Egocentric Auditory Attention Localization in Conversations

Fiona Ryan, Hao Jiang, Abhinav Shukla et al. · gatech

In a noisy conversation environment such as a dinner party, people often exhibit selective auditory attention, or the ability to focus on a particular speaker while tuning out others. Recognizing who somebody is listening to in a conversation is essential for developing technologies that can understand social behavior and devices that can augment human hearing by amplifying particular sound sources. The computer vision and audio research communities have made great strides towards recognizing sound sources and speakers in scenes. In this work, we take a step further by focusing on the problem of localizing auditory attention targets in egocentric video, or detecting who in a camera wearer's field of view they are listening to. To tackle the new and challenging Selective Auditory Attention Localization problem, we propose an end-to-end deep learning approach that uses egocentric video and multichannel audio to predict the heatmap of the camera wearer's auditory attention. Our approach leverages spatiotemporal audiovisual features and holistic reasoning about the scene to make predictions, and outperforms a set of baselines on a challenging multi-speaker conversation dataset. Chat2Map: Efficient Scene Mapping from Multi-Ego Conversations

Sagnik Majumder, Hao Jiang, Pierre Moulon et al.

Can conversational videos captured from multiple egocentric viewpoints reveal the map of a scene in a cost-efficient way? We seek to answer this question by proposing a new problem: efficiently building the map of a previously unseen 3D environment by exploiting shared information in the egocentric audio-visual observations of participants in a natural conversation. Our hypothesis is that as multiple people ("egos") move in a scene and talk among themselves, they receive rich audio-visual cues that can help uncover the unseen areas of the scene. Given the high cost of continuously processing egocentric visual streams, we further explore how to actively coordinate the sampling of visual information, so as to minimize redundancy and reduce power use. To that end, we present an audio-visual deep reinforcement learning approach that works with our shared scene mapper to selectively turn on the camera to efficiently chart out the space. We evaluate the approach using a state-of-the-art audio-visual simulator for 3D scenes as well as real-world video. Our model outperforms previous state-of-the-art mapping methods, and achieves an excellent cost-accuracy tradeoff. Project: http://vision.cs.utexas.edu/projects/chat2map.

Solving Richly Constrained Reinforcement Learning through State Augmentation and Reward Penalties

Hao Jiang, Tien Mai, Pradeep Varakantham et al.

Constrained Reinforcement Learning has been employed to enforce safety constraints on policy through the use of expected cost constraints. The key challenge is in handling expected cost accumulated using the policy and not just in a single step. Existing methods have developed innovative ways of converting this cost constraint over entire policy to constraints over local decisions (at each time step). While such approaches have provided good solutions with regards to objective, they can either be overly aggressive or conservative with respect to costs. This is owing to use of estimates for "future" or "backward" costs in local cost constraints. To that end, we provide an equivalent unconstrained formulation to constrained RL that has an augmented state space and reward penalties. This intuitive formulation is general and has interesting theoretical properties. More importantly, this provides a new paradigm for solving constrained RL problems effectively. As we show in our experimental results, we are able to outperform leading approaches on multiple benchmark problems from literature.

Optimizing Ride-Pooling Operations with Extended Pickup and Drop-Off Flexibility

Hao Jiang, Yixing Xu, Pradeep Varakantham

The Ride-Pool Matching Problem (RMP) is central to on-demand ride-pooling services, where vehicles must be matched with multiple requests while adhering to service constraints such as pickup delays, detour limits, and vehicle capacity. Most existing RMP solutions assume passengers are picked up and dropped off at their original locations, neglecting the potential for passengers to walk to nearby spots to meet vehicles. This assumption restricts the optimization potential in ride-pooling operations. In this paper, we propose a novel matching method that incorporates extended pickup and drop-off areas for passengers. We first design a tree-based approach to efficiently generate feasible matches between passengers and vehicles. Next, we optimize vehicle routes to cover all designated pickup and drop-off locations while minimizing total travel distance. Finally, we employ dynamic assignment strategies to achieve optimal matching outcomes. Experiments on city-scale taxi datasets demonstrate that our method improves the number of served requests by up to 13\% and average travel distance by up to 21\% compared to leading existing solutions, underscoring the potential of leveraging passenger mobility to significantly enhance ride-pooling service efficiency.

DiffVLA++: Bridging Cognitive Reasoning and End-to-End Driving through Metric-Guided Alignment

Yu Gao, Anqing Jiang, Yiru Wang et al.

Conventional end-to-end (E2E) driving models are effective at generating physically plausible trajectories, but often fail to generalize to long-tail scenarios due to the lack of essential world knowledge to understand and reason about surrounding environments. In contrast, Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models leverage world knowledge to handle challenging cases, but their limited 3D reasoning capability can lead to physically infeasible actions. In this work we introduce DiffVLA++, an enhanced autonomous driving framework that explicitly bridges cognitive reasoning and E2E planning through metric-guided alignment. First, we build a VLA module directly generating semantically grounded driving trajectories. Second, we design an E2E module with a dense trajectory vocabulary that ensures physical feasibility. Third, and most critically, we introduce a metric-guided trajectory scorer that guides and aligns the outputs of the VLA and E2E modules, thereby integrating their complementary strengths. The experiment on the ICCV 2025 Autonomous Grand Challenge leaderboard shows that DiffVLA++ achieves EPDMS of 49.12.

Egocentric Deep Multi-Channel Audio-Visual Active Speaker Localization

Hao Jiang, Calvin Murdock, Vamsi Krishna Ithapu

Augmented reality devices have the potential to enhance human perception and enable other assistive functionalities in complex conversational environments. Effectively capturing the audio-visual context necessary for understanding these social interactions first requires detecting and localizing the voice activities of the device wearer and the surrounding people. These tasks are challenging due to their egocentric nature: the wearer's head motion may cause motion blur, surrounding people may appear in difficult viewing angles, and there may be occlusions, visual clutter, audio noise, and bad lighting. Under these conditions, previous state-of-the-art active speaker detection methods do not give satisfactory results. Instead, we tackle the problem from a new setting using both video and multi-channel microphone array audio. We propose a novel end-to-end deep learning approach that is able to give robust voice activity detection and localization results. In contrast to previous methods, our method localizes active speakers from all possible directions on the sphere, even outside the camera's field of view, while simultaneously detecting the device wearer's own voice activity. Our experiments show that the proposed method gives superior results, can run in real time, and is robust against noise and clutter.
