Learning Adaptive Reasoning Paths for Efficient Visual ReasoningYixu Huang, Tinghui Zhu, Muhao Chen
Visual reasoning models (VRMs) have recently shown strong cross-modal reasoning capabilities by integrating visual perception with language reasoning. However, they often suffer from overthinking, producing unnecessarily long reasoning chains for any tasks. We attribute this issue to \textbf{Reasoning Path Redundancy} in visual reasoning: many visual questions do not require the full reasoning process. To address this, we propose \textbf{AVR}, an adaptive visual reasoning framework that decomposes visual reasoning into three cognitive functions: visual perception, logical reasoning, and answer application. It further enables models to dynamically choose among three response formats: Full Format, Perception-Only Format, and Direct Answer. AVR is trained with FS-GRPO, an adaptation of Group Relative Policy Optimization that encourages the model to select the most efficient reasoning format while preserving correctness. Experiments on multiple vision-language benchmarks show that AVR reduces token usage by 50--90\% while maintaining overall accuracy, especially in perception-intensive tasks. These results demonstrate that adaptive visual reasoning can effectively mitigate overthinking in VRMs. Code and data are available at: https://github.com/RunRiotComeOn/AVR.

Video Models Can Reason with Verifiable RewardsTinghui Zhu, Sheng Zhang, James Y. Huang et al.
Video diffusion models have made rapid progress in perceptual realism and temporal coherence, but they remain primarily optimized for plausible generation rather than verifiable reasoning. This limitation is especially pronounced in tasks where generated videos must satisfy explicit spatial, temporal, or logical constraints. Inspired by the role of reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR) in reasoning-oriented language models, we introduce VideoRLVR, a practical recipe for optimizing video diffusion models with rule-based feedback. VideoRLVR formulates video reasoning as the generation of verifiable visual trajectories and consists of an SDE-GRPO optimization backbone, dense decomposed rewards, and an Early-Step Focus strategy for efficient training. The Early-Step Focus strategy restricts policy optimization to the early denoising phase, reducing training latency by about 40% while preserving performance. We evaluate VideoRLVR on Maze, FlowFree, and Sokoban, three procedurally generated domains with objective success criteria. Across these tasks, VideoRLVR consistently improves over supervised fine-tuning baselines, with dense decomposed rewards proving especially important in low-success-rate settings. Our RL-optimized model also outperforms the evaluated proprietary and open-source video generation models on these verifiable reasoning benchmarks and out-of-domain benchmarks. These results suggest that verifiable RL can move video models beyond perceptual imitation toward more reliable rule-consistent visual reasoning.

When Vision Speaks for SoundXiaofei Wen, Wenjie Jacky Mo, Xingyu Fu et al.
Despite rapid progress in video-capable MLLMs, we find that their apparent audio understanding in videos is often vision-driven: models rely on visual cues to infer or hallucinate acoustic information, rather than verifying the audio stream. This issue appears across both state-of-the-art open-source omni models and leading closed-source models from providers such as Google and OpenAI. We characterize this failure mode as an audio-visual Clever Hans effect, in which models appear (falsely) audio-grounded, but actually exploit visual-acoustic correlations without verifying whether the audio and visual streams are truly aligned. To systematically study this behavior, we introduce Thud, an intervention-driven probing framework based on three counterfactual audio edits: Shift, which tests temporal synchronization; Mute, which tests sound existence; and Swap, which tests audio-visual consistency. Beyond diagnosis, we further study a two-stage alignment recipe: intervention-derived preference pairs teach audio verification, while event-level general video preferences regularize the model against over-specialization. Our best 10K-sample recipe improves average performance across the three intervention dimensions by 28 percentage points, while slightly improving performance on general video and audio-visual QA benchmarks.

Towards Visual Taxonomy ExpansionTinghui Zhu, Jingping Liu, Jiaqing Liang et al.
Taxonomy expansion task is essential in organizing the ever-increasing volume of new concepts into existing taxonomies. Most existing methods focus exclusively on using textual semantics, leading to an inability to generalize to unseen terms and the "Prototypical Hypernym Problem." In this paper, we propose Visual Taxonomy Expansion (VTE), introducing visual features into the taxonomy expansion task. We propose a textual hypernymy learning task and a visual prototype learning task to cluster textual and visual semantics. In addition to the tasks on respective modalities, we introduce a hyper-proto constraint that integrates textual and visual semantics to produce fine-grained visual semantics. Our method is evaluated on two datasets, where we obtain compelling results. Specifically, on the Chinese taxonomy dataset, our method significantly improves accuracy by 8.75 %. Additionally, our approach performs better than ChatGPT on the Chinese taxonomy dataset.

How Easily do Irrelevant Inputs Skew the Responses of Large Language Models?Siye Wu, Jian Xie, Jiangjie Chen et al.
By leveraging the retrieval of information from external knowledge databases, Large Language Models (LLMs) exhibit enhanced capabilities for accomplishing many knowledge-intensive tasks. However, due to the inherent flaws of current retrieval systems, there might exist irrelevant information within those retrieving top-ranked passages. In this work, we present a comprehensive investigation into the robustness of LLMs to different types of irrelevant information under various conditions. We initially introduce a framework to construct high-quality irrelevant information that ranges from semantically unrelated, partially related, and related to questions. Furthermore, our analysis demonstrates that the constructed irrelevant information not only scores highly on similarity metrics, being highly retrieved by existing systems, but also bears semantic connections to the context. Our investigation reveals that current LLMs still face challenges in discriminating highly semantically related information and can be easily distracted by these irrelevant yet misleading content. Besides, we also find that current solutions for handling irrelevant information have limitations in improving the robustness of LLMs to such distractions. AQuaUI: Visual Token Reduction for GUI Agents with Adaptive QuadtreesYuankai Li, Tinghui Zhu, Ha Min Son et al.
Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) have recently emerged as promising backbones for GUI-agent models, where high-resolution GUI screenshots are introduced to the prompts at each iteration step. However, these screenshots exhibit highly non-uniform spatial information density: large regions may carry little information and are visually homogeneous, while key text and icons may require high visual fidelity. Existing approaches to this problem either require additional training or rely on attention-based token compression, ignoring the structured layout and spatial redundancy of GUI screenshots. To fill the gap, this paper proposes AquaUI, a training-free inference-time token reduction method for GUI agent models that utilizes the non-uniform information density in screenshots. AQuaUI constructs an adaptive quadtree on each screenshot input and keeps one representative merged token per leaf of the quadtree. AQuaUI preserves the spatial positions of retained tokens throughout the pipeline to ensure that all position-encoding stages remain consistent. To further improve temporal consistency across multi-step GUI interactions, we propose a conditional quadtree algorithm that leverages the continuity between consecutive screenshots within a single request. Specifically, it refines the current quadtree using previous quadtrees as references, helping preserve fine-grained regions across static or mildly shifted GUI states. We implement AQuaUI on state-of-the-art GUI agent models and conduct experiments on standard grounding and navigational benchmarks. AQuaUI consistently shows improved accuracy-efficiency trade-offs over prior baselines. Notably, on GUI-Owl-1.5-32B-Instruct, AQuaUI achieves up to 13.22% speedup and 29.52% fewer visual tokens while retaining 99.06% of full-token performance, suggesting that the spatial redundancy of GUI screenshots can be exploited at inference without retraining.

TravelPlanner: A Benchmark for Real-World Planning with Language AgentsJian Xie, Kai Zhang, Jiangjie Chen et al. · microsoft-research
Planning has been part of the core pursuit for artificial intelligence since its conception, but earlier AI agents mostly focused on constrained settings because many of the cognitive substrates necessary for human-level planning have been lacking. Recently, language agents powered by large language models (LLMs) have shown interesting capabilities such as tool use and reasoning. Are these language agents capable of planning in more complex settings that are out of the reach of prior AI agents? To advance this investigation, we propose TravelPlanner, a new planning benchmark that focuses on travel planning, a common real-world planning scenario. It provides a rich sandbox environment, various tools for accessing nearly four million data records, and 1,225 meticulously curated planning intents and reference plans. Comprehensive evaluations show that the current language agents are not yet capable of handling such complex planning tasks-even GPT-4 only achieves a success rate of 0.6%. Language agents struggle to stay on task, use the right tools to collect information, or keep track of multiple constraints. However, we note that the mere possibility for language agents to tackle such a complex problem is in itself non-trivial progress. TravelPlanner provides a challenging yet meaningful testbed for future language agents.

Is Extending Modality The Right Path Towards Omni-Modality?Tinghui Zhu, Kai Zhang, Muhao Chen et al.
Omni-modal language models (OLMs) aim to integrate and reason over diverse input modalities--such as text, images, video, and audio--while maintaining strong language capabilities. Despite recent advancements, existing models, especially open-source ones, remain far from true omni-modality, struggling to generalize beyond the specific modality pairs they are trained on or to achieve strong performance when processing multi-modal inputs. We study the effect of extending modality, the dominant technique for training multimodal models, where an off-the-shelf language model is fine-tuned on target-domain and language data. Specifically, we investigate three key questions: (1) Does modality extension compromise core language abilities? (2) Can model merging effectively integrate independently fine-tuned modality-specific models to achieve omni-modality? (3) Does omni-modality extension lead to better knowledge sharing and generalization compared to sequential extension? Through extensive experiments, we analyze these trade-offs and provide insights into the feasibility of achieving true omni-modality using current approaches.

From Persona to Personalization: A Survey on Role-Playing Language AgentsJiangjie Chen, Xintao Wang, Rui Xu et al.
Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) have significantly boosted the rise of Role-Playing Language Agents (RPLAs), i.e., specialized AI systems designed to simulate assigned personas. By harnessing multiple advanced abilities of LLMs, including in-context learning, instruction following, and social intelligence, RPLAs achieve a remarkable sense of human likeness and vivid role-playing performance. RPLAs can mimic a wide range of personas, ranging from historical figures and fictional characters to real-life individuals. Consequently, they have catalyzed numerous AI applications, such as emotional companions, interactive video games, personalized assistants and copilots, and digital clones. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive survey of this field, illustrating the evolution and recent progress in RPLAs integrating with cutting-edge LLM technologies. We categorize personas into three types: 1) Demographic Persona, which leverages statistical stereotypes; 2) Character Persona, focused on well-established figures; and 3) Individualized Persona, customized through ongoing user interactions for personalized services. We begin by presenting a comprehensive overview of current methodologies for RPLAs, followed by the details for each persona type, covering corresponding data sourcing, agent construction, and evaluation. Afterward, we discuss the fundamental risks, existing limitations, and future prospects of RPLAs. Additionally, we provide a brief review of RPLAs in AI applications, which reflects practical user demands that shape and drive RPLA research. Through this work, we aim to establish a clear taxonomy of RPLA research and applications, and facilitate future research in this critical and ever-evolving field, and pave the way for a future where humans and RPLAs coexist in harmony.

Be My Eyes: Extending Large Language Models to New Modalities Through Multi-Agent CollaborationJames Y. Huang, Sheng Zhang, Qianchu Liu et al.
Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in challenging, knowledge-intensive reasoning tasks. However, extending LLMs to perceive and reason over a new modality (e.g., vision), often requires costly development of large-scale vision language models (VLMs) with LLMs as backbones. Smaller VLMs are more efficient and adaptable but often lack the broad knowledge and reasoning capabilities of frontier LLMs. In this work, we propose BeMyEyes, a modular, multi-agent framework for extending LLMs to multimodal reasoning by orchestrating collaboration between efficient, adaptable VLMs as perceivers and powerful LLMs as reasoners through conversations. We then introduce a data synthesis and supervised fine-tuning pipeline to train the perceiver agent to effectively collaborate with the reasoner agent. By combining the complementary strengths of perception and reasoning agents, BeMyEyes avoids the need for training large-scale multimodal models, preserves the generalization and reasoning capabilities of LLMs, and allows flexible extension to new domains and modalities. Experiments show that our framework unlocks the multimodal reasoning capabilities for LLMs, enabling a lightweight and fully open-source solution, i.e. equipping text-only DeepSeek-R1 with Qwen2.5-VL-7B perceiver, to outperform large-scale proprietary VLMs such as GPT-4o on a wide range of knowledge-intensive multimodal tasks. These results demonstrate the effectiveness, modularity, and scalability of our multi-agent approach for building future multimodal reasoning systems.

OmniGuard: Unified Omni-Modal Guardrails with Deliberate ReasoningBoyu Zhu, Xiaofei Wen, Wenjie Jacky Mo et al.
Omni-modal Large Language Models (OLLMs) that process text, images, videos, and audio introduce new challenges for safety and value guardrails in human-AI interaction. Prior guardrail research largely targets unimodal settings and typically frames safeguarding as binary classification, which limits robustness across diverse modalities and tasks. To address this gap, we propose OmniGuard, the first family of omni-modal guardrails that performs safeguarding across all modalities with deliberate reasoning ability. To support the training of OMNIGUARD, we curate a large, comprehensive omni-modal safety dataset comprising over 210K diverse samples, with inputs that cover all modalities through both unimodal and cross-modal samples. Each sample is annotated with structured safety labels and carefully curated safety critiques from expert models through targeted distillation. Extensive experiments on 15 benchmarks show that OmniGuard achieves strong effectiveness and generalization across a wide range of multimodal safety scenarios. Importantly, OmniGuard provides a unified framework that enforces policies and mitigates risks in omni-modalities, paving the way toward building more robust and capable omnimodal safeguarding systems.

LLM Agents for Education: Advances and ApplicationsZhendong Chu, Shen Wang, Jian Xie et al.
Large Language Model (LLM) agents have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in automating tasks and driving innovation across diverse educational applications. In this survey, we provide a systematic review of state-of-the-art research on LLM agents in education, categorizing them into two broad classes: (1) \emph{Pedagogical Agents}, which focus on automating complex pedagogical tasks to support both teachers and students; and (2) \emph{Domain-Specific Educational Agents}, which are tailored for specialized fields such as science education, language learning, and professional development. We comprehensively examine the technological advancements underlying these LLM agents, including key datasets, benchmarks, and algorithmic frameworks that drive their effectiveness. Furthermore, we discuss critical challenges such as privacy, bias and fairness concerns, hallucination mitigation, and integration with existing educational ecosystems. This survey aims to provide a comprehensive technological overview of LLM agents for education, fostering further research and collaboration to enhance their impact for the greater good of learners and educators alike.

Deductive Beam Search: Decoding Deducible Rationale for Chain-of-Thought ReasoningTinghui Zhu, Kai Zhang, Jian Xie et al. · microsoft-research
Recent advancements have significantly augmented the reasoning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) through various methodologies, especially chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning. However, previous methods fail to address reasoning errors in intermediate steps, leading to accumulative errors. In this paper, we propose Deductive Beam Search (DBS), which seamlessly integrates CoT and deductive reasoning with step-wise beam search for LLMs. Our approach deploys a verifier, verifying the deducibility of a reasoning step and its premises, thus alleviating the error accumulation. Furthermore, we introduce a scalable and labor-free data construction method to amplify our model's verification capabilities. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach significantly enhances the base performance of LLMs of various scales (7B, 13B, 70B, and ChatGPT) across 8 reasoning datasets from 3 diverse reasoning genres, including arithmetic, commonsense, and symbolic. Moreover, our analysis proves DBS's capability of detecting diverse and subtle reasoning errors and robustness on different model scales.

Can LLMs Learn to Map the World from Local Descriptions?Sirui Xia, Aili Chen, Xintao Wang et al.
Recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated strong capabilities in tasks such as code and mathematics. However, their potential to internalize structured spatial knowledge remains underexplored. This study investigates whether LLMs, grounded in locally relative human observations, can construct coherent global spatial cognition by integrating fragmented relational descriptions. We focus on two core aspects of spatial cognition: spatial perception, where models infer consistent global layouts from local positional relationships, and spatial navigation, where models learn road connectivity from trajectory data and plan optimal paths between unconnected locations. Experiments conducted in a simulated urban environment demonstrate that LLMs not only generalize to unseen spatial relationships between points of interest (POIs) but also exhibit latent representations aligned with real-world spatial distributions. Furthermore, LLMs can learn road connectivity from trajectory descriptions, enabling accurate path planning and dynamic spatial awareness during navigation.

MCiteBench: A Multimodal Benchmark for Generating Text with CitationsCaiyu Hu, Yikai Zhang, Tinghui Zhu et al.
Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have advanced in integrating diverse modalities but frequently suffer from hallucination. A promising solution to mitigate this issue is to generate text with citations, providing a transparent chain for verification. However, existing work primarily focuses on generating citations for text-only content, leaving the challenges of multimodal scenarios largely unexplored. In this paper, we introduce MCiteBench, the first benchmark designed to assess the ability of MLLMs to generate text with citations in multimodal contexts. Our benchmark comprises data derived from academic papers and review-rebuttal interactions, featuring diverse information sources and multimodal content. Experimental results reveal that MLLMs struggle to ground their outputs reliably when handling multimodal input. Further analysis uncovers a systematic modality bias and reveals how models internally rely on different sources when generating citations, offering insights into model behavior and guiding future directions for multimodal citation tasks.
