A Survey and Evaluation of Adversarial Attacks for Object Detection

Deep learning models achieve remarkable accuracy in computer vision tasks, yet remain vulnerable to adversarial examples--carefully crafted perturbations to input images that can deceive these models into making confident but incorrect predictions. This vulnerability pose significant risks in high-stakes applications such as autonomous vehicles, security surveillance, and safety-critical inspection systems. While the existing literature extensively covers adversarial attacks in image classification, comprehensive analyses of such attacks on object detection systems remain limited. This paper presents a novel taxonomic framework for categorizing adversarial attacks specific to object detection architectures, synthesizes existing robustness metrics, and provides a comprehensive empirical evaluation of state-of-the-art attack methodologies on popular object detection models, including both traditional detectors and modern detectors with vision-language pretraining. Through rigorous analysis of open-source attack implementations and their effectiveness across diverse detection architectures, we derive key insights into attack characteristics. Furthermore, we delineate critical research gaps and emerging challenges to guide future investigations in securing object detection systems against adversarial threats. Our findings establish a foundation for developing more robust detection models while highlighting the urgent need for standardized evaluation protocols in this rapidly evolving domain.

R1-Searcher++: Incentivizing the Dynamic Knowledge Acquisition of LLMs via Reinforcement Learning

Large Language Models (LLMs) are powerful but prone to hallucinations due to static knowledge. Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) helps by injecting external information, but current methods often are costly, generalize poorly, or ignore the internal knowledge of the model. In this paper, we introduce R1-Searcher++, a novel framework designed to train LLMs to adaptively leverage both internal and external knowledge sources. R1-Searcher++ employs a two-stage training strategy: an initial SFT Cold-start phase for preliminary format learning, followed by RL for Dynamic Knowledge Acquisition. The RL stage uses outcome-supervision to encourage exploration, incorporates a reward mechanism for internal knowledge utilization, and integrates a memorization mechanism to continuously assimilate retrieved information, thereby enriching the model's internal knowledge. By leveraging internal knowledge and external search engine, the model continuously improves its capabilities, enabling efficient retrieval-augmented reasoning. Our experiments demonstrate that R1-Searcher++ outperforms previous RAG and reasoning methods and achieves efficient retrieval. The code is available at https://github.com/RUCAIBox/R1-Searcher-plus.

Improving Vision-language Models with Perception-centric Process Reward Models

Recent advancements in reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR) have significantly improved the complex reasoning ability of vision-language models (VLMs). However, its outcome-level supervision is too coarse to diagnose and correct errors within the reasoning chain. To this end, we propose Perceval, a process reward model (PRM) that enables token-level error grounding, which can extract image-related claims from the response and compare them one by one with the visual evidence in the image, ultimately returning claims that contain perceptual errors. Perceval is trained with perception-intensive supervised training data. We then integrate Perceval into the RL training process to train the policy models. Specifically, compared to traditional GRPO, which applies sequence-level advantages, we apply token-level advantages by targeting penalties on hallucinated spans identified by Perceval, thus enabling fine-grained supervision signals. In addition to augmenting the training process, Perceval can also assist VLMs during the inference stage. Using Perceval, we can truncate the erroneous portions of the model's response, and then either have the model regenerate the response directly or induce the model to reflect on its previous output. This process can be repeated multiple times to achieve test-time scaling. Experiments show significant improvements on benchmarks from various domains across multiple reasoning VLMs trained with RL, highlighting the promise of perception-centric supervision as a general-purpose strategy. For test-time scaling, it also demonstrates consistent performance gains over other strategies, such as major voting. Starve to Perceive: Taming Lazy Perception in VLMs with Constrained Visual Bandwidth

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) deployed as situated agents in high-resolution visual environments require active perception -- the ability to dynamically decide where to look through operations like zooming, cropping, and panning. However, current training paradigms produce models that mimic the surface form of such operations without functionally depending on their outputs, a phenomenon we term lazy perception. We trace this to a fundamental learning asymmetry: when coarse global views combined with language priors suffice for moderate accuracy, the model has no incentive to learn harder multi-step visual search. If a model can succeed without actively looking, it will never learn to look. This motivates Starve to Perceive, a training paradigm that constrains visual bandwidth -- restricting each observation to a tight token budget so that no single view suffices for task completion, making active perception the only viable strategy. Despite requiring no auxiliary losses, reward shaping, or architectural changes -- serving as a minimal, plug-in modification to standard post-training pipelines -- models trained under perceptual starvation achieve substantial gains of 5% average relative improvement across diverse benchmarks.
