Learning from Pixel-Level Noisy Label : A New Perspective for Light Field Saliency DetectionMingtao Feng, Kendong Liu, Liang Zhang et al.
Saliency detection with light field images is becoming attractive given the abundant cues available, however, this comes at the expense of large-scale pixel level annotated data which is expensive to generate. In this paper, we propose to learn light field saliency from pixel-level noisy labels obtained from unsupervised hand crafted featured based saliency methods. Given this goal, a natural question is: can we efficiently incorporate the relationships among light field cues while identifying clean labels in a unified framework? We address this question by formulating the learning as a joint optimization of intra light field features fusion stream and inter scenes correlation stream to generate the predictions. Specially, we first introduce a pixel forgetting guided fusion module to mutually enhance the light field features and exploit pixel consistency across iterations to identify noisy pixels. Next, we introduce a cross scene noise penalty loss for better reflecting latent structures of training data and enabling the learning to be invariant to noise. Extensive experiments on multiple benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of our framework showing that it learns saliency prediction comparable to state-of-the-art fully supervised light field saliency methods. Data Augmentation for Sparse Multidimensional Learning Performance Data Using Generative AILiang Zhang, Jionghao Lin, John Sabatini et al. · cmu
Learning performance data describe correct and incorrect answers or problem-solving attempts in adaptive learning, such as in intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs). Learning performance data tend to be highly sparse (80\%\(\sim\)90\% missing observations) in most real-world applications due to adaptive item selection. This data sparsity presents challenges to using learner models to effectively predict future performance explore new hypotheses about learning. This article proposes a systematic framework for augmenting learner data to address data sparsity in learning performance data. First, learning performance is represented as a three-dimensional tensor of learners' questions, answers, and attempts, capturing longitudinal knowledge states during learning. Second, a tensor factorization method is used to impute missing values in sparse tensors of collected learner data, thereby grounding the imputation on knowledge tracing tasks that predict missing performance values based on real observations. Third, a module for generating patterns of learning is used. This study contrasts two forms of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), including Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Generate Pre-Trained Transformers (GPT) to generate data associated with different clusters of learner data. We tested this approach on an adult literacy dataset from AutoTutor lessons developed for Adult Reading Comprehension (ARC). We found that: (1) tensor factorization improved the performance in tracing and predicting knowledge mastery compared with other knowledge tracing techniques without data augmentation, showing higher relative fidelity for this imputation method, and (2) the GAN-based simulation showed greater overall stability and less statistical bias based on a divergence evaluation with varying simulation sample sizes compared to GPT.

mPLUG-DocOwl2: High-resolution Compressing for OCR-free Multi-page Document UnderstandingAnwen Hu, Haiyang Xu, Liang Zhang et al.
Multimodel Large Language Models(MLLMs) have achieved promising OCR-free Document Understanding performance by increasing the supported resolution of document images. However, this comes at the cost of generating thousands of visual tokens for a single document image, leading to excessive GPU memory and slower inference times, particularly in multi-page document comprehension. In this work, to address these challenges, we propose a High-resolution DocCompressor module to compress each high-resolution document image into 324 tokens, guided by low-resolution global visual features. With this compression module, to strengthen multi-page document comprehension ability and balance both token efficiency and question-answering performance, we develop the DocOwl2 under a three-stage training framework: Single-image Pretraining, Multi-image Continue-pretraining, and Multi-task Finetuning. DocOwl2 sets a new state-of-the-art across multi-page document understanding benchmarks and reduces first token latency by more than 50%, demonstrating advanced capabilities in multi-page questioning answering, explanation with evidence pages, and cross-page structure understanding. Additionally, compared to single-image MLLMs trained on similar data, our DocOwl2 achieves comparable single-page understanding performance with less than 20% of the visual tokens. DPZero: Private Fine-Tuning of Language Models without BackpropagationLiang Zhang, Bingcong Li, Kiran Koshy Thekumparampil et al. · eth-zurich
The widespread practice of fine-tuning large language models (LLMs) on domain-specific data faces two major challenges in memory and privacy. First, as the size of LLMs continues to grow, the memory demands of gradient-based training methods via backpropagation become prohibitively high. Second, given the tendency of LLMs to memorize training data, it is important to protect potentially sensitive information in the fine-tuning data from being regurgitated. Zeroth-order methods, which rely solely on forward passes, substantially reduce memory consumption during training. However, directly combining them with standard differentially private gradient descent suffers more as model size grows. To bridge this gap, we introduce DPZero, a novel private zeroth-order algorithm with nearly dimension-independent rates. The memory efficiency of DPZero is demonstrated in privately fine-tuning RoBERTa and OPT on several downstream tasks. Our code is available at https://github.com/Liang137/DPZero.

FreeCOS: Self-Supervised Learning from Fractals and Unlabeled Images for Curvilinear Object SegmentationTianyi Shi, Xiaohuan Ding, Liang Zhang et al.
Curvilinear object segmentation is critical for many applications. However, manually annotating curvilinear objects is very time-consuming and error-prone, yielding insufficiently available annotated datasets for existing supervised methods and domain adaptation methods. This paper proposes a self-supervised curvilinear object segmentation method that learns robust and distinctive features from fractals and unlabeled images (FreeCOS). The key contributions include a novel Fractal-FDA synthesis (FFS) module and a geometric information alignment (GIA) approach. FFS generates curvilinear structures based on the parametric Fractal L-system and integrates the generated structures into unlabeled images to obtain synthetic training images via Fourier Domain Adaptation. GIA reduces the intensity differences between the synthetic and unlabeled images by comparing the intensity order of a given pixel to the values of its nearby neighbors. Such image alignment can explicitly remove the dependency on absolute intensity values and enhance the inherent geometric characteristics which are common in both synthetic and real images. In addition, GIA aligns features of synthetic and real images via the prediction space adaptation loss (PSAL) and the curvilinear mask contrastive loss (CMCL). Extensive experimental results on four public datasets, i.e., XCAD, DRIVE, STARE and CrackTree demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art unsupervised methods, self-supervised methods and traditional methods by a large margin. With the rapid development of deep learning, training Big Models (BMs) for multiple downstream tasks becomes a popular paradigm. Researchers have achieved various outcomes in the construction of BMs and the BM application in many fields. At present, there is a lack of research work that sorts out the overall progress of BMs and guides the follow-up research. In this paper, we cover not only the BM technologies themselves but also the prerequisites for BM training and applications with BMs, dividing the BM review into four parts: Resource, Models, Key Technologies and Application. We introduce 16 specific BM-related topics in those four parts, they are Data, Knowledge, Computing System, Parallel Training System, Language Model, Vision Model, Multi-modal Model, Theory&Interpretability, Commonsense Reasoning, Reliability&Security, Governance, Evaluation, Machine Translation, Text Generation, Dialogue and Protein Research. In each topic, we summarize clearly the current studies and propose some future research directions. At the end of this paper, we conclude the further development of BMs in a more general view.

IAF-Net: Illumination-Adaptive Fusion for Low-Light Urban Road SegmentationBingtao Wang, Daojie Peng, Fulong Ma et al.
Semantic road segmentation is important for autonomous driving, but existing methods suffer severe performance degradation under low-light conditions. Many existing multi-modal fusion methods do not explicitly adapt to illumination-dependent changes in modality reliability, which can propagate degraded RGB features into the fused representation at night. We propose IAF-Net (Illumination-Adaptive Fusion Network), an end-to-end framework with illumination-adaptive fusion for robust road segmentation across different lighting conditions. It dynamically adjusts fusion weights of RGB and geometric features via the core Illumination-Adaptive Fusion (IAF) module, and enhances low-light feature selection with a brightness-modulated attention decoder. We also construct two dedicated datasets: nuScenes Nighttime Road Segmentation (nuScenes-NRS) and CARLA Multi-Weather Road Segmentation (CARLA-MWRS). Experiments on nuScenes-NRS show state-of-the-art overall performance among the compared methods, while CARLA-MWRS further validates robustness across adverse weather conditions. Ablation studies on a 40% training subset further highlight the importance of the IAF module, which provides the largest individual gain of 0.70% in MaxF.

DataLight: Offline Data-Driven Traffic Signal ControlLiang Zhang, Yutong Zhang, Jianming Deng et al.
Reinforcement learning (RL) has emerged as a promising solution for addressing traffic signal control (TSC) challenges. While most RL-based TSC systems typically employ an online approach, facilitating frequent active interaction with the environment, learning such strategies in the real world is impractical due to safety and risk concerns. To tackle these challenges, this study introduces an innovative offline data-driven approach, called DataLight. DataLight employs effective state representations and reward function by capturing vehicular speed information within the environment. It then segments roads to capture spatial information and further enhances the spatially segmented state representations with sequential modeling. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of DataLight, showcasing superior performance compared to both state-of-the-art online and offline TSC methods. DailyDVS-200: A Comprehensive Benchmark Dataset for Event-Based Action RecognitionQi Wang, Zhou Xu, Yuming Lin et al.
Neuromorphic sensors, specifically event cameras, revolutionize visual data acquisition by capturing pixel intensity changes with exceptional dynamic range, minimal latency, and energy efficiency, setting them apart from conventional frame-based cameras. The distinctive capabilities of event cameras have ignited significant interest in the domain of event-based action recognition, recognizing their vast potential for advancement. However, the development in this field is currently slowed by the lack of comprehensive, large-scale datasets, which are critical for developing robust recognition frameworks. To bridge this gap, we introduces DailyDVS-200, a meticulously curated benchmark dataset tailored for the event-based action recognition community. DailyDVS-200 is extensive, covering 200 action categories across real-world scenarios, recorded by 47 participants, and comprises more than 22,000 event sequences. This dataset is designed to reflect a broad spectrum of action types, scene complexities, and data acquisition diversity. Each sequence in the dataset is annotated with 14 attributes, ensuring a detailed characterization of the recorded actions. Moreover, DailyDVS-200 is structured to facilitate a wide range of research paths, offering a solid foundation for both validating existing approaches and inspiring novel methodologies. By setting a new benchmark in the field, we challenge the current limitations of neuromorphic data processing and invite a surge of new approaches in event-based action recognition techniques, which paves the way for future explorations in neuromorphic computing and beyond. Bring Your Own Algorithm for Optimal Differentially Private Stochastic Minimax OptimizationLiang Zhang, Kiran Koshy Thekumparampil, Sewoong Oh et al. · eth-zurich
We study differentially private (DP) algorithms for smooth stochastic minimax optimization, with stochastic minimization as a byproduct. The holy grail of these settings is to guarantee the optimal trade-off between the privacy and the excess population loss, using an algorithm with a linear time-complexity in the number of training samples. We provide a general framework for solving differentially private stochastic minimax optimization (DP-SMO) problems, which enables the practitioners to bring their own base optimization algorithm and use it as a black-box to obtain the near-optimal privacy-loss trade-off. Our framework is inspired from the recently proposed Phased-ERM method [22] for nonsmooth differentially private stochastic convex optimization (DP-SCO), which exploits the stability of the empirical risk minimization (ERM) for the privacy guarantee. The flexibility of our approach enables us to sidestep the requirement that the base algorithm needs to have bounded sensitivity, and allows the use of sophisticated variance-reduced accelerated methods to achieve near-linear time-complexity. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first near-linear time algorithms with near-optimal guarantees on the population duality gap for smooth DP-SMO, when the objective is (strongly-)convex--(strongly-)concave. Additionally, based on our flexible framework, we enrich the family of near-linear time algorithms for smooth DP-SCO with the near-optimal privacy-loss trade-off.

MPMQA: Multimodal Question Answering on Product ManualsLiang Zhang, Anwen Hu, Jing Zhang et al.
Visual contents, such as illustrations and images, play a big role in product manual understanding. Existing Product Manual Question Answering (PMQA) datasets tend to ignore visual contents and only retain textual parts. In this work, to emphasize the importance of multimodal contents, we propose a Multimodal Product Manual Question Answering (MPMQA) task. For each question, MPMQA requires the model not only to process multimodal contents but also to provide multimodal answers. To support MPMQA, a large-scale dataset PM209 is constructed with human annotations, which contains 209 product manuals from 27 well-known consumer electronic brands. Human annotations include 6 types of semantic regions for manual contents and 22,021 pairs of question and answer. Especially, each answer consists of a textual sentence and related visual regions from manuals. Taking into account the length of product manuals and the fact that a question is always related to a small number of pages, MPMQA can be naturally split into two subtasks: retrieving most related pages and then generating multimodal answers. We further propose a unified model that can perform these two subtasks all together and achieve comparable performance with multiple task-specific models. Region Embedding with Intra and Inter-View Contrastive LearningLiang Zhang, Cheng Long, Gao Cong
Unsupervised region representation learning aims to extract dense and effective features from unlabeled urban data. While some efforts have been made for solving this problem based on multiple views, existing methods are still insufficient in extracting representations in a view and/or incorporating representations from different views. Motivated by the success of contrastive learning for representation learning, we propose to leverage it for multi-view region representation learning and design a model called ReMVC (Region Embedding with Multi-View Contrastive Learning) by following two guidelines: i) comparing a region with others within each view for effective representation extraction and ii) comparing a region with itself across different views for cross-view information sharing. We design the intra-view contrastive learning module which helps to learn distinguished region embeddings and the inter-view contrastive learning module which serves as a soft co-regularizer to constrain the embedding parameters and transfer knowledge across multi-views. We exploit the learned region embeddings in two downstream tasks named land usage clustering and region popularity prediction. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model achieves impressive improvements compared with seven state-of-the-art baseline methods, and the margins are over 30% in the land usage clustering task.

Contrastive Brain Network Learning via Hierarchical Signed Graph Pooling ModelHaoteng Tang, Guixiang Ma, Lei Guo et al.
Recently brain networks have been widely adopted to study brain dynamics, brain development and brain diseases. Graph representation learning techniques on brain functional networks can facilitate the discovery of novel biomarkers for clinical phenotypes and neurodegenerative diseases. However, current graph learning techniques have several issues on brain network mining. Firstly, most current graph learning models are designed for unsigned graph, which hinders the analysis of many signed network data (e.g., brain functional networks). Meanwhile, the insufficiency of brain network data limits the model performance on clinical phenotypes predictions. Moreover, few of current graph learning model is interpretable, which may not be capable to provide biological insights for model outcomes. Here, we propose an interpretable hierarchical signed graph representation learning model to extract graph-level representations from brain functional networks, which can be used for different prediction tasks. In order to further improve the model performance, we also propose a new strategy to augment functional brain network data for contrastive learning. We evaluate this framework on different classification and regression tasks using the data from HCP and OASIS. Our results from extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model compared to several state-of-the-art techniques. Additionally, we use graph saliency maps, derived from these prediction tasks, to demonstrate detection and interpretation of phenotypic biomarkers.

UE4-NeRF:Neural Radiance Field for Real-Time Rendering of Large-Scale SceneJiaming Gu, Minchao Jiang, Hongsheng Li et al.
Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) is a novel implicit 3D reconstruction method that shows immense potential and has been gaining increasing attention. It enables the reconstruction of 3D scenes solely from a set of photographs. However, its real-time rendering capability, especially for interactive real-time rendering of large-scale scenes, still has significant limitations. To address these challenges, in this paper, we propose a novel neural rendering system called UE4-NeRF, specifically designed for real-time rendering of large-scale scenes. We partitioned each large scene into different sub-NeRFs. In order to represent the partitioned independent scene, we initialize polygonal meshes by constructing multiple regular octahedra within the scene and the vertices of the polygonal faces are continuously optimized during the training process. Drawing inspiration from Level of Detail (LOD) techniques, we trained meshes of varying levels of detail for different observation levels. Our approach combines with the rasterization pipeline in Unreal Engine 4 (UE4), achieving real-time rendering of large-scale scenes at 4K resolution with a frame rate of up to 43 FPS. Rendering within UE4 also facilitates scene editing in subsequent stages. Furthermore, through experiments, we have demonstrated that our method achieves rendering quality comparable to state-of-the-art approaches. Project page: https://jamchaos.github.io/UE4-NeRF/.

Sketch Input Method Editor: A Comprehensive Dataset and Methodology for Systematic Input RecognitionGuangming Zhu, Siyuan Wang, Qing Cheng et al.
With the recent surge in the use of touchscreen devices, free-hand sketching has emerged as a promising modality for human-computer interaction. While previous research has focused on tasks such as recognition, retrieval, and generation of familiar everyday objects, this study aims to create a Sketch Input Method Editor (SketchIME) specifically designed for a professional C4I system. Within this system, sketches are utilized as low-fidelity prototypes for recommending standardized symbols in the creation of comprehensive situation maps. This paper also presents a systematic dataset comprising 374 specialized sketch types, and proposes a simultaneous recognition and segmentation architecture with multilevel supervision between recognition and segmentation to improve performance and enhance interpretability. By incorporating few-shot domain adaptation and class-incremental learning, the network's ability to adapt to new users and extend to new task-specific classes is significantly enhanced. Results from experiments conducted on both the proposed dataset and the SPG dataset illustrate the superior performance of the proposed architecture. Road Network Representation Learning: A Dual Graph based ApproachLiang Zhang, Cheng Long
Road network is a critical infrastructure powering many applications including transportation, mobility and logistics in real life. To leverage the input of a road network across these different applications, it is necessary to learn the representations of the roads in the form of vectors, which is named \emph{road network representation learning} (RNRL). While several models have been proposed for RNRL, they capture the pairwise relationships/connections among roads only (i.e., as a simple graph), and fail to capture among roads the high-order relationships (e.g., those roads that jointly form a local region usually have similar features such as speed limit) and long-range relationships (e.g., some roads that are far apart may have similar semantics such as being roads in residential areas). Motivated by this, we propose to construct a \emph{hypergraph}, where each hyperedge corresponds to a set of multiple roads forming a region. The constructed hypergraph would naturally capture the high-order relationships among roads with hyperedges. We then allow information propagation via both the edges in the simple graph and the hyperedges in the hypergraph in a graph neural network context. The graph reconstruction and hypergraph reconstruction tasks are conventional ones and can capture structural information. The hyperedge classification task can capture long-range relationships between pairs of roads that belong to hyperedges with the same label. We call the resulting model \emph{HyperRoad}. We further extend HyperRoad to problem settings when additional inputs of road attributes and/or trajectories that are generated on the roads are available.

Towards Better Document-level Relation Extraction via Iterative InferenceLiang Zhang, Jinsong Su, Yidong Chen et al.
Document-level relation extraction (RE) aims to extract the relations between entities from the input document that usually containing many difficultly-predicted entity pairs whose relations can only be predicted through relational inference. Existing methods usually directly predict the relations of all entity pairs of input document in a one-pass manner, ignoring the fact that predictions of some entity pairs heavily depend on the predicted results of other pairs. To deal with this issue, in this paper, we propose a novel document-level RE model with iterative inference. Our model is mainly composed of two modules: 1) a base module expected to provide preliminary relation predictions on entity pairs; 2) an inference module introduced to refine these preliminary predictions by iteratively dealing with difficultly-predicted entity pairs depending on other pairs in an easy-to-hard manner. Unlike previous methods which only consider feature information of entity pairs, our inference module is equipped with two Extended Cross Attention units, allowing it to exploit both feature information and previous predictions of entity pairs during relational inference. Furthermore, we adopt a two-stage strategy to train our model. At the first stage, we only train our base module. During the second stage, we train the whole model, where contrastive learning is introduced to enhance the training of inference module. Experimental results on three commonly-used datasets show that our model consistently outperforms other competitive baselines.

Generalization Bounds of Nonconvex-(Strongly)-Concave Stochastic Minimax OptimizationSiqi Zhang, Yifan Hu, Liang Zhang et al. · eth-zurich
This paper takes an initial step to systematically investigate the generalization bounds of algorithms for solving nonconvex-(strongly)-concave (NC-SC/NC-C) stochastic minimax optimization measured by the stationarity of primal functions. We first establish algorithm-agnostic generalization bounds via uniform convergence between the empirical minimax problem and the population minimax problem. The sample complexities for achieving $ε$-generalization are $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(dκ^2ε^{-2})$ and $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(dε^{-4})$ for NC-SC and NC-C settings, respectively, where $d$ is the dimension and $κ$ is the condition number. We further study the algorithm-dependent generalization bounds via stability arguments of algorithms. In particular, we introduce a novel stability notion for minimax problems and build a connection between generalization bounds and the stability notion. As a result, we establish algorithm-dependent generalization bounds for stochastic gradient descent ascent (SGDA) algorithm and the more general sampling-determined algorithms.

Trigger-GNN: A Trigger-Based Graph Neural Network for Nested Named Entity RecognitionYuan Sui, Fanyang Bu, Yingting Hu et al.
Nested named entity recognition (NER) aims to identify the entity boundaries and recognize categories of the named entities in a complex hierarchical sentence. Some works have been done using character-level, word-level, or lexicon-level based models. However, such researches ignore the role of the complementary annotations. In this paper, we propose a trigger-based graph neural network (Trigger-GNN) to leverage the nested NER. It obtains the complementary annotation embeddings through entity trigger encoding and semantic matching, and tackle nested entity utilizing an efficient graph message passing architecture, aggregation-update mode. We posit that using entity triggers as external annotations can add in complementary supervision signals on the whole sentences. It helps the model to learn and generalize more efficiently and cost-effectively. Experiments show that the Trigger-GNN consistently outperforms the baselines on four public NER datasets, and it can effectively alleviate the nested NER.

Knowing What to Solve Before How: Preplan Empowered LLM Mathematical ReasoningShaojie Wang, Liang Zhang
Current plan-based reasoning methods improve large language models (LLMs) by inserting a planning stage before execution, giving rise to the question $\rightarrow$ plan $\rightarrow$ cot paradigm. While effective, a closer examination reveals an inherent paradigm-level gap: both the planning and its execution stages decide how to solve a problem, while the prior question of what to solve; recognizing the problem type, the applicable tools, and the foreseeable pitfalls; remains entirely implicit. To bridge this gap, we propose PPC (Preplan-Plan-CoT), a framework that introduces an explicit problem-understanding stage, the preplan, yielding a new question $\rightarrow$ preplan $\rightarrow$ plan $\rightarrow$ cot paradigm. Realizing this paradigm requires safeguarding the conceptual integrity of preplan at both ends. Specifically, we design a three-stage synthesis pipeline with a spoiler-score detector that filters out leakage and spoiler failures to build clean preplan supervision, and a composite GRPO reward enforces that the generated plan genuinely follows from the preplan. Experiments across four backbones and five mathematical reasoning benchmarks show that PPC achieves the best results on 39 of 40 metrics, improving maj@16 and pass@16 by +2.23 and +3.06 over the strongest baseline without introducing additional inference token overhead.

Learning performance data, such as correct or incorrect responses to questions in Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) is crucial for tracking and assessing the learners' progress and mastery of knowledge. However, the issue of data sparsity, characterized by unexplored questions and missing attempts, hampers accurate assessment and the provision of tailored, personalized instruction within ITSs. This paper proposes using the Generative Adversarial Imputation Networks (GAIN) framework to impute sparse learning performance data, reconstructed into a three-dimensional (3D) tensor representation across the dimensions of learners, questions and attempts. Our customized GAIN-based method computational process imputes sparse data in a 3D tensor space, significantly enhanced by convolutional neural networks for its input and output layers. This adaptation also includes the use of a least squares loss function for optimization and aligns the shapes of the input and output with the dimensions of the questions-attempts matrices along the learners' dimension. Through extensive experiments on six datasets from various ITSs, including AutoTutor, ASSISTments and MATHia, we demonstrate that the GAIN approach generally outperforms existing methods such as tensor factorization and other generative adversarial network (GAN) based approaches in terms of imputation accuracy. This finding enhances comprehensive learning data modeling and analytics in AI-based education.

Multi-Granularity Mutual Refinement Network for Zero-Shot LearningNing Wang, Long Yu, Cong Hua et al.
Zero-shot learning (ZSL) aims to recognize unseen classes with zero samples by transferring semantic knowledge from seen classes. Current approaches typically correlate global visual features with semantic information (i.e., attributes) or align local visual region features with corresponding attributes to enhance visual-semantic interactions. Although effective, these methods often overlook the intrinsic interactions between local region features, which can further improve the acquisition of transferable and explicit visual features. In this paper, we propose a network named Multi-Granularity Mutual Refinement Network (Mg-MRN), which refine discriminative and transferable visual features by learning decoupled multi-granularity features and cross-granularity feature interactions. Specifically, we design a multi-granularity feature extraction module to learn region-level discriminative features through decoupled region feature mining. Then, a cross-granularity feature fusion module strengthens the inherent interactions between region features of varying granularities. This module enhances the discriminability of representations at each granularity level by integrating region representations from adjacent hierarchies, further improving ZSL recognition performance. Extensive experiments on three popular ZSL benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority and competitiveness of our proposed Mg-MRN method. Graph Edit Distance Learning via Different AttentionJiaxi Lv, Liang Zhang, Yi Huang et al.
Recently, more and more research has focused on using Graph Neural Networks (GNN) to solve the Graph Similarity Computation problem (GSC), i.e., computing the Graph Edit Distance (GED) between two graphs. These methods treat GSC as an end-to-end learnable task, and the core of their architecture is the feature fusion modules to interact with the features of two graphs. Existing methods consider that graph-level embedding is difficult to capture the differences in local small structures between two graphs, and thus perform fine-grained feature fusion on node-level embedding can improve the accuracy, but leads to greater time and memory consumption in the training and inference phases. However, this paper proposes a novel graph-level fusion module Different Attention (DiffAtt), and demonstrates that graph-level fusion embeddings can substantially outperform these complex node-level fusion embeddings. We posit that the relative difference structure of the two graphs plays an important role in calculating their GED values. To this end, DiffAtt uses the difference between two graph-level embeddings as an attentional mechanism to capture the graph structural difference of the two graphs. Based on DiffAtt, a new GSC method, named Graph Edit Distance Learning via Different Attention (REDRAFT), is proposed, and experimental results demonstrate that REDRAFT achieves state-of-the-art performance in 23 out of 25 metrics in five benchmark datasets. Especially on MSE, it respectively outperforms the second best by 19.9%, 48.8%, 29.1%, 31.6%, and 2.2%. Moreover, we propose a quantitative test Remaining Subgraph Alignment Test (RESAT) to verify that among all graph-level fusion modules, the fusion embedding generated by DiffAtt can best capture the structural differences between two graphs.

NC-DRE: Leveraging Non-entity Clue Information for Document-level Relation ExtractionLiang Zhang, Yidong Cheng
Document-level relation extraction (RE), which requires reasoning on multiple entities in different sentences to identify complex inter-sentence relations, is more challenging than sentence-level RE. To extract the complex inter-sentence relations, previous studies usually employ graph neural networks (GNN) to perform inference upon heterogeneous document-graphs. Despite their great successes, these graph-based methods, which normally only consider the words within the mentions in the process of building graphs and reasoning, tend to ignore the non-entity clue words that are not in the mentions but provide important clue information for relation reasoning. To alleviate this problem, we treat graph-based document-level RE models as an encoder-decoder framework, which typically uses a pre-trained language model as the encoder and a GNN model as the decoder, and propose a novel graph-based model NC-DRE that introduces decoder-to-encoder attention mechanism to leverage Non-entity Clue information for Document-level Relation Extraction.

A Densely Connected Criss-Cross Attention Network for Document-level Relation ExtractionLiang Zhang, Yidong Cheng
Document-level relation extraction (RE) aims to identify relations between two entities in a given document. Compared with its sentence-level counterpart, document-level RE requires complex reasoning. Previous research normally completed reasoning through information propagation on the mention-level or entity-level document-graph, but rarely considered reasoning at the entity-pair-level.In this paper, we propose a novel model, called Densely Connected Criss-Cross Attention Network (Dense-CCNet), for document-level RE, which can complete logical reasoning at the entity-pair-level. Specifically, the Dense-CCNet performs entity-pair-level logical reasoning through the Criss-Cross Attention (CCA), which can collect contextual information in horizontal and vertical directions on the entity-pair matrix to enhance the corresponding entity-pair representation. In addition, we densely connect multiple layers of the CCA to simultaneously capture the features of single-hop and multi-hop logical reasoning.We evaluate our Dense-CCNet model on three public document-level RE datasets, DocRED, CDR, and GDA. Experimental results demonstrate that our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on these three datasets.

Realizing the potential of neural video codecs on mobile devices is a big technological challenge due to the computational complexity of deep networks and the power-constrained mobile hardware. We demonstrate practical feasibility by leveraging Qualcomm's technology and innovation, bridging the gap from neural network-based codec simulations running on wall-powered workstations, to real-time operation on a mobile device powered by Snapdragon technology. We show the first-ever inter-frame neural video decoder running on a commercial mobile phone, decoding high-definition videos in real-time while maintaining a low bitrate and high visual quality.

A Masked Image Reconstruction Network for Document-level Relation ExtractionLiang Zhang, Yidong Cheng
Document-level relation extraction aims to extract relations among entities within a document. Compared with its sentence-level counterpart, Document-level relation extraction requires inference over multiple sentences to extract complex relational triples. Previous research normally complete reasoning through information propagation on the mention-level or entity-level document-graphs, regardless of the correlations between the relationships. In this paper, we propose a novel Document-level Relation Extraction model based on a Masked Image Reconstruction network (DRE-MIR), which models inference as a masked image reconstruction problem to capture the correlations between relationships. Specifically, we first leverage an encoder module to get the features of entities and construct the entity-pair matrix based on the features. After that, we look on the entity-pair matrix as an image and then randomly mask it and restore it through an inference module to capture the correlations between the relationships. We evaluate our model on three public document-level relation extraction datasets, i.e. DocRED, CDR, and GDA. Experimental results demonstrate that our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on these three datasets and has excellent robustness against the noises during the inference process.

DynamicLight: Two-Stage Dynamic Traffic Signal TimingLiang Zhang, Yutong Zhang, Shubin Xie et al.
Reinforcement learning (RL) is gaining popularity as an effective approach for traffic signal control (TSC) and is increasingly applied in this domain. However, most existing RL methodologies are confined to a single-stage TSC framework, primarily focusing on selecting an appropriate traffic signal phase at fixed action intervals, leading to inflexible and less adaptable phase durations. To address such limitations, we introduce a novel two-stage TSC framework named DynamicLight. This framework initiates with a phase control strategy responsible for determining the optimal traffic phase, followed by a duration control strategy tasked with determining the corresponding phase duration. Experimental results show that DynamicLight outperforms state-of-the-art TSC models and exhibits exceptional model generalization capabilities. Additionally, the robustness and potential for real-world implementation of DynamicLight are further demonstrated and validated through various DynamicLight variants. Using Features at Multiple Temporal and Spatial Resolutions to Predict Human Behavior in Real TimeLiang Zhang, Justin Lieffers, Adarsh Pyarelal
When performing complex tasks, humans naturally reason at multiple temporal and spatial resolutions simultaneously. We contend that for an artificially intelligent agent to effectively model human teammates, i.e., demonstrate computational theory of mind (ToM), it should do the same. In this paper, we present an approach for integrating high and low-resolution spatial and temporal information to predict human behavior in real time and evaluate it on data collected from human subjects performing simulated urban search and rescue (USAR) missions in a Minecraft-based environment. Our model composes neural networks for high and low-resolution feature extraction with a neural network for behavior prediction, with all three networks trained simultaneously. The high-resolution extractor encodes dynamically changing goals robustly by taking as input the Manhattan distance difference between the humans' Minecraft avatars and candidate goals in the environment for the latest few actions, computed from a high-resolution gridworld representation. In contrast, the low-resolution extractor encodes participants' historical behavior using a historical state matrix computed from a low-resolution graph representation. Through supervised learning, our model acquires a robust prior for human behavior prediction, and can effectively deal with long-term observations. Our experimental results demonstrate that our method significantly improves prediction accuracy compared to approaches that only use high-resolution information.

Optimizing and Fine-tuning Large Language Model for Urban RenewalXi Wang, Xianyao Ling, Tom Zhang et al.
This study aims to innovatively explore adaptive applications of large language models (LLM) in urban renewal. It also aims to improve its performance and text generation quality for knowledge question-answering (QA) tasks. Based on the ChatGLM, we automatically generate QA datasets using urban renewal scientific literature corpora in a self-instruct manner and then conduct joint fine-tuning training on the model using the Prefix and LoRA fine-tuning methods to create an LLM for urban renewal. By guiding the LLM to automatically generate QA data based on prompt words and given text, it is possible to quickly obtain datasets in the urban renewal field and provide data support for the fine-tuning training of LLMs. The experimental results show that the joint fine-tuning training method proposed in this study can significantly improve the performance of LLM on the QA tasks. Compared with LoRA fine-tuning, the method improves the Bleu and Rouge metrics on the test by about 5%; compared with the model before fine-tuning, the method improves the Bleu and Rouge metrics by about 15%-20%. This study demonstrates the effectiveness and superiority of the joint fine-tuning method using Prefix and LoRA for ChatGLM in the urban renewal knowledge QA tasks. It provides a new approach for fine-tuning LLMs on urban renewal-related tasks.

Artificial Intelligence System for Detection and Screening of Cardiac Abnormalities using Electrocardiogram ImagesDeyun Zhang, Shijia Geng, Yang Zhou et al.
The artificial intelligence (AI) system has achieved expert-level performance in electrocardiogram (ECG) signal analysis. However, in underdeveloped countries or regions where the healthcare information system is imperfect, only paper ECGs can be provided. Analysis of real-world ECG images (photos or scans of paper ECGs) remains challenging due to complex environments or interference. In this study, we present an AI system developed to detect and screen cardiac abnormalities (CAs) from real-world ECG images. The system was evaluated on a large dataset of 52,357 patients from multiple regions and populations across the world. On the detection task, the AI system obtained area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) of 0.996 (hold-out test), 0.994 (external test 1), 0.984 (external test 2), and 0.979 (external test 3), respectively. Meanwhile, the detection results of AI system showed a strong correlation with the diagnosis of cardiologists (cardiologist 1 (R=0.794, p<1e-3), cardiologist 2 (R=0.812, p<1e-3)). On the screening task, the AI system achieved AUCs of 0.894 (hold-out test) and 0.850 (external test). The screening performance of the AI system was better than that of the cardiologists (AI system (0.846) vs. cardiologist 1 (0.520) vs. cardiologist 2 (0.480)). Our study demonstrates the feasibility of an accurate, objective, easy-to-use, fast, and low-cost AI system for CA detection and screening. The system has the potential to be used by healthcare professionals, caregivers, and general users to assess CAs based on real-world ECG images.

MobileNVC: Real-time 1080p Neural Video Compression on a Mobile DeviceTies van Rozendaal, Tushar Singhal, Hoang Le et al.
Neural video codecs have recently become competitive with standard codecs such as HEVC in the low-delay setting. However, most neural codecs are large floating-point networks that use pixel-dense warping operations for temporal modeling, making them too computationally expensive for deployment on mobile devices. Recent work has demonstrated that running a neural decoder in real time on mobile is feasible, but shows this only for 720p RGB video. This work presents the first neural video codec that decodes 1080p YUV420 video in real time on a mobile device. Our codec relies on two major contributions. First, we design an efficient codec that uses a block-based motion compensation algorithm available on the warping core of the mobile accelerator, and we show how to quantize this model to integer precision. Second, we implement a fast decoder pipeline that concurrently runs neural network components on the neural signal processor, parallel entropy coding on the mobile GPU, and warping on the warping core. Our codec outperforms the previous on-device codec by a large margin with up to 48% BD-rate savings, while reducing the MAC count on the receiver side by $10 \times$. We perform a careful ablation to demonstrate the effect of the introduced motion compensation scheme, and ablate the effect of model quantization.

Enhancing Interpretability in Deep Reinforcement Learning through Semantic ClusteringLiang Zhang, Justin Lieffers, Adarsh Pyarelal
In this paper, we explore semantic clustering properties of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to improve its interpretability and deepen our understanding of its internal semantic organization. In this context, semantic clustering refers to the ability of neural networks to cluster inputs based on their semantic similarity in the feature space. We propose a DRL architecture that incorporates a novel semantic clustering module that combines feature dimensionality reduction with online clustering. This module integrates seamlessly into the DRL training pipeline, addressing the instability of t-SNE and eliminating the need for extensive manual annotation inherent to prior semantic analysis methods. We experimentally validate the effectiveness of the proposed module and demonstrate its ability to reveal semantic clustering properties within DRL. Furthermore, we introduce new analytical methods based on these properties to provide insights into the hierarchical structure of policies and semantic organization within the feature space. Accommodating Audio Modality in CLIP for Multimodal ProcessingLudan Ruan, Anwen Hu, Yuqing Song et al.
Multimodal processing has attracted much attention lately especially with the success of pre-training. However, the exploration has mainly focused on vision-language pre-training, as introducing more modalities can greatly complicate model design and optimization. In this paper, we extend the stateof-the-art Vision-Language model CLIP to accommodate the audio modality for Vision-Language-Audio multimodal processing. Specifically, we apply inter-modal and intra-modal contrastive learning to explore the correlation between audio and other modalities in addition to the inner characteristics of the audio modality. Moreover, we further design an audio type token to dynamically learn different audio information type for different scenarios, as both verbal and nonverbal heterogeneous information is conveyed in general audios. Our proposed CLIP4VLA model is validated in different downstream tasks including video retrieval and video captioning, and achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the benchmark datasets of MSR-VTT, VATEX, and Audiocaps.

A Token-level Contrastive Framework for Sign Language TranslationBiao Fu, Peigen Ye, Liang Zhang et al.
Sign Language Translation (SLT) is a promising technology to bridge the communication gap between the deaf and the hearing people. Recently, researchers have adopted Neural Machine Translation (NMT) methods, which usually require large-scale corpus for training, to achieve SLT. However, the publicly available SLT corpus is very limited, which causes the collapse of the token representations and the inaccuracy of the generated tokens. To alleviate this issue, we propose ConSLT, a novel token-level \textbf{Con}trastive learning framework for \textbf{S}ign \textbf{L}anguage \textbf{T}ranslation , which learns effective token representations by incorporating token-level contrastive learning into the SLT decoding process. Concretely, ConSLT treats each token and its counterpart generated by different dropout masks as positive pairs during decoding, and then randomly samples $K$ tokens in the vocabulary that are not in the current sentence to construct negative examples. We conduct comprehensive experiments on two benchmarks (PHOENIX14T and CSL-Daily) for both end-to-end and cascaded settings. The experimental results demonstrate that ConSLT can achieve better translation quality than the strong baselines.

Landing AI on Networks: An equipment vendor viewpoint on Autonomous Driving NetworksDario Rossi, Liang Zhang
The tremendous achievements of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in computer vision, natural language processing, games and robotics, has extended the reach of the AI hype to other fields: in telecommunication networks, the long term vision is to let AI fully manage, and autonomously drive, all aspects of network operation. In this industry vision paper, we discuss challenges and opportunities of Autonomous Driving Network (ADN) driven by AI technologies. To understand how AI can be successfully landed in current and future networks, we start by outlining challenges that are specific to the networking domain, putting them in perspective with advances that AI has achieved in other fields. We then present a system view, clarifying how AI can be fitted in the network architecture. We finally discuss current achievements as well as future promises of AI in networks, mentioning a roadmap to avoid bumps in the road that leads to true large-scale deployment of AI technologies in networks.

Optimal Guarantees for Algorithmic Reproducibility and Gradient Complexity in Convex OptimizationLiang Zhang, Junchi Yang, Amin Karbasi et al. · eth-zurich
Algorithmic reproducibility measures the deviation in outputs of machine learning algorithms upon minor changes in the training process. Previous work suggests that first-order methods would need to trade-off convergence rate (gradient complexity) for better reproducibility. In this work, we challenge this perception and demonstrate that both optimal reproducibility and near-optimal convergence guarantees can be achieved for smooth convex minimization and smooth convex-concave minimax problems under various error-prone oracle settings. Particularly, given the inexact initialization oracle, our regularization-based algorithms achieve the best of both worlds - optimal reproducibility and near-optimal gradient complexity - for minimization and minimax optimization. With the inexact gradient oracle, the near-optimal guarantees also hold for minimax optimization. Additionally, with the stochastic gradient oracle, we show that stochastic gradient descent ascent is optimal in terms of both reproducibility and gradient complexity. We believe our results contribute to an enhanced understanding of the reproducibility-convergence trade-off in the context of convex optimization.

Explore and Tell: Embodied Visual Captioning in 3D EnvironmentsAnwen Hu, Shizhe Chen, Liang Zhang et al.
While current visual captioning models have achieved impressive performance, they often assume that the image is well-captured and provides a complete view of the scene. In real-world scenarios, however, a single image may not offer a good viewpoint, hindering fine-grained scene understanding. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel task called Embodied Captioning, which equips visual captioning models with navigation capabilities, enabling them to actively explore the scene and reduce visual ambiguity from suboptimal viewpoints. Specifically, starting at a random viewpoint, an agent must navigate the environment to gather information from different viewpoints and generate a comprehensive paragraph describing all objects in the scene. To support this task, we build the ET-Cap dataset with Kubric simulator, consisting of 10K 3D scenes with cluttered objects and three annotated paragraphs per scene. We propose a Cascade Embodied Captioning model (CaBOT), which comprises of a navigator and a captioner, to tackle this task. The navigator predicts which actions to take in the environment, while the captioner generates a paragraph description based on the whole navigation trajectory. Zeroth-Order Optimization at the Edge of StabilityMinhak Song, Liang Zhang, Bingcong Li et al. · eth-zurich
Zeroth-order (ZO) methods are widely used when gradients are unavailable or prohibitively expensive, including black-box learning and memory-efficient fine-tuning of large models, yet their optimization dynamics in deep learning remain underexplored. In this work, we provide an explicit step size condition that exactly captures the (mean-square) linear stability of a family of ZO methods based on the standard two-point estimator. Our characterization reveals a sharp contrast with first-order (FO) methods: whereas FO stability is governed solely by the largest Hessian eigenvalue, mean-square stability of ZO methods depends on the entire Hessian spectrum. Since computing the full Hessian spectrum is infeasible in practical neural network training, we further derive tractable stability bounds that depend only on the largest eigenvalue and the Hessian trace. Empirically, we find that full-batch ZO methods operate at the edge of stability: ZO-GD, ZO-GDM, and ZO-Adam consistently stabilize near the predicted stability boundary across a range of deep learning training problems. Our results highlight an implicit regularization effect specific to ZO methods, where large step sizes primarily regularize the Hessian trace, whereas in FO methods they regularize the top eigenvalue.

Spatial Parsing and Dynamic Temporal Pooling networks for Human-Object Interaction detectionHongsheng Li, Guangming Zhu, Wu Zhen et al.
The key of Human-Object Interaction(HOI) recognition is to infer the relationship between human and objects. Recently, the image's Human-Object Interaction(HOI) detection has made significant progress. However, there is still room for improvement in video HOI detection performance. Existing one-stage methods use well-designed end-to-end networks to detect a video segment and directly predict an interaction. It makes the model learning and further optimization of the network more complex. This paper introduces the Spatial Parsing and Dynamic Temporal Pooling (SPDTP) network, which takes the entire video as a spatio-temporal graph with human and object nodes as input. Unlike existing methods, our proposed network predicts the difference between interactive and non-interactive pairs through explicit spatial parsing, and then performs interaction recognition. Moreover, we propose a learnable and differentiable Dynamic Temporal Module(DTM) to emphasize the keyframes of the video and suppress the redundant frame. Furthermore, the experimental results show that SPDTP can pay more attention to active human-object pairs and valid keyframes. Overall, we achieve state-of-the-art performance on CAD-120 dataset and Something-Else dataset.

TrajPAC: Towards Robustness Verification of Pedestrian Trajectory Prediction ModelsLiang Zhang, Nathaniel Xu, Pengfei Yang et al.
Robust pedestrian trajectory forecasting is crucial to developing safe autonomous vehicles. Although previous works have studied adversarial robustness in the context of trajectory forecasting, some significant issues remain unaddressed. In this work, we try to tackle these crucial problems. Firstly, the previous definitions of robustness in trajectory prediction are ambiguous. We thus provide formal definitions for two kinds of robustness, namely label robustness and pure robustness. Secondly, as previous works fail to consider robustness about all points in a disturbance interval, we utilise a probably approximately correct (PAC) framework for robustness verification. Additionally, this framework can not only identify potential counterexamples, but also provides interpretable analyses of the original methods. Our approach is applied using a prototype tool named TrajPAC. With TrajPAC, we evaluate the robustness of four state-of-the-art trajectory prediction models -- Trajectron++, MemoNet, AgentFormer, and MID -- on trajectories from five scenes of the ETH/UCY dataset and scenes of the Stanford Drone Dataset. Using our framework, we also experimentally study various factors that could influence robustness performance.

Learning Descriptive Image Captioning via Semipermeable Maximum Likelihood EstimationZihao Yue, Anwen Hu, Liang Zhang et al.
Image captioning aims to describe visual content in natural language. As 'a picture is worth a thousand words', there could be various correct descriptions for an image. However, with maximum likelihood estimation as the training objective, the captioning model is penalized whenever its prediction mismatches with the label. For instance, when the model predicts a word expressing richer semantics than the label, it will be penalized and optimized to prefer more concise expressions, referred to as conciseness optimization. In contrast, predictions that are more concise than labels lead to richness optimization. Such conflicting optimization directions could eventually result in the model generating general descriptions. In this work, we introduce Semipermeable MaxImum Likelihood Estimation (SMILE), which allows richness optimization while blocking conciseness optimization, thus encouraging the model to generate longer captions with more details. Extensive experiments on two mainstream image captioning datasets MSCOCO and Flickr30K demonstrate that SMILE significantly enhances the descriptiveness of generated captions. We further provide in-depth investigations to facilitate a better understanding of how SMILE works.

English-based Vision-Language Pre-training (VLP) has achieved great success in various downstream tasks. Some efforts have been taken to generalize this success to non-English languages through Multilingual Vision-Language Pre-training (M-VLP). However, due to the large number of languages, M-VLP models often require huge computing resources and cannot be flexibly extended to new languages. In this work, we propose a \textbf{M}ulti\textbf{L}ingual \textbf{A}cquisition (MLA) framework that can easily generalize a monolingual Vision-Language Pre-training model into multilingual. Specifically, we design a lightweight language acquisition encoder based on state-of-the-art monolingual VLP models. We further propose a two-stage training strategy to optimize the language acquisition encoder, namely the Native Language Transfer stage and the Language Exposure stage. With much less multilingual training data and computing resources, our model achieves state-of-the-art performance on multilingual image-text and video-text retrieval benchmarks.

AntM$^{2}$C: A Large Scale Dataset For Multi-Scenario Multi-Modal CTR PredictionZhaoxin Huan, Ke Ding, Ang Li et al.
Click-through rate (CTR) prediction is a crucial issue in recommendation systems. There has been an emergence of various public CTR datasets. However, existing datasets primarily suffer from the following limitations. Firstly, users generally click different types of items from multiple scenarios, and modeling from multiple scenarios can provide a more comprehensive understanding of users. Existing datasets only include data for the same type of items from a single scenario. Secondly, multi-modal features are essential in multi-scenario prediction as they address the issue of inconsistent ID encoding between different scenarios. The existing datasets are based on ID features and lack multi-modal features. Third, a large-scale dataset can provide a more reliable evaluation of models, fully reflecting the performance differences between models. The scale of existing datasets is around 100 million, which is relatively small compared to the real-world CTR prediction. To address these limitations, we propose AntM$^{2}$C, a Multi-Scenario Multi-Modal CTR dataset based on industrial data from Alipay. Specifically, AntM$^{2}$C provides the following advantages: 1) It covers CTR data of 5 different types of items, providing insights into the preferences of users for different items, including advertisements, vouchers, mini-programs, contents, and videos. 2) Apart from ID-based features, AntM$^{2}$C also provides 2 multi-modal features, raw text and image features, which can effectively establish connections between items with different IDs. 3) AntM$^{2}$C provides 1 billion CTR data with 200 features, including 200 million users and 6 million items. It is currently the largest-scale CTR dataset available. Based on AntM$^{2}$C, we construct several typical CTR tasks and provide comparisons with baseline methods. HHGT: Hierarchical Heterogeneous Graph Transformer for Heterogeneous Graph Representation LearningQiuyu Zhu, Liang Zhang, Qianxiong Xu et al.
Despite the success of Heterogeneous Graph Neural Networks (HGNNs) in modeling real-world Heterogeneous Information Networks (HINs), challenges such as expressiveness limitations and over-smoothing have prompted researchers to explore Graph Transformers (GTs) for enhanced HIN representation learning. However, research on GT in HINs remains limited, with two key shortcomings in existing work: (1) A node's neighbors at different distances in HINs convey diverse semantics. Unfortunately, existing methods ignore such differences and uniformly treat neighbors within a given distance in a coarse manner, which results in semantic confusion. (2) Nodes in HINs have various types, each with unique semantics. Nevertheless, existing methods mix nodes of different types during neighbor aggregation, hindering the capture of proper correlations between nodes of diverse types. To bridge these gaps, we design an innovative structure named (k,t)-ring neighborhood, where nodes are initially organized by their distance, forming different non-overlapping k-ring neighborhoods for each distance. Within each k-ring structure, nodes are further categorized into different groups according to their types, thus emphasizing the heterogeneity of both distances and types in HINs naturally. Based on this structure, we propose a novel Hierarchical Heterogeneous Graph Transformer (HHGT) model, which seamlessly integrates a Type-level Transformer for aggregating nodes of different types within each k-ring neighborhood, followed by a Ring-level Transformer for aggregating different k-ring neighborhoods in a hierarchical manner. Extensive experiments are conducted on downstream tasks to verify HHGT's superiority over 14 baselines, with a notable improvement of up to 24.75% in NMI and 29.25% in ARI for node clustering task on the ACM dataset compared to the best baseline.

Cycle Pixel Difference Network for Crisp Edge DetectionChangsong Liu, Wei Zhang, Yanyan Liu et al.
Edge detection, as a fundamental task in computer vision, has garnered increasing attention. The advent of deep learning has significantly advanced this field. However, recent deep learning-based methods generally face two significant issues: 1) reliance on large-scale pre-trained weights, and 2) generation of thick edges. We construct a U-shape encoder-decoder model named CPD-Net that successfully addresses these two issues simultaneously. In response to issue 1), we propose a novel cycle pixel difference convolution (CPDC), which effectively integrates edge prior knowledge with modern convolution operations, consequently successfully eliminating the dependence on large-scale pre-trained weights. As for issue 2), we construct a multi-scale information enhancement module (MSEM) and a dual residual connection-based (DRC) decoder to enhance the edge location ability of the model, thereby generating crisp and clean contour maps. Comprehensive experiments conducted on four standard benchmarks demonstrate that our method achieves competitive performance on the BSDS500 dataset (ODS=0.813 and AC=0.352), NYUD-V2 (ODS=0.760 and AC=0.223), BIPED dataset (ODS=0.898 and AC=0.426), and CID (ODS=0.59). Our approach provides a novel perspective for addressing these challenges in edge detection.

LiteViLNet: Lightweight Vision-LiDAR Fusion Network for Efficient Road SegmentationDaojie Peng, Bingtao Wang, Fulong Ma et al.
Road segmentation is a fundamental perception task for autonomous driving and intelligent robotic systems, requiring both high accuracy and real-time inference, especially for deployment on resource-constrained edge devices. Existing multi-modal road segmentation methods often rely on heavy transformer-based encoders to achieve state-of-the-art performance, but their enormous computational cost prohibits real-time deployment on embedded platforms. To address this dilemma, we propose \textbf{LiteViLNet}, a lightweight multi-modal network that fuses RGB texture information and LiDAR geometric information for efficient road segmentation. Specifically, we design a dual-stream lightweight encoder and depth-wise separable convolutions to extract hierarchical features from both modalities with minimal parameters. We further propose a Multi-Scale Feature Fusion Module (MSFM) to facilitate cross-modal interaction at different levels, and a large-kernel-bridge module to capture long-range dependencies with linear complexity. Extensive experiments on the KITTI Road dataset and real-world applications demonstrate that LiteViLNet achieves a promising balance between accuracy and efficiency. Notably, with only 14.04M parameters, our model attains a 96.36\% MaxF score, ranking the best among all CNN-based methods and being comparable to larger transformer-based models, and runs at 163.79 FPS in model-only inference on RTX 4060 Ti (22.18 FPS on Jetson Orin NX). It outperforms numerous heavy-weight methods in inference speed while maintaining highly competitive accuracy, fully validating the potential of LiteViLNet for real-time embedded deployment in autonomous driving and intelligent robotics.

Breaking Smooth-Motion Assumptions: A UAV Benchmark for Multi-Object Tracking in Complex and Adverse ConditionsJingtao Ye, Kexin Zhang, Xunchi Ma et al.
The rapid movements and agile maneuvers of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) induce significant observational challenges for multi-object tracking (MOT). However, existing UAV-perspective MOT benchmarks often lack these complexities, featuring predominantly predictable camera dynamics and linear motion patterns. To address this gap, we introduce DynUAV, a new benchmark for dynamic UAV-perspective MOT, characterized by intense ego-motion and the resulting complex apparent trajectories. The benchmark comprises 42 video sequences with over 1.7 million bounding box annotations, covering vehicles, pedestrians, and specialized industrial categories such as excavators, bulldozers and cranes. Compared to existing benchmarks, DynUAV introduces substantial challenges arising from ego-motion, including drastic scale changes and viewpoint changes, as well as motion blur. Comprehensive evaluations of state-of-the-art trackers on DynUAV reveal their limitations, particularly in managing the intertwined challenges of detection and association under such dynamic conditions, thereby establishing DynUAV as a rigorous benchmark. Modeling Reference-dependent Choices with Graph Neural NetworksLiang Zhang, Guannan Liu, Junjie Wu et al.
While the classic Prospect Theory has highlighted the reference-dependent and comparative nature of consumers' product evaluation processes, few models have successfully integrated this theoretical hypothesis into data-driven preference quantification, particularly in the realm of recommender systems development. To bridge this gap, we propose a new research problem of modeling reference-dependent preferences from a data-driven perspective, and design a novel deep learning-based framework named Attributed Reference-dependent Choice Model for Recommendation (ArcRec) to tackle the inherent challenges associated with this problem. ArcRec features in building a reference network from aggregated historical purchase records for instantiating theoretical reference points, which is then decomposed into product attribute specific sub-networks and represented through Graph Neural Networks. In this way, the reference points of a consumer can be encoded at the attribute-level individually from her past experiences but also reflect the crowd influences. ArcRec also makes novel contributions to quantifying consumers' reference-dependent preferences using a deep neural network-based utility function that integrates both interest-inspired and price-inspired preferences, with their complex interaction effects captured by an attribute-aware price sensitivity mechanism. Most importantly, ArcRec introduces a novel Attribute-level Willingness-To-Pay measure to the reference-dependent utility function, which captures a consumer's heterogeneous salience of product attributes via observing her attribute-level price tolerance to a product. Empirical evaluations on both synthetic and real-world online shopping datasets demonstrate ArcRec's superior performances over fourteen state-of-the-art baselines.
