Visual Recipe Flow: A Dataset for Learning Visual State Changes of Objects with Recipe FlowsKeisuke Shirai, Atsushi Hashimoto, Taichi Nishimura et al.
We present a new multimodal dataset called Visual Recipe Flow, which enables us to learn each cooking action result in a recipe text. The dataset consists of object state changes and the workflow of the recipe text. The state change is represented as an image pair, while the workflow is represented as a recipe flow graph (r-FG). The image pairs are grounded in the r-FG, which provides the cross-modal relation. With our dataset, one can try a range of applications, from multimodal commonsense reasoning and procedural text generation.

Recipe Generation from Unsegmented Cooking VideosTaichi Nishimura, Atsushi Hashimoto, Yoshitaka Ushiku et al.
This paper tackles recipe generation from unsegmented cooking videos, a task that requires agents to (1) extract key events in completing the dish and (2) generate sentences for the extracted events. Our task is similar to dense video captioning (DVC), which aims at detecting events thoroughly and generating sentences for them. However, unlike DVC, in recipe generation, recipe story awareness is crucial, and a model should extract an appropriate number of events in the correct order and generate accurate sentences based on them. We analyze the output of the DVC model and confirm that although (1) several events are adoptable as a recipe story, (2) the generated sentences for such events are not grounded in the visual content. Based on this, we set our goal to obtain correct recipes by selecting oracle events from the output events and re-generating sentences for them. To achieve this, we propose a transformer-based multimodal recurrent approach of training an event selector and sentence generator for selecting oracle events from the DVC's events and generating sentences for them. In addition, we extend the model by including ingredients to generate more accurate recipes. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art DVC models. We also confirm that, by modeling the recipe in a story-aware manner, the proposed model outputs the appropriate number of events in the correct order.

Lighthouse: A User-Friendly Library for Reproducible Video Moment Retrieval and Highlight DetectionTaichi Nishimura, Shota Nakada, Hokuto Munakata et al.
We propose Lighthouse, a user-friendly library for reproducible video moment retrieval and highlight detection (MR-HD). Although researchers proposed various MR-HD approaches, the research community holds two main issues. The first is a lack of comprehensive and reproducible experiments across various methods, datasets, and video-text features. This is because no unified training and evaluation codebase covers multiple settings. The second is user-unfriendly design. Because previous works use different libraries, researchers set up individual environments. In addition, most works release only the training codes, requiring users to implement the whole inference process of MR-HD. Lighthouse addresses these issues by implementing a unified reproducible codebase that includes six models, three features, and five datasets. In addition, it provides an inference API and web demo to make these methods easily accessible for researchers and developers. Our experiments demonstrate that Lighthouse generally reproduces the reported scores in the reference papers. The code is available at https://github.com/line/lighthouse.

Exo2EgoDVC: Dense Video Captioning of Egocentric Procedural Activities Using Web Instructional VideosTakehiko Ohkawa, Takuma Yagi, Taichi Nishimura et al.
We propose a novel benchmark for cross-view knowledge transfer of dense video captioning, adapting models from web instructional videos with exocentric views to an egocentric view. While dense video captioning (predicting time segments and their captions) is primarily studied with exocentric videos (e.g., YouCook2), benchmarks with egocentric videos are restricted due to data scarcity. To overcome the limited video availability, transferring knowledge from abundant exocentric web videos is demanded as a practical approach. However, learning the correspondence between exocentric and egocentric views is difficult due to their dynamic view changes. The web videos contain shots showing either full-body or hand regions, while the egocentric view is constantly shifting. This necessitates the in-depth study of cross-view transfer under complex view changes. To this end, we first create a real-life egocentric dataset (EgoYC2) whose captions follow the definition of YouCook2 captions, enabling transfer learning between these datasets with access to their ground-truth. To bridge the view gaps, we propose a view-invariant learning method using adversarial training, which consists of pre-training and fine-tuning stages. Our experiments confirm the effectiveness of overcoming the view change problem and knowledge transfer to egocentric views. Our benchmark pushes the study of cross-view transfer into a new task domain of dense video captioning and envisions methodologies that describe egocentric videos in natural language.

Language-based Audio Moment RetrievalHokuto Munakata, Taichi Nishimura, Shota Nakada et al.
In this paper, we propose and design a new task called audio moment retrieval (AMR). Unlike conventional language-based audio retrieval tasks that search for short audio clips from an audio database, AMR aims to predict relevant moments in untrimmed long audio based on a text query. Given the lack of prior work in AMR, we first build a dedicated dataset, Clotho-Moment, consisting of large-scale simulated audio recordings with moment annotations. We then propose a DETR-based model, named Audio Moment DETR (AM-DETR), as a fundamental framework for AMR tasks. This model captures temporal dependencies within audio features, inspired by similar video moment retrieval tasks, thus surpassing conventional clip-level audio retrieval methods. Additionally, we provide manually annotated datasets to properly measure the effectiveness and robustness of our methods on real data. Experimental results show that AM-DETR, trained with Clotho-Moment, outperforms a baseline model that applies a clip-level audio retrieval method with a sliding window on all metrics, particularly improving Recall1@0.7 by 9.00 points. DETECLAP: Enhancing Audio-Visual Representation Learning with Object InformationShota Nakada, Taichi Nishimura, Hokuto Munakata et al.
Current audio-visual representation learning can capture rough object categories (e.g., ``animals'' and ``instruments''), but it lacks the ability to recognize fine-grained details, such as specific categories like ``dogs'' and ``flutes'' within animals and instruments. To address this issue, we introduce DETECLAP, a method to enhance audio-visual representation learning with object information. Our key idea is to introduce an audio-visual label prediction loss to the existing Contrastive Audio-Visual Masked AutoEncoder to enhance its object awareness. To avoid costly manual annotations, we prepare object labels from both audio and visual inputs using state-of-the-art language-audio models and object detectors. We evaluate the method of audio-visual retrieval and classification using the VGGSound and AudioSet20K datasets. Our method achieves improvements in recall@10 of +1.5% and +1.2% for audio-to-visual and visual-to-audio retrieval, respectively, and an improvement in accuracy of +0.6% for audio-visual classification.

Text-driven Affordance Learning from Egocentric VisionTomoya Yoshida, Shuhei Kurita, Taichi Nishimura et al.
Visual affordance learning is a key component for robots to understand how to interact with objects. Conventional approaches in this field rely on pre-defined objects and actions, falling short of capturing diverse interactions in realworld scenarios. The key idea of our approach is employing textual instruction, targeting various affordances for a wide range of objects. This approach covers both hand-object and tool-object interactions. We introduce text-driven affordance learning, aiming to learn contact points and manipulation trajectories from an egocentric view following textual instruction. In our task, contact points are represented as heatmaps, and the manipulation trajectory as sequences of coordinates that incorporate both linear and rotational movements for various manipulations. However, when we gather data for this task, manual annotations of these diverse interactions are costly. To this end, we propose a pseudo dataset creation pipeline and build a large pseudo-training dataset: TextAFF80K, consisting of over 80K instances of the contact points, trajectories, images, and text tuples. We extend existing referring expression comprehension models for our task, and experimental results show that our approach robustly handles multiple affordances, serving as a new standard for affordance learning in real-world scenarios.

BioVL-QR: Egocentric Biochemical Vision-and-Language Dataset Using Micro QR CodesTomohiro Nishimoto, Taichi Nishimura, Koki Yamamoto et al.
This paper introduces BioVL-QR, a biochemical vision-and-language dataset comprising 23 egocentric experiment videos, corresponding protocols, and vision-and-language alignments. A major challenge in understanding biochemical videos is detecting equipment, reagents, and containers because of the cluttered environment and indistinguishable objects. Previous studies assumed manual object annotation, which is costly and time-consuming. To address the issue, we focus on Micro QR Codes. However, detecting objects using only Micro QR Codes is still difficult due to blur and occlusion caused by object manipulation. To overcome this, we propose an object labeling method combining a Micro QR Code detector with an off-the-shelf hand object detector. As an application of the method and BioVL-QR, we tackled the task of localizing the procedural steps in an instructional video. Developing Vision-Language-Action Model from Egocentric VideosTomoya Yoshida, Shuhei Kurita, Taichi Nishimura et al.
Egocentric videos capture how humans manipulate objects and tools, providing diverse motion cues for learning object manipulation. Unlike the costly, expert-driven manual teleoperation commonly used in training Vision-Language-Action models (VLAs), egocentric videos offer a scalable alternative. However, prior studies that leverage such videos for training robot policies typically rely on auxiliary annotations, such as detailed hand-pose recordings. Consequently, it remains unclear whether VLAs can be trained directly from raw egocentric videos. In this work, we address this challenge by leveraging EgoScaler, a framework that extracts 6DoF object manipulation trajectories from egocentric videos without requiring auxiliary recordings. We apply EgoScaler to four large-scale egocentric video datasets and automatically refine noisy or incomplete trajectories, thereby constructing a new large-scale dataset for VLA pre-training. Our experiments with a state-of-the-art $π_0$ architecture in both simulated and real-robot environments yield three key findings: (i) pre-training on our dataset improves task success rates by over 20\% compared to training from scratch, (ii) the performance is competitive with that achieved using real-robot datasets, and (iii) combining our dataset with real-robot data yields further improvements. These results demonstrate that egocentric videos constitute a promising and scalable resource for advancing VLA research.

Generating 6DoF Object Manipulation Trajectories from Action Description in Egocentric VisionTomoya Yoshida, Shuhei Kurita, Taichi Nishimura et al.
Learning to use tools or objects in common scenes, particularly handling them in various ways as instructed, is a key challenge for developing interactive robots. Training models to generate such manipulation trajectories requires a large and diverse collection of detailed manipulation demonstrations for various objects, which is nearly unfeasible to gather at scale. In this paper, we propose a framework that leverages large-scale ego- and exo-centric video datasets -- constructed globally with substantial effort -- of Exo-Ego4D to extract diverse manipulation trajectories at scale. From these extracted trajectories with the associated textual action description, we develop trajectory generation models based on visual and point cloud-based language models. In the recently proposed egocentric vision-based in-a-quality trajectory dataset of HOT3D, we confirmed that our models successfully generate valid object trajectories, establishing a training dataset and baseline models for the novel task of generating 6DoF manipulation trajectories from action descriptions in egocentric vision.

CASTELLA: Long Audio Dataset with Captions and Temporal BoundariesHokuto Munakata, Takehiro Imamura, Taichi Nishimura et al.
We introduce CASTELLA, a human-annotated audio benchmark for the task of audio moment retrieval (AMR). Although AMR has various useful potential applications, there is still no established benchmark with real-world data. The early study of AMR trained the model with solely synthetic datasets. Moreover, the evaluation is based on annotated dataset of fewer than 100 samples. This resulted in less reliable reported performance. To ensure performance for applications in real-world environments, we present CASTELLA, a large-scale manually annotated AMR dataset. CASTELLA consists of 1,009, 213, and 640 audio recordings for train, valid, and test split, respectively, which is 24 times larger than the previous dataset. We also establish a baseline model for AMR using CASTELLA. Our experiments demonstrate that a model fine-tuned on CASTELLA after pre-training on the synthetic data outperformed a model trained solely on the synthetic data by 10.4 points in Recall1@0.7. Automatic Construction of a Large-Scale Corpus for Geoparsing Using Wikipedia HyperlinksKeyaki Ohno, Hirotaka Kameko, Keisuke Shirai et al.
Geoparsing is the task of estimating the latitude and longitude (coordinates) of location expressions in texts. Geoparsing must deal with the ambiguity of the expressions that indicate multiple locations with the same notation. For evaluating geoparsing systems, several corpora have been proposed in previous work. However, these corpora are small-scale and suffer from the coverage of location expressions on general domains. In this paper, we propose Wikipedia Hyperlink-based Location Linking (WHLL), a novel method to construct a large-scale corpus for geoparsing from Wikipedia articles. WHLL leverages hyperlinks in Wikipedia to annotate multiple location expressions with coordinates. With this method, we constructed the WHLL corpus, a new large-scale corpus for geoparsing. The WHLL corpus consists of 1.3M articles, each containing about 7.8 unique location expressions. 45.6% of location expressions are ambiguous and refer to more than one location with the same notation. In each article, location expressions of the article title and those hyperlinks to other articles are assigned with coordinates. By utilizing hyperlinks, we can accurately assign location expressions with coordinates even with ambiguous location expressions in the texts. Experimental results show that there remains room for improvement by disambiguating location expressions.

On the Audio Hallucinations in Large Audio-Video Language ModelsTaichi Nishimura, Shota Nakada, Masayoshi Kondo
Large audio-video language models can generate descriptions for both video and audio. However, they sometimes ignore audio content, producing audio descriptions solely reliant on visual information. This paper refers to this as audio hallucinations and analyzes them in large audio-video language models. We gather 1,000 sentences by inquiring about audio information and annotate them whether they contain hallucinations. If a sentence is hallucinated, we also categorize the type of hallucination. The results reveal that 332 sentences are hallucinated with distinct trends observed in nouns and verbs for each hallucination type. Based on this, we tackle a task of audio hallucination classification using pre-trained audio-text models in the zero-shot and fine-tuning settings. Our experimental results reveal that the zero-shot models achieve higher performance (52.2% in F1) than the random (40.3%) and the fine-tuning models achieve 87.9%, outperforming the zero-shot models.
