CAREF: Calibration-Aware Regularization for Explanation Faithfulness Without Rationale Supervision

Naphat Nithisopa, Teerapong Panboonyuen

We introduce CAREF, a parameter-efficient fine-tuning framework that jointly optimizes predictive accuracy and explanation faithfulness via calibration-aware regularization. At its core, CAREF couples entropy-based calibration with token-level sparsity control through a single unified loss, the Calibration-Aware Regularization for Explanation Faithfulness (LSCED), without requiring rationale supervision. Evaluated on four NLE benchmarks (COS-E, ECQA, ComVE, e-SNLI) with Flan-T5, our lightweight CAREF-AQ variant attains the best average accuracy (89.04) and explanation alignment (81.00 nBERT) using only 6.43% of trainable parameters, outperforming LoRA and AdaLoRA. To our knowledge, CAREF is the first method to unify entropy and sparsity regularization in a single training objective for interpretable LLM fine-tuning.

MARS: Mask Attention Refinement with Sequential Quadtree Nodes for Car Damage Instance Segmentation

Teerapong Panboonyuen, Naphat Nithisopa, Panin Pienroj et al.

Evaluating car damages from misfortune is critical to the car insurance industry. However, the accuracy is still insufficient for real-world applications since the deep learning network is not designed for car damage images as inputs, and its segmented masks are still very coarse. This paper presents MARS (Mask Attention Refinement with Sequential quadtree nodes) for car damage instance segmentation. Our MARS represents self-attention mechanisms to draw global dependencies between the sequential quadtree nodes layer and quadtree transformer to recalibrate channel weights and predict highly accurate instance masks. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that MARS outperforms state-of-the-art (SOTA) instance segmentation methods on three popular benchmarks such as Mask R-CNN [9], PointRend [13], and Mask Transfiner [12], by a large margin of +1.3 maskAP-based R50-FPN backbone and +2.3 maskAP-based R101-FPN backbone on Thai car-damage dataset. Our demos are available at https://github.com/kaopanboonyuen/MARS.

DOTA: Deformable Optimized Transformer Architecture for End-to-End Text Recognition with Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Naphat Nithisopa, Teerapong Panboonyuen

Text recognition in natural images remains a challenging yet essential task, with broad applications spanning computer vision and natural language processing. This paper introduces a novel end-to-end framework that combines ResNet and Vision Transformer backbones with advanced methodologies, including Deformable Convolutions, Retrieval-Augmented Generation, and Conditional Random Fields (CRF). These innovations collectively enhance feature representation and improve Optical Character Recognition (OCR) performance. Specifically, the framework substitutes standard convolution layers in the third and fourth blocks with Deformable Convolutions, leverages adaptive dropout for regularization, and incorporates CRF for more refined sequence modeling. Extensive experiments conducted on six benchmark datasets IC13, IC15, SVT, IIIT5K, SVTP, and CUTE80 validate the proposed method's efficacy, achieving notable accuracies: 97.32% on IC13, 58.26% on IC15, 88.10% on SVT, 74.13% on IIIT5K, 82.17% on SVTP, and 66.67% on CUTE80, resulting in an average accuracy of 77.77%. These results establish a new state-of-the-art for text recognition, demonstrating the robustness of the approach across diverse and challenging datasets.
