Detecting Everything in the Open World: Towards Universal Object Detection

In this paper, we formally address universal object detection, which aims to detect every scene and predict every category. The dependence on human annotations, the limited visual information, and the novel categories in the open world severely restrict the universality of traditional detectors. We propose UniDetector, a universal object detector that has the ability to recognize enormous categories in the open world. The critical points for the universality of UniDetector are: 1) it leverages images of multiple sources and heterogeneous label spaces for training through the alignment of image and text spaces, which guarantees sufficient information for universal representations. 2) it generalizes to the open world easily while keeping the balance between seen and unseen classes, thanks to abundant information from both vision and language modalities. 3) it further promotes the generalization ability to novel categories through our proposed decoupling training manner and probability calibration. These contributions allow UniDetector to detect over 7k categories, the largest measurable category size so far, with only about 500 classes participating in training. Our UniDetector behaves the strong zero-shot generalization ability on large-vocabulary datasets like LVIS, ImageNetBoxes, and VisualGenome - it surpasses the traditional supervised baselines by more than 4\% on average without seeing any corresponding images. On 13 public detection datasets with various scenes, UniDetector also achieves state-of-the-art performance with only a 3\% amount of training data.

Self-Supervised Learning via Maximum Entropy Coding

A mainstream type of current self-supervised learning methods pursues a general-purpose representation that can be well transferred to downstream tasks, typically by optimizing on a given pretext task such as instance discrimination. In this work, we argue that existing pretext tasks inevitably introduce biases into the learned representation, which in turn leads to biased transfer performance on various downstream tasks. To cope with this issue, we propose Maximum Entropy Coding (MEC), a more principled objective that explicitly optimizes on the structure of the representation, so that the learned representation is less biased and thus generalizes better to unseen downstream tasks. Inspired by the principle of maximum entropy in information theory, we hypothesize that a generalizable representation should be the one that admits the maximum entropy among all plausible representations. To make the objective end-to-end trainable, we propose to leverage the minimal coding length in lossy data coding as a computationally tractable surrogate for the entropy, and further derive a scalable reformulation of the objective that allows fast computation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that MEC learns a more generalizable representation than previous methods based on specific pretext tasks. It achieves state-of-the-art performance consistently on various downstream tasks, including not only ImageNet linear probe, but also semi-supervised classification, object detection, instance segmentation, and object tracking. Interestingly, we show that existing batch-wise and feature-wise self-supervised objectives could be seen equivalent to low-order approximations of MEC. Hybrid Physical Metric For 6-DoF Grasp Pose Detection

6-DoF grasp pose detection of multi-grasp and multi-object is a challenge task in the field of intelligent robot. To imitate human reasoning ability for grasping objects, data driven methods are widely studied. With the introduction of large-scale datasets, we discover that a single physical metric usually generates several discrete levels of grasp confidence scores, which cannot finely distinguish millions of grasp poses and leads to inaccurate prediction results. In this paper, we propose a hybrid physical metric to solve this evaluation insufficiency. First, we define a novel metric is based on the force-closure metric, supplemented by the measurement of the object flatness, gravity and collision. Second, we leverage this hybrid physical metric to generate elaborate confidence scores. Third, to learn the new confidence scores effectively, we design a multi-resolution network called Flatness Gravity Collision GraspNet (FGC-GraspNet). FGC-GraspNet proposes a multi-resolution features learning architecture for multiple tasks and introduces a new joint loss function that enhances the average precision of the grasp detection. The network evaluation and adequate real robot experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our hybrid physical metric and FGC-GraspNet. Identity-Seeking Self-Supervised Representation Learning for Generalizable Person Re-identification

This paper aims to learn a domain-generalizable (DG) person re-identification (ReID) representation from large-scale videos \textbf{without any annotation}. Prior DG ReID methods employ limited labeled data for training due to the high cost of annotation, which restricts further advances. To overcome the barriers of data and annotation, we propose to utilize large-scale unsupervised data for training. The key issue lies in how to mine identity information. To this end, we propose an Identity-seeking Self-supervised Representation learning (ISR) method. ISR constructs positive pairs from inter-frame images by modeling the instance association as a maximum-weight bipartite matching problem. A reliability-guided contrastive loss is further presented to suppress the adverse impact of noisy positive pairs, ensuring that reliable positive pairs dominate the learning process. The training cost of ISR scales approximately linearly with the data size, making it feasible to utilize large-scale data for training. The learned representation exhibits superior generalization ability. \textbf{Without human annotation and fine-tuning, ISR achieves 87.0\% Rank-1 on Market-1501 and 56.4\% Rank-1 on MSMT17}, outperforming the best supervised domain-generalizable method by 5.0\% and 19.5\%, respectively. In the pre-training$\rightarrow$fine-tuning scenario, ISR achieves state-of-the-art performance, with 88.4\% Rank-1 on MSMT17. The code is at \url{https://github.com/dcp15/ISR_ICCV2023_Oral}.

Uni3DETR: Unified 3D Detection Transformer

Existing point cloud based 3D detectors are designed for the particular scene, either indoor or outdoor ones. Because of the substantial differences in object distribution and point density within point clouds collected from various environments, coupled with the intricate nature of 3D metrics, there is still a lack of a unified network architecture that can accommodate diverse scenes. In this paper, we propose Uni3DETR, a unified 3D detector that addresses indoor and outdoor 3D detection within the same framework. Specifically, we employ the detection transformer with point-voxel interaction for object prediction, which leverages voxel features and points for cross-attention and behaves resistant to the discrepancies from data. We then propose the mixture of query points, which sufficiently exploits global information for dense small-range indoor scenes and local information for large-range sparse outdoor ones. Furthermore, our proposed decoupled IoU provides an easy-to-optimize training target for localization by disentangling the xy and z space. Extensive experiments validate that Uni3DETR exhibits excellent performance consistently on both indoor and outdoor 3D detection. In contrast to previous specialized detectors, which may perform well on some particular datasets but suffer a substantial degradation on different scenes, Uni3DETR demonstrates the strong generalization ability under heterogeneous conditions (Fig. 1). GraphCSPN: Geometry-Aware Depth Completion via Dynamic GCNs

Image guided depth completion aims to recover per-pixel dense depth maps from sparse depth measurements with the help of aligned color images, which has a wide range of applications from robotics to autonomous driving. However, the 3D nature of sparse-to-dense depth completion has not been fully explored by previous methods. In this work, we propose a Graph Convolution based Spatial Propagation Network (GraphCSPN) as a general approach for depth completion. First, unlike previous methods, we leverage convolution neural networks as well as graph neural networks in a complementary way for geometric representation learning. In addition, the proposed networks explicitly incorporate learnable geometric constraints to regularize the propagation process performed in three-dimensional space rather than in two-dimensional plane. Furthermore, we construct the graph utilizing sequences of feature patches, and update it dynamically with an edge attention module during propagation, so as to better capture both the local neighboring features and global relationships over long distance. Extensive experiments on both indoor NYU-Depth-v2 and outdoor KITTI datasets demonstrate that our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance, especially when compared in the case of using only a few propagation steps. Noisy Boundaries: Lemon or Lemonade for Semi-supervised Instance Segmentation?

Current instance segmentation methods rely heavily on pixel-level annotated images. The huge cost to obtain such fully-annotated images restricts the dataset scale and limits the performance. In this paper, we formally address semi-supervised instance segmentation, where unlabeled images are employed to boost the performance. We construct a framework for semi-supervised instance segmentation by assigning pixel-level pseudo labels. Under this framework, we point out that noisy boundaries associated with pseudo labels are double-edged. We propose to exploit and resist them in a unified manner simultaneously: 1) To combat the negative effects of noisy boundaries, we propose a noise-tolerant mask head by leveraging low-resolution features. 2) To enhance the positive impacts, we introduce a boundary-preserving map for learning detailed information within boundary-relevant regions. We evaluate our approach by extensive experiments. It behaves extraordinarily, outperforming the supervised baseline by a large margin, more than 6% on Cityscapes, 7% on COCO and 4.5% on BDD100k. On Cityscapes, our method achieves comparable performance by utilizing only 30% labeled images.

Reliability-Aware Prediction via Uncertainty Learning for Person Image Retrieval

Current person image retrieval methods have achieved great improvements in accuracy metrics. However, they rarely describe the reliability of the prediction. In this paper, we propose an Uncertainty-Aware Learning (UAL) method to remedy this issue. UAL aims at providing reliability-aware predictions by considering data uncertainty and model uncertainty simultaneously. Data uncertainty captures the ``noise" inherent in the sample, while model uncertainty depicts the model's confidence in the sample's prediction. Specifically, in UAL, (1) we propose a sampling-free data uncertainty learning method to adaptively assign weights to different samples during training, down-weighting the low-quality ambiguous samples. (2) we leverage the Bayesian framework to model the model uncertainty by assuming the parameters of the network follow a Bernoulli distribution. (3) the data uncertainty and the model uncertainty are jointly learned in a unified network, and they serve as two fundamental criteria for the reliability assessment: if a probe is high-quality (low data uncertainty) and the model is confident in the prediction of the probe (low model uncertainty), the final ranking will be assessed as reliable. Experiments under the risk-controlled settings and the multi-query settings show the proposed reliability assessment is effective. Our method also shows superior performance on three challenging benchmarks under the vanilla single query settings.

Generalizable Re-Identification from Videos with Cycle Association

In this paper, we are interested in learning a generalizable person re-identification (re-ID) representation from unlabeled videos. Compared with 1) the popular unsupervised re-ID setting where the training and test sets are typically under the same domain, and 2) the popular domain generalization (DG) re-ID setting where the training samples are labeled, our novel scenario combines their key challenges: the training samples are unlabeled, and collected form various domains which do no align with the test domain. In other words, we aim to learn a representation in an unsupervised manner and directly use the learned representation for re-ID in novel domains. To fulfill this goal, we make two main contributions: First, we propose Cycle Association (CycAs), a scalable self-supervised learning method for re-ID with low training complexity; and second, we construct a large-scale unlabeled re-ID dataset named LMP-video, tailored for the proposed method. Specifically, CycAs learns re-ID features by enforcing cycle consistency of instance association between temporally successive video frame pairs, and the training cost is merely linear to the data size, making large-scale training possible. On the other hand, the LMP-video dataset is extremely large, containing 50 million unlabeled person images cropped from over 10K Youtube videos, therefore is sufficient to serve as fertile soil for self-supervised learning. Trained on LMP-video, we show that CycAs learns good generalization towards novel domains. The achieved results sometimes even outperform supervised domain generalizable models. Remarkably, CycAs achieves 82.2% Rank-1 on Market-1501 and 49.0% Rank-1 on MSMT17 with zero human annotation, surpassing state-of-the-art supervised DG re-ID methods. Moreover, we also demonstrate the superiority of CycAs under the canonical unsupervised re-ID and the pretrain-and-finetune scenarios.

Portrait Interpretation and a Benchmark

We propose a task we name Portrait Interpretation and construct a dataset named Portrait250K for it. Current researches on portraits such as human attribute recognition and person re-identification have achieved many successes, but generally, they: 1) may lack mining the interrelationship between various tasks and the possible benefits it may bring; 2) design deep models specifically for each task, which is inefficient; 3) may be unable to cope with the needs of a unified model and comprehensive perception in actual scenes. In this paper, the proposed portrait interpretation recognizes the perception of humans from a new systematic perspective. We divide the perception of portraits into three aspects, namely Appearance, Posture, and Emotion, and design corresponding sub-tasks for each aspect. Based on the framework of multi-task learning, portrait interpretation requires a comprehensive description of static attributes and dynamic states of portraits. To invigorate research on this new task, we construct a new dataset that contains 250,000 images labeled with identity, gender, age, physique, height, expression, and posture of the whole body and arms. Our dataset is collected from 51 movies, hence covering extensive diversity. Furthermore, we focus on representation learning for portrait interpretation and propose a baseline that reflects our systematic perspective. We also propose an appropriate metric for this task. Our experimental results demonstrate that combining the tasks related to portrait interpretation can yield benefits. Code and dataset will be made public.

Diffusion Model Meets Non-Exemplar Class-Incremental Learning and Beyond

Non-exemplar class-incremental learning (NECIL) is to resist catastrophic forgetting without saving old class samples. Prior methodologies generally employ simple rules to generate features for replaying, suffering from large distribution gap between replayed features and real ones. To address the aforementioned issue, we propose a simple, yet effective \textbf{Diff}usion-based \textbf{F}eature \textbf{R}eplay (\textbf{DiffFR}) method for NECIL. First, to alleviate the limited representational capacity caused by fixing the feature extractor, we employ Siamese-based self-supervised learning for initial generalizable features. Second, we devise diffusion models to generate class-representative features highly similar to real features, which provides an effective way for exemplar-free knowledge memorization. Third, we introduce prototype calibration to direct the diffusion model's focus towards learning the distribution shapes of features, rather than the entire distribution. Extensive experiments on public datasets demonstrate significant performance gains of our DiffFR, outperforming the state-of-the-art NECIL methods by 3.0\% in average. Turbo your multi-modal classification with contrastive learning

Contrastive learning has become one of the most impressive approaches for multi-modal representation learning. However, previous multi-modal works mainly focused on cross-modal understanding, ignoring in-modal contrastive learning, which limits the representation of each modality. In this paper, we propose a novel contrastive learning strategy, called $Turbo$, to promote multi-modal understanding by joint in-modal and cross-modal contrastive learning. Specifically, multi-modal data pairs are sent through the forward pass twice with different hidden dropout masks to get two different representations for each modality. With these representations, we obtain multiple in-modal and cross-modal contrastive objectives for training. Finally, we combine the self-supervised Turbo with the supervised multi-modal classification and demonstrate its effectiveness on two audio-text classification tasks, where the state-of-the-art performance is achieved on a speech emotion recognition benchmark dataset.

Towards Real-Time Multi-Object Tracking

Modern multiple object tracking (MOT) systems usually follow the \emph{tracking-by-detection} paradigm. It has 1) a detection model for target localization and 2) an appearance embedding model for data association. Having the two models separately executed might lead to efficiency problems, as the running time is simply a sum of the two steps without investigating potential structures that can be shared between them. Existing research efforts on real-time MOT usually focus on the association step, so they are essentially real-time association methods but not real-time MOT system. In this paper, we propose an MOT system that allows target detection and appearance embedding to be learned in a shared model. Specifically, we incorporate the appearance embedding model into a single-shot detector, such that the model can simultaneously output detections and the corresponding embeddings. We further propose a simple and fast association method that works in conjunction with the joint model. In both components the computation cost is significantly reduced compared with former MOT systems, resulting in a neat and fast baseline for future follow-ups on real-time MOT algorithm design. To our knowledge, this work reports the first (near) real-time MOT system, with a running speed of 22 to 40 FPS depending on the input resolution. Meanwhile, its tracking accuracy is comparable to the state-of-the-art trackers embodying separate detection and embedding (SDE) learning ($64.4\%$ MOTA \vs $66.1\%$ MOTA on MOT-16 challenge). Semi-Supervised Semantic Segmentation Based on Pseudo-Labels: A Survey

Semantic segmentation is an important and popular research area in computer vision that focuses on classifying pixels in an image based on their semantics. However, supervised deep learning requires large amounts of data to train models and the process of labeling images pixel by pixel is time-consuming and laborious. This review aims to provide a first comprehensive and organized overview of the state-of-the-art research results on pseudo-label methods in the field of semi-supervised semantic segmentation, which we categorize from different perspectives and present specific methods for specific application areas. In addition, we explore the application of pseudo-label technology in medical and remote-sensing image segmentation. Finally, we also propose some feasible future research directions to address the existing challenges.

OV-Uni3DETR: Towards Unified Open-Vocabulary 3D Object Detection via Cycle-Modality Propagation

In the current state of 3D object detection research, the severe scarcity of annotated 3D data, substantial disparities across different data modalities, and the absence of a unified architecture, have impeded the progress towards the goal of universality. In this paper, we propose \textbf{OV-Uni3DETR}, a unified open-vocabulary 3D detector via cycle-modality propagation. Compared with existing 3D detectors, OV-Uni3DETR offers distinct advantages: 1) Open-vocabulary 3D detection: During training, it leverages various accessible data, especially extensive 2D detection images, to boost training diversity. During inference, it can detect both seen and unseen classes. 2) Modality unifying: It seamlessly accommodates input data from any given modality, effectively addressing scenarios involving disparate modalities or missing sensor information, thereby supporting test-time modality switching. 3) Scene unifying: It provides a unified multi-modal model architecture for diverse scenes collected by distinct sensors. Specifically, we propose the cycle-modality propagation, aimed at propagating knowledge bridging 2D and 3D modalities, to support the aforementioned functionalities. 2D semantic knowledge from large-vocabulary learning guides novel class discovery in the 3D domain, and 3D geometric knowledge provides localization supervision for 2D detection images. OV-Uni3DETR achieves the state-of-the-art performance on various scenarios, surpassing existing methods by more than 6\% on average. Its performance using only RGB images is on par with or even surpasses that of previous point cloud based methods. Code and pre-trained models will be released later.

One for All: Multi-Domain Joint Training for Point Cloud Based 3D Object Detection

The current trend in computer vision is to utilize one universal model to address all various tasks. Achieving such a universal model inevitably requires incorporating multi-domain data for joint training to learn across multiple problem scenarios. In point cloud based 3D object detection, however, such multi-domain joint training is highly challenging, because large domain gaps among point clouds from different datasets lead to the severe domain-interference problem. In this paper, we propose \textbf{OneDet3D}, a universal one-for-all model that addresses 3D detection across different domains, including diverse indoor and outdoor scenes, within the \emph{same} framework and only \emph{one} set of parameters. We propose the domain-aware partitioning in scatter and context, guided by a routing mechanism, to address the data interference issue, and further incorporate the text modality for a language-guided classification to unify the multi-dataset label spaces and mitigate the category interference issue. The fully sparse structure and anchor-free head further accommodate point clouds with significant scale disparities. Extensive experiments demonstrate the strong universal ability of OneDet3D to utilize only one trained model for addressing almost all 3D object detection tasks.

Map Optical Properties to Subwavelength Structures Directly via a Diffusion Model

Subwavelength photonic structures and metamaterials provide revolutionary approaches for controlling light. The inverse design methods proposed for these subwavelength structures are vital to the development of new photonic devices. However, most of the existing inverse design methods cannot realize direct mapping from optical properties to photonic structures but instead rely on forward simulation methods to perform iterative optimization. In this work, we exploit the powerful generative abilities of artificial intelligence (AI) and propose a practical inverse design method based on latent diffusion models. Our method maps directly the optical properties to structures without the requirement of forward simulation and iterative optimization. Here, the given optical properties can work as "prompts" and guide the constructed model to correctly "draw" the required photonic structures. Experiments show that our direct mapping-based inverse design method can generate subwavelength photonic structures at high fidelity while following the given optical properties. This may change the method used for optical design and greatly accelerate the research on new photonic devices.

Adaptive Spatial Augmentation for Semi-supervised Semantic Segmentation

In semi-supervised semantic segmentation (SSSS), data augmentation plays a crucial role in the weak-to-strong consistency regularization framework, as it enhances diversity and improves model generalization. Recent strong augmentation methods have primarily focused on intensity-based perturbations, which have minimal impact on the semantic masks. In contrast, spatial augmentations like translation and rotation have long been acknowledged for their effectiveness in supervised semantic segmentation tasks, but they are often ignored in SSSS. In this work, we demonstrate that spatial augmentation can also contribute to model training in SSSS, despite generating inconsistent masks between the weak and strong augmentations. Furthermore, recognizing the variability among images, we propose an adaptive augmentation strategy that dynamically adjusts the augmentation for each instance based on entropy. Extensive experiments show that our proposed Adaptive Spatial Augmentation (\textbf{ASAug}) can be integrated as a pluggable module, consistently improving the performance of existing methods and achieving state-of-the-art results on benchmark datasets such as PASCAL VOC 2012, Cityscapes, and COCO.

Combating Noise: Semi-supervised Learning by Region Uncertainty Quantification

Semi-supervised learning aims to leverage a large amount of unlabeled data for performance boosting. Existing works primarily focus on image classification. In this paper, we delve into semi-supervised learning for object detection, where labeled data are more labor-intensive to collect. Current methods are easily distracted by noisy regions generated by pseudo labels. To combat the noisy labeling, we propose noise-resistant semi-supervised learning by quantifying the region uncertainty. We first investigate the adverse effects brought by different forms of noise associated with pseudo labels. Then we propose to quantify the uncertainty of regions by identifying the noise-resistant properties of regions over different strengths. By importing the region uncertainty quantification and promoting multipeak probability distribution output, we introduce uncertainty into training and further achieve noise-resistant learning. Experiments on both PASCAL VOC and MS COCO demonstrate the extraordinary performance of our method.

Sequence Model with Self-Adaptive Sliding Window for Efficient Spoken Document Segmentation

Transcripts generated by automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems for spoken documents lack structural annotations such as paragraphs, significantly reducing their readability. Automatically predicting paragraph segmentation for spoken documents may both improve readability and downstream NLP performance such as summarization and machine reading comprehension. We propose a sequence model with self-adaptive sliding window for accurate and efficient paragraph segmentation. We also propose an approach to exploit phonetic information, which significantly improves robustness of spoken document segmentation to ASR errors. Evaluations are conducted on the English Wiki-727K document segmentation benchmark, a Chinese Wikipedia-based document segmentation dataset we created, and an in-house Chinese spoken document dataset. Our proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art (SOTA) model based on the same BERT-Base, increasing segmentation F1 on the English benchmark by 4.2 points and on Chinese datasets by 4.3-10.1 points, while reducing inference time to less than 1/6 of inference time of the current SOTA.

AdaZoom: Adaptive Zoom Network for Multi-Scale Object Detection in Large Scenes

Detection in large-scale scenes is a challenging problem due to small objects and extreme scale variation. It is essential to focus on the image regions of small objects. In this paper, we propose a novel Adaptive Zoom (AdaZoom) network as a selective magnifier with flexible shape and focal length to adaptively zoom the focus regions for object detection. Based on policy gradient, we construct a reinforcement learning framework for focus region generation, with the reward formulated by object distributions. The scales and aspect ratios of the generated regions are adaptive to the scales and distribution of objects inside. We apply variable magnification according to the scale of the region for adaptive multi-scale detection. We further propose collaborative training to complementarily promote the performance of AdaZoom and the detection network. To validate the effectiveness, we conduct extensive experiments on VisDrone2019, UAVDT, and DOTA datasets. The experiments show AdaZoom brings a consistent and significant improvement over different detection networks, achieving state-of-the-art performance on these datasets, especially outperforming the existing methods by AP of 4.64% on Vis-Drone2019.

A^2-FPN: Attention Aggregation based Feature Pyramid Network for Instance Segmentation

Learning pyramidal feature representations is crucial for recognizing object instances at different scales. Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) is the classic architecture to build a feature pyramid with high-level semantics throughout. However, intrinsic defects in feature extraction and fusion inhibit FPN from further aggregating more discriminative features. In this work, we propose Attention Aggregation based Feature Pyramid Network (A^2-FPN), to improve multi-scale feature learning through attention-guided feature aggregation. In feature extraction, it extracts discriminative features by collecting-distributing multi-level global context features, and mitigates the semantic information loss due to drastically reduced channels. In feature fusion, it aggregates complementary information from adjacent features to generate location-wise reassembly kernels for content-aware sampling, and employs channel-wise reweighting to enhance the semantic consistency before element-wise addition. A^2-FPN shows consistent gains on different instance segmentation frameworks. By replacing FPN with A^2-FPN in Mask R-CNN, our model boosts the performance by 2.1% and 1.6% mask AP when using ResNet-50 and ResNet-101 as backbone, respectively. Moreover, A^2-FPN achieves an improvement of 2.0% and 1.4% mask AP when integrated into the strong baselines such as Cascade Mask R-CNN and Hybrid Task Cascade.

Data-Uncertainty Guided Multi-Phase Learning for Semi-Supervised Object Detection

In this paper, we delve into semi-supervised object detection where unlabeled images are leveraged to break through the upper bound of fully-supervised object detection models. Previous semi-supervised methods based on pseudo labels are severely degenerated by noise and prone to overfit to noisy labels, thus are deficient in learning different unlabeled knowledge well. To address this issue, we propose a data-uncertainty guided multi-phase learning method for semi-supervised object detection. We comprehensively consider divergent types of unlabeled images according to their difficulty levels, utilize them in different phases and ensemble models from different phases together to generate ultimate results. Image uncertainty guided easy data selection and region uncertainty guided RoI Re-weighting are involved in multi-phase learning and enable the detector to concentrate on more certain knowledge. Through extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC and MS COCO, we demonstrate that our method behaves extraordinarily compared to baseline approaches and outperforms them by a large margin, more than 3% on VOC and 2% on COCO.

CycAs: Self-supervised Cycle Association for Learning Re-identifiable Descriptions

This paper proposes a self-supervised learning method for the person re-identification (re-ID) problem, where existing unsupervised methods usually rely on pseudo labels, such as those from video tracklets or clustering. A potential drawback of using pseudo labels is that errors may accumulate and it is challenging to estimate the number of pseudo IDs. We introduce a different unsupervised method that allows us to learn pedestrian embeddings from raw videos, without resorting to pseudo labels. The goal is to construct a self-supervised pretext task that matches the person re-ID objective. Inspired by the \emph{data association} concept in multi-object tracking, we propose the \textbf{Cyc}le \textbf{As}sociation (\textbf{CycAs}) task: after performing data association between a pair of video frames forward and then backward, a pedestrian instance is supposed to be associated to itself. To fulfill this goal, the model must learn a meaningful representation that can well describe correspondences between instances in frame pairs. We adapt the discrete association process to a differentiable form, such that end-to-end training becomes feasible. Experiments are conducted in two aspects: We first compare our method with existing unsupervised re-ID methods on seven benchmarks and demonstrate CycAs' superiority. Then, to further validate the practical value of CycAs in real-world applications, we perform training on self-collected videos and report promising performance on standard test sets.

Softmax Dissection: Towards Understanding Intra- and Inter-class Objective for Embedding Learning

The softmax loss and its variants are widely used as objectives for embedding learning, especially in applications like face recognition. However, the intra- and inter-class objectives in the softmax loss are entangled, therefore a well-optimized inter-class objective leads to relaxation on the intra-class objective, and vice versa. In this paper, we propose to dissect the softmax loss into independent intra- and inter-class objective (D-Softmax). With D-Softmax as objective, we can have a clear understanding of both the intra- and inter-class objective, therefore it is straightforward to tune each part to the best state. Furthermore, we find the computation of the inter-class objective is redundant and propose two sampling-based variants of D-Softmax to reduce the computation cost. Training with regular-scale data, experiments in face verification show D-Softmax is favorably comparable to existing losses such as SphereFace and ArcFace. Training with massive-scale data, experiments show the fast variants of D-Softmax significantly accelerates the training process (such as 64x) with only a minor sacrifice in performance, outperforming existing acceleration methods of softmax in terms of both performance and efficiency.

CS-R-FCN: Cross-supervised Learning for Large-Scale Object Detection

Generic object detection is one of the most fundamental problems in computer vision, yet it is difficult to provide all the bounding-box-level annotations aiming at large-scale object detection for thousands of categories. In this paper, we present a novel cross-supervised learning pipeline for large-scale object detection, denoted as CS-R-FCN. First, we propose to utilize the data flow of image-level annotated images in the fully-supervised two-stage object detection framework, leading to cross-supervised learning combining bounding-box-level annotated data and image-level annotated data. Second, we introduce a semantic aggregation strategy utilizing the relationships among the cross-supervised categories to reduce the unreasonable mutual inhibition effects during the feature learning. Experimental results show that the proposed CS-R-FCN improves the mAP by a large margin compared to previous related works.

Intra-clip Aggregation for Video Person Re-identification

Video-based person re-identification has drawn massive attention in recent years due to its extensive applications in video surveillance. While deep learning-based methods have led to significant progress, these methods are limited by ineffectively using complementary information, which is blamed on necessary data augmentation in the training process. Data augmentation has been widely used to mitigate the over-fitting trap and improve the ability of network representation. However, the previous methods adopt image-based data augmentation scheme to individually process the input frames, which corrupts the complementary information between consecutive frames and causes performance degradation. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that our framework outperforms the most recent state-of-the-art methods. We also perform cross-dataset validation to prove the generality of our method.

Perceive Where to Focus: Learning Visibility-aware Part-level Features for Partial Person Re-identification

This paper considers a realistic problem in person re-identification (re-ID) task, i.e., partial re-ID. Under partial re-ID scenario, the images may contain a partial observation of a pedestrian. If we directly compare a partial pedestrian image with a holistic one, the extreme spatial misalignment significantly compromises the discriminative ability of the learned representation. We propose a Visibility-aware Part Model (VPM), which learns to perceive the visibility of regions through self-supervision. The visibility awareness allows VPM to extract region-level features and compare two images with focus on their shared regions (which are visible on both images). VPM gains two-fold benefit toward higher accuracy for partial re-ID. On the one hand, compared with learning a global feature, VPM learns region-level features and benefits from fine-grained information. On the other hand, with visibility awareness, VPM is capable to estimate the shared regions between two images and thus suppresses the spatial misalignment. Experimental results confirm that our method significantly improves the learned representation and the achieved accuracy is on par with the state of the art.

Linkage Based Face Clustering via Graph Convolution Network

In this paper, we present an accurate and scalable approach to the face clustering task. We aim at grouping a set of faces by their potential identities. We formulate this task as a link prediction problem: a link exists between two faces if they are of the same identity. The key idea is that we find the local context in the feature space around an instance (face) contains rich information about the linkage relationship between this instance and its neighbors. By constructing sub-graphs around each instance as input data, which depict the local context, we utilize the graph convolution network (GCN) to perform reasoning and infer the likelihood of linkage between pairs in the sub-graphs. Experiments show that our method is more robust to the complex distribution of faces than conventional methods, yielding favorably comparable results to state-of-the-art methods on standard face clustering benchmarks, and is scalable to large datasets. Furthermore, we show that the proposed method does not need the number of clusters as prior, is aware of noises and outliers, and can be extended to a multi-view version for more accurate clustering accuracy.

Intention Oriented Image Captions with Guiding Objects

Although existing image caption models can produce promising results using recurrent neural networks (RNNs), it is difficult to guarantee that an object we care about is contained in generated descriptions, for example in the case that the object is inconspicuous in the image. Problems become even harder when these objects did not appear in training stage. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for generating image captions with guiding objects (CGO). The CGO constrains the model to involve a human-concerned object when the object is in the image. CGO ensures that the object is in the generated description while maintaining fluency. Instead of generating the sequence from left to right, we start the description with a selected object and generate other parts of the sequence based on this object. To achieve this, we design a novel framework combining two LSTMs in opposite directions. We demonstrate the characteristics of our method on MSCOCO where we generate descriptions for each detected object in the images. With CGO, we can extend the ability of description to the objects being neglected in image caption labels and provide a set of more comprehensive and diverse descriptions for an image. CGO shows advantages when applied to the task of describing novel objects. We show experimental results on both MSCOCO and ImageNet datasets. Evaluations show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art models in the task with average F1 75.8, leading to better descriptions in terms of both content accuracy and fluency.

DeepDeblur: Fast one-step blurry face images restoration

We propose a very fast and effective one-step restoring method for blurry face images. In the last decades, many blind deblurring algorithms have been proposed to restore latent sharp images. However, these algorithms run slowly because of involving two steps: kernel estimation and following non-blind deconvolution or latent image estimation. Also they cannot handle face images in small size. Our proposed method restores sharp face images directly in one step using Convolutional Neural Network. Unlike previous deep learning involved methods that can only handle a single blur kernel at one time, our network is trained on totally random and numerous training sample pairs to deal with the variances due to different blur kernels in practice. A smoothness regularization as well as a facial regularization are added to keep facial identity information which is the key to face image applications. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed method can handle various blur kenels and achieve state-of-the-art results for small size blurry face images restoration. Moreover, the proposed method shows significant improvement in face recognition accuracy along with increasing running speed by more than 100 times.

Progressive Representation Adaptation for Weakly Supervised Object Localization

We address the problem of weakly supervised object localization where only image-level annotations are available for training object detectors. Numerous methods have been proposed to tackle this problem through mining object proposals. However, a substantial amount of noise in object proposals causes ambiguities for learning discriminative object models. Such approaches are sensitive to model initialization and often converge to undesirable local minimum solutions. In this paper, we propose to overcome these drawbacks by progressive representation adaptation with two main steps: 1) classification adaptation and 2) detection adaptation. In classification adaptation, we transfer a pre-trained network to a multi-label classification task for recognizing the presence of a certain object in an image. Through the classification adaptation step, the network learns discriminative representations that are specific to object categories of interest. In detection adaptation, we mine class-specific object proposals by exploiting two scoring strategies based on the adapted classification network. Class-specific proposal mining helps remove substantial noise from the background clutter and potential confusion from similar objects. We further refine these proposals using multiple instance learning and segmentation cues. Using these refined object bounding boxes, we fine-tune all the layer of the classification network and obtain a fully adapted detection network. We present detailed experimental validation on the PASCAL VOC and ILSVRC datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that our progressive representation adaptation algorithm performs favorably against the state-of-the-art methods.
