MM-SafetyBench: A Benchmark for Safety Evaluation of Multimodal Large Language ModelsXin Liu, Yichen Zhu, Jindong Gu et al. · deepmind, oxford
The security concerns surrounding Large Language Models (LLMs) have been extensively explored, yet the safety of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) remains understudied. In this paper, we observe that Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) can be easily compromised by query-relevant images, as if the text query itself were malicious. To address this, we introduce MM-SafetyBench, a comprehensive framework designed for conducting safety-critical evaluations of MLLMs against such image-based manipulations. We have compiled a dataset comprising 13 scenarios, resulting in a total of 5,040 text-image pairs. Our analysis across 12 state-of-the-art models reveals that MLLMs are susceptible to breaches instigated by our approach, even when the equipped LLMs have been safety-aligned. In response, we propose a straightforward yet effective prompting strategy to enhance the resilience of MLLMs against these types of attacks. Our work underscores the need for a concerted effort to strengthen and enhance the safety measures of open-source MLLMs against potential malicious exploits. 3D Implicit Transporter for Temporally Consistent Keypoint DiscoveryChengliang Zhong, Yuhang Zheng, Yupeng Zheng et al.
Keypoint-based representation has proven advantageous in various visual and robotic tasks. However, the existing 2D and 3D methods for detecting keypoints mainly rely on geometric consistency to achieve spatial alignment, neglecting temporal consistency. To address this issue, the Transporter method was introduced for 2D data, which reconstructs the target frame from the source frame to incorporate both spatial and temporal information. However, the direct application of the Transporter to 3D point clouds is infeasible due to their structural differences from 2D images. Thus, we propose the first 3D version of the Transporter, which leverages hybrid 3D representation, cross attention, and implicit reconstruction. We apply this new learning system on 3D articulated objects and nonrigid animals (humans and rodents) and show that learned keypoints are spatio-temporally consistent. Additionally, we propose a closed-loop control strategy that utilizes the learned keypoints for 3D object manipulation and demonstrate its superior performance. Codes are available at https://github.com/zhongcl-thu/3D-Implicit-Transporter.
Beyond One-Preference-Fits-All Alignment: Multi-Objective Direct Preference OptimizationZhanhui Zhou, Jie Liu, Jing Shao et al.
A single language model, even when aligned with labelers through reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), may not suit all human preferences. Recent approaches therefore prefer customization, gathering multi-dimensional feedback, and creating distinct reward models for each dimension. Different language models are then optimized for various preferences using multi-objective RLHF (MORLHF) with varying reward weights. However, RL fine-tuning is unstable and resource-heavy, especially with diverse and usually conflicting objectives. In this paper, we present Multi-Objective Direct Preference Optimization (MODPO), an RL-free extension of Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) for multiple alignment objectives. Essentially, MODPO folds language modeling directly into reward modeling, training language models as implicit collective reward models that combine all objectives with specific weights. MODPO theoretically yields the same optimal solutions as MORLHF but is practically more stable and efficient. Empirical results in safety alignment and long-form question answering show that MODPO matches or outperforms existing methods, producing a Pareto front of language models catering to diverse preferences with three times less computational resources compared to MORLHF. Code is available at https://github.com/ZHZisZZ/modpo.

R2FD2: Fast and Robust Matching of Multimodal Remote Sensing Image via Repeatable Feature Detector and Rotation-invariant Feature DescriptorBai Zhu, Chao Yang, Jinkun Dai et al.
Automatically identifying feature correspondences between multimodal images is facing enormous challenges because of the significant differences both in radiation and geometry. To address these problems, we propose a novel feature matching method (named R2FD2) that is robust to radiation and rotation differences. Our R2FD2 is conducted in two critical contributions, consisting of a repeatable feature detector and a rotation-invariant feature descriptor. In the first stage, a repeatable feature detector called the Multi-channel Auto-correlation of the Log-Gabor (MALG) is presented for feature detection, which combines the multi-channel auto-correlation strategy with the Log-Gabor wavelets to detect interest points (IPs) with high repeatability and uniform distribution. In the second stage, a rotation-invariant feature descriptor is constructed, named the Rotation-invariant Maximum index map of the Log-Gabor (RMLG), which consists of two components: fast assignment of dominant orientation and construction of feature representation. In the process of fast assignment of dominant orientation, a Rotation-invariant Maximum Index Map (RMIM) is built to address rotation deformations. Then, the proposed RMLG incorporates the rotation-invariant RMIM with the spatial configuration of DAISY to depict a more discriminative feature representation, which improves RMLG's resistance to radiation and rotation variances.Experimental results show that the proposed R2FD2 outperforms five state-of-the-art feature matching methods, and has superior advantages in adaptability and universality. Moreover, our R2FD2 achieves the accuracy of matching within two pixels and has a great advantage in matching efficiency over other state-of-the-art methods.
GVTNet: Graph Vision Transformer For Face Super-ResolutionChao Yang, Yong Fan, Cheng Lu et al.
Recent advances in face super-resolution research have utilized the Transformer architecture. This method processes the input image into a series of small patches. However, because of the strong correlation between different facial components in facial images. When it comes to super-resolution of low-resolution images, existing algorithms cannot handle the relationships between patches well, resulting in distorted facial components in the super-resolution results. To solve the problem, we propose a transformer architecture based on graph neural networks called graph vision transformer network. We treat each patch as a graph node and establish an adjacency matrix based on the information between patches. In this way, the patch only interacts between neighboring patches, further processing the relationship of facial components. Quantitative and visualization experiments have underscored the superiority of our algorithm over state-of-the-art techniques. Through detailed comparisons, we have demonstrated that our algorithm possesses more advanced super-resolution capabilities, particularly in enhancing facial components. A Robust Multimodal Remote Sensing Image Registration Method and System Using Steerable Filters with First- and Second-order GradientsYuanxin Ye, Bai Zhu, Tengfeng Tang et al.
Co-registration of multimodal remote sensing images is still an ongoing challenge because of nonlinear radiometric differences (NRD) and significant geometric distortions (e.g., scale and rotation changes) between these images. In this paper, a robust matching method based on the Steerable filters is proposed consisting of two critical steps. First, to address severe NRD, a novel structural descriptor named the Steerable Filters of first- and second-Order Channels (SFOC) is constructed, which combines the first- and second-order gradient information by using the steerable filters with a multi-scale strategy to depict more discriminative structure features of images. Then, a fast similarity measure is established called Fast Normalized Cross-Correlation (Fast-NCCSFOC), which employs the Fast Fourier Transform technique and the integral image to improve the matching efficiency. Furthermore, to achieve reliable registration performance, a coarse-to-fine multimodal registration system is designed consisting of two pivotal modules. The local coarse registration is first conducted by involving both detection of interest points (IPs) and local geometric correction, which effectively utilizes the prior georeferencing information of RS images to address global geometric distortions. In the fine registration stage, the proposed SFOC is used to resist significant NRD, and to detect control points between multimodal images by a template matching scheme. The performance of the proposed matching method has been evaluated with many different kinds of multimodal RS images. The results show its superior matching performance compared with the state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, the designed registration system also outperforms the popular commercial software in both registration accuracy and computational efficiency. Our system is available at https://github.com/yeyuanxin110.

Sim2Real Object-Centric Keypoint Detection and DescriptionChengliang Zhong, Chao Yang, Jinshan Qi et al.
Keypoint detection and description play a central role in computer vision. Most existing methods are in the form of scene-level prediction, without returning the object classes of different keypoints. In this paper, we propose the object-centric formulation, which, beyond the conventional setting, requires further identifying which object each interest point belongs to. With such fine-grained information, our framework enables more downstream potentials, such as object-level matching and pose estimation in a clustered environment. To get around the difficulty of label collection in the real world, we develop a sim2real contrastive learning mechanism that can generalize the model trained in simulation to real-world applications. The novelties of our training method are three-fold: (i) we integrate the uncertainty into the learning framework to improve feature description of hard cases, e.g., less-textured or symmetric patches; (ii) we decouple the object descriptor into two output branches -- intra-object salience and inter-object distinctness, resulting in a better pixel-wise description; (iii) we enforce cross-view semantic consistency for enhanced robustness in representation learning. Comprehensive experiments on image matching and 6D pose estimation verify the encouraging generalization ability of our method from simulation to reality. Particularly for 6D pose estimation, our method significantly outperforms typical unsupervised/sim2real methods, achieving a closer gap with the fully supervised counterpart. End-to-end Adaptive Distributed Training on PaddlePaddleYulong Ao, Zhihua Wu, Dianhai Yu et al.
Distributed training has become a pervasive and effective approach for training a large neural network (NN) model with processing massive data. However, it is very challenging to satisfy requirements from various NN models, diverse computing resources, and their dynamic changes during a training job. In this study, we design our distributed training framework in a systematic end-to-end view to provide the built-in adaptive ability for different scenarios, especially for industrial applications and production environments, by fully considering resource allocation, model partition, task placement, and distributed execution. Based on the unified distributed graph and the unified cluster object, our adaptive framework is equipped with a global cost model and a global planner, which can enable arbitrary parallelism, resource-aware placement, multi-mode execution, fault-tolerant, and elastic distributed training. The experiments demonstrate that our framework can satisfy various requirements from the diversity of applications and the heterogeneity of resources with highly competitive performance. The ERNIE language model with 260 billion parameters is efficiently trained on thousands of AI processors with 91.7% weak scalability. The throughput of the model from the recommender system by employing the heterogeneous pipeline asynchronous execution can be increased up to 2.1 times and 3.3 times that of the GPU-only and CPU-only training respectively. Moreover, the fault-tolerant and elastic distributed training have been successfully applied to the online industrial applications, which give a reduction of 34.49% in the number of failed long-term training jobs and an increase of 33.91% for the global scheduling efficiency in the production environment.

Improving Co-registration for Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 Optical imagesYuanxin Ye, Chao Yang, Bai Zhu et al.
Co-registering the Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 optical data of European Space Agency (ESA) is of great importance for many remote sensing applications. However, we find that there are evident misregistration shifts between the Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 optical images that are directly downloaded from the official website. To address that, this paper presents a fast and effective registration method for the two types of images. In the proposed method, a block-based scheme is first designed to extract evenly distributed interest points. Then the correspondences are detected by using the similarity of structural features between the SAR and optical images, where the three dimension (3D) phase correlation (PC) is used as the similarity measure for accelerating image matching. Finally, the obtained correspondences are employed to measure the misregistration shifts between the images. Moreover, to eliminate the misregistration, we use some representative geometric transformation models such as polynomial models, projective models, and rational function models for the co-registration of the two types of images, and compare and analyze their registration accuracy under different numbers of control points and different terrains. Six pairs of the Sentinel-1 SAR L1 and Sentinel-2 optical L1C images covering three different terrains are tested in our experiments. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve precise correspondences between the images, and the 3rd. Order polynomial achieves the most satisfactory registration results. Its registration accuracy of the flat areas is less than 1.0 10m pixels, and that of the hilly areas is about 1.5 10m pixels, and that of the mountainous areas is between 1.7 and 2.3 10m pixels, which significantly improves the co-registration accuracy of the Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 optical images.

Fast and Robust Registration of Aerial Images and LiDAR data Based on Structrual Features and 3D Phase CorrelationBai Zhu, Yuanxin Ye, Chao Yang et al.
Co-Registration of aerial imagery and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data is quilt challenging because the different imaging mechanism causes significant geometric and radiometric distortions between such data. To tackle the problem, this paper proposes an automatic registration method based on structural features and three-dimension (3D) phase correlation. In the proposed method, the LiDAR point cloud data is first transformed into the intensity map, which is used as the reference image. Then, we employ the Fast operator to extract uniformly distributed interest points in the aerial image by a partition strategy and perform a local geometric correction by using the collinearity equation to eliminate scale and rotation difference between images. Subsequently, a robust structural feature descriptor is build based on dense gradient features, and the 3D phase correlation is used to detect control points (CPs) between aerial images and LiDAR data in the frequency domain, where the image matching is accelerated by the 3D Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Finally, the obtained CPs are employed to correct the exterior orientation elements, which is used to achieve co-registration of aerial images and LiDAR data. Experiments with two datasets of aerial images and LiDAR data show that the proposed method is much faster and more robust than state of the art methods

Towards Disentangled Representations for Human Retargeting by Multi-view LearningChao Yang, Xiaofeng Liu, Qingming Tang et al.
We study the problem of learning disentangled representations for data across multiple domains and its applications in human retargeting. Our goal is to map an input image to an identity-invariant latent representation that captures intrinsic factors such as expressions and poses. To this end, we present a novel multi-view learning approach that leverages various data sources such as images, keypoints, and poses. Our model consists of multiple id-conditioned VAEs for different views of the data. During training, we encourage the latent embeddings to be consistent across these views. Our observation is that auxiliary data like keypoints and poses contain critical, id-agnostic semantic information, and it is easier to train a disentangling CVAE on these simpler views to separate such semantics from other id-specific attributes. We show that training multi-view CVAEs and encourage latent-consistency guides the image encoding to preserve the semantics of expressions and poses, leading to improved disentangled representations and better human retargeting results.

PSelInv - A Distributed Memory Parallel Algorithm for Selected Inversion: the non-symmetric CaseMathias Jacquelin, Lin Lin, Chao Yang
This paper generalizes the parallel selected inversion algorithm called PSelInv to sparse non- symmetric matrices. We assume a general sparse matrix A has been decomposed as PAQ = LU on a distributed memory parallel machine, where L, U are lower and upper triangular matrices, and P, Q are permutation matrices, respectively. The PSelInv method computes selected elements of A-1. The selection is confined by the sparsity pattern of the matrix AT . Our algorithm does not assume any symmetry properties of A, and our parallel implementation is memory efficient, in the sense that the computed elements of A-T overwrites the sparse matrix L+U in situ. PSelInv involves a large number of collective data communication activities within different processor groups of various sizes. In order to minimize idle time and improve load balancing, tree-based asynchronous communication is used to coordinate all such collective communication. Numerical results demonstrate that PSelInv can scale efficiently to 6,400 cores for a variety of matrices.
