Multi-Granularity Class Prototype Topology Distillation for Class-Incremental Source-Free Unsupervised Domain Adaptation

Peihua Deng, Jiehua Zhang, Xichun Sheng et al.

This paper explores the Class-Incremental Source-Free Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (CI-SFUDA) problem, where the unlabeled target data come incrementally without access to labeled source instances. This problem poses two challenges, the interference of similar source-class knowledge in target-class representation learning and the shocks of new target knowledge to old ones. To address them, we propose the Multi-Granularity Class Prototype Topology Distillation (GROTO) algorithm, which effectively transfers the source knowledge to the class-incremental target domain. Concretely, we design the multi-granularity class prototype self-organization module and the prototype topology distillation module. First, we mine the positive classes by modeling accumulation distributions. Next, we introduce multi-granularity class prototypes to generate reliable pseudo-labels, and exploit them to promote the positive-class target feature self-organization. Second, the positive-class prototypes are leveraged to construct the topological structures of source and target feature spaces. Then, we perform the topology distillation to continually mitigate the shocks of new target knowledge to old ones. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance on three public datasets. Code is available at https://github.com/dengpeihua/GROTO.

Neutrino Reconstruction in TRIDENT Based on Graph Neural Network

Cen Mo, Fuyudi Zhang, Liang Li

TRopIcal DEep-sea Neutrino Telescope (TRIDENT) is a next-generation neutrino telescope to be located in the South China Sea. With a large detector volume and the use of advanced hybrid digital optical modules (hDOMs), TRIDENT aims to discover multiple astrophysical neutrino sources and probe all-flavor neutrino physics. The reconstruction resolution of primary neutrinos is on the critical path to these scientific goals. We have developed a novel reconstruction method based on graph neural network (GNN) for TRIDENT. In this paper, we present the reconstruction performance of the GNN-based approach on both track- and shower-like neutrino events in TRIDENT.

Machine Discovery of Partial Differential Equations from Spatiotemporal Data

Ye Yuan, Junlin Li, Liang Li et al.

The study presents a general framework for discovering underlying Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) using measured spatiotemporal data. The method, called Sparse Spatiotemporal System Discovery ($\text{S}^3\text{d}$), decides which physical terms are necessary and which can be removed (because they are physically negligible in the sense that they do not affect the dynamics too much) from a pool of candidate functions. The method is built on the recent development of Sparse Bayesian Learning; which enforces the sparsity in the to-be-identified PDEs, and therefore can balance the model complexity and fitting error with theoretical guarantees. Without leveraging prior knowledge or assumptions in the discovery process, we use an automated approach to discover ten types of PDEs, including the famous Navier-Stokes and sine-Gordon equations, from simulation data alone. Moreover, we demonstrate our data-driven discovery process with the Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation (CGLE) using data measured from a traveling-wave convection experiment. Our machine discovery approach presents solutions that has the potential to inspire, support and assist physicists for the establishment of physical laws from measured spatiotemporal data, especially in notorious fields that are often too complex to allow a straightforward establishment of physical law, such as biophysics, fluid dynamics, neuroscience or nonlinear optics.
