When Autoregressive Consistency Hurts Safety Alignment

Safety alignment in large language models (LLMs) is fragile in part because it is often shallow: fine-tuning mainly reshapes the model's behavior near the first few output tokens. We argue that this phenomenon can be understood through autoregressive consistency, the tendency of next-token prediction to preserve and extend the current response trajectory consistently. By analyzing the learning dynamics of safety alignment, we show that autoregressive consistency can concentrate alignment updates on early tokens, offering a mechanistic explanation for shallow safety alignment. The same mechanism also predicts a broader class of attacks on LLMs: attacks that induce harmful continuation states at arbitrary positions in the output trajectory. As a concrete example, we introduce random insertion attack, which inserts a short harmful span into an otherwise safe refusal trajectory and exploits autoregressive consistency to sustain the resulting harmful branch, thereby bypassing safety alignment. Notably, a short harmful span can redirect the generation to be harmful even after a long refusal prefix, highlighting autoregressive consistency as a potential broader failure mechanism. This suggests that safety alignment should also break harmful autoregressive consistency throughout the output trajectory. We therefore propose adversarial safety alignment, an initial framework based on worst-case harmful continuation states, and instantiate it with random worst-insertion training. Overall, our results suggest that autoregressive consistency should be treated as a central consideration in both safety alignment and attack design.

MotionDuet: Dual-Conditioned 3D Human Motion Generation with Video-Regularized Text Learning

3D Human motion generation is pivotal across film, animation, gaming, and embodied intelligence. Traditional 3D motion synthesis relies on costly motion capture, while recent work shows that 2D videos provide rich, temporally coherent observations of human behavior. Existing approaches, however, either map high-level text descriptions to motion or rely solely on video conditioning, leaving a gap between generated dynamics and real-world motion statistics. We introduce MotionDuet, a multimodal framework that aligns motion generation with the distribution of video-derived representations. In this dual-conditioning paradigm, video cues extracted from a pretrained model (e.g., VideoMAE) ground low-level motion dynamics, while textual prompts provide semantic intent. To bridge the distribution gap across modalities, we propose Dual-stream Unified Encoding and Transformation (DUET) and a Distribution-Aware Structural Harmonization (DASH) loss. DUET fuses video-informed cues into the motion latent space via unified encoding and dynamic attention, while DASH aligns motion trajectories with both distributional and structural statistics of video features. An auto-guidance mechanism further balances textual and visual signals by leveraging a weakened copy of the model, enhancing controllability without sacrificing diversity. Extensive experiments demonstrate that MotionDuet generates realistic and controllable human motions, surpassing strong state-of-the-art baselines.

Vessel Segmentation in Medical Imaging Using a Tight-Frame Based Algorithm

Tight-frame, a generalization of orthogonal wavelets, has been used successfully in various problems in image processing, including inpainting, impulse noise removal, super-resolution image restoration, etc. Segmentation is the process of identifying object outlines within images. There are quite a few efficient algorithms for segmentation that depend on the variational approach and the partial differential equation (PDE) modeling. In this paper, we propose to apply the tight-frame approach to automatically identify tube-like structures such as blood vessels in Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) images. Our method iteratively refines a region that encloses the possible boundary or surface of the vessels. In each iteration, we apply the tight-frame algorithm to denoise and smooth the possible boundary and sharpen the region. We prove the convergence of our algorithm. Numerical experiments on real 2D/3D MRA images demonstrate that our method is very efficient with convergence usually within a few iterations, and it outperforms existing PDE and variational methods as it can extract more tubular objects and fine details in the images.

CALM: Culturally Self-Aware Language Models

Cultural awareness in language models is the capacity to understand and adapt to diverse cultural contexts. However, most existing approaches treat culture as static background knowledge, overlooking its dynamic and evolving nature. This limitation reduces their reliability in downstream tasks that demand genuine cultural sensitivity. In this work, we introduce CALM, a novel framework designed to endow language models with cultural self-awareness. CALM disentangles task semantics from explicit cultural concepts and latent cultural signals, shaping them into structured cultural clusters through contrastive learning. These clusters are then aligned via cross-attention to establish fine-grained interactions among related cultural features and are adaptively integrated through a Mixture-of-Experts mechanism along culture-specific dimensions. The resulting unified representation is fused with the model's original knowledge to construct a culturally grounded internal identity state, which is further enhanced through self-prompted reflective learning, enabling continual adaptation and self-correction. Extensive experiments conducted on multiple cross-cultural benchmark datasets demonstrate that CALM consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

IIHT: Medical Report Generation with Image-to-Indicator Hierarchical Transformer

Automated medical report generation has become increasingly important in medical analysis. It can produce computer-aided diagnosis descriptions and thus significantly alleviate the doctors' work. Inspired by the huge success of neural machine translation and image captioning, various deep learning methods have been proposed for medical report generation. However, due to the inherent properties of medical data, including data imbalance and the length and correlation between report sequences, the generated reports by existing methods may exhibit linguistic fluency but lack adequate clinical accuracy. In this work, we propose an image-to-indicator hierarchical transformer (IIHT) framework for medical report generation. It consists of three modules, i.e., a classifier module, an indicator expansion module and a generator module. The classifier module first extracts image features from the input medical images and produces disease-related indicators with their corresponding states. The disease-related indicators are subsequently utilised as input for the indicator expansion module, incorporating the "data-text-data" strategy. The transformer-based generator then leverages these extracted features along with image features as auxiliary information to generate final reports. Furthermore, the proposed IIHT method is feasible for radiologists to modify disease indicators in real-world scenarios and integrate the operations into the indicator expansion module for fluent and accurate medical report generation. Extensive experiments and comparisons with state-of-the-art methods under various evaluation metrics demonstrate the great performance of the proposed method.

SO-Mamba: State-Ownership Mamba for Unrolled MRI Reconstruction

Accelerated MRI reconstruction requires recovering missing details while preserving anatomically coherent structures across large spatial regions. State-space models such as Mamba provide efficient long-range modeling, making them attractive learned regularizers for unrolled reconstruction. However, in a data-consistency-coupled unrolled solver, different stages operate on different reconstruction iterates, where the resident carrier should preserve coherent reconstruction content across stages while stage-dependent non-resident evidence is tied to the current update. Treating these roles uniformly can place persistent resident-carrier evidence and update-dependent non-resident evidence into the same recurrent content route. We therefore propose SO-Mamba, a state-ownership Mamba regularizer that assigns reconstruction evidence within each Mamba stage to recurrent residency, state-interface access, and non-state output correction. SO-Mamba implements this ownership rule with a State-Ownership Router (SOR), which constructs a resident carrier for recurrent content and routes non-resident evidence to affine modulation of the B/C state interfaces and an output correction outlet. The resident carrier supplies the Mamba content route, while the non-resident evidence stream adapts the state interfaces and contributes through the output outlet without entering the recurrent content route. We further introduce a two-level outer-band leakage diagnostic that separates hidden-state storage from readout expression by measuring outer-band energy in the selective-scan state trajectory and the post-scan Mamba readout. Experiments on five public MRI reconstruction benchmarks spanning diverse anatomies, sampling patterns, and coil configurations show that SO-Mamba consistently improves over CNN-, Transformer-, and Mamba-based baselines with competitive computational efficiency.

From Instance Segmentation to 3D Growth Trajectory Reconstruction in Planktonic Foraminifera

Planktonic foraminifera, marine protists characterized by their intricate chambered shells, serve as valuable indicators of past and present environmental conditions. Understanding their chamber growth trajectory provides crucial insights into organismal development and ecological adaptation under changing environments. However, automated tracing of chamber growth from imaging data remains largely unexplored, with existing approaches relying heavily on manual segmentation of each chamber, which is time-consuming and subjective. In this study, we propose an end-to-end pipeline that integrates instance segmentation, a computer vision technique not extensively explored in foraminifera, with a dedicated chamber ordering algorithm to automatically reconstruct three-dimensional growth trajectories from high-resolution computed tomography scans. We quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate multiple instance segmentation methods, each optimized for distinct spatial features of the chambers, and examine their downstream influence on growth-order reconstruction accuracy. Experimental results on expert-annotated datasets demonstrate that the proposed pipeline substantially reduces manual effort while maintaining biologically meaningful accuracy. Although segmentation models exhibit under-segmentation in smaller chambers due to reduced voxel fidelity and subtle inter-chamber connectivity, the chamber-ordering algorithm remains robust, achieving consistent reconstruction of developmental trajectories even under partial segmentation. This work provides the first fully automated and reproducible pipeline for digital foraminiferal growth analysis, establishing a foundation for large-scale, data-driven ecological studies.

Talk2Radar: Bridging Natural Language with 4D mmWave Radar for 3D Referring Expression Comprehension

Embodied perception is essential for intelligent vehicles and robots in interactive environmental understanding. However, these advancements primarily focus on vision, with limited attention given to using 3D modeling sensors, restricting a comprehensive understanding of objects in response to prompts containing qualitative and quantitative queries. Recently, as a promising automotive sensor with affordable cost, 4D millimeter-wave radars provide denser point clouds than conventional radars and perceive both semantic and physical characteristics of objects, thereby enhancing the reliability of perception systems. To foster the development of natural language-driven context understanding in radar scenes for 3D visual grounding, we construct the first dataset, Talk2Radar, which bridges these two modalities for 3D Referring Expression Comprehension (REC). Talk2Radar contains 8,682 referring prompt samples with 20,558 referred objects. Moreover, we propose a novel model, T-RadarNet, for 3D REC on point clouds, achieving State-Of-The-Art (SOTA) performance on the Talk2Radar dataset compared to counterparts. Deformable-FPN and Gated Graph Fusion are meticulously designed for efficient point cloud feature modeling and cross-modal fusion between radar and text features, respectively. GAMED: Knowledge Adaptive Multi-Experts Decoupling for Multimodal Fake News Detection

Multimodal fake news detection often involves modelling heterogeneous data sources, such as vision and language. Existing detection methods typically rely on fusion effectiveness and cross-modal consistency to model the content, complicating understanding how each modality affects prediction accuracy. Additionally, these methods are primarily based on static feature modelling, making it difficult to adapt to the dynamic changes and relationships between different data modalities. This paper develops a significantly novel approach, GAMED, for multimodal modelling, which focuses on generating distinctive and discriminative features through modal decoupling to enhance cross-modal synergies, thereby optimizing overall performance in the detection process. GAMED leverages multiple parallel expert networks to refine features and pre-embed semantic knowledge to improve the experts' ability in information selection and viewpoint sharing. Subsequently, the feature distribution of each modality is adaptively adjusted based on the respective experts' opinions. GAMED also introduces a novel classification technique to dynamically manage contributions from different modalities, while improving the explainability of decisions. Experimental results on the Fakeddit and Yang datasets demonstrate that GAMED performs better than recently developed state-of-the-art models. MOGO: Residual Quantized Hierarchical Causal Transformer for High-Quality and Real-Time 3D Human Motion Generation

Recent advances in transformer-based text-to-motion generation have led to impressive progress in synthesizing high-quality human motion. Nevertheless, jointly achieving high fidelity, streaming capability, real-time responsiveness, and scalability remains a fundamental challenge. In this paper, we propose MOGO (Motion Generation with One-pass), a novel autoregressive framework tailored for efficient and real-time 3D motion generation. MOGO comprises two key components: (1) MoSA-VQ, a motion scale-adaptive residual vector quantization module that hierarchically discretizes motion sequences with learnable scaling to produce compact yet expressive representations; and (2) RQHC-Transformer, a residual quantized hierarchical causal transformer that generates multi-layer motion tokens in a single forward pass, significantly reducing inference latency. To enhance semantic fidelity, we further introduce a text condition alignment mechanism that improves motion decoding under textual control. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets including HumanML3D, KIT-ML, and CMP demonstrate that MOGO achieves competitive or superior generation quality compared to state-of-the-art transformer-based methods, while offering substantial improvements in real-time performance, streaming generation, and generalization under zero-shot settings.

CHASM: Cross-frequency Harmonized Axis-Separable Mixing for Spectral Token Operators

Spectral token mixers based on Fourier transforms provide an efficient way to model global interactions in visual feature maps. Existing designs often either apply filter-wise spectral responses along fixed channel axes, or learn adaptive frequency-indexed channel mixing without explicitly aligning the channel directions used across frequencies. We propose CHASM, a Cross-frequency Harmonized Axis-Separable Mixer, as a structured middle ground. CHASM separates what should be shared from what should remain frequency-specific: all frequencies share a learned channel eigenbasis, while each frequency retains its own positive spectral gains. The shared basis makes channel directions comparable across the spectrum, whereas the positive gains preserve local spectral adaptivity. CHASM applies this structured operator separably along the height and width axes and is used as a drop-in replacement mixer inside existing backbones. We provide a structural characterization of the shared-basis operator family and evaluate CHASM through controlled same-backbone comparisons. Across accelerated MRI reconstruction, undersampled MRI segmentation, and natural-image reconstruction, CHASM consistently improves over same-backbone spectral-mixer baselines. Ablations show that removing the shared-basis constraint weakens performance, and randomizing coherent sampling geometry substantially reduces the gain, supporting cross-frequency harmonization as a useful inductive bias for spectral token operators.

UMo: Unified Sparse Motion Modeling for Real-Time Co-Speech Avatars

Speech-driven gestures and facial animations are fundamental to expressive digital avatars in games, virtual production, and interactive media. However, existing methods are either limited to a single modality for audio motion alignment, failing to fully utilize the potential of massive human motion data, or are constrained by the representation ability and throughput of multimodal models, which makes it difficult to achieve high-quality motion generation or real-time performance. We present UMo, a unified sparse motion modeling architecture for real-time co-speech avatars, which processes text, audio, and motion tokens within a unified formulation. Leveraging a spatially sparse Mixture-of-Experts framework and a temporally sparse, keyframe-centric design, UMo efficiently performs real-time dense reconstruction, enabling temporally coherent and high-fidelity animation generation for both facial expressions and gestures. Furthermore, we implement a multi-stage training strategy with targeted audio augmentation to enhance acoustic diversity and semantic consistency. Consequently, UMo preserves fine-grained speech-motion alignment even under strict latency constraints. Extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluations show that UMo achieves better output quality under low latency and real-time performance constraints, offering a practical solution for high-fidelity real-time co-speech avatars.

AnchorRoute: Human Motion Synthesis with Interval-Routed Sparse Contro

Sparse anchors provide a compact interface for human motion authoring: users specify a few root positions, planar trajectory samples, or body-point targets, while the system synthesizes the full-body motion that completes the under-specified intent. We present AnchorRoute, a sparse-anchor motion synthesis framework that uses anchors as a shared scaffold for both generation and refinement. Before generation, AnchorRoute converts sparse anchors into anchor-condition features and injects the resulting condition memory into a frozen Transition Masked Diffusion prior through AnchorKV and dual-context conditioning. This preserves the generation quality of the pretrained text-to-motion prior while learning sparse spatial control. After generation, the same anchors are evaluated as residuals: their timestamps define refinement intervals, and their residuals determine where correction should be concentrated. RouteSolver then refines the motion by projecting soft-token updates onto anchor-defined piecewise-affine interval bases. This couples generation-time anchor conditioning with residual-routed refinement under one anchor scaffold. AnchorRoute supports root-3D, planar-root, and body-point control within the same formulation. In benchmark evaluations, AnchorRoute outperforms prior sparse-control methods under the sparse keyjoint protocol and consistently improves anchor adherence across control families. The results show that the learned anchor-conditioned generator and RouteSolver refinement are complementary: the generator preserves text-motion quality, while RouteSolver provides a controllable path toward stronger anchor adherence.

Detect Closer Surfaces that can be Seen: New Modeling and Evaluation in Cross-domain 3D Object Detection

The performance of domain adaptation technologies has not yet reached an ideal level in the current 3D object detection field for autonomous driving, which is mainly due to significant differences in the size of vehicles, as well as the environments they operate in when applied across domains. These factors together hinder the effective transfer and application of knowledge learned from specific datasets. Since the existing evaluation metrics are initially designed for evaluation on a single domain by calculating the 2D or 3D overlap between the prediction and ground-truth bounding boxes, they often suffer from the overfitting problem caused by the size differences among datasets. This raises a fundamental question related to the evaluation of the 3D object detection models' cross-domain performance: Do we really need models to maintain excellent performance in their original 3D bounding boxes after being applied across domains? From a practical application perspective, one of our main focuses is actually on preventing collisions between vehicles and other obstacles, especially in cross-domain scenarios where correctly predicting the size of vehicles is much more difficult. In other words, as long as a model can accurately identify the closest surfaces to the ego vehicle, it is sufficient to effectively avoid obstacles. In this paper, we propose two metrics to measure 3D object detection models' ability of detecting the closer surfaces to the sensor on the ego vehicle, which can be used to evaluate their cross-domain performance more comprehensively and reasonably. Furthermore, we propose a refinement head, named EdgeHead, to guide models to focus more on the learnable closer surfaces, which can greatly improve the cross-domain performance of existing models not only under our new metrics, but even also under the original BEV/3D metrics.

EmoPerso: Enhancing Personality Detection with Self-Supervised Emotion-Aware Modelling

Personality detection from text is commonly performed by analysing users' social media posts. However, existing methods heavily rely on large-scale annotated datasets, making it challenging to obtain high-quality personality labels. Moreover, most studies treat emotion and personality as independent variables, overlooking their interactions. In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised framework, EmoPerso, which improves personality detection through emotion-aware modelling. EmoPerso first leverages generative mechanisms for synthetic data augmentation and rich representation learning. It then extracts pseudo-labeled emotion features and jointly optimizes them with personality prediction via multi-task learning. A cross-attention module is employed to capture fine-grained interactions between personality traits and the inferred emotional representations. To further refine relational reasoning, EmoPerso adopts a self-taught strategy to enhance the model's reasoning capabilities iteratively. Extensive experiments on two benchmark datasets demonstrate that EmoPerso surpasses state-of-the-art models. The source code is available at https://github.com/slz0925/EmoPerso.

Revisiting Cross-Domain Problem for LiDAR-based 3D Object Detection

Deep learning models such as convolutional neural networks and transformers have been widely applied to solve 3D object detection problems in the domain of autonomous driving. While existing models have achieved outstanding performance on most open benchmarks, the generalization ability of these deep networks is still in doubt. To adapt models to other domains including different cities, countries, and weather, retraining with the target domain data is currently necessary, which hinders the wide application of autonomous driving. In this paper, we deeply analyze the cross-domain performance of the state-of-the-art models. We observe that most models will overfit the training domains and it is challenging to adapt them to other domains directly. Existing domain adaptation methods for 3D object detection problems are actually shifting the models' knowledge domain instead of improving their generalization ability. We then propose additional evaluation metrics -- the side-view and front-view AP -- to better analyze the core issues of the methods' heavy drops in accuracy levels. By using the proposed metrics and further evaluating the cross-domain performance in each dimension, we conclude that the overfitting problem happens more obviously on the front-view surface and the width dimension which usually faces the sensor and has more 3D points surrounding it. Meanwhile, our experiments indicate that the density of the point cloud data also significantly influences the models' cross-domain performance.

Neural varifolds: an aggregate representation for quantifying the geometry of point clouds

Point clouds are popular 3D representations for real-life objects (such as in LiDAR and Kinect) due to their detailed and compact representation of surface-based geometry. Recent approaches characterise the geometry of point clouds by bringing deep learning based techniques together with geometric fidelity metrics such as optimal transportation costs (e.g., Chamfer and Wasserstein metrics). In this paper, we propose a new surface geometry characterisation within this realm, namely a neural varifold representation of point clouds. Here the surface is represented as a measure/distribution over both point positions and tangent spaces of point clouds. The varifold representation quantifies not only the surface geometry of point clouds through the manifold-based discrimination, but also subtle geometric consistencies on the surface due to the combined product space. This study proposes neural varifold algorithms to compute the varifold norm between two point clouds using neural networks on point clouds and their neural tangent kernel representations. The proposed neural varifold is evaluated on three different sought-after tasks -- shape matching, few-shot shape classification and shape reconstruction. Detailed evaluation and comparison to the state-of-the-art methods demonstrate that the proposed versatile neural varifold is superior in shape matching and few-shot shape classification, and is competitive for shape reconstruction.

A Three-stage Approach for Segmenting Degraded Color Images: Smoothing, Lifting and Thresholding (SLaT)

In this paper, we propose a SLaT (Smoothing, Lifting and Thresholding) method with three stages for multiphase segmentation of color images corrupted by different degradations: noise, information loss, and blur. At the first stage, a convex variant of the Mumford-Shah model is applied to each channel to obtain a smooth image. We show that the model has unique solution under the different degradations. In order to properly handle the color information, the second stage is dimension lifting where we consider a new vector-valued image composed of the restored image and its transform in the secondary color space with additional information. This ensures that even if the first color space has highly correlated channels, we can still have enough information to give good segmentation results. In the last stage, we apply multichannel thresholding to the combined vector-valued image to find the segmentation. The number of phases is only required in the last stage, so users can choose or change it all without the need of solving the previous stages again. Experiments demonstrate that our SLaT method gives excellent results in terms of segmentation quality and CPU time in comparison with other state-of-the-art segmentation methods.

MarkIt: Training-Free Visual Markers for Precise Video Temporal Grounding

Video temporal grounding (VTG) aims to localize the start and end timestamps of the event described by a given query within an untrimmed video. Despite the strong open-world video understanding and recognition ability of video language large models (Vid-LLMs), outputting precise temporal grounding information remains challenging, since explicit temporal cues are scarce in untrimmed videos, and query-relevant entities are hard to track consistently across the video timeline. In this paper, we present \MarkIt{}, a training-free framework that transforms an input video into a query-conditioned marked video, which empowers Vid-LLMs to generate more reliable temporal localization predictions. The core component of \MarkIt{} is an annotation-free query-to-mask grounding bridge (Q2M-Bridge). Given a natural-language query, it automatically derives a compact set of canonical subject tags through linguistic parsing and normalization, then maps these tags to query-conditioned instance masks using text-conditioned open-vocabulary segmentation. The bridge also embeds lightweight semantic instance markers and a persistent frame index into each frame, effectively transforming long-range temporal reasoning into explicit visual cues for Vid-LLMs. \MarkIt{} adopts an inference-time plug-and-play design, needs no modifications to Vid-LLM weights, and is fully compatible with supervised fine-tuning. Experiments conducted on multiple mainstream moment retrieval and highlight detection benchmarks demonstrate that \MarkIt {} achieves state-of-the-art results, delivering consistent temporal grounding improvements across a wide range of existing models.

Privileged Foresight Distillation: Zero-Cost Future Correction for World Action Models

World action models jointly predict future video and action during training, raising an open question about what role the future-prediction branch actually plays. A recent finding shows that this branch can be removed at inference with little to no loss on common manipulation benchmarks, suggesting that future information may act merely as a regularizer on the shared visual backbone. We propose instead that joint training induces an action-conditioned correction that privileged future observations impose on action denoising, and that current-only policies capture this correction only partially. Making the account precise, we formulate privileged foresight as a residual in the action-denoising direction -- the difference between what a model predicts given the true future and what it predicts given only the current frame -- and introduce \emph{Privileged Foresight Distillation (PFD)}, which transfers this residual from a training-time teacher into a small adapter on a current-only student. The teacher and student share the same backbone and differ only in the attention mask over video tokens; future video is never generated at inference. Controlled experiments verify that this gain reflects a genuine future-conditioned correction rather than a side effect of capacity or regularization. Empirically, PFD achieves consistent improvements on LIBERO and RoboTwin manipulation benchmarks while preserving the current-only inference interface at negligible added latency. This view reframes the role of future information in world action models: not as a target to predict, nor as a regularizer to absorb, but as a compressible correction to be distilled.

Concept-Based Explainable Artificial Intelligence: Metrics and Benchmarks

Concept-based explanation methods, such as concept bottleneck models (CBMs), aim to improve the interpretability of machine learning models by linking their decisions to human-understandable concepts, under the critical assumption that such concepts can be accurately attributed to the network's feature space. However, this foundational assumption has not been rigorously validated, mainly because the field lacks standardised metrics and benchmarks to assess the existence and spatial alignment of such concepts. To address this, we propose three metrics: the concept global importance metric, the concept existence metric, and the concept location metric, including a technique for visualising concept activations, i.e., concept activation mapping. We benchmark post-hoc CBMs to illustrate their capabilities and challenges. Through qualitative and quantitative experiments, we demonstrate that, in many cases, even the most important concepts determined by post-hoc CBMs are not present in input images; moreover, when they are present, their saliency maps fail to align with the expected regions by either activating across an entire object or misidentifying relevant concept-specific regions. We analyse the root causes of these limitations, such as the natural correlation of concepts. Our findings underscore the need for more careful application of concept-based explanation techniques especially in settings where spatial interpretability is critical.

LL4G: Self-Supervised Dynamic Optimization for Graph-Based Personality Detection

Graph-based personality detection constructs graph structures from textual data, particularly social media posts. Current methods often struggle with sparse or noisy data and rely on static graphs, limiting their ability to capture dynamic changes between nodes and relationships. This paper introduces LL4G, a self-supervised framework leveraging large language models (LLMs) to optimize graph neural networks (GNNs). LLMs extract rich semantic features to generate node representations and to infer explicit and implicit relationships. The graph structure adaptively adds nodes and edges based on input data, continuously optimizing itself. The GNN then uses these optimized representations for joint training on node reconstruction, edge prediction, and contrastive learning tasks. This integration of semantic and structural information generates robust personality profiles. Experimental results on Kaggle and Pandora datasets show LL4G outperforms state-of-the-art models.

Less but Better: Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning of Large Language Models for Personality Detection

Personality detection automatically identifies an individual's personality from various data sources, such as social media texts. However, as the parameter scale of language models continues to grow, the computational cost becomes increasingly difficult to manage. Fine-tuning also grows more complex, making it harder to justify the effort and reliably predict outcomes. We introduce a novel parameter-efficient fine-tuning framework, PersLLM, to address these challenges. In PersLLM, a large language model (LLM) extracts high-dimensional representations from raw data and stores them in a dynamic memory layer. PersLLM then updates the downstream layers with a replaceable output network, enabling flexible adaptation to various personality detection scenarios. By storing the features in the memory layer, we eliminate the need for repeated complex computations by the LLM. Meanwhile, the lightweight output network serves as a proxy for evaluating the overall effectiveness of the framework, improving the predictability of results. Experimental results on key benchmark datasets like Kaggle and Pandora show that PersLLM significantly reduces computational cost while maintaining competitive performance and strong adaptability.

Discrepancy-based Diffusion Models for Lesion Detection in Brain MRI

Diffusion probabilistic models (DPMs) have exhibited significant effectiveness in computer vision tasks, particularly in image generation. However, their notable performance heavily relies on labelled datasets, which limits their application in medical images due to the associated high-cost annotations. Current DPM-related methods for lesion detection in medical imaging, which can be categorized into two distinct approaches, primarily rely on image-level annotations. The first approach, based on anomaly detection, involves learning reference healthy brain representations and identifying anomalies based on the difference in inference results. In contrast, the second approach, resembling a segmentation task, employs only the original brain multi-modalities as prior information for generating pixel-level annotations. In this paper, our proposed model - discrepancy distribution medical diffusion (DDMD) - for lesion detection in brain MRI introduces a novel framework by incorporating distinctive discrepancy features, deviating from the conventional direct reliance on image-level annotations or the original brain modalities. In our method, the inconsistency in image-level annotations is translated into distribution discrepancies among heterogeneous samples while preserving information within homogeneous samples. This property retains pixel-wise uncertainty and facilitates an implicit ensemble of segmentation, ultimately enhancing the overall detection performance. Thorough experiments conducted on the BRATS2020 benchmark dataset containing multimodal MRI scans for brain tumour detection demonstrate the great performance of our approach in comparison to state-of-the-art methods.

CornerPoint3D: Look at the Nearest Corner Instead of the Center

3D object detection aims to predict object centers, dimensions, and rotations from LiDAR point clouds. Despite its simplicity, LiDAR captures only the near side of objects, making center-based detectors prone to poor localization accuracy in cross-domain tasks with varying point distributions. Meanwhile, existing evaluation metrics designed for single-domain assessment also suffer from overfitting due to dataset-specific size variations. A key question arises: Do we really need models to maintain excellent performance in the entire 3D bounding boxes after being applied across domains? Actually, one of our main focuses is on preventing collisions between vehicles and other obstacles, especially in cross-domain scenarios where correctly predicting the sizes is much more difficult. To address these issues, we rethink cross-domain 3D object detection from a practical perspective. We propose two new metrics that evaluate a model's ability to detect objects' closer-surfaces to the LiDAR sensor. Additionally, we introduce EdgeHead, a refinement head that guides models to focus more on learnable closer surfaces, significantly improving cross-domain performance under both our new and traditional BEV/3D metrics. Furthermore, we argue that predicting the nearest corner rather than the object center enhances robustness. We propose a novel 3D object detector, coined as CornerPoint3D, which is built upon CenterPoint and uses heatmaps to supervise the learning and detection of the nearest corner of each object. Our proposed methods realize a balanced trade-off between the detection quality of entire bounding boxes and the locating accuracy of closer surfaces to the LiDAR sensor, outperforming the traditional center-based detector CenterPoint in multiple cross-domain tasks and providing a more practically reasonable and robust cross-domain 3D object detection solution.

SEIS: Subspace-based Equivariance and Invariance Scores for Neural Representations

Understanding how neural representations respond to geometric transformations is essential for evaluating whether learned features preserve meaningful spatial structure. Existing approaches primarily assess robustness by comparing model outputs under transformed inputs, offering limited insight into how geometric information is organized within internal representations and failing to distinguish between information loss and re-encoding. In this work, we introduce SEIS (Subspace-based Equivariance and Invariance Scores), a subspace metric for analyzing layer-wise feature representations under geometric transformations, disentangling equivariance from invariance without requiring labels or explicit knowledge of the transformation. Synthetic validation confirms that SEIS correctly recovers known transformations. Applied to trained classification networks, SEIS reveals a transition from equivariance in early layers to invariance in deeper layers, and that data augmentation increases invariance while preserving equivariance. We further show that multi-task learning induces synergistic gains in both properties at the shared encoder, and skip connections restore equivariance lost during decoding.

HiFi-MambaV2: Hierarchical Shared-Routed MoE for High-Fidelity MRI Reconstruction

Reconstructing high-fidelity MR images from undersampled k-space data requires recovering high-frequency details while maintaining anatomical coherence. We present HiFi-MambaV2, a hierarchical shared-routed Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) Mamba architecture that couples frequency decomposition with content-adaptive computation. The model comprises two core components: (i) a separable frequency-consistent Laplacian pyramid (SF-Lap) that delivers alias-resistant, stable low- and high-frequency streams; and (ii) a hierarchical shared-routed MoE that performs per-pixel top-1 sparse dispatch to shared experts and local routers, enabling effective specialization with stable cross-depth behavior. A lightweight global context path is fused into an unrolled, data-consistency-regularized backbone to reinforce long-range reasoning and preserve anatomical coherence. Evaluated on fastMRI, CC359, ACDC, M4Raw, and Prostate158, HiFi-MambaV2 consistently outperforms CNN-, Transformer-, and prior Mamba-based baselines in PSNR, SSIM, and NMSE across single- and multi-coil settings and multiple acceleration factors, consistently surpassing consistent improvements in high-frequency detail and overall structural fidelity. These results demonstrate that HiFi-MambaV2 enables reliable and robust MRI reconstruction.

Transformers with RL or SFT Provably Learn Sparse Boolean Functions, But Differently

Transformers can acquire Chain-of-Thought (CoT) capabilities to solve complex reasoning tasks through fine-tuning. Reinforcement learning (RL) and supervised fine-tuning (SFT) are two primary approaches to this end, yet their underlying mechanisms and differences remain theoretically unclear. In this work, we examine these aspects specifically for learning $k$-sparse Boolean functions with a one-layer transformer and intermediate supervision that is akin to CoT. In particular, we consider $k$-sparse Boolean functions that can be recursively decomposed into fixed 2-sparse Boolean functions. We analyze the learning dynamics of fine-tuning the transformer via either RL or SFT with CoT to identify sufficient conditions for it to provably learn these functions. We verify that these conditions hold for three basic examples, including $k$-PARITY, $k$-AND, and $k$-OR, thus demonstrating the learnability of both approaches. Notably, we reveal that RL and SFT exhibit distinct learning behaviors: RL learns the whole CoT chain simultaneously, whereas SFT learns the CoT chain step-by-step. Overall, our findings provide theoretical insights into the underlying mechanisms of RL and SFT as well as how they differ in triggering the CoT capabilities of transformers.

HIPPD: Brain-Inspired Hierarchical Information Processing for Personality Detection

Personality detection from text aims to infer an individual's personality traits based on linguistic patterns. However, existing machine learning approaches often struggle to capture contextual information spanning multiple posts and tend to fall short in extracting representative and robust features in semantically sparse environments. This paper presents HIPPD, a brain-inspired framework for personality detection that emulates the hierarchical information processing of the human brain. HIPPD utilises a large language model to simulate the cerebral cortex, enabling global semantic reasoning and deep feature abstraction. A dynamic memory module, modelled after the prefrontal cortex, performs adaptive gating and selective retention of critical features, with all adjustments driven by dopaminergic prediction error feedback. Subsequently, a set of specialised lightweight models, emulating the basal ganglia, are dynamically routed via a strict winner-takes-all mechanism to capture the personality-related patterns they are most proficient at recognising. Extensive experiments on the Kaggle and Pandora datasets demonstrate that HIPPD consistently outperforms state-of-the-art baselines.

GRASPTrack: Geometry-Reasoned Association via Segmentation and Projection for Multi-Object Tracking

Multi-object tracking (MOT) in monocular videos is fundamentally challenged by occlusions and depth ambiguity, issues that conventional tracking-by-detection (TBD) methods struggle to resolve owing to a lack of geometric awareness. To address these limitations, we introduce GRASPTrack, a novel depth-aware MOT framework that integrates monocular depth estimation and instance segmentation into a standard TBD pipeline to generate high-fidelity 3D point clouds from 2D detections, thereby enabling explicit 3D geometric reasoning. These 3D point clouds are then voxelized to enable a precise and robust Voxel-Based 3D Intersection-over-Union (IoU) for spatial association. To further enhance tracking robustness, our approach incorporates Depth-aware Adaptive Noise Compensation, which dynamically adjusts the Kalman filter process noise based on occlusion severity for more reliable state estimation. Additionally, we propose a Depth-enhanced Observation-Centric Momentum, which extends the motion direction consistency from the image plane into 3D space to improve motion-based association cues, particularly for objects with complex trajectories. Extensive experiments on the MOT17, MOT20, and DanceTrack benchmarks demonstrate that our method achieves competitive performance, significantly improving tracking robustness in complex scenes with frequent occlusions and intricate motion patterns.

HiFi-Mamba: Dual-Stream W-Laplacian Enhanced Mamba for High-Fidelity MRI Reconstruction

Reconstructing high-fidelity MR images from undersampled k-space data remains a challenging problem in MRI. While Mamba variants for vision tasks offer promising long-range modeling capabilities with linear-time complexity, their direct application to MRI reconstruction inherits two key limitations: (1) insensitivity to high-frequency anatomical details; and (2) reliance on redundant multi-directional scanning. To address these limitations, we introduce High-Fidelity Mamba (HiFi-Mamba), a novel dual-stream Mamba-based architecture comprising stacked W-Laplacian (WL) and HiFi-Mamba blocks. Specifically, the WL block performs fidelity-preserving spectral decoupling, producing complementary low- and high-frequency streams. This separation enables the HiFi-Mamba block to focus on low-frequency structures, enhancing global feature modeling. Concurrently, the HiFi-Mamba block selectively integrates high-frequency features through adaptive state-space modulation, preserving comprehensive spectral details. To eliminate the scanning redundancy, the HiFi-Mamba block adopts a streamlined unidirectional traversal strategy that preserves long-range modeling capability with improved computational efficiency. Extensive experiments on standard MRI reconstruction benchmarks demonstrate that HiFi-Mamba consistently outperforms state-of-the-art CNN-based, Transformer-based, and other Mamba-based models in reconstruction accuracy while maintaining a compact and efficient model design.

tCURLoRA: Tensor CUR Decomposition Based Low-Rank Parameter Adaptation and Its Application in Medical Image Segmentation

Transfer learning, by leveraging knowledge from pre-trained models, has significantly enhanced the performance of target tasks. However, as deep neural networks scale up, full fine-tuning introduces substantial computational and storage challenges in resource-constrained environments, limiting its widespread adoption. To address this, parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) methods have been developed to reduce computational complexity and storage requirements by minimizing the number of updated parameters. While matrix decomposition-based PEFT methods, such as LoRA, show promise, they struggle to fully capture the high-dimensional structural characteristics of model weights. In contrast, high-dimensional tensors offer a more natural representation of neural network weights, allowing for a more comprehensive capture of higher-order features and multi-dimensional interactions. In this paper, we propose tCURLoRA, a novel fine-tuning method based on tensor CUR decomposition. By concatenating pre-trained weight matrices into a three-dimensional tensor and applying tensor CUR decomposition, we update only the lower-order tensor components during fine-tuning, effectively reducing computational and storage overhead. Experimental results demonstrate that tCURLoRA outperforms existing PEFT methods in medical image segmentation tasks.

RNNs, CNNs and Transformers in Human Action Recognition: A Survey and a Hybrid Model

Human Action Recognition (HAR) encompasses the task of monitoring human activities across various domains, including but not limited to medical, educational, entertainment, visual surveillance, video retrieval, and the identification of anomalous activities. Over the past decade, the field of HAR has witnessed substantial progress by leveraging Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to effectively extract and comprehend intricate information, thereby enhancing the overall performance of HAR systems. Recently, the domain of computer vision has witnessed the emergence of Vision Transformers (ViTs) as a potent solution. The efficacy of transformer architecture has been validated beyond the confines of image analysis, extending their applicability to diverse video-related tasks. Notably, within this landscape, the research community has shown keen interest in HAR, acknowledging its manifold utility and widespread adoption across various domains. This article aims to present an encompassing survey that focuses on CNNs and the evolution of Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) to ViTs given their importance in the domain of HAR. By conducting a thorough examination of existing literature and exploring emerging trends, this study undertakes a critical analysis and synthesis of the accumulated knowledge in this field. Additionally, it investigates the ongoing efforts to develop hybrid approaches. Following this direction, this article presents a novel hybrid model that seeks to integrate the inherent strengths of CNNs and ViTs.

Non-negative Subspace Feature Representation for Few-shot Learning in Medical Imaging

Unlike typical visual scene recognition domains, in which massive datasets are accessible to deep neural networks, medical image interpretations are often obstructed by the paucity of data. In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of data-based few-shot learning in medical imaging by exploring different data attribute representations in a low-dimensional space. We introduce different types of non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) in few-shot learning, addressing the data scarcity issue in medical image classification. Extensive empirical studies are conducted in terms of validating the effectiveness of NMF, especially its supervised variants (e.g., discriminative NMF, and supervised and constrained NMF with sparseness), and the comparison with principal component analysis (PCA), i.e., the collaborative representation-based dimensionality reduction technique derived from eigenvectors. With 14 different datasets covering 11 distinct illness categories, thorough experimental results and comparison with related techniques demonstrate that NMF is a competitive alternative to PCA for few-shot learning in medical imaging, and the supervised NMF algorithms are more discriminative in the subspace with greater effectiveness. Furthermore, we show that the part-based representation of NMF, especially its supervised variants, is dramatically impactful in detecting lesion areas in medical imaging with limited samples.

Thinking Outside the Box: Orthogonal Approach to Equalizing Protected Attributes

There is growing concern that the potential of black box AI may exacerbate health-related disparities and biases such as gender and ethnicity in clinical decision-making. Biased decisions can arise from data availability and collection processes, as well as from the underlying confounding effects of the protected attributes themselves. This work proposes a machine learning-based orthogonal approach aiming to analyze and suppress the effect of the confounder through discriminant dimensionality reduction and orthogonalization of the protected attributes against the primary attribute information. By doing so, the impact of the protected attributes on disease diagnosis can be realized, undesirable feature correlations can be mitigated, and the model prediction performance can be enhanced.

Semantic Segmentation by Semantic Proportions

Semantic segmentation is a critical task in computer vision aiming to identify and classify individual pixels in an image, with numerous applications in for example autonomous driving and medical image analysis. However, semantic segmentation can be highly challenging particularly due to the need for large amounts of annotated data. Annotating images is a time-consuming and costly process, often requiring expert knowledge and significant effort; moreover, saving the annotated images could dramatically increase the storage space. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for semantic segmentation, requiring the rough information of individual semantic class proportions, shortened as semantic proportions, rather than the necessity of ground-truth segmentation maps. This greatly simplifies the data annotation process and thus will significantly reduce the annotation time, cost and storage space, opening up new possibilities for semantic segmentation tasks where obtaining the full ground-truth segmentation maps may not be feasible or practical. Our proposed method of utilising semantic proportions can (i) further be utilised as a booster in the presence of ground-truth segmentation maps to gain performance without extra data and model complexity, and (ii) also be seen as a parameter-free plug-and-play module, which can be attached to existing deep neural networks designed for semantic segmentation. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the good performance of our method compared to benchmark methods that rely on ground-truth segmentation maps. Utilising semantic proportions suggested in this work offers a promising direction for future semantic segmentation research.

GO-LDA: Generalised Optimal Linear Discriminant Analysis

Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) has been a useful tool in pattern recognition and data analysis research and practice. While linearity of class boundaries cannot always be expected, nonlinear projections through pre-trained deep neural networks have served to map complex data onto feature spaces in which linear discrimination has served well. The solution to binary LDA is obtained by eigenvalue analysis of within-class and between-class scatter matrices. It is well known that the multiclass LDA is solved by an extension to the binary LDA, a generalised eigenvalue problem, from which the largest subspace that can be extracted is of dimension one lower than the number of classes in the given problem. In this paper, we show that, apart from the first of the discriminant directions, the generalised eigenanalysis solution to multiclass LDA does neither yield orthogonal discriminant directions nor maximise discrimination of projected data along them. Surprisingly, to the best of our knowledge, this has not been noted in decades of literature on LDA. To overcome this drawback, we present a derivation with a strict theoretical support for sequentially obtaining discriminant directions that are orthogonal to previously computed ones and maximise in each step the Fisher criterion. We show distributions of projections along these axes and demonstrate that discrimination of data projected onto these discriminant directions has optimal separation, which is much higher than those from the generalised eigenvectors of the multiclass LDA. Using a wide range of benchmark tasks, we present a comprehensive empirical demonstration that on a number of pattern recognition and classification problems, the optimal discriminant subspaces obtained by the proposed method, referred to as GO-LDA (Generalised Optimal LDA), can offer superior accuracy.

3D Orientation Field Transform

The two-dimensional (2D) orientation field transform has been proved to be effective at enhancing 2D contours and curves in images by means of top-down processing. It, however, has no counterpart in three-dimensional (3D) images due to the extremely complicated orientation in 3D compared to 2D. Practically and theoretically, the demand and interest in 3D can only be increasing. In this work, we modularise the concept and generalise it to 3D curves. Different modular combinations are found to enhance curves to different extents and with different sensitivity to the packing of the 3D curves. In principle, the proposed 3D orientation field transform can naturally tackle any dimensions. As a special case, it is also ideal for 2D images, owning simpler methodology compared to the previous 2D orientation field transform. The proposed method is demonstrated with several transmission electron microscopy tomograms ranging from 2D curve enhancement to, the more important and interesting, 3D ones.

A Two-stage Classification Method for High-dimensional Data and Point Clouds

High-dimensional data classification is a fundamental task in machine learning and imaging science. In this paper, we propose a two-stage multiphase semi-supervised classification method for classifying high-dimensional data and unstructured point clouds. To begin with, a fuzzy classification method such as the standard support vector machine is used to generate a warm initialization. We then apply a two-stage approach named SaT (smoothing and thresholding) to improve the classification. In the first stage, an unconstraint convex variational model is implemented to purify and smooth the initialization, followed by the second stage which is to project the smoothed partition obtained at stage one to a binary partition. These two stages can be repeated, with the latest result as a new initialization, to keep improving the classification quality. We show that the convex model of the smoothing stage has a unique solution and can be solved by a specifically designed primal-dual algorithm whose convergence is guaranteed. We test our method and compare it with the state-of-the-art methods on several benchmark data sets. The experimental results demonstrate clearly that our method is superior in both the classification accuracy and computation speed for high-dimensional data and point clouds.

Three-dimensional Segmentation of Trees Through a Flexible Multi-Class Graph Cut Algorithm (MCGC)

Developing a robust algorithm for automatic individual tree crown (ITC) detection from laser scanning datasets is important for tracking the responses of trees to anthropogenic change. Such approaches allow the size, growth and mortality of individual trees to be measured, enabling forest carbon stocks and dynamics to be tracked and understood. Many algorithms exist for structurally simple forests including coniferous forests and plantations. Finding a robust solution for structurally complex, species-rich tropical forests remains a challenge; existing segmentation algorithms often perform less well than simple area-based approaches when estimating plot-level biomass. Here we describe a Multi-Class Graph Cut (MCGC) approach to tree crown delineation. This uses local three-dimensional geometry and density information, alongside knowledge of crown allometries, to segment individual tree crowns from LiDAR point clouds. Our approach robustly identifies trees in the top and intermediate layers of the canopy, but cannot recognise small trees. From these three-dimensional crowns, we are able to measure individual tree biomass. Comparing these estimates to those from permanent inventory plots, our algorithm is able to produce robust estimates of hectare-scale carbon density, demonstrating the power of ITC approaches in monitoring forests. The flexibility of our method to add additional dimensions of information, such as spectral reflectance, make this approach an obvious avenue for future development and extension to other sources of three-dimensional data, such as structure from motion datasets.

Linkage between piecewise constant Mumford-Shah model and ROF model and its virtue in image segmentation

The piecewise constant Mumford-Shah (PCMS) model and the Rudin-Osher-Fatemi (ROF) model are two important variational models in image segmentation and image restoration, respectively. In this paper, we explore a linkage between these models. We prove that for the two-phase segmentation problem a partial minimizer of the PCMS model can be obtained by thresholding the minimizer of the ROF model. A similar linkage is still valid for multiphase segmentation under specific assumptions. Thus it opens a new segmentation paradigm: image segmentation can be done via image restoration plus thresholding. This new paradigm, which circumvents the innate non-convex property of the PCMS model, therefore improves the segmentation performance in both efficiency (much faster than state-of-the-art methods based on PCMS model, particularly when the phase number is high) and effectiveness (producing segmentation results with better quality) due to the flexibility of the ROF model in tackling degraded images, such as noisy images, blurry images or images with information loss. As a by-product of the new paradigm, we derive a novel segmentation method, called thresholded-ROF (T-ROF) method, to illustrate the virtue of managing image segmentation through image restoration techniques. The convergence of the T-ROF method is proved, and elaborate experimental results and comparisons are presented.

A graph cut approach to 3D tree delineation, using integrated airborne LiDAR and hyperspectral imagery

Recognising individual trees within remotely sensed imagery has important applications in forest ecology and management. Several algorithms for tree delineation have been suggested, mostly based on locating local maxima or inverted basins in raster canopy height models (CHMs) derived from Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) data or photographs. However, these algorithms often lead to inaccurate estimates of forest stand characteristics due to the limited information content of raster CHMs. Here we develop a 3D tree delineation method which uses graph cut to delineate trees from the full 3D LiDAR point cloud, and also makes use of any optical imagery available (hyperspectral imagery in our case). First, conventional methods are used to locate local maxima in the CHM and generate an initial map of trees. Second, a graph is built from the LiDAR point cloud, fused with the hyperspectral data. For computational efficiency, the feature space of hyperspectral imagery is reduced using robust PCA. Third, a multi-class normalised cut is applied to the graph, using the initial map of trees to constrain the number of clusters and their locations. Finally, recursive normalised cut is used to subdivide, if necessary, each of the clusters identified by the initial analysis. We call this approach Multiclass Cut followed by Recursive Cut (MCRC). The effectiveness of MCRC was tested using three datasets: i) NewFor, ii) a coniferous forest in the Italian Alps, and iii) a deciduous woodland in the UK. The performance of MCRC was usually superior to that of other delineation methods, and was further improved by including high-resolution optical imagery. Since MCRC delineates the entire LiDAR point cloud in 3D, it allows individual crown characteristics to be measured. By making full use of the data available, graph cut has the potential to considerably improve the accuracy of tree delineation.

Wavelet-Based Segmentation on the Sphere

Segmentation, a useful/powerful technique in pattern recognition, is the process of identifying object outlines within images. There are a number of efficient algorithms for segmentation in Euclidean space that depend on the variational approach and partial differential equation modelling. Wavelets have been used successfully in various problems in image processing, including segmentation, inpainting, noise removal, super-resolution image restoration, and many others. Wavelets on the sphere have been developed to solve such problems for data defined on the sphere, which arise in numerous fields such as cosmology and geophysics. In this work, we propose a wavelet-based method to segment images on the sphere, accounting for the underlying geometry of spherical data. Our method is a direct extension of the tight-frame based segmentation method used to automatically identify tube-like structures such as blood vessels in medical imaging. It is compatible with any arbitrary type of wavelet frame defined on the sphere, such as axisymmetric wavelets, directional wavelets, curvelets, and hybrid wavelet constructions. Such an approach allows the desirable properties of wavelets to be naturally inherited in the segmentation process. In particular, directional wavelets and curvelets, which were designed to efficiently capture directional signal content, provide additional advantages in segmenting images containing prominent directional and curvilinear features. We present several numerical experiments, applying our wavelet-based segmentation method, as well as the common K-means method, on real-world spherical images. These experiments demonstrate the superiority of our method and show that it is capable of segmenting different kinds of spherical images, including those with prominent directional features. Moreover, our algorithm is efficient with convergence usually within a few iterations.

Non-parametric Image Registration of Airborne LiDAR, Hyperspectral and Photographic Imagery of Forests

There is much current interest in using multi-sensor airborne remote sensing to monitor the structure and biodiversity of forests. This paper addresses the application of non-parametric image registration techniques to precisely align images obtained from multimodal imaging, which is critical for the successful identification of individual trees using object recognition approaches. Non-parametric image registration, in particular the technique of optimizing one objective function containing data fidelity and regularization terms, provides flexible algorithms for image registration. Using a survey of woodlands in southern Spain as an example, we show that non-parametric image registration can be successful at fusing datasets when there is little prior knowledge about how the datasets are interrelated (i.e. in the absence of ground control points). The validity of non-parametric registration methods in airborne remote sensing is demonstrated by a series of experiments. Precise data fusion is a prerequisite to accurate recognition of objects within airborne imagery, so non-parametric image registration could make a valuable contribution to the analysis pipeline.

Variational Image Segmentation Model Coupled with Image Restoration Achievements

Image segmentation and image restoration are two important topics in image processing with great achievements. In this paper, we propose a new multiphase segmentation model by combining image restoration and image segmentation models. Utilizing image restoration aspects, the proposed segmentation model can effectively and robustly tackle high noisy images, blurry images, images with missing pixels, and vector-valued images. In particular, one of the most important segmentation models, the piecewise constant Mumford-Shah model, can be extended easily in this way to segment gray and vector-valued images corrupted for example by noise, blur or missing pixels after coupling a new data fidelity term which comes from image restoration topics. It can be solved efficiently using the alternating minimization algorithm, and we prove the convergence of this algorithm with three variables under mild condition. Experiments on many synthetic and real-world images demonstrate that our method gives better segmentation results in comparison to others state-of-the-art segmentation models especially for blurry images and images with missing pixels values.
