When Clients Stop Following: A Cognitive Conceptualization Diagram-driven Framework for Strategic CounselingYihao Qin, Junyi Zhao, Changsheng Ma et al.
Large Language Models (LLMs) show promise in psychological counseling, yet existing benchmarks rely heavily on highly cooperative simulated clients. We observe a critical counselor-following phenomenon: these clients often rapidly shift from resistance to compliance after only a few turns, creating an illusion of therapeutic progress and inflating scores under current evaluation protocols through superficial empathy. To address this evaluation mismatch, we propose a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-grounded resistance-aware framework. We introduce CARS, a client simulator that explicitly models dynamic resistance via Cognitive Conceptualization Diagrams (CCDs). We present STREAMS, a dual-module framework that decouples strategic reasoning (Thinker) from response generation (Presenter) and optimizes it via reinforcement learning. We further propose EWTS-MI, an entropy-weighted metric for evaluating responsiveness under high-friction interactions. Experiments across resistant and non-resistant counseling settings validate our findings on evaluation mismatch and demonstrate the effectiveness of resistance-aware training for improving strategic robustness under challenging counseling interactions.

Debug Like a Human: Scaling LLM-based Fault Localization to Processor Design via Block-Level Instruction-Oriented SlicingZizhen Liu, Xiaoguang Mao, Deheng Yang et al.
Fault localization in modern processor design code is a critical yet time-consuming step during processor verification. While recent advances in LLM-based techniques for module-level hardware design have shown promising results, automatically localizing bugs in large-scale, project-level processor designs remains challenging. In this paper, we present BluesFL, a novel block-level LLM-based fault localization framework for processor designs. Inspired by the way engineers debug processors, we first propose a dataflow-based code blockization approach to guide LLMs to focus on critical local code context. We further propose a Block-Level Instruction-Oriented Slicing (Blues) algorithm that enables LLMs to mimic human reasoning by analyzing instruction execution paths and processor states. We evaluate BluesFL on a real-world RISC-V processor core comprising 19K lines of SystemVerilog code. Experimental results demonstrate that BluesFL correctly localizes 24 bugs at Top-1, achieving 242.9% improvement over the existing state-of-the-art (7 bugs). Cost analysis shows that BluesFL requires an average of only $0.257 to localize a single bug.

IPD: Boosting Sequential Policy with Imaginary Planning Distillation in Offline Reinforcement LearningYihao Qin, Yuanfei Wang, Hang Zhou et al.
Decision transformer based sequential policies have emerged as a powerful paradigm in offline reinforcement learning (RL), yet their efficacy remains constrained by the quality of static datasets and inherent architectural limitations. Specifically, these models often struggle to effectively integrate suboptimal experiences and fail to explicitly plan for an optimal policy. To bridge this gap, we propose \textbf{Imaginary Planning Distillation (IPD)}, a novel framework that seamlessly incorporates offline planning into data generation, supervised training, and online inference. Our framework first learns a world model equipped with uncertainty measures and a quasi-optimal value function from the offline data. These components are utilized to identify suboptimal trajectories and augment them with reliable, imagined optimal rollouts generated via Model Predictive Control (MPC). A Transformer-based sequential policy is then trained on this enriched dataset, complemented by a value-guided objective that promotes the distillation of the optimal policy. By replacing the conventional, manually-tuned return-to-go with the learned quasi-optimal value function, IPD improves both decision-making stability and performance during inference. Empirical evaluations on the D4RL benchmark demonstrate that IPD significantly outperforms several state-of-the-art value-based and transformer-based offline RL methods across diverse tasks.

Large Language Models are Qualified Benchmark Builders: Rebuilding Pre-Training Datasets for Advancing Code Intelligence TasksKang Yang, Xinjun Mao, Shangwen Wang et al.
Pre-trained code models rely heavily on high-quality pre-training data, particularly human-written reference comments that bridge code and natural language. However, these comments often become outdated as software evolves, degrading model performance. Large language models (LLMs) excel at generating high-quality code comments. We investigate whether replacing human-written comments with LLM-generated ones improves pre-training datasets. Since standard metrics cannot assess reference comment quality, we propose two novel reference-free evaluation tasks: code-comment inconsistency detection and semantic code search. Results show that LLM-generated comments are more semantically consistent with code than human-written ones, as confirmed by manual evaluation. Leveraging this finding, we rebuild the CodeSearchNet dataset with LLM-generated comments and re-pre-train CodeT5. Evaluations demonstrate that models trained on LLM-enhanced data outperform those using original human comments in code summarization, generation, and translation tasks. This work validates rebuilding pre-training datasets with LLMs to advance code intelligence, challenging the traditional reliance on human reference comments.

Physics-informed Imitative Reinforcement Learning for Real-world DrivingHang Zhou, Yihao Qin, Dan Xu et al.
Recent advances in imitative reinforcement learning (IRL) have considerably enhanced the ability of autonomous agents to assimilate expert demonstrations, leading to rapid skill acquisition in a range of demanding tasks. However, such learning-based agents face significant challenges when transferring knowledge to highly dynamic closed-loop environments. Their performance is significantly impacted by the conflicting optimization objectives of imitation learning (IL) and reinforcement learning (RL), sample inefficiency, and the complexity of uncovering the hidden world model and physics. To address this challenge, we propose a physics-informed IRL that is entirely data-driven. It leverages both expert demonstration data and exploratory data with a joint optimization objective, allowing the underlying physical principles of vehicle dynamics to emerge naturally from the training process. The performance is evaluated through empirical experiments and results exceed popular IL, RL and IRL algorithms in closed-loop settings on Waymax benchmark. Our approach exhibits 37.8% reduction in collision rate and 22.2% reduction in off-road rate compared to the baseline method.

A Fine-grained Data Set and Analysis of Tangling in Bug Fixing CommitsSteffen Herbold, Alexander Trautsch, Benjamin Ledel et al.
Context: Tangled commits are changes to software that address multiple concerns at once. For researchers interested in bugs, tangled commits mean that they actually study not only bugs, but also other concerns irrelevant for the study of bugs. Objective: We want to improve our understanding of the prevalence of tangling and the types of changes that are tangled within bug fixing commits. Methods: We use a crowd sourcing approach for manual labeling to validate which changes contribute to bug fixes for each line in bug fixing commits. Each line is labeled by four participants. If at least three participants agree on the same label, we have consensus. Results: We estimate that between 17% and 32% of all changes in bug fixing commits modify the source code to fix the underlying problem. However, when we only consider changes to the production code files this ratio increases to 66% to 87%. We find that about 11% of lines are hard to label leading to active disagreements between participants. Due to confirmed tangling and the uncertainty in our data, we estimate that 3% to 47% of data is noisy without manual untangling, depending on the use case. Conclusion: Tangled commits have a high prevalence in bug fixes and can lead to a large amount of noise in the data. Prior research indicates that this noise may alter results. As researchers, we should be skeptics and assume that unvalidated data is likely very noisy, until proven otherwise.
