Leveraging an Efficient and Semantic Location Embedding to Seek New Ports of Bike Share Services

Yuan Wang, Chenwei Wang, Yinan Ling et al.

For short distance traveling in crowded urban areas, bike share services are becoming popular owing to the flexibility and convenience. To expand the service coverage, one of the key tasks is to seek new service ports, which requires to well understand the underlying features of the existing service ports. In this paper, we propose a new model, named for Efficient and Semantic Location Embedding (ESLE), which carries both geospatial and semantic information of the geo-locations. To generate ESLE, we first train a multi-label model with a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) by feeding the static map-tile images and then extract location embedding vectors from the model. Compared to most recent relevant literature, ESLE is not only much cheaper in computation, but also easier to interpret via a systematic semantic analysis. Finally, we apply ESLE to seek new service ports for NTT DOCOMO's bike share services operated in Japan. The initial results demonstrate the effectiveness of ESLE, and provide a few insights that might be difficult to discover by using the conventional approaches.

PointIT: A Fast Tracking Framework Based on 3D Instance Segmentation

Yuan Wang, Yang Yu, Ming Liu

Recently most popular tracking frameworks focus on 2D image sequences. They seldom track the 3D object in point clouds. In this paper, we propose PointIT, a fast, simple tracking method based on 3D on-road instance segmentation. Firstly, we transform 3D LiDAR data into the spherical image with the size of 64 x 512 x 4 and feed it into instance segment model to get the predicted instance mask for each class. Then we use MobileNet as our primary encoder instead of the original ResNet to reduce the computational complexity. Finally, we extend the Sort algorithm with this instance framework to realize tracking in the 3D LiDAR point cloud data. The model is trained on the spherical images dataset with the corresponding instance label masks which are provided by KITTI 3D Object Track dataset. According to the experiment results, our network can achieve on Average Precision (AP) of 0.617 and the performance of multi-tracking task has also been improved.

PointSeg: Real-Time Semantic Segmentation Based on 3D LiDAR Point Cloud

Yuan Wang, Tianyue Shi, Peng Yun et al.

In this paper, we propose PointSeg, a real-time end-to-end semantic segmentation method for road-objects based on spherical images. We take the spherical image, which is transformed from the 3D LiDAR point clouds, as input of the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to predict the point-wise semantic map. To make PointSeg applicable on a mobile system, we build the model based on the light-weight network, SqueezeNet, with several improvements. It maintains a good balance between memory cost and prediction performance. Our model is trained on spherical images and label masks projected from the KITTI 3D object detection dataset. Experiments show that PointSeg can achieve competitive accuracy with 90fps on a single GPU 1080ti. which makes it quite compatible for autonomous driving applications.

State Space LSTM Models with Particle MCMC Inference

Xun Zheng, Manzil Zaheer, Amr Ahmed et al.

Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) is one of the most powerful sequence models. Despite the strong performance, however, it lacks the nice interpretability as in state space models. In this paper, we present a way to combine the best of both worlds by introducing State Space LSTM (SSL) models that generalizes the earlier work \cite{zaheer2017latent} of combining topic models with LSTM. However, unlike \cite{zaheer2017latent}, we do not make any factorization assumptions in our inference algorithm. We present an efficient sampler based on sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) method that draws from the joint posterior directly. Experimental results confirms the superiority and stability of this SMC inference algorithm on a variety of domains.
