CLIP-Sculptor: Zero-Shot Generation of High-Fidelity and Diverse Shapes from Natural Language

Recent works have demonstrated that natural language can be used to generate and edit 3D shapes. However, these methods generate shapes with limited fidelity and diversity. We introduce CLIP-Sculptor, a method to address these constraints by producing high-fidelity and diverse 3D shapes without the need for (text, shape) pairs during training. CLIP-Sculptor achieves this in a multi-resolution approach that first generates in a low-dimensional latent space and then upscales to a higher resolution for improved shape fidelity. For improved shape diversity, we use a discrete latent space which is modeled using a transformer conditioned on CLIP's image-text embedding space. We also present a novel variant of classifier-free guidance, which improves the accuracy-diversity trade-off. Finally, we perform extensive experiments demonstrating that CLIP-Sculptor outperforms state-of-the-art baselines. The code is available at https://ivl.cs.brown.edu/#/projects/clip-sculptor.

3DALL-E: Integrating Text-to-Image AI in 3D Design Workflows

Text-to-image AI are capable of generating novel images for inspiration, but their applications for 3D design workflows and how designers can build 3D models using AI-provided inspiration have not yet been explored. To investigate this, we integrated DALL-E, GPT-3, and CLIP within a CAD software in 3DALL-E, a plugin that generates 2D image inspiration for 3D design. 3DALL-E allows users to construct text and image prompts based on what they are modeling. In a study with 13 designers, we found that designers saw great potential in 3DALL-E within their workflows and could use text-to-image AI to produce reference images, prevent design fixation, and inspire design considerations. We elaborate on prompting patterns observed across 3D modeling tasks and provide measures of prompt complexity observed across participants. From our findings, we discuss how 3DALL-E can merge with existing generative design workflows and propose prompt bibliographies as a form of human-AI design history.

Generative Disco: Text-to-Video Generation for Music Visualization

Visuals can enhance our experience of music, owing to the way they can amplify the emotions and messages conveyed within it. However, creating music visualization is a complex, time-consuming, and resource-intensive process. We introduce Generative Disco, a generative AI system that helps generate music visualizations with large language models and text-to-video generation. The system helps users visualize music in intervals by finding prompts to describe the images that intervals start and end on and interpolating between them to the beat of the music. We introduce design patterns for improving these generated videos: transitions, which express shifts in color, time, subject, or style, and holds, which help focus the video on subjects. A study with professionals showed that transitions and holds were a highly expressive framework that enabled them to build coherent visual narratives. We conclude on the generalizability of these patterns and the potential of generated video for creative professionals.

fog: Expressing Motion and Emotion through Function Composition of AI-Generated Code

Motion and emotion are core parts of intelligent, expressive behavior. In this paper, we introduce fog, a function composition framework for implementing and compose motion functions. We demonstrate how fog can be used to express motion and emotion in Heider-Simmel style animations. This code generation framework can help users generate functions for verbs, adverbs, gestures, and emotions to create an open-ended motion vocabulary. It is complemented by an animation editor that helps users refine motion through direct manipulation and dynamically generated UI. We evaluate our approach with a perceptual evaluation, where we test 452 fog-generated animations to see if people can recognize the semantic meaning of the motion. We find that fog's motion functions can be recognized at 68% accuracy, a 2.68x improvement over a chance baseline. In a mixed-methods user study with professionals and novices, we show that fog in interface form can support users with more rapid iteration, exploration, and control.

Sparks: Inspiration for Science Writing using Language Models

Large-scale language models are rapidly improving, performing well on a wide variety of tasks with little to no customization. In this work we investigate how language models can support science writing, a challenging writing task that is both open-ended and highly constrained. We present a system for generating "sparks", sentences related to a scientific concept intended to inspire writers. We find that our sparks are more coherent and diverse than a competitive language model baseline, and approach a human-created gold standard. In a study with 13 PhD students writing on topics of their own selection, we find three main use cases of sparks: aiding with crafting detailed sentences, providing interesting angles to engage readers, and demonstrating common reader perspectives. We also report on the various reasons sparks were considered unhelpful, and discuss how we might improve language models as writing support tools.

Design Guidelines for Prompt Engineering Text-to-Image Generative Models

Text-to-image generative models are a new and powerful way to generate visual artwork. However, the open-ended nature of text as interaction is double-edged; while users can input anything and have access to an infinite range of generations, they also must engage in brute-force trial and error with the text prompt when the result quality is poor. We conduct a study exploring what prompt keywords and model hyperparameters can help produce coherent outputs. In particular, we study prompts structured to include subject and style keywords and investigate success and failure modes of these prompts. Our evaluation of 5493 generations over the course of five experiments spans 51 abstract and concrete subjects as well as 51 abstract and figurative styles. From this evaluation, we present design guidelines that can help people produce better outcomes from text-to-image generative models.
