i-Align: an interpretable knowledge graph alignment model

Knowledge graphs (KGs) are becoming essential resources for many downstream applications. However, their incompleteness may limit their potential. Thus, continuous curation is needed to mitigate this problem. One of the strategies to address this problem is KG alignment, i.e., forming a more complete KG by merging two or more KGs. This paper proposes i-Align, an interpretable KG alignment model. Unlike the existing KG alignment models, i-Align provides an explanation for each alignment prediction while maintaining high alignment performance. Experts can use the explanation to check the correctness of the alignment prediction. Thus, the high quality of a KG can be maintained during the curation process (e.g., the merging process of two KGs). To this end, a novel Transformer-based Graph Encoder (Trans-GE) is proposed as a key component of i-Align for aggregating information from entities' neighbors (structures). Trans-GE uses Edge-gated Attention that combines the adjacency matrix and the self-attention matrix to learn a gating mechanism to control the information aggregation from the neighboring entities. It also uses historical embeddings, allowing Trans-GE to be trained over mini-batches, or smaller sub-graphs, to address the scalability issue when encoding a large KG. Another component of i-Align is a Transformer encoder for aggregating entities' attributes. This way, i-Align can generate explanations in the form of a set of the most influential attributes/neighbors based on attention weights. Extensive experiments are conducted to show the power of i-Align. The experiments include several aspects, such as the model's effectiveness for aligning KGs, the quality of the generated explanations, and its practicality for aligning large KGs. The results show the effectiveness of i-Align in these aspects.

Performance-Driven QUBO for Recommender Systems on Quantum Annealers

We propose Counterfactual Analysis Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (CAQUBO) to solve QUBO problems for feature selection in recommender systems. CAQUBO leverages counterfactual analysis to measure the impact of individual features and feature combinations on model performance and employs the measurements to construct the coefficient matrix for a quantum annealer to select the optimal feature combinations for recommender systems, thereby improving their final recommendation performance. By establishing explicit connections between features and the recommendation performance, the proposed approach demonstrates superior performance compared to the state-of-the-art quantum annealing methods. Extensive experiments indicate that integrating quantum computing with counterfactual analysis holds great promise for addressing these challenges.

Applying Value Sensitive Design to Location-Based Services: Designing for Shared Spaces and Local Conditions

Location-Based Services (LBS) such as ride-sharing, accommodation, food delivery, and location-driven social media platforms entangle digital systems with physical spaces, thereby generating impacts that extend beyond users to others who share the same environments. Existing design approaches struggle to address the dual challenge of value tensions that arise in shared physical spaces and the locality-specific contexts in which LBS operate. To respond, we introduce Location-Aware Value Sensitive Design (LA-VSD), a domain-specific adaptation of VSD tailored to the distinctive characteristics of LBS. LA-VSD guides designers through three heuristics to help (1) identify and prioritise stakeholders through local space-sharing scenarios, (2) adapt empirical methods to capture values and tensions in context, and (3) support value-aligned interactions across both digital and physical layers of the service. Through a case study of e-scooter sharing in Melbourne, Australia, we demonstrate how LA-VSD enables more grounded, context-aware, and actionable design of LBS.

Manifesto from Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop 24352 -- Conversational Agents: A Framework for Evaluation (CAFE)

During the workshop, we deeply discussed what CONversational Information ACcess (CONIAC) is and its unique features, proposing a world model abstracting it, and defined the Conversational Agents Framework for Evaluation (CAFE) for the evaluation of CONIAC systems, consisting of six major components: 1) goals of the system's stakeholders, 2) user tasks to be studied in the evaluation, 3) aspects of the users carrying out the tasks, 4) evaluation criteria to be considered, 5) evaluation methodology to be applied, and 6) measures for the quantitative criteria chosen.

Proceedings of the CSCW 2021 Workshop -- Investigating and Mitigating Biases in Crowdsourced Data

This volume contains the position papers presented at CSCW 2021 Workshop - Investigating and Mitigating Biases in Crowdsourced Data, held online on 23rd October 2021, at the 24th ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing (CSCW 2021). The workshop explored how specific crowdsourcing workflows, worker attributes, and work practices contribute to biases in data. The workshop also included discussions on research directions to mitigate labelling biases, particularly in a crowdsourced context, and the implications of such methods for the workers.

Joint Modelling of Cyber Activities and Physical Context to Improve Prediction of Visitor Behaviors

This paper investigates the Cyber-Physical behavior of users in a large indoor shopping mall by leveraging anonymized (opt in) Wi-Fi association and browsing logs recorded by the mall operators. Our analysis shows that many users exhibit a high correlation between their cyber activities and their physical context. To find this correlation, we propose a mechanism to semantically label a physical space with rich categorical information from DBPedia concepts and compute a contextual similarity that represents a user's activities with the mall context. We demonstrate the application of cyber-physical contextual similarity in two situations: user visit intent classification and future location prediction. The experimental results demonstrate that exploitation of contextual similarity significantly improves the accuracy of such applications.

Conversational Search -- A Report from Dagstuhl Seminar 19461

Dagstuhl Seminar 19461 "Conversational Search" was held on 10-15 November 2019. 44~researchers in Information Retrieval and Web Search, Natural Language Processing, Human Computer Interaction, and Dialogue Systems were invited to share the latest development in the area of Conversational Search and discuss its research agenda and future directions. A 5-day program of the seminar consisted of six introductory and background sessions, three visionary talk sessions, one industry talk session, and seven working groups and reporting sessions. The seminar also had three social events during the program. This report provides the executive summary, overview of invited talks, and findings from the seven working groups which cover the definition, evaluation, modelling, explanation, scenarios, applications, and prototype of Conversational Search. The ideas and findings presented in this report should serve as one of the main sources for diverse research programs on Conversational Search.

Common Conversational Community Prototype: Scholarly Conversational Assistant

This paper discusses the potential for creating academic resources (tools, data, and evaluation approaches) to support research in conversational search, by focusing on realistic information needs and conversational interactions. Specifically, we propose to develop and operate a prototype conversational search system for scholarly activities. This Scholarly Conversational Assistant would serve as a useful tool, a means to create datasets, and a platform for running evaluation challenges by groups across the community. This article results from discussions of a working group at Dagstuhl Seminar 19461 on Conversational Search.

Towards a Model for Spoken Conversational Search

Conversation is the natural mode for information exchange in daily life, a spoken conversational interaction for search input and output is a logical format for information seeking. However, the conceptualisation of user-system interactions or information exchange in spoken conversational search (SCS) has not been explored. The first step in conceptualising SCS is to understand the conversational moves used in an audio-only communication channel for search. This paper explores conversational actions for the task of search. We define a qualitative methodology for creating conversational datasets, propose analysis protocols, and develop the SCSdata. Furthermore, we use the SCSdata to create the first annotation schema for SCS: the SCoSAS, enabling us to investigate interactivity in SCS. We further establish that SCS needs to incorporate interactivity and pro-activity to overcome the complexity that the information seeking process in an audio-only channel poses. In summary, this exploratory study unpacks the breadth of SCS. Our results highlight the need for integrating discourse in future SCS models and contributes the advancement in the formalisation of SCS models and the design of SCS systems.

Journalists' information needs, seeking behavior, and its determinants on social media

We describe the results of a qualitative study on journalists' information seeking behavior on social media. Based on interviews with eleven journalists along with a study of a set of university level journalism modules, we determined the categories of information need types that lead journalists to social media. We also determined the ways that social media is exploited as a tool to satisfy information needs and to define influential factors, which impacted on journalists' information seeking behavior. We find that not only is social media used as an information source, but it can also be a supplier of stories found serendipitously. We find seven information need types that expand the types found in previous work. We also find five categories of influential factors that affect the way journalists seek information.

Analyzing Web Behavior in Indoor Retail Spaces

We analyze 18 million rows of Wi-Fi access logs collected over a one year period from over 120,000 anonymized users at an inner-city shopping mall. The anonymized dataset gathered from an opt-in system provides users' approximate physical location, as well as Web browsing and some search history. Such data provides a unique opportunity to analyze the interaction between people's behavior in physical retail spaces and their Web behavior, serving as a proxy to their information needs. We find: (1) the use of Wi-Fi network maps the opening hours of the mall; (2) there is a weekly periodicity in users' visits to the mall; (3) around 60% of registered Wi-Fi users actively browse the Web and around 10% of them use Wi-Fi for accessing Web search engines; (4) people are likely to spend a relatively constant amount of time browsing the Web while their visiting duration may vary; (5) people tend to visit similar mall locations and Web content during their repeated visits to the mall; (6) the physical spatial context has a small but significant influence on the Web content that indoor users browse; (7) accompanying users tend to access resources from the same Web domains.
