Large Language Model for Qualitative Research -- A Systematic Mapping Study

The exponential growth of text-based data in domains such as healthcare, education, and social sciences has outpaced the capacity of traditional qualitative analysis methods, which are time-intensive and prone to subjectivity. Large Language Models (LLMs), powered by advanced generative AI, have emerged as transformative tools capable of automating and enhancing qualitative analysis. This study systematically maps the literature on the use of LLMs for qualitative research, exploring their application contexts, configurations, methodologies, and evaluation metrics. Findings reveal that LLMs are utilized across diverse fields, demonstrating the potential to automate processes traditionally requiring extensive human input. However, challenges such as reliance on prompt engineering, occasional inaccuracies, and contextual limitations remain significant barriers. This research highlights opportunities for integrating LLMs with human expertise, improving model robustness, and refining evaluation methodologies. By synthesizing trends and identifying research gaps, this study aims to guide future innovations in the application of LLMs for qualitative analysis.

Evaluating Splitting Approaches in the Context of Student Dropout Prediction

The prediction of academic dropout, with the aim of preventing it, is one of the current challenges of higher education institutions. Machine learning techniques are a great ally in this task. However, attention is needed in the way that academic data are used by such methods, so that it reflects the reality of the prediction problem under study and allows achieving good results. In this paper, we study strategies for splitting and using academic data in order to create training and testing sets. Through a conceptual analysis and experiments with data from a public higher education institution, we show that a random proportional data splitting, and even a simple temporal splitting are not suitable for dropout prediction. The study indicates that a temporal splitting combined with a time-based selection of the students' incremental academic histories leads to the best strategy for the problem in question.

Zero-shot hashtag segmentation for multilingual sentiment analysis

Hashtag segmentation, also known as hashtag decomposition, is a common step in preprocessing pipelines for social media datasets. It usually precedes tasks such as sentiment analysis and hate speech detection. For sentiment analysis in medium to low-resourced languages, previous research has demonstrated that a multilingual approach that resorts to machine translation can be competitive or superior to previous approaches to the task. We develop a zero-shot hashtag segmentation framework and demonstrate how it can be used to improve the accuracy of multilingual sentiment analysis pipelines. Our zero-shot framework establishes a new state-of-the-art for hashtag segmentation datasets, surpassing even previous approaches that relied on feature engineering and language models trained on in-domain data.
