Narrative Flattening: How Post-Training Compresses Thematic, Affective, and Stylistic Variation in LLM FictionZehan Li, Yutong Zhu, Siyang Wu et al.
Large language models produce fluent fiction, yet their creative output is widely seen as flat. We ask where this quality originates in the training and whether it affects different domains of human fiction equally. We construct a matched story-continuation paradigm across StoryStar (public-platform), TMAS (prompt-guided), and The New Yorker (professional literary)-and compare continuations from four OLMo 32B checkpoints (Base, SFT, DPO, RLVR) against matched human text. Because these checkpoints share architecture, scale, tokenizer, and pretraining, the design isolates the post-training effect. We measure each continuation along three sentence-level dimensions: thematic motion, affective prevalence, and linguistic diversity. Across all three, post-training compresses dynamic variation: thematic transitions become more uniform, high-intensity emotions give way to neutrality, and stylistic diversity across stories shrinks. We term this progressive loss narrative flattening. The effect is directionally stable across story domains but gap size depends on the human baseline: professional literary fiction is compressed most, while public-platform and prompt-guided stories show smaller gaps, consistent with their human baselines sitting closer to the model's default rhythm. Post-trained endpoints converge across domains, suggesting alignment produces a continuation regime largely insensitive to the source domain's narrative texture.

Foundation Protocol: A Coordination Layer for Agentic SocietyBang Liu, Yongfeng Gu, Jiayi Zhang et al.
Autonomous agents are moving from tools into a layer of social infrastructure: they browse, purchase, deploy software, manage systems, and increasingly interact with one another. As these systems scale, the bottleneck shifts away from raw model capability toward coordination. Agents need to form reliable relationships, organize multi-agent work, exchange value, support an AI economy, and stay safe and accountable under real-world oversight. This paper introduces the Foundation Protocol (FP), a graph-first coordination layer for an emerging human-AI society. FP unifies heterogeneous entities, including agents, tools, resources, humans, institutions, and organizations, and supports native multi-party organization and event-based collaboration. It also provides economic primitives for metering, receipts, and settlement, and treats policy, provenance, and audit as first-class concerns. FP is designed to wrap and bridge existing protocols rather than replace them, enabling incremental adoption while reducing integration and governance overhead. The aim is to keep autonomous agency composable while keeping accountability non-negotiable, so that coordination itself can become shared infrastructure for a human-AI society that is open, pluralistic, and governable.

Spoiler Alert: Narrative Forecasting as a Metric for Tension in LLM StorytellingPeiqi Sui, Yutong Zhu, Tianyi Cheng et al.
LLMs have so far failed both to generate consistently compelling stories and to recognize this failure--on the leading creative-writing benchmark (EQ-Bench), LLM judges rank zero-shot AI stories above New Yorker short stories, a gold standard for literary fiction. We argue that existing rubrics overlook a key dimension of compelling human stories: narrative tension. We introduce the 100-Endings metric, which walks through a story sentence by sentence: at each position, a model predicts how the story will end 100 times given only the text so far, and we measure tension as how often predictions fail to match the ground truth. Beyond the mismatch rate, the sentence-level curve yields complementary statistics, such as inflection rate, a geometric measure of how frequently the curve reverses direction, tracking twists and revelations. Unlike rubric-based judges, 100-Endings correctly ranks New Yorker stories far above LLM outputs. Grounded in narratological principles, we design a story-generation pipeline using structural constraints, including analysis of story templates, idea formulation, and narrative scaffolding. Our pipeline significantly increases narrative tension as measured by the 100-Endings metric, while maintaining performance on the EQ-Bench leaderboard.
