Adapting Rule Representation With Four-Parameter Beta Distribution for Learning Classifier SystemsHiroki Shiraishi, Yohei Hayamizu, Tomonori Hashiyama et al.
Rule representations significantly influence the search capabilities and decision boundaries within the search space of Learning Classifier Systems (LCSs), a family of rule-based machine learning systems that evolve interpretable models through evolutionary processes. However, it is very difficult to choose an appropriate rule representation for each problem. Additionally, some problems benefit from using different representations for different subspaces within the input space. Thus, an adaptive mechanism is needed to choose an appropriate rule representation for each rule in LCSs. This article introduces a flexible rule representation using a four-parameter beta distribution and integrates it into a fuzzy-style LCS. The four-parameter beta distribution can form various function shapes, and this flexibility enables our LCS to automatically select appropriate representations for different subspaces. Our rule representation can represent crisp/fuzzy decision boundaries in various boundary shapes, such as rectangles and bells, by controlling four parameters, compared to the standard representations such as trapezoidal ones. Leveraging this flexibility, our LCS is designed to adapt the appropriate rule representation for each subspace. Moreover, our LCS incorporates a generalization bias favoring crisp rules where feasible, enhancing model interpretability without compromising accuracy. Experimental results on real-world classification tasks show that our LCS achieves significantly superior test accuracy and produces more compact rule sets. Robot Planning and Situation Handling with Active PerceptionAustine Oloo, Zainab Altaweel, Yohei Hayamizu et al.
Current robots are capable of computing plans to accomplish complex tasks. However, real-world environments are inherently open and dynamic, and unforeseen situations frequently arise during plan execution, such as jamming doors and fallen objects on the floor. These situations may result from the robot's own action failures or from external disturbances, such as human activities. Detecting and handling such execution - time situations remains a significant challenge, limiting those robots' ability to achieve long-term autonomy. In this paper, we develop a planning and situation-handling framework, called VAP-TAMP, that enables robots to actively perceive and address unforeseen situations during plan execution. VAP-TAMP leverages action knowledge to strategically prompt vision-language models for active view selection and situation assessment, while constructing and reasoning over scene graphs for integrated task and motion planning. We evaluated VAP-TAMP using service tasks in simulation and on a mobile manipulation platform.

Fuzzy-UCS Revisited: Self-Adaptation of Rule Representations in Michigan-Style Learning Fuzzy-Classifier SystemsHiroki Shiraishi, Yohei Hayamizu, Tomonori Hashiyama
This paper focuses on the impact of rule representation in Michigan-style Learning Fuzzy-Classifier Systems (LFCSs) on its classification performance. A well-representation of the rules in an LFCS is crucial for improving its performance. However, conventional rule representations frequently need help addressing problems with unknown data characteristics. To address this issue, this paper proposes a supervised LFCS (i.e., Fuzzy-UCS) with a self-adaptive rule representation mechanism, entitled Adaptive-UCS. Adaptive-UCS incorporates a fuzzy indicator as a new rule parameter that sets the membership function of a rule as either rectangular (i.e., crisp) or triangular (i.e., fuzzy) shapes. The fuzzy indicator is optimized with evolutionary operators, allowing the system to search for an optimal rule representation. Results from extensive experiments conducted on continuous space problems demonstrate that Adaptive-UCS outperforms other UCSs with conventional crisp-hyperrectangular and fuzzy-hypertrapezoidal rule representations in classification accuracy. Additionally, Adaptive-UCS exhibits robustness in the case of noisy inputs and real-world problems with inherent uncertainty, such as missing values, leading to stable classification performance.

From Woofs to Words: Towards Intelligent Robotic Guide Dogs with Verbal CommunicationYohei Hayamizu, David DeFazio, Hrudayangam Mehta et al.
Assistive robotics is an important subarea of robotics that focuses on the well-being of people with disabilities. A robotic guide dog is an assistive quadruped robot that helps visually impaired people in obstacle avoidance and navigation. Enabling language capabilities for robotic guide dogs goes beyond naively adding an existing dialog system onto a mobile robot. The novel challenges include grounding language in the dynamically changing environment and improving spatial awareness for the human handler. To address those challenges, we develop a novel dialog system for robotic guide dogs that uses LLMs to verbalize both navigational plans and scenes. The goal is to enable verbal communication for collaborative decision-making within the handler-robot team. In experiments, we conducted a human study to evaluate different verbalization strategies and a simulation study to assess the efficiency and accuracy in navigation tasks.

DKPROMPT: Domain Knowledge Prompting Vision-Language Models for Open-World PlanningXiaohan Zhang, Zainab Altaweel, Yohei Hayamizu et al.
Vision-language models (VLMs) have been applied to robot task planning problems, where the robot receives a task in natural language and generates plans based on visual inputs. While current VLMs have demonstrated strong vision-language understanding capabilities, their performance is still far from being satisfactory in planning tasks. At the same time, although classical task planners, such as PDDL-based, are strong in planning for long-horizon tasks, they do not work well in open worlds where unforeseen situations are common. In this paper, we propose a novel task planning and execution framework, called DKPROMPT, which automates VLM prompting using domain knowledge in PDDL for classical planning in open worlds. Results from quantitative experiments show that DKPROMPT outperforms classical planning, pure VLM-based and a few other competitive baselines in task completion rate.

Learning Quadruped Locomotion Policies using Logical RulesDavid DeFazio, Yohei Hayamizu, Shiqi Zhang
Quadruped animals are capable of exhibiting a diverse range of locomotion gaits. While progress has been made in demonstrating such gaits on robots, current methods rely on motion priors, dynamics models, or other forms of extensive manual efforts. People can use natural language to describe dance moves. Could one use a formal language to specify quadruped gaits? To this end, we aim to enable easy gait specification and efficient policy learning. Leveraging Reward Machines~(RMs) for high-level gait specification over foot contacts, our approach is called RM-based Locomotion Learning~(RMLL), and supports adjusting gait frequency at execution time. Gait specification is enabled through the use of a few logical rules per gait (e.g., alternate between moving front feet and back feet) and does not require labor-intensive motion priors. Experimental results in simulation highlight the diversity of learned gaits (including two novel gaits), their energy consumption and stability across different terrains, and the superior sample-efficiency when compared to baselines. Guiding Robot Exploration in Reinforcement Learning via Automated PlanningYohei Hayamizu, Saeid Amiri, Kishan Chandan et al.
Reinforcement learning (RL) enables an agent to learn from trial-and-error experiences toward achieving long-term goals; automated planning aims to compute plans for accomplishing tasks using action knowledge. Despite their shared goal of completing complex tasks, the development of RL and automated planning has been largely isolated due to their different computational modalities. Focusing on improving RL agents' learning efficiency, we develop Guided Dyna-Q (GDQ) to enable RL agents to reason with action knowledge to avoid exploring less-relevant states. The action knowledge is used for generating artificial experiences from an optimistic simulation. GDQ has been evaluated in simulation and using a mobile robot conducting navigation tasks in a multi-room office environment. Compared with competitive baselines, GDQ significantly reduces the effort in exploration while improving the quality of learned policies.
