Streamline derivative projection-based POD-ROM for convection-dominated flows. Part I : Numerical Analysis

Mejdi Azaïez, Tomás Chacón Rebollo, Samuele Rubino

We introduce improved Reduced Order Models (ROM) for convection-dominated flows. These non-linear closure models are inspired from successful numerical stabilization techniques used in Large Eddy Simulations (LES), such as Local Projection Stabilization (LPS), applied to standard models created by Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) of flows with Galerkin projection. The numerical analysis of the fully Navier-Stokes discretization for the proposed new POD-ROM is presented, by mainly deriving the corresponding error estimates. Also, we suggest an efficient practical implementation of the stabilization term, where the stabilization parameter is approximated by the Discrete Empirical Interpolation Method (DEIM).

Numerical comparisons of finite element stabilized methods for high Reynolds numbers vortex dynamics simulations

Naveed Ahmed, Samuele Rubino

In this paper, we consider up-to-date and classical Finite Element (FE) stabilized methods for time-dependent incompressible flows. All studied methods belong to the Variational MultiScale (VMS) framework. So, different realizations of stabilized FE-VMS methods are compared in high Reynolds numbers vortex dynamics simulations. In particular, a fully Residual-Based (RB)-VMS method is compared with the classical Streamline-Upwind Petrov--Galerkin (SUPG) method together with grad-div stabilization, a standard one-level Local Projection Stabilization (LPS) method, and a recently proposed LPS method by interpolation. These procedures do not make use of the statistical theory of equilibrium turbulence, and no ad-hoc eddy viscosity modeling is required for all methods. Applications to the simulations of high Reynolds numbers flows with vortical structures on relatively coarse grids are showcased, by focusing on two-dimensional plane mixing-layer flows. Both Inf-Sup Stable (ISS) and Equal Order (EO) FE pairs are explored, using a second-order semi-implicit Backward Differentiation Formula (BDF2) in time. Based on the numerical studies, it is concluded that the SUPG method using both ISS and EO FE pairs performs best among all methods. Furthermore, there seems to be no reason to extend SUPG method by the higher order terms of the RB-VMS method.

General Order Virtual Element Approximation for the Smagorinsky turbulence model

Stefano Berrone, Karol L. Cascavita, Enrique Delgado Ávila et al.

In this paper, we investigate a Smagorinsky model in a virtual element framework to simulate convection-dominated Navier-Stokes equations. We conduct a two-dimensional numerical investigation to assess the performance of the general order virtual element approximation in this context. First, we examine numerically the convergence of the method with respect to the meshsize to certify the novel virtual element numerical discretization, which includes, for the first time, a discretization of the Smagorinsky term. Moreover, we present a numerical study of a lid-driven cavity for different Reynolds numbers (up to 10000) and meshes (uniform, anisotropic, and isotropic with hanging nodes). The results highlight the main advantage of using the virtual elements method in this context: the isotropic refinement with hanging nodes enhances the accuracy of the solution compared to the anisotropic mesh, uses fewer degrees of freedom with respect to the uniform mesh, and yields the most stable behavior in terms of convergence of the Newton solver.
