curriculum that harmonizes exploration and constraint enforcement. Collectively, these designs enable robust and balanced RL finetuning for few-step T2MV diffusion models, yielding substantial gains in both per-view fidelity and cross-view consistency. $\mathbb{USCD}$: Improving Code Generation of LLMs by Uncertainty-Aware Selective Contrastive Decoding

Large language models (LLMs) have shown remarkable capabilities in code generation. However, the effects of hallucinations (e.g., output noise) make it particularly challenging for LLMs to generate high-quality code in one pass. In this work, we propose a simple and effective \textbf{u}ncertainty-aware \textbf{s}elective \textbf{c}ontrastive \textbf{d}ecoding ($\mathbb{USCD}$) mechanism to improve the quality of one-pass code generation in LLMs and reduce the impact of output noise. To be specific, we first elaborately designed a negative prompt (namely lame prompt) to output noise by removing input-output examples from the standard few-shot prompt. Our preliminary study shows that the Jensen-Shannon divergence (JS divergence) between token distribution uncertainty and the output noise is relatively low (approximately $0.25$), indicating their high relevance. Then, we selectively eliminate output noise induced by lame prompts based on the uncertainty of the prediction distribution from the standard prompt. Notably, our proposed plug-and-play mechanism is an inference-only method, enjoying appealing flexibility. Extensive experiments on widely used benchmarks, e.g., HumanEval, MBPP, and MultiPL-E, upon several LLMs (i.e., Inocder-6b, CodeLlama-7b, WizardCoder-15b, StarCoder, and Llama2-7b), demonstrate that our proposed USCD significantly improves one-pass code generation, with an average \textit{pass@$1$} scores increase of 16.59\%. Uplink-Downlink Duality for Beamforming in Integrated Sensing and Communications

This paper considers the beamforming and power optimization problem for a class of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) problems that utilize the communication signals simultaneously for sensing. We formulate the problem of minimizing the Bayesian Cramér-Rao bound (BCRB) on the mean-squared error of estimating a vector of parameters, while satisfying downlink signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio constraints for a set of communication users at the same time. The proposed optimization framework comprises two key new ingredients. First, we show that the BCRB minimization problem corresponds to maximizing beamforming power along certain sensing directions of interest. Second, the classical uplink-downlink duality for multiple-input multiple-output communications can be extended to the ISAC setting, but unlike the classical communication problem, the dual uplink problem for ISAC may entail negative noise power and needs to include an extra condition on the uplink beamformers. This new duality theory opens doors for efficient iterative algorithm for optimizing power and beamformers for ISAC.

MosaicMem: Hybrid Spatial Memory for Controllable Video World Models

Video diffusion models are moving beyond short, plausible clips toward world simulators that must remain consistent under camera motion, revisits, and intervention. Yet spatial memory remains a key bottleneck: explicit 3D structures can improve reprojection-based consistency but struggle to depict moving objects, while implicit memory often produces inaccurate camera motion even with correct poses. We propose Mosaic Memory (MosaicMem), a hybrid spatial memory that lifts patches into 3D for reliable localization and targeted retrieval, while exploiting the model's native conditioning to preserve prompt-following generation. MosaicMem composes spatially aligned patches in the queried view via a patch-and-compose interface, preserving what should persist while allowing the model to inpaint what should evolve. With PRoPE camera conditioning and two new memory alignment methods, experiments show improved pose adherence compared to implicit memory and stronger dynamic modeling than explicit baselines. MosaicMem further enables minute-level navigation, memory-based scene editing, and autoregressive rollout.

Anti-lock Brake System for Integrated Electric Parking Brake Actuator Based on Sliding-mode Control

Integrated electric parking brake (iEPB) is popularizing on passenger cars due to its easier operation and automatic functions. As a parking brake, EPB have to act as the secondary brake system in case of hydraulic brake failure. To guarantee the stability and safety of a car during iEPB braking, the rear slip ratio has to be controlled accurately within the optimized value to get the shortest brake distance without undesired loss of control. In this paper, a sliding-mode controller (SMC) is investigated to achieve rear-wheel anti-lock brake control, which is robust against uncertainties and disturbance of the parameters. And a sliding-mode observer (SMO) is present to estimate the load torque of d.c. motor and calculate the brake torque. The tyre/road friction coefficient estimator is designed to obtain the optimal rear slip ratio timely. The simulation model of iEPB system is initially constructed in AMESim and the vehicle model is built in MATLAB/Simulink, and the complete system is co-simulated by these two software simultaneously with different road conditions. Simulation results show that the proposed observer and estimator are feasible. This study may provide a useful method to realize rear slip ratio control so that the safety and stability of vehicle could be improved significantly in specified condition

EmambaIR: Efficient Visual State Space Model for Event-guided Image Reconstruction

Recent event-based image reconstruction methods predominantly rely on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Vision Transformers (ViTs) to process complementary event information. However, these architectures face fundamental limitations: CNNs often fail to capture global feature correlations, whereas ViTs incur quadratic computational complexity (e.g., $O(n^2)$), hindering their application in high-resolution scenarios. To address these bottlenecks, we introduce EmambaIR, an Efficient visual State Space Model designed for image reconstruction using spatially sparse and temporally continuous event streams. Our framework introduces two key components: the cross-modal Top-k Sparse Attention Module (TSAM) and the Gated State-Space Module (GSSM). TSAM efficiently performs pixel-level top-k sparse attention to guide cross-modal interactions, yielding rich yet sparse fusion features. Subsequently, GSSM utilizes a nonlinear gated unit to enhance the temporal representation of vanilla linear-complexity ($O(n)$) SSMs, effectively capturing global contextual dependencies without the typical computational overhead. Extensive experiments on six datasets across three diverse image reconstruction tasks - motion deblurring, deraining, and High Dynamic Range (HDR) enhancement - demonstrate that EmambaIR significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods while offering substantial reductions in memory consumption and computational cost. Joint Input and Output Coordination for Class-Incremental Learning

Incremental learning is nontrivial due to severe catastrophic forgetting. Although storing a small amount of data on old tasks during incremental learning is a feasible solution, current strategies still do not 1) adequately address the class bias problem, and 2) alleviate the mutual interference between new and old tasks, and 3) consider the problem of class bias within tasks. This motivates us to propose a joint input and output coordination (JIOC) mechanism to address these issues. This mechanism assigns different weights to different categories of data according to the gradient of the output score, and uses knowledge distillation (KD) to reduce the mutual interference between the outputs of old and new tasks. The proposed mechanism is general and flexible, and can be incorporated into different incremental learning approaches that use memory storage. Extensive experiments show that our mechanism can significantly improve their performance.

Uncertainty Injection: A Deep Learning Method for Robust Optimization

This paper proposes a paradigm of uncertainty injection for training deep learning model to solve robust optimization problems. The majority of existing studies on deep learning focus on the model learning capability, while assuming the quality and accuracy of the inputs data can be guaranteed. However, in realistic applications of deep learning for solving optimization problems, the accuracy of inputs, which are the problem parameters in this case, plays a large role. This is because, in many situations, it is often costly or sometime impossible to obtain the problem parameters accurately, and correspondingly, it is highly desirable to develop learning algorithms that can account for the uncertainties in the input and produce solutions that are robust against these uncertainties. This paper presents a novel uncertainty injection scheme for training machine learning models that are capable of implicitly accounting for the uncertainties and producing statistically robust solutions. We further identify the wireless communications as an application field where uncertainties are prevalent in problem parameters such as the channel coefficients. We show the effectiveness of the proposed training scheme in two applications: the robust power loading for multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) downlink transmissions; and the robust power control for device-to-device (D2D) networks.

AffordVLA: Injecting Affordance Representations into Vision-Language-Action Models via Implicit Feature Alignment

Recent advances in Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models have shown strong potential for general-purpose robotic manipulation. However, the visual representations of most VLA models are often dominated by global object appearance and struggle to focus on task-relevant functional interaction regions, which limits their robustness in unstructured environments. Existing affordance-based methods typically rely on explicit mask injection or external perception modules, requiring additional annotations while introducing cascading perception errors and inference overhead. To address these limitations, we propose AffordVLA, an affordance-enhanced VLA framework that internalizes manipulation-centric affordance perception into VLA visual representations through implicit representation alignment. Specifically, we construct a zero-shot affordance teacher to extract task-conditioned affordance visual representations from RGB observations and language instructions. AffordVLA aligns the intermediate visual representations of the VLA with the affordance visual representations extracted by the teacher, thereby implicitly injecting manipulation-centric affordance perception into VLA visual representations and improving action accuracy. Extensive simulation and real-world experiments demonstrate that AffordVLA and its affordance teacher achieve state-of-the-art performance and outperform strong baselines. Ablation analyses show that AffordVLA effectively reshapes VLA visual representations while preserving inference efficiency, leading to improved manipulation success rates and training efficiency.

Reinforcement Learning with Non-Cumulative Objective

In reinforcement learning, the objective is almost always defined as a \emph{cumulative} function over the rewards along the process. However, there are many optimal control and reinforcement learning problems in various application fields, especially in communications and networking, where the objectives are not naturally expressed as summations of the rewards. In this paper, we recognize the prevalence of non-cumulative objectives in various problems, and propose a modification to existing algorithms for optimizing such objectives. Specifically, we dive into the fundamental building block for many optimal control and reinforcement learning algorithms: the Bellman optimality equation. To optimize a non-cumulative objective, we replace the original summation operation in the Bellman update rule with a generalized operation corresponding to the objective. Furthermore, we provide sufficient conditions on the form of the generalized operation as well as assumptions on the Markov decision process under which the globally optimal convergence of the generalized Bellman updates can be guaranteed. We demonstrate the idea experimentally with the bottleneck objective, i.e., the objectives determined by the minimum reward along the process, on classical optimal control and reinforcement learning tasks, as well as on two network routing problems on maximizing the flow rates.

TwinSegNet: A Digital Twin-Enabled Federated Learning Framework for Brain Tumor Analysis

Brain tumor segmentation is critical in diagnosis and treatment planning for the disease. Yet, current deep learning methods rely on centralized data collection, which raises privacy concerns and limits generalization across diverse institutions. In this paper, we propose TwinSegNet, which is a privacy-preserving federated learning framework that integrates a hybrid ViT-UNet model with personalized digital twins for accurate and real-time brain tumor segmentation. Our architecture combines convolutional encoders with Vision Transformer bottlenecks to capture local and global context. Each institution fine-tunes the global model of private data to form its digital twin. Evaluated on nine heterogeneous MRI datasets, including BraTS 2019-2021 and custom tumor collections, TwinSegNet achieves high Dice scores (up to 0.90%) and sensitivity/specificity exceeding 90%, demonstrating robustness across non-independent and identically distributed (IID) client distributions. Comparative results against centralized models such as TumorVisNet highlight TwinSegNet's effectiveness in preserving privacy without sacrificing performance. Our approach enables scalable, personalized segmentation for multi-institutional clinical settings while adhering to strict data confidentiality requirements.

Adaptive Dropout: Unleashing Dropout across Layers for Generalizable Image Super-Resolution

Blind Super-Resolution (blind SR) aims to enhance the model's generalization ability with unknown degradation, yet it still encounters severe overfitting issues. Some previous methods inspired by dropout, which enhances generalization by regularizing features, have shown promising results in blind SR. Nevertheless, these methods focus solely on regularizing features before the final layer and overlook the need for generalization in features at intermediate layers. Without explicit regularization of features at intermediate layers, the blind SR network struggles to obtain well-generalized feature representations. However, the key challenge is that directly applying dropout to intermediate layers leads to a significant performance drop, which we attribute to the inconsistency in training-testing and across layers it introduced. Therefore, we propose Adaptive Dropout, a new regularization method for blind SR models, which mitigates the inconsistency and facilitates application across intermediate layers of networks. Specifically, for training-testing inconsistency, we re-design the form of dropout and integrate the features before and after dropout adaptively. For inconsistency in generalization requirements across different layers, we innovatively design an adaptive training strategy to strengthen feature propagation by layer-wise annealing. Experimental results show that our method outperforms all past regularization methods on both synthetic and real-world benchmark datasets, also highly effective in other image restoration tasks. Dual-Context Aggregation for Universal Image Matting

Natural image matting aims to estimate the alpha matte of the foreground from a given image. Various approaches have been explored to address this problem, such as interactive matting methods that use guidance such as click or trimap, and automatic matting methods tailored to specific objects. However, existing matting methods are designed for specific objects or guidance, neglecting the common requirement of aggregating global and local contexts in image matting. As a result, these methods often encounter challenges in accurately identifying the foreground and generating precise boundaries, which limits their effectiveness in unforeseen scenarios. In this paper, we propose a simple and universal matting framework, named Dual-Context Aggregation Matting (DCAM), which enables robust image matting with arbitrary guidance or without guidance. Specifically, DCAM first adopts a semantic backbone network to extract low-level features and context features from the input image and guidance. Then, we introduce a dual-context aggregation network that incorporates global object aggregators and local appearance aggregators to iteratively refine the extracted context features. By performing both global contour segmentation and local boundary refinement, DCAM exhibits robustness to diverse types of guidance and objects. Finally, we adopt a matting decoder network to fuse the low-level features and the refined context features for alpha matte estimation. Experimental results on five matting datasets demonstrate that the proposed DCAM outperforms state-of-the-art matting methods in both automatic matting and interactive matting tasks, which highlights the strong universality and high performance of DCAM. SID: Sliding into Distribution for Robust Few-Demonstration Manipulation

Generalizing robotic manipulation across object poses, viewpoints, and dynamic disturbances is difficult, especially with only a few demonstrations. End-to-end visuomotor policies are expressive but data-hungry, while planning and optimization satisfy explicit constraints but do not directly capture the interaction strategies demonstrated by humans. We propose Sliding into Distribution (SID), a structured framework that learns an object-centric motion field from canonicalized demonstrations to iteratively slide the system toward the demonstrated manifold and into the reliable operating region of a lightweight egocentric execution policy, mitigating out-of-distribution (OOD) execution. The motion field provides large corrective motions when far from the demonstration manifold and naturally vanishes near convergence, enabling robust reaching under substantial pose and viewpoint shifts. Within the reached regime, an egocentric policy trained with conditioned flow matching performs task-specific manipulation, supported by kinematically consistent point-cloud reprojection augmentation that preserves action-observation consistency. Across six real-world tasks, SID achieves approximately 90% success under OOD initializations with only two demonstrations, with under a 10% drop under distractors and external disturbances. Overall, SID provides a new paradigm for few-shot manipulation: explicitly managing distribution shift via online distribution recovery.

Meta-Cognitive Reinforcement Learning with Self-Doubt and Recovery

Robust reinforcement learning methods typically focus on suppressing unreliable experiences or corrupted rewards, but they lack the ability to reason about the reliability of their own learning process. As a result, such methods often either overreact to noise by becoming overly conservative or fail catastrophically when uncertainty accumulates. In this work, we propose a meta-cognitive reinforcement learning framework that enables an agent to assess, regulate, and recover its learning behavior based on internally estimated reliability signals. The proposed method introduces a meta-trust variable driven by Value Prediction Error Stability (VPES), which modulates learning dynamics via fail-safe regulation and gradual trust recovery. Experiments on continuous-control benchmarks with reward corruption demonstrate that recovery-enabled meta-cognitive control achieves higher average returns and significantly reduces late-stage training failures compared to strong robustness baselines.

RAW Image Reconstruction from RGB on Smartphones. NTIRE 2025 Challenge Report

Numerous low-level vision tasks operate in the RAW domain due to its linear properties, bit depth, and sensor designs. Despite this, RAW image datasets are scarce and more expensive to collect than the already large and public sRGB datasets. For this reason, many approaches try to generate realistic RAW images using sensor information and sRGB images. This paper covers the second challenge on RAW Reconstruction from sRGB (Reverse ISP). We aim to recover RAW sensor images from smartphones given the corresponding sRGB images without metadata and, by doing this, ``reverse" the ISP transformation. Over 150 participants joined this NTIRE 2025 challenge and submitted efficient models. The proposed methods and benchmark establish the state-of-the-art for generating realistic RAW data.

NTIRE 2025 Challenge on Event-Based Image Deblurring: Methods and Results

This paper presents an overview of NTIRE 2025 the First Challenge on Event-Based Image Deblurring, detailing the proposed methodologies and corresponding results. The primary goal of the challenge is to design an event-based method that achieves high-quality image deblurring, with performance quantitatively assessed using Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR). Notably, there are no restrictions on computational complexity or model size. The task focuses on leveraging both events and images as inputs for single-image deblurring. A total of 199 participants registered, among whom 15 teams successfully submitted valid results, offering valuable insights into the current state of event-based image deblurring. We anticipate that this challenge will drive further advancements in event-based vision research.

Localization with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface: An Active Sensing Approach

This paper addresses an uplink localization problem in which a base station (BS) aims to locate a remote user with the help of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). We propose a strategy in which the user transmits pilots sequentially and the BS adaptively adjusts the sensing vectors, including the BS beamforming vector and multiple RIS reflection coefficients based on the observations already made, to eventually produce an estimated user position. This is a challenging active sensing problem for which finding an optimal solution involves searching through a complicated functional space whose dimension increases with the number of measurements. We show that the long short-term memory (LSTM) network can be used to exploit the latent temporal correlation between measurements to automatically construct scalable state vectors. Subsequently, the state vector is mapped to the sensing vectors for the next time frame via a deep neural network (DNN). A final DNN is used to map the state vector to the estimated user position. Numerical result illustrates the advantage of the active sensing design as compared to non-active sensing methods. The proposed solution produces interpretable results and is generalizable in the number of sensing stages. Remarkably, we show that a network with one BS and multiple RISs can outperform a comparable setting with multiple BSs.

What Kind of Visual Tokens Do We Need? Training-free Visual Token Pruning for Multi-modal Large Language Models from the Perspective of Graph

Recent Multimodal Large Language Models(MLLMs) often use a large number of visual tokens to compensate their visual shortcoming, leading to excessive computation and obvious visual redundancy. In this paper, we investigate what kind of visual tokens are needed for MLLMs, and reveal that both foreground and background tokens are critical for MLLMs given the varying difficulties of examples. Based on this observation, we propose a graph-based method towards training-free visual token pruning, termed G-Prune.In particular, G-Prune regards visual tokens as nodes, and construct their connections based on their semantic similarities. Afterwards, the information flow is propagated via weighted links, and the most important tokens after iterations are kept for MLLMs, which can be front or background.To validate G-Prune, we apply it to a recent MLLM called LLaVA-NeXT, and conduct extensive experiments on a set of benchmarks.The experiment results show that G-Prune can greatly reduce computation overhead while retaining high performance on both coarse- and fine-grained tasks. For instance, G-Prune can reduce 63.57\% FLOPs of LLaVA-NeXT on VQA2.0 and TextVQA with only 0.95\% and 2.34\% accuracy drops, respectively.

Rate-Distortion-Perception Tradeoff Based on the Conditional-Distribution Perception Measure

This paper studies the rate-distortion-perception (RDP) tradeoff for a memoryless source model in the asymptotic limit of large block-lengths. The perception measure is based on a divergence between the distributions of the source and reconstruction sequences \emph{conditioned} on the encoder output, first proposed by Mentzer et al. We consider the case when there is no shared randomness between the encoder and the decoder and derive a single-letter characterization of the RDP function for the case of discrete memoryless sources. This is in contrast to the marginal-distribution metric case (introduced by Blau and Michaeli), whose RDP characterization remains open when there is no shared randomness. The achievability scheme is based on lossy source coding with a posterior reference map. For the case of continuous valued sources under the squared error distortion measure and the squared quadratic Wasserstein perception measure, we also derive a single-letter characterization and show that the decoder can be restricted to a noise-adding mechanism. Interestingly, the RDP function characterized for the case of zero perception loss coincides with that of the marginal metric, and further zero perception loss can be achieved with a 3-dB penalty in minimum distortion. Finally we specialize to the case of Gaussian sources, and derive the RDP function for Gaussian vector case and propose a reverse water-filling type solution. We also partially characterize the RDP function for a mixture of Gaussian vector sources.

Soft-Prompting with Graph-of-Thought for Multi-modal Representation Learning

The chain-of-thought technique has been received well in multi-modal tasks. It is a step-by-step linear reasoning process that adjusts the length of the chain to improve the performance of generated prompts. However, human thought processes are predominantly non-linear, as they encompass multiple aspects simultaneously and employ dynamic adjustment and updating mechanisms. Therefore, we propose a novel Aggregation-Graph-of-Thought (AGoT) mechanism for soft-prompt tuning in multi-modal representation learning. The proposed AGoT models the human thought process not only as a chain but also models each step as a reasoning aggregation graph to cope with the overlooked multiple aspects of thinking in single-step reasoning. This turns the entire reasoning process into prompt aggregation and prompt flow operations. Experiments show that our multi-modal model enhanced with AGoT soft-prompting achieves good results in several tasks such as text-image retrieval, visual question answering, and image recognition. In addition, we demonstrate that it has good domain generalization performance due to better reasoning.

MIPI 2024 Challenge on Demosaic for HybridEVS Camera: Methods and Results

The increasing demand for computational photography and imaging on mobile platforms has led to the widespread development and integration of advanced image sensors with novel algorithms in camera systems. However, the scarcity of high-quality data for research and the rare opportunity for in-depth exchange of views from industry and academia constrain the development of mobile intelligent photography and imaging (MIPI). Building on the achievements of the previous MIPI Workshops held at ECCV 2022 and CVPR 2023, we introduce our third MIPI challenge including three tracks focusing on novel image sensors and imaging algorithms. In this paper, we summarize and review the Nighttime Flare Removal track on MIPI 2024. In total, 170 participants were successfully registered, and 14 teams submitted results in the final testing phase. The developed solutions in this challenge achieved state-of-the-art performance on Nighttime Flare Removal. Cross-Modal Adapter: Parameter-Efficient Transfer Learning Approach for Vision-Language Models

Adapter-based parameter-efficient transfer learning has achieved exciting results in vision-language models. Traditional adapter methods often require training or fine-tuning, facing challenges such as insufficient samples or resource limitations. While some methods overcome the need for training by leveraging image modality cache and retrieval, they overlook the text modality's importance and cross-modal cues for the efficient adaptation of parameters in visual-language models. This work introduces a cross-modal parameter-efficient approach named XMAdapter. XMAdapter establishes cache models for both text and image modalities. It then leverages retrieval through visual-language bimodal information to gather clues for inference. By dynamically adjusting the affinity ratio, it achieves cross-modal fusion, decoupling different modal similarities to assess their respective contributions. Additionally, it explores hard samples based on differences in cross-modal affinity and enhances model performance through adaptive adjustment of sample learning intensity. Extensive experimental results on benchmark datasets demonstrate that XMAdapter outperforms previous adapter-based methods significantly regarding accuracy, generalization, and efficiency.

Transfer Learning with Reconstruction Loss

In most applications of utilizing neural networks for mathematical optimization, a dedicated model is trained for each specific optimization objective. However, in many scenarios, several distinct yet correlated objectives or tasks often need to be optimized on the same set of problem inputs. Instead of independently training a different neural network for each problem separately, it would be more efficient to exploit the correlations between these objectives and to train multiple neural network models with shared model parameters and feature representations. To achieve this, this paper first establishes the concept of common information: the shared knowledge required for solving the correlated tasks, then proposes a novel approach for model training by adding into the model an additional reconstruction stage associated with a new reconstruction loss. This loss is for reconstructing the common information starting from a selected hidden layer in the model. The proposed approach encourages the learned features to be general and transferable, and therefore can be readily used for efficient transfer learning. For numerical simulations, three applications are studied: transfer learning on classifying MNIST handwritten digits, the device-to-device wireless network power allocation, and the multiple-input-single-output network downlink beamforming and localization. Simulation results suggest that the proposed approach is highly efficient in data and model complexity, is resilient to over-fitting, and has competitive performances.

Pursuing Temporal-Consistent Video Virtual Try-On via Dynamic Pose Interaction

Video virtual try-on aims to seamlessly dress a subject in a video with a specific garment. The primary challenge involves preserving the visual authenticity of the garment while dynamically adapting to the pose and physique of the subject. While existing methods have predominantly focused on image-based virtual try-on, extending these techniques directly to videos often results in temporal inconsistencies. Most current video virtual try-on approaches alleviate this challenge by incorporating temporal modules, yet still overlook the critical spatiotemporal pose interactions between human and garment. Effective pose interactions in videos should not only consider spatial alignment between human and garment poses in each frame but also account for the temporal dynamics of human poses throughout the entire video. With such motivation, we propose a new framework, namely Dynamic Pose Interaction Diffusion Models (DPIDM), to leverage diffusion models to delve into dynamic pose interactions for video virtual try-on. Technically, DPIDM introduces a skeleton-based pose adapter to integrate synchronized human and garment poses into the denoising network. A hierarchical attention module is then exquisitely designed to model intra-frame human-garment pose interactions and long-term human pose dynamics across frames through pose-aware spatial and temporal attention mechanisms. Moreover, DPIDM capitalizes on a temporal regularized attention loss between consecutive frames to enhance temporal consistency. Extensive experiments conducted on VITON-HD, VVT and ViViD datasets demonstrate the superiority of our DPIDM against the baseline methods. Notably, DPIDM achieves VFID score of 0.506 on VVT dataset, leading to 60.5% improvement over the state-of-the-art GPD-VVTO approach.

MTGA: Multi-View Temporal Granularity Aligned Aggregation for Event-Based Lip-Reading

Lip-reading is to utilize the visual information of the speaker's lip movements to recognize words and sentences. Existing event-based lip-reading solutions integrate different frame rate branches to learn spatio-temporal features of varying granularities. However, aggregating events into event frames inevitably leads to the loss of fine-grained temporal information within frames. To remedy this drawback, we propose a novel framework termed Multi-view Temporal Granularity aligned Aggregation (MTGA). Specifically, we first present a novel event representation method, namely time-segmented voxel graph list, where the most significant local voxels are temporally connected into a graph list. Then we design a spatio-temporal fusion module based on temporal granularity alignment, where the global spatial features extracted from event frames, together with the local relative spatial and temporal features contained in voxel graph list are effectively aligned and integrated. Finally, we design a temporal aggregation module that incorporates positional encoding, which enables the capture of local absolute spatial and global temporal information. Experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms both the event-based and video-based lip-reading counterparts.

Levenshtein Distance Embedding with Poisson Regression for DNA Storage

Efficient computation or approximation of Levenshtein distance, a widely-used metric for evaluating sequence similarity, has attracted significant attention with the emergence of DNA storage and other biological applications. Sequence embedding, which maps Levenshtein distance to a conventional distance between embedding vectors, has emerged as a promising solution. In this paper, a novel neural network-based sequence embedding technique using Poisson regression is proposed. We first provide a theoretical analysis of the impact of embedding dimension on model performance and present a criterion for selecting an appropriate embedding dimension. Under this embedding dimension, the Poisson regression is introduced by assuming the Levenshtein distance between sequences of fixed length following a Poisson distribution, which naturally aligns with the definition of Levenshtein distance. Moreover, from the perspective of the distribution of embedding distances, Poisson regression approximates the negative log likelihood of the chi-squared distribution and offers advancements in removing the skewness. Through comprehensive experiments on real DNA storage data, we demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method compared to state-of-the-art approaches.

Learning Beamforming Codebooks for Active Sensing with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

This paper explores the design of beamforming codebooks for the base station (BS) and for the reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in an active sensing scheme for uplink localization, in which the mobile user transmits a sequence of pilots to the BS through reflection at the RISs, and the BS and the RISs are adaptively configured by carefully choosing BS beamforming codeword and RIS codewords from their respective codebooks in a sequential manner to progressively focus onto the user. Most existing codebook designs for RIS are not tailored for active sensing, by which we mean the choice of the next codeword should depend on the measurements made so far, and the sequence of codewords should dynamically focus reflection toward the user. Moreover, most existing codeword selection methods rely on exhaustive search in beam training to identify the codeword with the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), thus incurring substantial pilot overhead as the size of the codebook scales. This paper proposes a learning-based approach for codebook construction and for codeword selection for active sensing. The proposed learning approach aims to locate a target in the service area by recursively selecting a sequence of BS beamforming codewords and RIS codewords from the respective codebooks as more measurements become available without exhaustive beam training. The codebook design and the codeword selection fuse key ideas from the vector quantized variational autoencoder (VQ-VAE) and the long short-term memory (LSTM) network to learn respectively the discrete function space of the codebook and the temporal dependencies between measurements.

WaterWave: Bridging Underwater Image Enhancement into Video Streams via Wavelet-based Temporal Consistency Field

Underwater video pairs are fairly difficult to obtain due to the complex underwater imaging. In this case, most existing video underwater enhancement methods are performed by directly applying the single-image enhancement model frame by frame, but a natural issue is lacking temporal consistency. To relieve the problem, we rethink the temporal manifold inherent in natural videos and observe a temporal consistency prior in dynamic scenes from the local temporal frequency perspective. Building upon the specific prior and no paired-data condition, we propose an implicit representation manner for enhanced video signals, which is conducted in the wavelet-based temporal consistency field, WaterWave. Specifically, under the constraints of the prior, we progressively filter and attenuate the inconsistent components while preserving motion details and scenes, achieving a natural-flowing video. Furthermore, to represent temporal frequency bands more accurately, an underwater flow correction module is designed to rectify estimated flows considering the transmission in underwater scenes. Extensive experiments demonstrate that WaterWave significantly enhances the quality of videos generated using single-image underwater enhancements. Additionally, our method demonstrates high potential in downstream underwater tracking tasks, such as UOSTrack and MAT, outperforming the original video by a large margin, i.e., 19.7% and 9.7% on precise respectively.

On Self-Adaptive Perception Loss Function for Sequential Lossy Compression

We consider causal, low-latency, sequential lossy compression, with mean squared-error (MSE) as the distortion loss, and a perception loss function (PLF) to enhance the realism of reconstructions. As the main contribution, we propose and analyze a new PLF that considers the joint distribution between the current source frame and the previous reconstructions. We establish the theoretical rate-distortion-perception function for first-order Markov sources and analyze the Gaussian model in detail. From a qualitative perspective, the proposed metric can simultaneously avoid the error-permanence phenomenon and also better exploit the temporal correlation between high-quality reconstructions. The proposed metric is referred to as self-adaptive perception loss function (PLF-SA), as its behavior adapts to the quality of reconstructed frames. We provide a detailed comparison of the proposed perception loss function with previous approaches through both information theoretic analysis as well as experiments involving moving MNIST and UVG datasets.

Technique Report of CVPR 2024 PBDL Challenges

The intersection of physics-based vision and deep learning presents an exciting frontier for advancing computer vision technologies. By leveraging the principles of physics to inform and enhance deep learning models, we can develop more robust and accurate vision systems. Physics-based vision aims to invert the processes to recover scene properties such as shape, reflectance, light distribution, and medium properties from images. In recent years, deep learning has shown promising improvements for various vision tasks, and when combined with physics-based vision, these approaches can enhance the robustness and accuracy of vision systems. This technical report summarizes the outcomes of the Physics-Based Vision Meets Deep Learning (PBDL) 2024 challenge, held in CVPR 2024 workshop. The challenge consisted of eight tracks, focusing on Low-Light Enhancement and Detection as well as High Dynamic Range (HDR) Imaging. This report details the objectives, methodologies, and results of each track, highlighting the top-performing solutions and their innovative approaches.

DSDRNet: Disentangling Representation and Reconstruct Network for Domain Generalization

Domain generalization faces challenges due to the distribution shift between training and testing sets, and the presence of unseen target domains. Common solutions include domain alignment, meta-learning, data augmentation, or ensemble learning, all of which rely on domain labels or domain adversarial techniques. In this paper, we propose a Dual-Stream Separation and Reconstruction Network, dubbed DSDRNet. It is a disentanglement-reconstruction approach that integrates features of both inter-instance and intra-instance through dual-stream fusion. The method introduces novel supervised signals by combining inter-instance semantic distance and intra-instance similarity. Incorporating Adaptive Instance Normalization (AdaIN) into a two-stage cyclic reconstruction process enhances self-disentangled reconstruction signals to facilitate model convergence. Extensive experiments on four benchmark datasets demonstrate that DSDRNet outperforms other popular methods in terms of domain generalization capabilities.

Parameter and Computation Efficient Transfer Learning for Vision-Language Pre-trained Models

With ever increasing parameters and computation, vision-language pre-trained (VLP) models exhibit prohibitive expenditure in downstream task adaption. Recent endeavors mainly focus on parameter efficient transfer learning (PETL) for VLP models by only updating a small number of parameters. However, excessive computational overhead still plagues the application of VLPs. In this paper, we aim at parameter and computation efficient transfer learning (PCETL) for VLP models. In particular, PCETL not only needs to limit the number of trainable parameters in VLP models, but also to reduce the computational redundancy during inference, thus enabling a more efficient transfer. To approach this target, we propose a novel dynamic architecture skipping (DAS) approach towards effective PCETL. Instead of directly optimizing the intrinsic architectures of VLP models, DAS first observes the significances of their modules to downstream tasks via a reinforcement learning (RL) based process, and then skips the redundant ones with lightweight networks, i.e., adapters, according to the obtained rewards. In this case, the VLP model can well maintain the scale of trainable parameters while speeding up its inference on downstream tasks. To validate DAS, we apply it to two representative VLP models, namely ViLT and METER, and conduct extensive experiments on a bunch of VL tasks. The experimental results not only show the great advantages of DAS in reducing computational complexity, e.g. -11.97% FLOPs of METER on VQA2.0, but also confirm its competitiveness against existing PETL methods in terms of parameter scale and performance. On the Choice of Perception Loss Function for Learned Video Compression

We study causal, low-latency, sequential video compression when the output is subjected to both a mean squared-error (MSE) distortion loss as well as a perception loss to target realism. Motivated by prior approaches, we consider two different perception loss functions (PLFs). The first, PLF-JD, considers the joint distribution (JD) of all the video frames up to the current one, while the second metric, PLF-FMD, considers the framewise marginal distributions (FMD) between the source and reconstruction. Using information theoretic analysis and deep-learning based experiments, we demonstrate that the choice of PLF can have a significant effect on the reconstruction, especially at low-bit rates. In particular, while the reconstruction based on PLF-JD can better preserve the temporal correlation across frames, it also imposes a significant penalty in distortion compared to PLF-FMD and further makes it more difficult to recover from errors made in the earlier output frames. Although the choice of PLF decisively affects reconstruction quality, we also demonstrate that it may not be essential to commit to a particular PLF during encoding and the choice of PLF can be delegated to the decoder. In particular, encoded representations generated by training a system to minimize the MSE (without requiring either PLF) can be {\em near universal} and can generate close to optimal reconstructions for either choice of PLF at the decoder. We validate our results using (one-shot) information-theoretic analysis, detailed study of the rate-distortion-perception tradeoff of the Gauss-Markov source model as well as deep-learning based experiments on moving MNIST and KTH datasets.

Active Sensing for Communications by Learning

This paper proposes a deep learning approach to a class of active sensing problems in wireless communications in which an agent sequentially interacts with an environment over a predetermined number of time frames to gather information in order to perform a sensing or actuation task for maximizing some utility function. In such an active learning setting, the agent needs to design an adaptive sensing strategy sequentially based on the observations made so far. To tackle such a challenging problem in which the dimension of historical observations increases over time, we propose to use a long short-term memory (LSTM) network to exploit the temporal correlations in the sequence of observations and to map each observation to a fixed-size state information vector. We then use a deep neural network (DNN) to map the LSTM state at each time frame to the design of the next measurement step. Finally, we employ another DNN to map the final LSTM state to the desired solution. We investigate the performance of the proposed framework for adaptive channel sensing problems in wireless communications. In particular, we consider the adaptive beamforming problem for mmWave beam alignment and the adaptive reconfigurable intelligent surface sensing problem for reflection alignment. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed deep active sensing strategy outperforms the existing adaptive or nonadaptive sensing schemes.

SSDL: Self-Supervised Dictionary Learning

The label-embedded dictionary learning (DL) algorithms generate influential dictionaries by introducing discriminative information. However, there exists a limitation: All the label-embedded DL methods rely on the labels due that this way merely achieves ideal performances in supervised learning. While in semi-supervised and unsupervised learning, it is no longer sufficient to be effective. Inspired by the concept of self-supervised learning (e.g., setting the pretext task to generate a universal model for the downstream task), we propose a Self-Supervised Dictionary Learning (SSDL) framework to address this challenge. Specifically, we first design a $p$-Laplacian Attention Hypergraph Learning (pAHL) block as the pretext task to generate pseudo soft labels for DL. Then, we adopt the pseudo labels to train a dictionary from a primary label-embedded DL method. We evaluate our SSDL on two human activity recognition datasets. The comparison results with other state-of-the-art methods have demonstrated the efficiency of SSDL.

What Makes an Effective Scalarising Function for Multi-Objective Bayesian Optimisation?

Performing multi-objective Bayesian optimisation by scalarising the objectives avoids the computation of expensive multi-dimensional integral-based acquisition functions, instead of allowing one-dimensional standard acquisition functions\textemdash such as Expected Improvement\textemdash to be applied. Here, two infill criteria based on hypervolume improvement\textemdash one recently introduced and one novel\textemdash are compared with the multi-surrogate Expected Hypervolume Improvement. The reasons for the disparities in these methods' effectiveness in maximising the hypervolume of the acquired Pareto Front are investigated. In addition, the effect of the surrogate model mean function on exploration and exploitation is examined: careful choice of data normalisation is shown to be preferable to the exploration parameter commonly used with the Expected Improvement acquisition function. Finally, the effectiveness of all the methodological improvements defined here is demonstrated on a real-world problem: the optimisation of a wind turbine blade aerofoil for both aerodynamic performance and structural stiffness. With effective scalarisation, Bayesian optimisation finds a large number of new aerofoil shapes that strongly dominate standard designs.

Scalable Deep Reinforcement Learning for Routing and Spectrum Access in Physical Layer

This paper proposes a novel scalable reinforcement learning approach for simultaneous routing and spectrum access in wireless ad-hoc networks. In most previous works on reinforcement learning for network optimization, the network topology is assumed to be fixed, and a different agent is trained for each transmission node -- this limits scalability and generalizability. Further, routing and spectrum access are typically treated as separate tasks. Moreover, the optimization objective is usually a cumulative metric along the route, e.g., number of hops or delay. In this paper, we account for the physical-layer signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in a wireless network and further show that bottleneck objective such as the minimum SINR along the route can also be optimized effectively using reinforcement learning. Specifically, we propose a scalable approach in which a single agent is associated with each flow and makes routing and spectrum access decisions as it moves along the frontier nodes. The agent is trained according to the physical-layer characteristics of the environment using a novel rewarding scheme based on the Monte Carlo estimation of the future bottleneck SINR. It learns to avoid interference by intelligently making joint routing and spectrum allocation decisions based on the geographical location information of the neighbouring nodes.

Modular Action Concept Grounding in Semantic Video Prediction

Recent works in video prediction have mainly focused on passive forecasting and low-level action-conditional prediction, which sidesteps the learning of interaction between agents and objects. We introduce the task of semantic action-conditional video prediction, which uses semantic action labels to describe those interactions and can be regarded as an inverse problem of action recognition. The challenge of this new task primarily lies in how to effectively inform the model of semantic action information. Inspired by the idea of Mixture of Experts, we embody each abstract label by a structured combination of various visual concept learners and propose a novel video prediction model, Modular Action Concept Network (MAC). Our method is evaluated on two newly designed synthetic datasets, CLEVR-Building-Blocks and Sapien-Kitchen, and one real-world dataset called Tower-Creation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that MAC can correctly condition on given instructions and generate corresponding future frames without need of bounding boxes. We further show that the trained model can make out-of-distribution generalization, be quickly adapted to new object categories and exploit its learnt features for object detection, showing the progression towards higher-level cognitive abilities. Products-10K: A Large-scale Product Recognition Dataset

With the rapid development of electronic commerce, the way of shopping has experienced a revolutionary evolution. To fully meet customers' massive and diverse online shopping needs with quick response, the retailing AI system needs to automatically recognize products from images and videos at the stock-keeping unit (SKU) level with high accuracy. However, product recognition is still a challenging task, since many of SKU-level products are fine-grained and visually similar by a rough glimpse. Although there are already some products benchmarks available, these datasets are either too small (limited number of products) or noisy-labeled (lack of human labeling). In this paper, we construct a human-labeled product image dataset named "Products-10K", which contains 10,000 fine-grained SKU-level products frequently bought by online customers in JD.com. Based on our new database, we also introduced several useful tips and tricks for fine-grained product recognition. The products-10K dataset is available via https://products-10k.github.io/.

Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for Adaptive User Association in Dynamic mmWave Networks

Network densification and millimeter-wave technologies are key enablers to fulfill the capacity and data rate requirements of the fifth generation (5G) of mobile networks. In this context, designing low-complexity policies with local observations, yet able to adapt the user association with respect to the global network state and to the network dynamics is a challenge. In fact, the frameworks proposed in literature require continuous access to global network information and to recompute the association when the radio environment changes. With the complexity associated to such an approach, these solutions are not well suited to dense 5G networks. In this paper, we address this issue by designing a scalable and flexible algorithm for user association based on multi-agent reinforcement learning. In this approach, users act as independent agents that, based on their local observations only, learn to autonomously coordinate their actions in order to optimize the network sum-rate. Since there is no direct information exchange among the agents, we also limit the signaling overhead. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is able to adapt to (fast) changes of radio environment, thus providing large sum-rate gain in comparison to state-of-the-art solutions.

Adaptive Semantic-Visual Tree for Hierarchical Embeddings

Merchandise categories inherently form a semantic hierarchy with different levels of concept abstraction, especially for fine-grained categories. This hierarchy encodes rich correlations among various categories across different levels, which can effectively regularize the semantic space and thus make predictions less ambiguous. However, previous studies of fine-grained image retrieval primarily focus on semantic similarities or visual similarities. In a real application, merely using visual similarity may not satisfy the need of consumers to search merchandise with real-life images, e.g., given a red coat as a query image, we might get a red suit in recall results only based on visual similarity since they are visually similar. But the users actually want a coat rather than suit even the coat is with different color or texture attributes. We introduce this new problem based on photoshopping in real practice. That's why semantic information are integrated to regularize the margins to make "semantic" prior to "visual". To solve this new problem, we propose a hierarchical adaptive semantic-visual tree (ASVT) to depict the architecture of merchandise categories, which evaluates semantic similarities between different semantic levels and visual similarities within the same semantic class simultaneously. The semantic information satisfies the demand of consumers for similar merchandise with the query while the visual information optimizes the correlations within the semantic class. At each level, we set different margins based on the semantic hierarchy and incorporate them as prior information to learn a fine-grained feature embedding. To evaluate our framework, we propose a new dataset named JDProduct, with hierarchical labels collected from actual image queries and official merchandise images on an online shopping application. CrevNet: Conditionally Reversible Video Prediction

Applying resolution-preserving blocks is a common practice to maximize information preservation in video prediction, yet their high memory consumption greatly limits their application scenarios. We propose CrevNet, a Conditionally Reversible Network that uses reversible architectures to build a bijective two-way autoencoder and its complementary recurrent predictor. Our model enjoys the theoretically guaranteed property of no information loss during the feature extraction, much lower memory consumption and computational efficiency.

Energy-Efficient Processing and Robust Wireless Cooperative Transmission for Edge Inference

Edge machine learning can deliver low-latency and private artificial intelligent (AI) services for mobile devices by leveraging computation and storage resources at the network edge. This paper presents an energy-efficient edge processing framework to execute deep learning inference tasks at the edge computing nodes whose wireless connections to mobile devices are prone to channel uncertainties. Aimed at minimizing the sum of computation and transmission power consumption with probabilistic quality-of-service (QoS) constraints, we formulate a joint inference tasking and downlink beamforming problem that is characterized by a group sparse objective function. We provide a statistical learning based robust optimization approach to approximate the highly intractable probabilistic-QoS constraints by nonconvex quadratic constraints, which are further reformulated as matrix inequalities with a rank-one constraint via matrix lifting. We design a reweighted power minimization approach by iteratively reweighted $\ell_1$ minimization with difference-of-convex-functions (DC) regularization and updating weights, where the reweighted approach is adopted for enhancing group sparsity whereas the DC regularization is designed for inducing rank-one solutions. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms other state-of-the-art approaches.
