DA$^2$ Dataset: Toward Dexterity-Aware Dual-Arm GraspingGuangyao Zhai, Yu Zheng, Ziwei Xu et al.
In this paper, we introduce DA$^2$, the first large-scale dual-arm dexterity-aware dataset for the generation of optimal bimanual grasping pairs for arbitrary large objects. The dataset contains about 9M pairs of parallel-jaw grasps, generated from more than 6000 objects and each labeled with various grasp dexterity measures. In addition, we propose an end-to-end dual-arm grasp evaluation model trained on the rendered scenes from this dataset. We utilize the evaluation model as our baseline to show the value of this novel and nontrivial dataset by both online analysis and real robot experiments. A Study on Differentiable Logic and LLMs for EPIC-KITCHENS-100 Unsupervised Domain Adaptation Challenge for Action Recognition 2023Yi Cheng, Ziwei Xu, Fen Fang et al.
In this technical report, we present our findings from a study conducted on the EPIC-KITCHENS-100 Unsupervised Domain Adaptation task for Action Recognition. Our research focuses on the innovative application of a differentiable logic loss in the training to leverage the co-occurrence relations between verb and noun, as well as the pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate the logic rules for the adaptation to unseen action labels. Specifically, the model's predictions are treated as the truth assignment of a co-occurrence logic formula to compute the logic loss, which measures the consistency between the predictions and the logic constraints. By using the verb-noun co-occurrence matrix generated from the dataset, we observe a moderate improvement in model performance compared to our baseline framework. To further enhance the model's adaptability to novel action labels, we experiment with rules generated using GPT-3.5, which leads to a slight decrease in performance. These findings shed light on the potential and challenges of incorporating differentiable logic and LLMs for knowledge extraction in unsupervised domain adaptation for action recognition. Our final submission (entitled `NS-LLM') achieved the first place in terms of top-1 action recognition accuracy.

Buy versus Build an LLM: A Decision Framework for GovernmentsJiahao Lu, Ziwei Xu, William Tjhi et al.
Large Language Models (LLMs) represent a new frontier of digital infrastructure that can support a wide range of public-sector applications, from general purpose citizen services to specialized and sensitive state functions. When expanding AI access, governments face a set of strategic choices over whether to buy existing services, build domestic capabilities, or adopt hybrid approaches across different domains and use cases. These are critical decisions especially when leading model providers are often foreign corporations, and LLM outputs are increasingly treated as trusted inputs to public decision-making and public discourse. In practice, these decisions are not intended to mandate a single approach across all domains; instead, national AI strategies are typically pluralistic, with sovereign, commercial and open-source models coexisting to serve different purposes. Governments may rely on commercial models for non-sensitive or commodity tasks, while pursuing greater control for critical, high-risk or strategically important applications. This paper provides a strategic framework for making this decision by evaluating these options across dimensions including sovereignty, safety, cost, resource capability, cultural fit, and sustainability. Importantly, "building" does not imply that governments must act alone: domestic capabilities may be developed through public research institutions, universities, state-owned enterprises, joint ventures, or broader national ecosystems. By detailing the technical requirements and practical challenges of each pathway, this work aims to serve as a reference for policy-makers to determine whether a buy or build approach best aligns with their specific national needs and societal goals.

HyperSim: A Holistic Sim-To-Real Framework For Robust Robotic ManipulationJunyi Dong, Haotian Luo, Ziwei Xu et al.
Scaling data volume and diversity is critical for generalizing embodied intelligence. While synthetic data generation offers a scalable alternative to expensive physical data acquisition, transferring robotic manipulation policies from simulation to the real world (sim-to-real) remains a formidable challenge due to the domain gap. This paper presents HyperSim, a holistic framework spanning from synthetic data generation to policy training and seamless real-world deployment. To systematically bridge the sim-to-real gap, HyperSim is realized through three core pillars: high-fidelity environment synthesis, adversarial trajectory generation, and sim-and-real co-training. Collectively, these modules address domain discrepancies by enhancing visual fidelity, expanding data coverage, and enforcing domain-invariant representations. We rigorously validate HyperSim through a large-scale empirical study involving 400 real-world task executions across two representative manipulation models. Assessed across three fine-grained metrics, our complete pipeline achieves remarkable sim-to-real success rates of 80% and 95% with ACT and π_{0}, respectively. Furthermore, policies trained on our adversarial trajectories exhibit significantly enhanced robustness against dynamic uncertainties, achieving a 35% higher completion rate under physical perturbations.

Question answering (QA) has been a long-standing focus in the NLP field, predominantly addressing reading comprehension and common sense QA. However, scenarios involving the preparation of answers to probable questions during professional oral presentations remain underexplored. In this paper, we pioneer the examination of this crucial yet overlooked topic by utilizing real-world QA conversation transcripts between company managers and professional analysts. We explore the proposed task using three causal knowledge graphs (KGs) and three large language models (LLMs). This work provides foundational insights into the application of LLMs in professional QA scenarios, highlighting the importance of causal KGs and perspective-taking in generating effective responses.

One Swallow Does Not Make a Summer: Understanding Semantic Structures in Embedding SpacesYandong Sun, Qiang Huang, Ziwei Xu et al.
Embedding spaces are fundamental to modern AI, translating raw data into high-dimensional vectors that encode rich semantic relationships. Yet, their internal structures remain opaque, with existing approaches often sacrificing semantic coherence for structural regularity or incurring high computational overhead to improve interpretability. To address these challenges, we introduce the Semantic Field Subspace (SFS), a geometry-preserving, context-aware representation that captures local semantic neighborhoods within the embedding space. We also propose SAFARI (SemAntic Field subspAce deteRmInation), an unsupervised, modality-agnostic algorithm that uncovers hierarchical semantic structures using a novel metric called Semantic Shift, which quantifies how semantics evolve as SFSes evolve. To ensure scalability, we develop an efficient approximation of Semantic Shift that replaces costly SVD computations, achieving a 15~30x speedup with average errors below 0.01. Extensive evaluations across six real-world text and image datasets show that SFSes outperform standard classifiers not only in classification but also in nuanced tasks such as political bias detection, while SAFARI consistently reveals interpretable and generalizable semantic hierarchies. This work presents a unified framework for structuring, analyzing, and scaling semantic understanding in embedding spaces.

Hallucination is Inevitable: An Innate Limitation of Large Language ModelsZiwei Xu, Sanjay Jain, Mohan Kankanhalli
Hallucination has been widely recognized to be a significant drawback for large language models (LLMs). There have been many works that attempt to reduce the extent of hallucination. These efforts have mostly been empirical so far, which cannot answer the fundamental question whether it can be completely eliminated. In this paper, we formalize the problem and show that it is impossible to eliminate hallucination in LLMs. Specifically, we define a formal world where hallucination is defined as inconsistencies between a computable LLM and a computable ground truth function. By employing results from learning theory, we show that LLMs cannot learn all the computable functions and will therefore inevitably hallucinate if used as general problem solvers. Since the formal world is a part of the real world which is much more complicated, hallucinations are also inevitable for real world LLMs. Furthermore, for real world LLMs constrained by provable time complexity, we describe the hallucination-prone tasks and empirically validate our claims. Finally, using the formal world framework, we discuss the possible mechanisms and efficacies of existing hallucination mitigators as well as the practical implications on the safe deployment of LLMs.

Bullying the Machine: How Personas Increase LLM VulnerabilityZiwei Xu, Udit Sanghi, Mohan Kankanhalli
Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in interactions where they are prompted to adopt personas. This paper investigates whether such persona conditioning affects model safety under bullying, an adversarial manipulation that applies psychological pressures in order to force the victim to comply to the attacker. We introduce a simulation framework in which an attacker LLM engages a victim LLM using psychologically grounded bullying tactics, while the victim adopts personas aligned with the Big Five personality traits. Experiments using multiple open-source LLMs and a wide range of adversarial goals reveal that certain persona configurations -- such as weakened agreeableness or conscientiousness -- significantly increase victim's susceptibility to unsafe outputs. Bullying tactics involving emotional or sarcastic manipulation, such as gaslighting and ridicule, are particularly effective. These findings suggest that persona-driven interaction introduces a novel vector for safety risks in LLMs and highlight the need for persona-aware safety evaluation and alignment strategies.

Do Prompts Guarantee Safety? Mitigating Toxicity from LLM Generations through Subspace InterventionHimanshu Singh, Ziwei Xu, A. V. Subramanyam et al.
Large Language Models (LLMs) are powerful text generators, yet they can produce toxic or harmful content even when given seemingly harmless prompts. This presents a serious safety challenge and can cause real-world harm. Toxicity is often subtle and context-dependent, making it difficult to detect at the token level or through coarse sentence-level signals. Moreover, efforts to mitigate toxicity often face a trade-off between safety and the coherence, or fluency of the generated text. In this work, we present a targeted subspace intervention strategy for identifying and suppressing hidden toxic patterns from underlying model representations, while preserving overall ability to generate safe fluent content. On the RealToxicityPrompts, our method achieves strong mitigation performance compared to existing baselines, with minimal impact on inference complexity. Across multiple LLMs, our approach reduces toxicity of state-of-the-art detoxification systems by 8-20%, while maintaining comparable fluency. Through extensive quantitative and qualitative analyses, we show that our approach achieves effective toxicity reduction without impairing generative performance, consistently outperforming existing baselines.

Bridging the Intent Gap: Knowledge-Enhanced Visual GenerationYi Cheng, Ziwei Xu, Dongyun Lin et al.
For visual content generation, discrepancies between user intentions and the generated content have been a longstanding problem. This discrepancy arises from two main factors. First, user intentions are inherently complex, with subtle details not fully captured by input prompts. The absence of such details makes it challenging for generative models to accurately reflect the intended meaning, leading to a mismatch between the desired and generated output. Second, generative models trained on visual-label pairs lack the comprehensive knowledge to accurately represent all aspects of the input data in their generated outputs. To address these challenges, we propose a knowledge-enhanced iterative refinement framework for visual content generation. We begin by analyzing and identifying the key challenges faced by existing generative models. Then, we introduce various knowledge sources, including human insights, pre-trained models, logic rules, and world knowledge, which can be leveraged to address these challenges. Furthermore, we propose a novel visual generation framework that incorporates a knowledge-based feedback module to iteratively refine the generation process. This module gradually improves the alignment between the generated content and user intentions. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed framework through preliminary results, highlighting the potential of knowledge-enhanced generative models for intention-aligned content generation.

This technical report introduces our top-ranked solution that employs two approaches, \ie suffix injection and projected gradient descent (PGD) , to address the TiFA workshop MLLM attack challenge. Specifically, we first append the text from an incorrectly labeled option (pseudo-labeled) to the original query as a suffix. Using this modified query, our second approach applies the PGD method to add imperceptible perturbations to the image. Combining these two techniques enables successful attacks on the LLaVA 1.5 model.

Unsupervised Motion Representation Learning with Capsule AutoencodersZiwei Xu, Xudong Shen, Yongkang Wong et al.
We propose the Motion Capsule Autoencoder (MCAE), which addresses a key challenge in the unsupervised learning of motion representations: transformation invariance. MCAE models motion in a two-level hierarchy. In the lower level, a spatio-temporal motion signal is divided into short, local, and semantic-agnostic snippets. In the higher level, the snippets are aggregated to form full-length semantic-aware segments. For both levels, we represent motion with a set of learned transformation invariant templates and the corresponding geometric transformations by using capsule autoencoders of a novel design. This leads to a robust and efficient encoding of viewpoint changes. MCAE is evaluated on a novel Trajectory20 motion dataset and various real-world skeleton-based human action datasets. Notably, it achieves better results than baselines on Trajectory20 with considerably fewer parameters and state-of-the-art performance on the unsupervised skeleton-based action recognition task.

Relation-aware Compositional Zero-shot Learning for Attribute-Object Pair RecognitionZiwei Xu, Guangzhi Wang, Yongkang Wong et al.
This paper proposes a novel model for recognizing images with composite attribute-object concepts, notably for composite concepts that are unseen during model training. We aim to explore the three key properties required by the task --- relation-aware, consistent, and decoupled --- to learn rich and robust features for primitive concepts that compose attribute-object pairs. To this end, we propose the Blocked Message Passing Network (BMP-Net). The model consists of two modules. The concept module generates semantically meaningful features for primitive concepts, whereas the visual module extracts visual features for attributes and objects from input images. A message passing mechanism is used in the concept module to capture the relations between primitive concepts. Furthermore, to prevent the model from being biased towards seen composite concepts and reduce the entanglement between attributes and objects, we propose a blocking mechanism that equalizes the information available to the model for both seen and unseen concepts. Extensive experiments and ablation studies on two benchmarks show the efficacy of the proposed model.

GradMix: Multi-source Transfer across Domains and TasksJunnan Li, Ziwei Xu, Yongkang Wong et al.
The computer vision community is witnessing an unprecedented rate of new tasks being proposed and addressed, thanks to the deep convolutional networks' capability to find complex mappings from X to Y. The advent of each task often accompanies the release of a large-scale annotated dataset, for supervised training of deep network. However, it is expensive and time-consuming to manually label sufficient amount of training data. Therefore, it is important to develop algorithms that can leverage off-the-shelf labeled dataset to learn useful knowledge for the target task. While previous works mostly focus on transfer learning from a single source, we study multi-source transfer across domains and tasks (MS-DTT), in a semi-supervised setting. We propose GradMix, a model-agnostic method applicable to any model trained with gradient-based learning rule, to transfer knowledge via gradient descent by weighting and mixing the gradients from all sources during training. GradMix follows a meta-learning objective, which assigns layer-wise weights to the source gradients, such that the combined gradient follows the direction that minimize the loss for a small set of samples from the target dataset. In addition, we propose to adaptively adjust the learning rate for each mini-batch based on its importance to the target task, and a pseudo-labeling method to leverage the unlabeled samples in the target domain. We conduct MS-DTT experiments on two tasks: digit recognition and action recognition, and demonstrate the advantageous performance of the proposed method against multiple baselines.

In this work, we aim to leverage prior symbolic knowledge to improve the performance of deep models. We propose a graph embedding network that projects propositional formulae (and assignments) onto a manifold via an augmented Graph Convolutional Network (GCN). To generate semantically-faithful embeddings, we develop techniques to recognize node heterogeneity, and semantic regularization that incorporate structural constraints into the embedding. Experiments show that our approach improves the performance of models trained to perform entailment checking and visual relation prediction. Interestingly, we observe a connection between the tractability of the propositional theory representation and the ease of embedding. Future exploration of this connection may elucidate the relationship between knowledge compilation and vector representation learning.

Comparing of Term Clustering Frameworks for Modular Ontology LearningZiwei Xu, Mounira Harzallah, Fabrice Guillet
This paper aims to use term clustering to build a modular ontology according to core ontology from domain-specific text. The acquisition of semantic knowledge focuses on noun phrase appearing with the same syntactic roles in relation to a verb or its preposition combination in a sentence. The construction of this co-occurrence matrix from context helps to build feature space of noun phrases, which is then transformed to several encoding representations including feature selection and dimensionality reduction. In addition, the content has also been presented with the construction of word vectors. These representations are clustered respectively with K-Means and Affinity Propagation (AP) methods, which differentiate into the term clustering frameworks. Due to the randomness of K-Means, iteration efforts are adopted to find the optimal parameter. The frameworks are evaluated extensively where AP shows dominant effectiveness for co-occurred terms and NMF encoding technique is salient by its promising facilities in feature compression.

Utilizing High-level Visual Feature for Indoor Shopping Mall NavigationZiwei Xu, Haitian Zheng, Minjian Pang et al.
Towards robust and convenient indoor shopping mall navigation, we propose a novel learning-based scheme to utilize the high-level visual information from the storefront images captured by personal devices of users. Specifically, we decompose the visual navigation problem into localization and map generation respectively. Given a storefront input image, a novel feature fusion scheme (denoted as FusionNet) is proposed by fusing the distinguishing DNN-based appearance feature and text feature for robust recognition of store brands, which serves for accurate localization. Regarding the map generation, we convert the user-captured indicator map of the shopping mall into a topological map by parsing the stores and their connectivity. Experimental results conducted on the real shopping malls demonstrate that the proposed system achieves robust localization and precise map generation, enabling accurate navigation.

Decentralized Motion Planning with Collision Avoidance for a Team of UAVs under High Level GoalsChristos K. Verginis, Ziwei Xu, Dimos V. Dimarogonas
This paper addresses the motion planning problem for a team of aerial agents under high level goals. We propose a hybrid control strategy that guarantees the accomplishment of each agent's local goal specification, which is given as a temporal logic formula, while guaranteeing inter-agent collision avoidance. In particular, by defining 3-D spheres that bound the agents' volume, we extend previous work on decentralized navigation functions and propose control laws that navigate the agents among predefined regions of interest of the workspace while avoiding collision with each other. This allows us to abstract the motion of the agents as finite transition systems and, by employing standard formal verification techniques, to derive a high-level control algorithm that satisfies the agents' specifications. Simulation and experimental results with quadrotors verify the validity of the proposed method.
