Improving CLIP Adaptation by Breaking Tail Alignment for Source-Free Cross-Domain Few-Shot LearningShuai Yi, Yixiong Zou, Yuhua Li et al.
Vision-Language Models (VLMs) such as CLIP demonstrate strong zero-shot generalization, but their performance significantly degrades in cross-domain scenarios with scarce target-domain training data (Cross-Domain Few-Shot Learning, CDFSL). In this paper, we focus on the target-domain few-shot finetuning in the CLIP-based CDFSL task. Prevailing finetuning paradigms uniformly align all image patch tokens with their corresponding textual embeddings. However, we find a counterintuitive phenomenon: actively pushing away certain low-similarity image tokens, termed "tail tokens", from their textual embeddings consistently improves target-domain performance. We delve into this phenomenon and provide a novel interpretation: under great domain shifts and scarce training data, the model can hardly extract semantic information from visual inputs; therefore, the common belief of alignment is valid only for tokens already containing sufficient semantic information; for tail tokens, forcing the alignment would lead to excessive overfitting to the scarce training, while breaking the alignment is more useful. Motivated by this, we propose Adaptive Tail-Head Alignment (ATHA), a novel fine-tuning strategy for CLIP that transforms the conventional uniform alignment paradigm to an adaptive alignment paradigm, with both alignment strengthening and weakening. Better Teacher Better Student: Dynamic Prior Knowledge for Knowledge DistillationZengyu Qiu, Xinzhu Ma, Kunlin Yang et al.
Knowledge distillation (KD) has shown very promising capabilities in transferring learning representations from large models (teachers) to small models (students). However, as the capacity gap between students and teachers becomes larger, existing KD methods fail to achieve better results. Our work shows that the `prior knowledge' is vital to KD, especially when applying large teachers. Particularly, we propose the dynamic prior knowledge (DPK), which integrates part of teacher's features as the prior knowledge before the feature distillation. This means that our method also takes the teacher's feature as `input', not just `target'. Besides, we dynamically adjust the ratio of the prior knowledge during the training phase according to the feature gap, thus guiding the student in an appropriate difficulty. To evaluate the proposed method, we conduct extensive experiments on two image classification benchmarks (i.e. CIFAR100 and ImageNet) and an object detection benchmark (i.e. MS COCO. The results demonstrate the superiority of our method in performance under varying settings. Besides, our DPK makes the performance of the student model positively correlated with that of the teacher model, which means that we can further boost the accuracy of students by applying larger teachers. More importantly, DPK provides a fast solution in teacher model selection for any given model.

Addressing Exacerbated Attention Sink for Source-Free Cross-Domain Few-Shot LearningShuai Yi, Yixiong Zou, Yuhua Li et al.
Vision-language models (VLMs) like CLIP have shown impressive generalization capabilities, yet their potential for Cross-Domain Few-Shot Learning (CDFSL) remains underexplored, where the model needs to transfer source-domain information to target domains with scarce training data. While the attention sink phenomenon has been observed in VLMs for certain tasks, its role in CDFSL scenarios has not been studied. In this paper, we uncover a critical issue overlooked by prior works: standard target-domain few-shot fine-tuning in CDFSL significantly exacerbates the attention sink problem, leading to poor discriminability across classes. To understand this phenomenon, through extensive experiments, we interpret it as the model's shortcut learning for domain adaptation: to overcome the huge domain gap between the source and target domains, the model shows a high tendency to push tokens that are initially closer to target-domain classes (i.e., simple tokens) to be even closer to these classes, exacerbating the attention sink and wasting the capability of learning other discriminative but initially further tokens (i.e., hard tokens). To address this, we propose a novel approach to dynamically re-weight tokens according to their relevance with target-domain classes during the target-domain finetuning, which explicitly suppresses the model's reliance on these simple tokens and enhances the learning of hard tokens, reducing sink tokens and enhancing discriminability. Combating Data Imbalances in Federated Semi-supervised Learning with Dual RegulatorsSikai Bai, Shuaicheng Li, Weiming Zhuang et al.
Federated learning has become a popular method to learn from decentralized heterogeneous data. Federated semi-supervised learning (FSSL) emerges to train models from a small fraction of labeled data due to label scarcity on decentralized clients. Existing FSSL methods assume independent and identically distributed (IID) labeled data across clients and consistent class distribution between labeled and unlabeled data within a client. This work studies a more practical and challenging scenario of FSSL, where data distribution is different not only across clients but also within a client between labeled and unlabeled data. To address this challenge, we propose a novel FSSL framework with dual regulators, FedDure. FedDure lifts the previous assumption with a coarse-grained regulator (C-reg) and a fine-grained regulator (F-reg): C-reg regularizes the updating of the local model by tracking the learning effect on labeled data distribution; F-reg learns an adaptive weighting scheme tailored for unlabeled instances in each client. We further formulate the client model training as bi-level optimization that adaptively optimizes the model in the client with two regulators. Theoretically, we show the convergence guarantee of the dual regulators. Empirically, we demonstrate that FedDure is superior to the existing methods across a wide range of settings, notably by more than 11 on CIFAR-10 and CINIC-10 datasets.

An Empirical Study of Pseudo-Labeling for Image-based 3D Object DetectionXinzhu Ma, Yuan Meng, Yinmin Zhang et al.
Image-based 3D detection is an indispensable component of the perception system for autonomous driving. However, it still suffers from the unsatisfying performance, one of the main reasons for which is the limited training data. Unfortunately, annotating the objects in the 3D space is extremely time/resource-consuming, which makes it hard to extend the training set arbitrarily. In this work, we focus on the semi-supervised manner and explore the feasibility of a cheaper alternative, i.e. pseudo-labeling, to leverage the unlabeled data. For this purpose, we conduct extensive experiments to investigate whether the pseudo-labels can provide effective supervision for the baseline models under varying settings. The experimental results not only demonstrate the effectiveness of the pseudo-labeling mechanism for image-based 3D detection (e.g. under monocular setting, we achieve 20.23 AP for moderate level on the KITTI-3D testing set without bells and whistles, improving the baseline model by 6.03 AP), but also show several interesting and noteworthy findings (e.g. the models trained with pseudo-labels perform better than that trained with ground-truth annotations based on the same training data). We hope this work can provide insights for the image-based 3D detection community under a semi-supervised setting. The codes, pseudo-labels, and pre-trained models will be publicly available.

Variational Relational Point Completion Network for Robust 3D ClassificationLiang Pan, Xinyi Chen, Zhongang Cai et al.
Real-scanned point clouds are often incomplete due to viewpoint, occlusion, and noise, which hampers 3D geometric modeling and perception. Existing point cloud completion methods tend to generate global shape skeletons and hence lack fine local details. Furthermore, they mostly learn a deterministic partial-to-complete mapping, but overlook structural relations in man-made objects. To tackle these challenges, this paper proposes a variational framework, Variational Relational point Completion Network (VRCNet) with two appealing properties: 1) Probabilistic Modeling. In particular, we propose a dual-path architecture to enable principled probabilistic modeling across partial and complete clouds. One path consumes complete point clouds for reconstruction by learning a point VAE. The other path generates complete shapes for partial point clouds, whose embedded distribution is guided by distribution obtained from the reconstruction path during training. 2) Relational Enhancement. Specifically, we carefully design point self-attention kernel and point selective kernel module to exploit relational point features, which refines local shape details conditioned on the coarse completion. In addition, we contribute multi-view partial point cloud datasets (MVP and MVP-40 dataset) containing over 200,000 high-quality scans, which render partial 3D shapes from 26 uniformly distributed camera poses for each 3D CAD model. Extensive experiments demonstrate that VRCNet outperforms state-of-the-art methods on all standard point cloud completion benchmarks. Notably, VRCNet shows great generalizability and robustness on real-world point cloud scans. Moreover, we can achieve robust 3D classification for partial point clouds with the help of VRCNet, which can highly increase classification accuracy.

Federated Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Face RecognitionWeiming Zhuang, Xin Gan, Yonggang Wen et al.
Given labeled data in a source domain, unsupervised domain adaptation has been widely adopted to generalize models for unlabeled data in a target domain, whose data distributions are different. However, existing works are inapplicable to face recognition under privacy constraints because they require sharing of sensitive face images between domains. To address this problem, we propose federated unsupervised domain adaptation for face recognition, FedFR. FedFR jointly optimizes clustering-based domain adaptation and federated learning to elevate performance on the target domain. Specifically, for unlabeled data in the target domain, we enhance a clustering algorithm with distance constrain to improve the quality of predicted pseudo labels. Besides, we propose a new domain constraint loss (DCL) to regularize source domain training in federated learning. Extensive experiments on a newly constructed benchmark demonstrate that FedFR outperforms the baseline and classic methods on the target domain by 3% to 14% on different evaluation metrics.

Probing Visual-Audio Representation for Video Highlight Detection via Hard-Pairs Guided Contrastive LearningShuaicheng Li, Feng Zhang, Kunlin Yang et al.
Video highlight detection is a crucial yet challenging problem that aims to identify the interesting moments in untrimmed videos. The key to this task lies in effective video representations that jointly pursue two goals, \textit{i.e.}, cross-modal representation learning and fine-grained feature discrimination. In this paper, these two challenges are tackled by not only enriching intra-modality and cross-modality relations for representation modeling but also shaping the features in a discriminative manner. Our proposed method mainly leverages the intra-modality encoding and cross-modality co-occurrence encoding for fully representation modeling. Specifically, intra-modality encoding augments the modality-wise features and dampens irrelevant modality via within-modality relation learning in both audio and visual signals. Meanwhile, cross-modality co-occurrence encoding focuses on the co-occurrence inter-modality relations and selectively captures effective information among multi-modality. The multi-modal representation is further enhanced by the global information abstracted from the local context. In addition, we enlarge the discriminative power of feature embedding with a hard-pairs guided contrastive learning (HPCL) scheme. A hard-pairs sampling strategy is further employed to mine the hard samples for improving feature discrimination in HPCL. Extensive experiments conducted on two benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed methods compared to other state-of-the-art methods.

NTIRE 2025 Challenge on Cross-Domain Few-Shot Object Detection: Methods and ResultsYuqian Fu, Xingyu Qiu, Bin Ren et al.
Cross-Domain Few-Shot Object Detection (CD-FSOD) poses significant challenges to existing object detection and few-shot detection models when applied across domains. In conjunction with NTIRE 2025, we organized the 1st CD-FSOD Challenge, aiming to advance the performance of current object detectors on entirely novel target domains with only limited labeled data. The challenge attracted 152 registered participants, received submissions from 42 teams, and concluded with 13 teams making valid final submissions. Participants approached the task from diverse perspectives, proposing novel models that achieved new state-of-the-art (SOTA) results under both open-source and closed-source settings. In this report, we present an overview of the 1st NTIRE 2025 CD-FSOD Challenge, highlighting the proposed solutions and summarizing the results submitted by the participants.

StyleFlow For Content-Fixed Image to Image TranslationWeichen Fan, Jinghuan Chen, Jiabin Ma et al.
Image-to-image (I2I) translation is a challenging topic in computer vision. We divide this problem into three tasks: strongly constrained translation, normally constrained translation, and weakly constrained translation. The constraint here indicates the extent to which the content or semantic information in the original image is preserved. Although previous approaches have achieved good performance in weakly constrained tasks, they failed to fully preserve the content in both strongly and normally constrained tasks, including photo-realism synthesis, style transfer, and colorization, etc. To achieve content-preserving transfer in strongly constrained and normally constrained tasks, we propose StyleFlow, a new I2I translation model that consists of normalizing flows and a novel Style-Aware Normalization (SAN) module. With the invertible network structure, StyleFlow first projects input images into deep feature space in the forward pass, while the backward pass utilizes the SAN module to perform content-fixed feature transformation and then projects back to image space. Our model supports both image-guided translation and multi-modal synthesis. We evaluate our model in several I2I translation benchmarks, and the results show that the proposed model has advantages over previous methods in both strongly constrained and normally constrained tasks.

Revisiting Continuity of Image Tokens for Cross-domain Few-shot LearningShuai Yi, Yixiong Zou, Yuhua Li et al.
Vision Transformer (ViT) has achieved remarkable success due to its large-scale pretraining on general domains, but it still faces challenges when applying it to downstream distant domains that have only scarce training data, which gives rise to the Cross-Domain Few-Shot Learning (CDFSL) task. Inspired by Self-Attention's insensitivity to token orders, we find an interesting phenomenon neglected in current works: disrupting the continuity of image tokens (i.e., making pixels not smoothly transited across patches) in ViT leads to a noticeable performance decline in the general (source) domain but only a marginal decrease in downstream target domains. This questions the role of image tokens' continuity in ViT's generalization under large domain gaps. In this paper, we delve into this phenomenon for an interpretation. We find continuity aids ViT in learning larger spatial patterns, which are harder to transfer than smaller ones, enlarging domain distances. Meanwhile, it implies that only smaller patterns within each patch could be transferred under extreme domain gaps. Based on this interpretation, we further propose a simple yet effective method for CDFSL that better disrupts the continuity of image tokens, encouraging the model to rely less on large patterns and more on smaller ones. Random Registers for Cross-Domain Few-Shot LearningShuai Yi, Yixiong Zou, Yuhua Li et al.
Cross-domain few-shot learning (CDFSL) aims to transfer knowledge from a data-sufficient source domain to data-scarce target domains. Although Vision Transformer (ViT) has shown superior capability in many vision tasks, its transferability against huge domain gaps in CDFSL is still under-explored. In this paper, we find an intriguing phenomenon: during the source-domain training, prompt tuning, as a common way to train ViT, could be harmful for the generalization of ViT in target domains, but setting them to random noises (i.e., random registers) could consistently improve target-domain performance. We then delve into this phenomenon for an interpretation. We find that learnable prompts capture domain information during the training on the source dataset, which views irrelevant visual patterns as vital cues for recognition. This can be viewed as a kind of overfitting and increases the sharpness of the loss landscapes. In contrast, random registers are essentially a novel way of perturbing attention for the sharpness-aware minimization, which helps the model find a flattened minimum in loss landscapes, increasing the transferability. Based on this phenomenon and interpretation, we further propose a simple but effective approach for CDFSL to enhance the perturbation on attention maps by adding random registers on the semantic regions of image tokens, improving the effectiveness and efficiency of random registers. Encoder-decoder with Multi-level Attention for 3D Human Shape and Pose EstimationZiniu Wan, Zhengjia Li, Maoqing Tian et al.
3D human shape and pose estimation is the essential task for human motion analysis, which is widely used in many 3D applications. However, existing methods cannot simultaneously capture the relations at multiple levels, including spatial-temporal level and human joint level. Therefore they fail to make accurate predictions in some hard scenarios when there is cluttered background, occlusion, or extreme pose. To this end, we propose Multi-level Attention Encoder-Decoder Network (MAED), including a Spatial-Temporal Encoder (STE) and a Kinematic Topology Decoder (KTD) to model multi-level attentions in a unified framework. STE consists of a series of cascaded blocks based on Multi-Head Self-Attention, and each block uses two parallel branches to learn spatial and temporal attention respectively. Meanwhile, KTD aims at modeling the joint level attention. It regards pose estimation as a top-down hierarchical process similar to SMPL kinematic tree. With the training set of 3DPW, MAED outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods by 6.2, 7.2, and 2.4 mm of PA-MPJPE on the three widely used benchmarks 3DPW, MPI-INF-3DHP, and Human3.6M respectively. GroupFormer: Group Activity Recognition with Clustered Spatial-Temporal TransformerShuaicheng Li, Qianggang Cao, Lingbo Liu et al.
Group activity recognition is a crucial yet challenging problem, whose core lies in fully exploring spatial-temporal interactions among individuals and generating reasonable group representations. However, previous methods either model spatial and temporal information separately, or directly aggregate individual features to form group features. To address these issues, we propose a novel group activity recognition network termed GroupFormer. It captures spatial-temporal contextual information jointly to augment the individual and group representations effectively with a clustered spatial-temporal transformer. Specifically, our GroupFormer has three appealing advantages: (1) A tailor-modified Transformer, Clustered Spatial-Temporal Transformer, is proposed to enhance the individual representation and group representation. (2) It models the spatial and temporal dependencies integrally and utilizes decoders to build the bridge between the spatial and temporal information. (3) A clustered attention mechanism is utilized to dynamically divide individuals into multiple clusters for better learning activity-aware semantic representations. Moreover, experimental results show that the proposed framework outperforms state-of-the-art methods on the Volleyball dataset and Collective Activity dataset. Learning Geometry-Guided Depth via Projective Modeling for Monocular 3D Object DetectionYinmin Zhang, Xinzhu Ma, Shuai Yi et al.
As a crucial task of autonomous driving, 3D object detection has made great progress in recent years. However, monocular 3D object detection remains a challenging problem due to the unsatisfactory performance in depth estimation. Most existing monocular methods typically directly regress the scene depth while ignoring important relationships between the depth and various geometric elements (e.g. bounding box sizes, 3D object dimensions, and object poses). In this paper, we propose to learn geometry-guided depth estimation with projective modeling to advance monocular 3D object detection. Specifically, a principled geometry formula with projective modeling of 2D and 3D depth predictions in the monocular 3D object detection network is devised. We further implement and embed the proposed formula to enable geometry-aware deep representation learning, allowing effective 2D and 3D interactions for boosting the depth estimation. Moreover, we provide a strong baseline through addressing substantial misalignment between 2D annotation and projected boxes to ensure robust learning with the proposed geometric formula. Experiments on the KITTI dataset show that our method remarkably improves the detection performance of the state-of-the-art monocular-based method without extra data by 2.80% on the moderate test setting. Delving into Localization Errors for Monocular 3D Object DetectionXinzhu Ma, Yinmin Zhang, Dan Xu et al.
Estimating 3D bounding boxes from monocular images is an essential component in autonomous driving, while accurate 3D object detection from this kind of data is very challenging. In this work, by intensive diagnosis experiments, we quantify the impact introduced by each sub-task and found the `localization error' is the vital factor in restricting monocular 3D detection. Besides, we also investigate the underlying reasons behind localization errors, analyze the issues they might bring, and propose three strategies. First, we revisit the misalignment between the center of the 2D bounding box and the projected center of the 3D object, which is a vital factor leading to low localization accuracy. Second, we observe that accurately localizing distant objects with existing technologies is almost impossible, while those samples will mislead the learned network. To this end, we propose to remove such samples from the training set for improving the overall performance of the detector. Lastly, we also propose a novel 3D IoU oriented loss for the size estimation of the object, which is not affected by `localization error'. We conduct extensive experiments on the KITTI dataset, where the proposed method achieves real-time detection and outperforms previous methods by a large margin. FishNet: A Versatile Backbone for Image, Region, and Pixel Level PredictionShuyang Sun, Jiangmiao Pang, Jianping Shi et al.
The basic principles in designing convolutional neural network (CNN) structures for predicting objects on different levels, e.g., image-level, region-level, and pixel-level are diverging. Generally, network structures designed specifically for image classification are directly used as default backbone structure for other tasks including detection and segmentation, but there is seldom backbone structure designed under the consideration of unifying the advantages of networks designed for pixel-level or region-level predicting tasks, which may require very deep features with high resolution. Towards this goal, we design a fish-like network, called FishNet. In FishNet, the information of all resolutions is preserved and refined for the final task. Besides, we observe that existing works still cannot \emph{directly} propagate the gradient information from deep layers to shallow layers. Our design can better handle this problem. Extensive experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the remarkable performance of the FishNet. In particular, on ImageNet-1k, the accuracy of FishNet is able to surpass the performance of DenseNet and ResNet with fewer parameters. Efficient Attention: Attention with Linear ComplexitiesZhuoran Shen, Mingyuan Zhang, Haiyu Zhao et al.
Dot-product attention has wide applications in computer vision and natural language processing. However, its memory and computational costs grow quadratically with the input size. Such growth prohibits its application on high-resolution inputs. To remedy this drawback, this paper proposes a novel efficient attention mechanism equivalent to dot-product attention but with substantially less memory and computational costs. Its resource efficiency allows more widespread and flexible integration of attention modules into a network, which leads to better accuracies. Empirical evaluations demonstrated the effectiveness of its advantages. Efficient attention modules brought significant performance boosts to object detectors and instance segmenters on MS-COCO 2017. Further, the resource efficiency democratizes attention to complex models, where high costs prohibit the use of dot-product attention. As an exemplar, a model with efficient attention achieved state-of-the-art accuracies for stereo depth estimation on the Scene Flow dataset. Pyramid Fusion Transformer for Semantic SegmentationZipeng Qin, Jianbo Liu, Xiaolin Zhang et al.
The recently proposed MaskFormer gives a refreshed perspective on the task of semantic segmentation: it shifts from the popular pixel-level classification paradigm to a mask-level classification method. In essence, it generates paired probabilities and masks corresponding to category segments and combines them during inference for the segmentation maps. In our study, we find that per-mask classification decoder on top of a single-scale feature is not effective enough to extract reliable probability or mask. To mine for rich semantic information across the feature pyramid, we propose a transformer-based Pyramid Fusion Transformer (PFT) for per-mask approach semantic segmentation with multi-scale features. The proposed transformer decoder performs cross-attention between the learnable queries and each spatial feature from the feature pyramid in parallel and uses cross-scale inter-query attention to exchange complimentary information. We achieve competitive performance on three widely used semantic segmentation datasets. In particular, on ADE20K validation set, our result with Swin-B backbone surpasses that of MaskFormer's with a much larger Swin-L backbone in both single-scale and multi-scale inference, achieving 54.1 mIoU and 55.7 mIoU respectively. Using a Swin-L backbone, we achieve single-scale 56.1 mIoU and multi-scale 57.4 mIoU, obtaining state-of-the-art performance on the dataset. Extensive experiments on three widely used semantic segmentation datasets verify the effectiveness of our proposed method.

CSG-Stump: A Learning Friendly CSG-Like Representation for Interpretable Shape ParsingDaxuan Ren, Jianmin Zheng, Jianfei Cai et al.
Generating an interpretable and compact representation of 3D shapes from point clouds is an important and challenging problem. This paper presents CSG-Stump Net, an unsupervised end-to-end network for learning shapes from point clouds and discovering the underlying constituent modeling primitives and operations as well. At the core is a three-level structure called {\em CSG-Stump}, consisting of a complement layer at the bottom, an intersection layer in the middle, and a union layer at the top. CSG-Stump is proven to be equivalent to CSG in terms of representation, therefore inheriting the interpretable, compact and editable nature of CSG while freeing from CSG's complex tree structures. Particularly, the CSG-Stump has a simple and regular structure, allowing neural networks to give outputs of a constant dimensionality, which makes itself deep-learning friendly. Due to these characteristics of CSG-Stump, CSG-Stump Net achieves superior results compared to previous CSG-based methods and generates much more appealing shapes, as confirmed by extensive experiments. Unsupervised representation learning has achieved outstanding performances using centralized data available on the Internet. However, the increasing awareness of privacy protection limits sharing of decentralized unlabeled image data that grows explosively in multiple parties (e.g., mobile phones and cameras). As such, a natural problem is how to leverage these data to learn visual representations for downstream tasks while preserving data privacy. To address this problem, we propose a novel federated unsupervised learning framework, FedU. In this framework, each party trains models from unlabeled data independently using contrastive learning with an online network and a target network. Then, a central server aggregates trained models and updates clients' models with the aggregated model. It preserves data privacy as each party only has access to its raw data. Decentralized data among multiple parties are normally non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID), leading to performance degradation. To tackle this challenge, we propose two simple but effective methods: 1) We design the communication protocol to upload only the encoders of online networks for server aggregation and update them with the aggregated encoder; 2) We introduce a new module to dynamically decide how to update predictors based on the divergence caused by non-IID. The predictor is the other component of the online network. Extensive experiments and ablations demonstrate the effectiveness and significance of FedU. It outperforms training with only one party by over 5% and other methods by over 14% in linear and semi-supervised evaluation on non-IID data.

Unsupervised Domain Adaptive 3D Detection with Multi-Level ConsistencyZhipeng Luo, Zhongang Cai, Changqing Zhou et al.
Deep learning-based 3D object detection has achieved unprecedented success with the advent of large-scale autonomous driving datasets. However, drastic performance degradation remains a critical challenge for cross-domain deployment. In addition, existing 3D domain adaptive detection methods often assume prior access to the target domain annotations, which is rarely feasible in the real world. To address this challenge, we study a more realistic setting, unsupervised 3D domain adaptive detection, which only utilizes source domain annotations. 1) We first comprehensively investigate the major underlying factors of the domain gap in 3D detection. Our key insight is that geometric mismatch is the key factor of domain shift. 2) Then, we propose a novel and unified framework, Multi-Level Consistency Network (MLC-Net), which employs a teacher-student paradigm to generate adaptive and reliable pseudo-targets. MLC-Net exploits point-, instance- and neural statistics-level consistency to facilitate cross-domain transfer. Extensive experiments demonstrate that MLC-Net outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods (including those using additional target domain information) on standard benchmarks. Notably, our approach is detector-agnostic, which achieves consistent gains on both single- and two-stage 3D detectors.

Domain Consistency Regularization for Unsupervised Multi-source Domain Adaptive ClassificationZhipeng Luo, Xiaobing Zhang, Shijian Lu et al.
Deep learning-based multi-source unsupervised domain adaptation (MUDA) has been actively studied in recent years. Compared with single-source unsupervised domain adaptation (SUDA), domain shift in MUDA exists not only between the source and target domains but also among multiple source domains. Most existing MUDA algorithms focus on extracting domain-invariant representations among all domains whereas the task-specific decision boundaries among classes are largely neglected. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end trainable network that exploits domain Consistency Regularization for unsupervised Multi-source domain Adaptive classification (CRMA). CRMA aligns not only the distributions of each pair of source and target domains but also that of all domains. For each pair of source and target domains, we employ an intra-domain consistency to regularize a pair of domain-specific classifiers to achieve intra-domain alignment. In addition, we design an inter-domain consistency that targets joint inter-domain alignment among all domains. To address different similarities between multiple source domains and the target domain, we design an authorization strategy that assigns different authorities to domain-specific classifiers adaptively for optimal pseudo label prediction and self-training. Extensive experiments show that CRMA tackles unsupervised domain adaptation effectively under a multi-source setup and achieves superior adaptation consistently across multiple MUDA datasets.

Towards Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Deep Face Recognition under Privacy Constraints via Federated LearningWeiming Zhuang, Xin Gan, Yonggang Wen et al.
Unsupervised domain adaptation has been widely adopted to generalize models for unlabeled data in a target domain, given labeled data in a source domain, whose data distributions differ from the target domain. However, existing works are inapplicable to face recognition under privacy constraints because they require sharing sensitive face images between two domains. To address this problem, we propose a novel unsupervised federated face recognition approach (FedFR). FedFR improves the performance in the target domain by iteratively aggregating knowledge from the source domain through federated learning. It protects data privacy by transferring models instead of raw data between domains. Besides, we propose a new domain constraint loss (DCL) to regularize source domain training. DCL suppresses the data volume dominance of the source domain. We also enhance a hierarchical clustering algorithm to predict pseudo labels for the unlabeled target domain accurately. To this end, FedFR forms an end-to-end training pipeline: (1) pre-train in the source domain; (2) predict pseudo labels by clustering in the target domain; (3) conduct domain-constrained federated learning across two domains. Extensive experiments and analysis on two newly constructed benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of FedFR. It outperforms the baseline and classic methods in the target domain by over 4% on the more realistic benchmark. We believe that FedFR will shed light on applying federated learning to more computer vision tasks under privacy constraints.

Unsupervised 3D Shape Completion through GAN InversionJunzhe Zhang, Xinyi Chen, Zhongang Cai et al.
Most 3D shape completion approaches rely heavily on partial-complete shape pairs and learn in a fully supervised manner. Despite their impressive performances on in-domain data, when generalizing to partial shapes in other forms or real-world partial scans, they often obtain unsatisfactory results due to domain gaps. In contrast to previous fully supervised approaches, in this paper we present ShapeInversion, which introduces Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) inversion to shape completion for the first time. ShapeInversion uses a GAN pre-trained on complete shapes by searching for a latent code that gives a complete shape that best reconstructs the given partial input. In this way, ShapeInversion no longer needs paired training data, and is capable of incorporating the rich prior captured in a well-trained generative model. On the ShapeNet benchmark, the proposed ShapeInversion outperforms the SOTA unsupervised method, and is comparable with supervised methods that are learned using paired data. It also demonstrates remarkable generalization ability, giving robust results for real-world scans and partial inputs of various forms and incompleteness levels. Importantly, ShapeInversion naturally enables a series of additional abilities thanks to the involvement of a pre-trained GAN, such as producing multiple valid complete shapes for an ambiguous partial input, as well as shape manipulation and interpolation.

Real-scanned point clouds are often incomplete due to viewpoint, occlusion, and noise. Existing point cloud completion methods tend to generate global shape skeletons and hence lack fine local details. Furthermore, they mostly learn a deterministic partial-to-complete mapping, but overlook structural relations in man-made objects. To tackle these challenges, this paper proposes a variational framework, Variational Relational point Completion network (VRCNet) with two appealing properties: 1) Probabilistic Modeling. In particular, we propose a dual-path architecture to enable principled probabilistic modeling across partial and complete clouds. One path consumes complete point clouds for reconstruction by learning a point VAE. The other path generates complete shapes for partial point clouds, whose embedded distribution is guided by distribution obtained from the reconstruction path during training. 2) Relational Enhancement. Specifically, we carefully design point self-attention kernel and point selective kernel module to exploit relational point features, which refines local shape details conditioned on the coarse completion. In addition, we contribute a multi-view partial point cloud dataset (MVP dataset) containing over 100,000 high-quality scans, which renders partial 3D shapes from 26 uniformly distributed camera poses for each 3D CAD model. Extensive experiments demonstrate that VRCNet outperforms state-of-theart methods on all standard point cloud completion benchmarks. Notably, VRCNet shows great generalizability and robustness on real-world point cloud scans.

HAVANA: Hierarchical and Variation-Normalized Autoencoder for Person Re-identificationJiawei Ren, Xiao Ma, Chen Xu et al.
Person Re-Identification (Re-ID) is of great importance to the many video surveillance systems. Learning discriminative features for Re-ID remains a challenge due to the large variations in the image space, e.g., continuously changing human poses, illuminations and point of views. In this paper, we propose HAVANA, a novel extensible, light-weight HierArchical and VAriation-Normalized Autoencoder that learns features robust to intra-class variations. In contrast to existing generative approaches that prune the variations with heavy extra supervised signals, HAVANA suppresses the intra-class variations with a Variation-Normalized Autoencoder trained with no additional supervision. We also introduce a novel Jensen-Shannon triplet loss for contrastive distribution learning in Re-ID. In addition, we present Hierarchical Variation Distiller, a hierarchical VAE to factorize the latent representation and explicitly model the variations. To the best of our knowledge, HAVANA is the first VAE-based framework for person ReID.

Towards Overcoming False Positives in Visual Relationship DetectionDaisheng Jin, Xiao Ma, Chongzhi Zhang et al.
In this paper, we investigate the cause of the high false positive rate in Visual Relationship Detection (VRD). We observe that during training, the relationship proposal distribution is highly imbalanced: most of the negative relationship proposals are easy to identify, e.g., the inaccurate object detection, which leads to the under-fitting of low-frequency difficult proposals. This paper presents Spatially-Aware Balanced negative pRoposal sAmpling (SABRA), a robust VRD framework that alleviates the influence of false positives. To effectively optimize the model under imbalanced distribution, SABRA adopts Balanced Negative Proposal Sampling (BNPS) strategy for mini-batch sampling. BNPS divides proposals into 5 well defined sub-classes and generates a balanced training distribution according to the inverse frequency. BNPS gives an easier optimization landscape and significantly reduces the number of false positives. To further resolve the low-frequency challenging false positive proposals with high spatial ambiguity, we improve the spatial modeling ability of SABRA on two aspects: a simple and efficient multi-head heterogeneous graph attention network (MH-GAT) that models the global spatial interactions of objects, and a spatial mask decoder that learns the local spatial configuration. SABRA outperforms SOTA methods by a large margin on two human-object interaction (HOI) datasets and one general VRD dataset.

BiPointNet: Binary Neural Network for Point CloudsHaotong Qin, Zhongang Cai, Mingyuan Zhang et al.
To alleviate the resource constraint for real-time point cloud applications that run on edge devices, in this paper we present BiPointNet, the first model binarization approach for efficient deep learning on point clouds. We discover that the immense performance drop of binarized models for point clouds mainly stems from two challenges: aggregation-induced feature homogenization that leads to a degradation of information entropy, and scale distortion that hinders optimization and invalidates scale-sensitive structures. With theoretical justifications and in-depth analysis, our BiPointNet introduces Entropy-Maximizing Aggregation (EMA) to modulate the distribution before aggregation for the maximum information entropy, and Layer-wise Scale Recovery (LSR) to efficiently restore feature representation capacity. Extensive experiments show that BiPointNet outperforms existing binarization methods by convincing margins, at the level even comparable with the full precision counterpart. We highlight that our techniques are generic, guaranteeing significant improvements on various fundamental tasks and mainstream backbones. Moreover, BiPointNet gives an impressive 14.7x speedup and 18.9x storage saving on real-world resource-constrained devices.

Performance Optimization for Federated Person Re-identification via Benchmark AnalysisWeiming Zhuang, Yonggang Wen, Xuesen Zhang et al.
Federated learning is a privacy-preserving machine learning technique that learns a shared model across decentralized clients. It can alleviate privacy concerns of personal re-identification, an important computer vision task. In this work, we implement federated learning to person re-identification (FedReID) and optimize its performance affected by statistical heterogeneity in the real-world scenario. We first construct a new benchmark to investigate the performance of FedReID. This benchmark consists of (1) nine datasets with different volumes sourced from different domains to simulate the heterogeneous situation in reality, (2) two federated scenarios, and (3) an enhanced federated algorithm for FedReID. The benchmark analysis shows that the client-edge-cloud architecture, represented by the federated-by-dataset scenario, has better performance than client-server architecture in FedReID. It also reveals the bottlenecks of FedReID under the real-world scenario, including poor performance of large datasets caused by unbalanced weights in model aggregation and challenges in convergence. Then we propose two optimization methods: (1) To address the unbalanced weight problem, we propose a new method to dynamically change the weights according to the scale of model changes in clients in each training round; (2) To facilitate convergence, we adopt knowledge distillation to refine the server model with knowledge generated from client models on a public dataset. Experiment results demonstrate that our strategies can achieve much better convergence with superior performance on all datasets. We believe that our work will inspire the community to further explore the implementation of federated learning on more computer vision tasks in real-world scenarios.

BriNet: Towards Bridging the Intra-class and Inter-class Gaps in One-Shot SegmentationXianghui Yang, Bairun Wang, Kaige Chen et al.
Few-shot segmentation focuses on the generalization of models to segment unseen object instances with limited training samples. Although tremendous improvements have been achieved, existing methods are still constrained by two factors. (1) The information interaction between query and support images is not adequate, leaving intra-class gap. (2) The object categories at the training and inference stages have no overlap, leaving the inter-class gap. Thus, we propose a framework, BriNet, to bridge these gaps. First, more information interactions are encouraged between the extracted features of the query and support images, i.e., using an Information Exchange Module to emphasize the common objects. Furthermore, to precisely localize the query objects, we design a multi-path fine-grained strategy which is able to make better use of the support feature representations. Second, a new online refinement strategy is proposed to help the trained model adapt to unseen classes, achieved by switching the roles of the query and the support images at the inference stage. The effectiveness of our framework is demonstrated by experimental results, which outperforms other competitive methods and leads to a new state-of-the-art on both PASCAL VOC and MSCOCO dataset.

MessyTable: Instance Association in Multiple Camera ViewsZhongang Cai, Junzhe Zhang, Daxuan Ren et al.
We present an interesting and challenging dataset that features a large number of scenes with messy tables captured from multiple camera views. Each scene in this dataset is highly complex, containing multiple object instances that could be identical, stacked and occluded by other instances. The key challenge is to associate all instances given the RGB image of all views. The seemingly simple task surprisingly fails many popular methods or heuristics that we assume good performance in object association. The dataset challenges existing methods in mining subtle appearance differences, reasoning based on contexts, and fusing appearance with geometric cues for establishing an association. We report interesting findings with some popular baselines, and discuss how this dataset could help inspire new problems and catalyse more robust formulations to tackle real-world instance association problems. Balanced Meta-Softmax for Long-Tailed Visual RecognitionJiawei Ren, Cunjun Yu, Shunan Sheng et al.
Deep classifiers have achieved great success in visual recognition. However, real-world data is long-tailed by nature, leading to the mismatch between training and testing distributions. In this paper, we show that the Softmax function, though used in most classification tasks, gives a biased gradient estimation under the long-tailed setup. This paper presents Balanced Softmax, an elegant unbiased extension of Softmax, to accommodate the label distribution shift between training and testing. Theoretically, we derive the generalization bound for multiclass Softmax regression and show our loss minimizes the bound. In addition, we introduce Balanced Meta-Softmax, applying a complementary Meta Sampler to estimate the optimal class sample rate and further improve long-tailed learning. In our experiments, we demonstrate that Balanced Meta-Softmax outperforms state-of-the-art long-tailed classification solutions on both visual recognition and instance segmentation tasks.

Spatio-Temporal Graph Transformer Networks for Pedestrian Trajectory PredictionCunjun Yu, Xiao Ma, Jiawei Ren et al.
Understanding crowd motion dynamics is critical to real-world applications, e.g., surveillance systems and autonomous driving. This is challenging because it requires effectively modeling the socially aware crowd spatial interaction and complex temporal dependencies. We believe attention is the most important factor for trajectory prediction. In this paper, we present STAR, a Spatio-Temporal grAph tRansformer framework, which tackles trajectory prediction by only attention mechanisms. STAR models intra-graph crowd interaction by TGConv, a novel Transformer-based graph convolution mechanism. The inter-graph temporal dependencies are modeled by separate temporal Transformers. STAR captures complex spatio-temporal interactions by interleaving between spatial and temporal Transformers. To calibrate the temporal prediction for the long-lasting effect of disappeared pedestrians, we introduce a read-writable external memory module, consistently being updated by the temporal Transformer. We show that with only attention mechanism, STAR achieves state-of-the-art performance on 5 commonly used real-world pedestrian prediction datasets.

Cheaper Pre-training Lunch: An Efficient Paradigm for Object DetectionDongzhan Zhou, Xinchi Zhou, Hongwen Zhang et al.
In this paper, we propose a general and efficient pre-training paradigm, Montage pre-training, for object detection. Montage pre-training needs only the target detection dataset while taking only 1/4 computational resources compared to the widely adopted ImageNet pre-training.To build such an efficient paradigm, we reduce the potential redundancy by carefully extracting useful samples from the original images, assembling samples in a Montage manner as input, and using an ERF-adaptive dense classification strategy for model pre-training. These designs include not only a new input pattern to improve the spatial utilization but also a novel learning objective to expand the effective receptive field of the pretrained model. The efficiency and effectiveness of Montage pre-training are validated by extensive experiments on the MS-COCO dataset, where the results indicate that the models using Montage pre-training are able to achieve on-par or even better detection performances compared with the ImageNet pre-training.

MagnifierNet: Towards Semantic Adversary and Fusion for Person Re-identificationYushi Lan, Yuan Liu, Maoqing Tian et al.
Although person re-identification (ReID) has achieved significant improvement recently by enforcing part alignment, it is still a challenging task when it comes to distinguishing visually similar identities or identifying the occluded person. In these scenarios, magnifying details in each part features and selectively fusing them together may provide a feasible solution. In this work, we propose MagnifierNet, a triple-branch network which accurately mines details from whole to parts. Firstly, the holistic salient features are encoded by a global branch. Secondly, to enhance detailed representation for each semantic region, the "Semantic Adversarial Branch" is designed to learn from dynamically generated semantic-occluded samples during training. Meanwhile, we introduce "Semantic Fusion Branch" to filter out irrelevant noises by selectively fusing semantic region information sequentially. To further improve feature diversity, we introduce a novel loss function "Semantic Diversity Loss" to remove redundant overlaps across learned semantic representations. State-of-the-art performance has been achieved on three benchmarks by large margins. Specifically, the mAP score is improved by 6% and 5% on the most challenging CUHK03-L and CUHK03-D benchmarks.

GTC: Guided Training of CTC Towards Efficient and Accurate Scene Text RecognitionWenyang Hu, Xiaocong Cai, Jun Hou et al.
Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) and attention mechanism are two main approaches used in recent scene text recognition works. Compared with attention-based methods, CTC decoder has a much shorter inference time, yet a lower accuracy. To design an efficient and effective model, we propose the guided training of CTC (GTC), where CTC model learns a better alignment and feature representations from a more powerful attentional guidance. With the benefit of guided training, CTC model achieves robust and accurate prediction for both regular and irregular scene text while maintaining a fast inference speed. Moreover, to further leverage the potential of CTC decoder, a graph convolutional network (GCN) is proposed to learn the local correlations of extracted features. Extensive experiments on standard benchmarks demonstrate that our end-to-end model achieves a new state-of-the-art for regular and irregular scene text recognition and needs 6 times shorter inference time than attentionbased methods.

EcoNAS: Finding Proxies for Economical Neural Architecture SearchDongzhan Zhou, Xinchi Zhou, Wenwei Zhang et al.
Neural Architecture Search (NAS) achieves significant progress in many computer vision tasks. While many methods have been proposed to improve the efficiency of NAS, the search progress is still laborious because training and evaluating plausible architectures over large search space is time-consuming. Assessing network candidates under a proxy (i.e., computationally reduced setting) thus becomes inevitable. In this paper, we observe that most existing proxies exhibit different behaviors in maintaining the rank consistency among network candidates. In particular, some proxies can be more reliable -- the rank of candidates does not differ much comparing their reduced setting performance and final performance. In this paper, we systematically investigate some widely adopted reduction factors and report our observations. Inspired by these observations, we present a reliable proxy and further formulate a hierarchical proxy strategy. The strategy spends more computations on candidate networks that are potentially more accurate, while discards unpromising ones in early stage with a fast proxy. This leads to an economical evolutionary-based NAS (EcoNAS), which achieves an impressive 400x search time reduction in comparison to the evolutionary-based state of the art (8 vs. 3150 GPU days). Some new proxies led by our observations can also be applied to accelerate other NAS methods while still able to discover good candidate networks with performance matching those found by previous proxy strategies.

FD-GAN: Pose-guided Feature Distilling GAN for Robust Person Re-identificationYixiao Ge, Zhuowan Li, Haiyu Zhao et al.
Person re-identification (reID) is an important task that requires to retrieve a person's images from an image dataset, given one image of the person of interest. For learning robust person features, the pose variation of person images is one of the key challenges. Existing works targeting the problem either perform human alignment, or learn human-region-based representations. Extra pose information and computational cost is generally required for inference. To solve this issue, a Feature Distilling Generative Adversarial Network (FD-GAN) is proposed for learning identity-related and pose-unrelated representations. It is a novel framework based on a Siamese structure with multiple novel discriminators on human poses and identities. In addition to the discriminators, a novel same-pose loss is also integrated, which requires appearance of a same person's generated images to be similar. After learning pose-unrelated person features with pose guidance, no auxiliary pose information and additional computational cost is required during testing. Our proposed FD-GAN achieves state-of-the-art performance on three person reID datasets, which demonstrates that the effectiveness and robust feature distilling capability of the proposed FD-GAN.

HMS-Net: Hierarchical Multi-scale Sparsity-invariant Network for Sparse Depth CompletionZixuan Huang, Junming Fan, Shenggan Cheng et al.
Dense depth cues are important and have wide applications in various computer vision tasks. In autonomous driving, LIDAR sensors are adopted to acquire depth measurements around the vehicle to perceive the surrounding environments. However, depth maps obtained by LIDAR are generally sparse because of its hardware limitation. The task of depth completion attracts increasing attention, which aims at generating a dense depth map from an input sparse depth map. To effectively utilize multi-scale features, we propose three novel sparsity-invariant operations, based on which, a sparsity-invariant multi-scale encoder-decoder network (HMS-Net) for handling sparse inputs and sparse feature maps is also proposed. Additional RGB features could be incorporated to further improve the depth completion performance. Our extensive experiments and component analysis on two public benchmarks, KITTI depth completion benchmark and NYU-depth-v2 dataset, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. As of Aug. 12th, 2018, on KITTI depth completion leaderboard, our proposed model without RGB guidance ranks first among all peer-reviewed methods without using RGB information, and our model with RGB guidance ranks second among all RGB-guided methods.

Learning Monocular Depth by Distilling Cross-domain Stereo NetworksXiaoyang Guo, Hongsheng Li, Shuai Yi et al.
Monocular depth estimation aims at estimating a pixelwise depth map for a single image, which has wide applications in scene understanding and autonomous driving. Existing supervised and unsupervised methods face great challenges. Supervised methods require large amounts of depth measurement data, which are generally difficult to obtain, while unsupervised methods are usually limited in estimation accuracy. Synthetic data generated by graphics engines provide a possible solution for collecting large amounts of depth data. However, the large domain gaps between synthetic and realistic data make directly training with them challenging. In this paper, we propose to use the stereo matching network as a proxy to learn depth from synthetic data and use predicted stereo disparity maps for supervising the monocular depth estimation network. Cross-domain synthetic data could be fully utilized in this novel framework. Different strategies are proposed to ensure learned depth perception capability well transferred across different domains. Our extensive experiments show state-of-the-art results of monocular depth estimation on KITTI dataset.

End-to-End Deep Kronecker-Product Matching for Person Re-identificationYantao Shen, Tong Xiao, Hongsheng Li et al.
Person re-identification aims to robustly measure similarities between person images. The significant variation of person poses and viewing angles challenges for accurate person re-identification. The spatial layout and correspondences between query person images are vital information for tackling this problem but are ignored by most state-of-the-art methods. In this paper, we propose a novel Kronecker Product Matching module to match feature maps of different persons in an end-to-end trainable deep neural network. A novel feature soft warping scheme is designed for aligning the feature maps based on matching results, which is shown to be crucial for achieving superior accuracy. The multi-scale features based on hourglass-like networks and self-residual attention are also exploited to further boost the re-identification performance. The proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods on the Market-1501, CUHK03, and DukeMTMC datasets, which demonstrates the effectiveness and generalization ability of our proposed approach.

Person re-identification aims at finding a person of interest in an image gallery by comparing the probe image of this person with all the gallery images. It is generally treated as a retrieval problem, where the affinities between the probe image and gallery images (P2G affinities) are used to rank the retrieved gallery images. However, most existing methods only consider P2G affinities but ignore the affinities between all the gallery images (G2G affinity). Some frameworks incorporated G2G affinities into the testing process, which is not end-to-end trainable for deep neural networks. In this paper, we propose a novel group-shuffling random walk network for fully utilizing the affinity information between gallery images in both the training and testing processes. The proposed approach aims at end-to-end refining the P2G affinities based on G2G affinity information with a simple yet effective matrix operation, which can be integrated into deep neural networks. Feature grouping and group shuffle are also proposed to apply rich supervisions for learning better person features. The proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods on the Market-1501, CUHK03, and DukeMTMC datasets by large margins, which demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Person Re-identification with Deep Similarity-Guided Graph Neural NetworkYantao Shen, Hongsheng Li, Shuai Yi et al.
The person re-identification task requires to robustly estimate visual similarities between person images. However, existing person re-identification models mostly estimate the similarities of different image pairs of probe and gallery images independently while ignores the relationship information between different probe-gallery pairs. As a result, the similarity estimation of some hard samples might not be accurate. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning framework, named Similarity-Guided Graph Neural Network (SGGNN) to overcome such limitations. Given a probe image and several gallery images, SGGNN creates a graph to represent the pairwise relationships between probe-gallery pairs (nodes) and utilizes such relationships to update the probe-gallery relation features in an end-to-end manner. Accurate similarity estimation can be achieved by using such updated probe-gallery relation features for prediction. The input features for nodes on the graph are the relation features of different probe-gallery image pairs. The probe-gallery relation feature updating is then performed by the messages passing in SGGNN, which takes other nodes' information into account for similarity estimation. Different from conventional GNN approaches, SGGNN learns the edge weights with rich labels of gallery instance pairs directly, which provides relation fusion more precise information. The effectiveness of our proposed method is validated on three public person re-identification datasets.

HydraPlus-Net: Attentive Deep Features for Pedestrian AnalysisXihui Liu, Haiyu Zhao, Maoqing Tian et al.
Pedestrian analysis plays a vital role in intelligent video surveillance and is a key component for security-centric computer vision systems. Despite that the convolutional neural networks are remarkable in learning discriminative features from images, the learning of comprehensive features of pedestrians for fine-grained tasks remains an open problem. In this study, we propose a new attention-based deep neural network, named as HydraPlus-Net (HP-net), that multi-directionally feeds the multi-level attention maps to different feature layers. The attentive deep features learned from the proposed HP-net bring unique advantages: (1) the model is capable of capturing multiple attentions from low-level to semantic-level, and (2) it explores the multi-scale selectiveness of attentive features to enrich the final feature representations for a pedestrian image. We demonstrate the effectiveness and generality of the proposed HP-net for pedestrian analysis on two tasks, i.e. pedestrian attribute recognition and person re-identification. Intensive experimental results have been provided to prove that the HP-net outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on various datasets.

Learning Deep Neural Networks for Vehicle Re-ID with Visual-spatio-temporal Path ProposalsYantao Shen, Tong Xiao, Hongsheng Li et al.
Vehicle re-identification is an important problem and has many applications in video surveillance and intelligent transportation. It gains increasing attention because of the recent advances of person re-identification techniques. However, unlike person re-identification, the visual differences between pairs of vehicle images are usually subtle and even challenging for humans to distinguish. Incorporating additional spatio-temporal information is vital for solving the challenging re-identification task. Existing vehicle re-identification methods ignored or used over-simplified models for the spatio-temporal relations between vehicle images. In this paper, we propose a two-stage framework that incorporates complex spatio-temporal information for effectively regularizing the re-identification results. Given a pair of vehicle images with their spatio-temporal information, a candidate visual-spatio-temporal path is first generated by a chain MRF model with a deeply learned potential function, where each visual-spatio-temporal state corresponds to an actual vehicle image with its spatio-temporal information. A Siamese-CNN+Path-LSTM model takes the candidate path as well as the pairwise queries to generate their similarity score. Extensive experiments and analysis show the effectiveness of our proposed method and individual components.

Hierarchical Deep Recurrent Architecture for Video UnderstandingLuming Tang, Boyang Deng, Haiyu Zhao et al.
This paper introduces the system we developed for the Youtube-8M Video Understanding Challenge, in which a large-scale benchmark dataset was used for multi-label video classification. The proposed framework contains hierarchical deep architecture, including the frame-level sequence modeling part and the video-level classification part. In the frame-level sequence modelling part, we explore a set of methods including Pooling-LSTM (PLSTM), Hierarchical-LSTM (HLSTM), Random-LSTM (RLSTM) in order to address the problem of large amount of frames in a video. We also introduce two attention pooling methods, single attention pooling (ATT) and multiply attention pooling (Multi-ATT) so that we can pay more attention to the informative frames in a video and ignore the useless frames. In the video-level classification part, two methods are proposed to increase the classification performance, i.e. Hierarchical-Mixture-of-Experts (HMoE) and Classifier Chains (CC). Our final submission is an ensemble consisting of 18 sub-models. In terms of the official evaluation metric Global Average Precision (GAP) at 20, our best submission achieves 0.84346 on the public 50% of test dataset and 0.84333 on the private 50% of test data.
