Efficient Logit-based Knowledge Distillation of Deep Spiking Neural Networks for Full-Range Timestep Deployment

Chengting Yu, Xiaochen Zhao, Lei Liu et al.

Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) are emerging as a brain-inspired alternative to traditional Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), prized for their potential energy efficiency on neuromorphic hardware. Despite this, SNNs often suffer from accuracy degradation compared to ANNs and face deployment challenges due to fixed inference timesteps, which require retraining for adjustments, limiting operational flexibility. To address these issues, our work considers the spatio-temporal property inherent in SNNs, and proposes a novel distillation framework for deep SNNs that optimizes performance across full-range timesteps without specific retraining, enhancing both efficacy and deployment adaptability. We provide both theoretical analysis and empirical validations to illustrate that training guarantees the convergence of all implicit models across full-range timesteps. Experimental results on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, CIFAR10-DVS, and ImageNet demonstrate state-of-the-art performance among distillation-based SNNs training methods. GQSA: Group Quantization and Sparsity for Accelerating Large Language Model Inference

Chao Zeng, Songwei Liu, Shu Yang et al.

Model compression has emerged as a mainstream solution to reduce memory usage and computational overhead. This paper presents Group Quantization and Sparse Acceleration (GQSA), a novel compression technique tailored for LLMs. Traditional methods typically focus exclusively on either quantization or sparsification, but relying on a single strategy often results in significant performance loss at high compression rates. In contrast, GQSA integrates quantization and sparsification in a tightly coupled manner, leveraging GPU-friendly structured group sparsity and quantization for efficient acceleration. Building upon system-algorithm co-design principles, we propose a two-stage sparse optimization strategy that ensures the performance superiority of the compressed model. On the engine side, we introduce a "task-centric" parallel strategy, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first application in the domain of sparse computing. Compared to the traditional 2:4 sparse method, the GQSA offers a more flexible and adjustable sparsity rate, as well as a higher weight compression rate, and is efficiently compatible with weight-only quantization methods. Experimental results demonstrate that, under the GQSA W4S50% compression setting, the model's accuracy surpasses that of both 2:4 pruning and W2 quantization. Furthermore, at the inference level, GQSA outperforms W2 by 1.26$\times$ and 2:4 pruning by 2.35$\times$ in terms of speed.

A Distributed Training Algorithm of Generative Adversarial Networks with Quantized Gradients

Xiaojun Chen, Shu Yang, Li Shen et al.

Training generative adversarial networks (GAN) in a distributed fashion is a promising technology since it is contributed to training GAN on a massive of data efficiently in real-world applications. However, GAN is known to be difficult to train by SGD-type methods (may fail to converge) and the distributed SGD-type methods may also suffer from massive amount of communication cost. In this paper, we propose a {distributed GANs training algorithm with quantized gradient, dubbed DQGAN,} which is the first distributed training method with quantized gradient for GANs. The new method trains GANs based on a specific single machine algorithm called Optimistic Mirror Descent (OMD) algorithm, and is applicable to any gradient compression method that satisfies a general $δ$-approximate compressor. The error-feedback operation we designed is used to compensate for the bias caused by the compression, and moreover, ensure the convergence of the new method. Theoretically, we establish the non-asymptotic convergence of {DQGAN} algorithm to first-order stationary point, which shows that the proposed algorithm can achieve a linear speedup in the parameter server model. Empirically, our experiments show that our {DQGAN} algorithm can reduce the communication cost and save the training time with slight performance degradation on both synthetic and real datasets.

Domain-Adversarial Multi-Task Framework for Novel Therapeutic Property Prediction of Compounds

Lingwei Xie, Song He, Shu Yang et al.

With the rapid development of high-throughput technologies, parallel acquisition of large-scale drug-informatics data provides huge opportunities to improve pharmaceutical research and development. One significant application is the purpose prediction of small molecule compounds, aiming to specify therapeutic properties of extensive purpose-unknown compounds and to repurpose novel therapeutic properties of FDA-approved drugs. Such problem is very challenging since compound attributes contain heterogeneous data with various feature patterns such as drug fingerprint, drug physicochemical property, drug perturbation gene expression. Moreover, there is complex nonlinear dependency among heterogeneous data. In this paper, we propose a novel domain-adversarial multi-task framework for integrating shared knowledge from multiple domains. The framework utilizes the adversarial strategy to effectively learn target representations and models their nonlinear dependency. Experiments on two real-world datasets illustrate that the performance of our approach obtains an obvious improvement over competitive baselines. The novel therapeutic properties of purpose-unknown compounds we predicted are mostly reported or brought to the clinics. Furthermore, our framework can integrate various attributes beyond the three domains examined here and can be applied in the industry for screening the purpose of huge amounts of as yet unidentified compounds.
