Volumetric Inverse Rendering via Neural Radiative Transfer

Ntumba Elie Nsampi, Adarsh Djeacoumar, Hans-Peter Seidel et al.

Volumetric inverse rendering seeks to recover the optical properties of participating media from images. Existing approaches either rely on differentiable stochastic light transport simulation, which require substantial algorithmic effort, or use simplified models that fail to capture global illumination. We propose a formulation that reconciles physically complete light transport with general-purpose neural optimization. The optical properties of the medium and the full light field are represented as neural fields and estimated through a joint optimization process. Global illumination is enforced via a residual objective derived from the Radiative Transfer Equation in local differential form, complemented by a volume rendering term along primary viewing rays to mitigate \rev{low-frequency} bias. We demonstrate reconstruction of spatially varying, color-resolved scattering, absorption, and phase function parameters from multi-view images. Beyond reconstruction, the same framework supports learning generative models of participating media with physical optical properties under global illumination.

Neural Field Convolutions by Repeated Differentiation

Ntumba Elie Nsampi, Adarsh Djeacoumar, Hans-Peter Seidel et al.

Neural fields are evolving towards a general-purpose continuous representation for visual computing. Yet, despite their numerous appealing properties, they are hardly amenable to signal processing. As a remedy, we present a method to perform general continuous convolutions with general continuous signals such as neural fields. Observing that piecewise polynomial kernels reduce to a sparse set of Dirac deltas after repeated differentiation, we leverage convolution identities and train a repeated integral field to efficiently execute large-scale convolutions. We demonstrate our approach on a variety of data modalities and spatially-varying kernels.

Learning Neural Antiderivatives

Fizza Rubab, Ntumba Elie Nsampi, Martin Balint et al.

Neural fields offer continuous, learnable representations that extend beyond traditional discrete formats in visual computing. We study the problem of learning neural representations of repeated antiderivatives directly from a function, a continuous analogue of summed-area tables. Although widely used in discrete domains, such cumulative schemes rely on grids, which prevents their applicability in continuous neural contexts. We introduce and analyze a range of neural methods for repeated integration, including both adaptations of prior work and novel designs. Our evaluation spans multiple input dimensionalities and integration orders, assessing both reconstruction quality and performance in downstream tasks such as filtering and rendering. These results enable integrating classical cumulative operators into modern neural systems and offer insights into learning tasks involving differential and integral operators.

SIDNet: Learning Shading-aware Illumination Descriptor for Image Harmonization

Zhongyun Hu, Ntumba Elie Nsampi, Xue Wang et al.

Image harmonization aims at adjusting the appearance of the foreground to make it more compatible with the background. Without exploring background illumination and its effects on the foreground elements, existing works are incapable of generating a realistic foreground shading. In this paper, we decompose the image harmonization task into two sub-problems: 1) illumination estimation of the background image and 2) re-rendering of foreground objects under background illumination. Before solving these two sub-problems, we first learn a shading-aware illumination descriptor via a well-designed neural rendering framework, of which the key is a shading bases module that generates multiple shading bases from the foreground image. Then we design a background illumination estimation module to extract the illumination descriptor from the background. Finally, the Shading-aware Illumination Descriptor is used in conjunction with the neural rendering framework (SIDNet) to produce the harmonized foreground image containing a novel harmonized shading. Moreover, we construct a photo-realistic synthetic image harmonization dataset that contains numerous shading variations with image-based lighting. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real data demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method, especially in dealing with foreground shadings.
