Distributed Real-Time HVAC Control for Cost-Efficient Commercial Buildings under Smart Grid EnvironmentLiang Yu, Di Xie, Tao Jiang et al.
In this paper, we investigate the problem of minimizing the long-term total cost (i.e., the sum of energy cost and thermal discomfort cost) associated with a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system of a multizone commercial building under smart grid environment. To be specific, we first formulate a stochastic program to minimize the time average expected total cost with the consideration of uncertainties in electricity price, outdoor temperature, the most comfortable temperature level, and external thermal disturbance. Due to the existence of temporally and spatially coupled constraints as well as unknown information about the future system parameters, it is very challenging to solve the formulated problem. To this end, we propose a realtime HVAC control algorithm based on the framework of Lyapunov optimization techniques without the need to predict any system parameters and know their stochastic information. The key idea of the proposed algorithm is to construct and stabilize virtual queues associated with indoor temperatures of all zones. Moreover, we provide a distributed implementation of the proposed realtime algorithm with the aim of protecting user privacy and enhancing algorithmic scalability. Extensive simulation results based on real-world traces show that the proposed algorithm could reduce energy cost effectively with small sacrifice in thermal comfort.

In this paper, we investigate the problem of minimizing the sum of energy cost and thermal discomfort cost in a long-term time horizon for a sustainable smart home with a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) load. Specifically, we first formulate a stochastic program to minimize the time average expected total cost with the consideration of uncertainties in electricity price, outdoor temperature, renewable generation output, electrical demand, the most comfortable temperature level, and home occupancy state. Then, we propose an online energy management algorithm based on the framework of Lyapunov optimization techniques without the need to predict any system parameters. The key idea of the proposed algorithm is to construct and stabilize four queues associated with indoor temperature, electric vehicle charging, and energy storage. Moreover, we theoretically analyze the feasibility and performance guarantee of the proposed algorithm. Extensive simulations based on real-world traces show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

BARS: A Benchmark for Airport Runway SegmentationWenhui Chen, Zhijiang Zhang, Liang Yu et al.
Airport runway segmentation can effectively reduce the accident rate during the landing phase, which has the largest risk of flight accidents. With the rapid development of deep learning (DL), related methods achieve good performance on segmentation tasks and can be well adapted to complex scenes. However, the lack of large-scale, publicly available datasets in this field makes the development of methods based on DL difficult. Therefore, we propose a benchmark for airport runway segmentation, named BARS. Additionally, a semiautomatic annotation pipeline is designed to reduce the annotation workload. BARS has the largest dataset with the richest categories and the only instance annotation in the field. The dataset, which was collected using the X-Plane simulation platform, contains 10,256 images and 30,201 instances with three categories. We evaluate eleven representative instance segmentation methods on BARS and analyze their performance. Based on the characteristic of an airport runway with a regular shape, we propose a plug-and-play smoothing postprocessing module (SPM) and a contour point constraint loss (CPCL) function to smooth segmentation results for mask-based and contour-based methods, respectively. Furthermore, a novel evaluation metric named average smoothness (AS) is developed to measure smoothness. The experiments show that existing instance segmentation methods can achieve prediction results with good performance on BARS. SPM and CPCL can effectively enhance the AS metric while modestly improving accuracy. Our work will be available at https://github.com/c-wenhui/BARS.

Road Extraction with Satellite Images and Partial Road MapsQianxiong Xu, Cheng Long, Liang Yu et al.
Road extraction is a process of automatically generating road maps mainly from satellite images. Existing models all target to generate roads from the scratch despite that a large quantity of road maps, though incomplete, are publicly available (e.g. those from OpenStreetMap) and can help with road extraction. In this paper, we propose to conduct road extraction based on satellite images and partial road maps, which is new. We then propose a two-branch Partial to Complete Network (P2CNet) for the task, which has two prominent components: Gated Self-Attention Module (GSAM) and Missing Part (MP) loss. GSAM leverages a channel-wise self-attention module and a gate module to capture long-range semantics, filter out useless information, and better fuse the features from two branches. MP loss is derived from the partial road maps, trying to give more attention to the road pixels that do not exist in partial road maps. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our model, e.g. P2CNet achieves state-of-the-art performance with the IoU scores of 70.71% and 75.52%, respectively, on the SpaceNet and OSM datasets.

Computational Approaches for Predicting Drug-Disease Associations: A Comprehensive ReviewChunyan Ao, Zhichao Xiao, Lixin Guan et al.
In recent decades, traditional drug research and development have been facing challenges such as high cost, long timelines, and high risks. To address these issues, many computational approaches have been suggested for predicting the relationship between drugs and diseases through drug repositioning, aiming to reduce the cost, development cycle, and risks associated with developing new drugs. Researchers have explored different computational methods to predict drug-disease associations, including drug side effects-disease associations, drug-target associations, and miRNAdisease associations. In this comprehensive review, we focus on recent advances in predicting drug-disease association methods for drug repositioning. We first categorize these methods into several groups, including neural network-based algorithms, matrixbased algorithms, recommendation algorithms, link-based reasoning algorithms, and text mining and semantic reasoning. Then, we compare the prediction performance of existing drug-disease association prediction algorithms. Lastly, we delve into the present challenges and future prospects concerning drug-disease associations.

A Review of Hydrogen-Enabled Resilience Enhancement for Multi-Energy SystemsLiang Yu, Haoyu Fang, Goran Strbac et al.
Ensuring resilience in multi-energy systems (MESs) has become increasingly urgent and challenging due to the growing frequency and severity of extreme events, such as natural disasters, extreme weather, and cyber-physical attacks. Among the various approaches to enhancing MES resilience, hydrogen integration offers significant potential in cross-temporal, cross-spatial, and cross-sector flexibility, as well as black-start capability. Although considerable efforts have been devoted to this area, a systematic review of resilience enhancement in hydrogen-enabled MESs is still lacking. To address this gap, this paper presents a comprehensive review of hydrogen-enabled MES resilience enhancement. First, advantages, vulnerabilities, and challenges related to hydrogen-enabled MES resilience enhancement are summarized. Next, a resilience enhancement framework for hydrogen-enabled MESs is proposed, based on which existing resilience metrics and event-oriented contingency models are reviewed and discussed. Planning measures are then classified according to the types of hydrogen-related facilities, together with uncertainty handling methods, scenario generation methods, and planning problem formulation frameworks. In addition, operational enhancement measures are categorized into three response stages: prevention, emergency response, and restoration. Finally, research gaps are identified and future directions are discussed, including comprehensive resilience metric design, advanced extreme-event scenario generation, spatiotemporal cyber-physical contingency modeling under compound extreme events, coordinated planning and operation across multiple networks and timescales, low-carbon resilient planning and operation, and large language model-assisted whole-process resilience enhancement.

Leveraging Large Vision Model for Multi-UAV Co-perception in Low-Altitude Wireless NetworksYunting Xu, Jiacheng Wang, Ruichen Zhang et al.
Multi-uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) cooperative perception has emerged as a promising paradigm for diverse low-altitude economy applications, where complementary multi-view observations are leveraged to enhance perception performance via wireless communications. However, the massive visual data generated by multiple UAVs poses significant challenges in terms of communication latency and resource efficiency. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a communication-efficient cooperative perception framework, termed Base-Station-Helped UAV (BHU), which reduces communication overhead while enhancing perception performance. Specifically, we employ a Top-K selection mechanism to identify the most informative pixels from UAV-captured RGB images, enabling sparsified visual transmission with reduced data volume and latency. The sparsified images are transmitted to a ground server via multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO), where a Swin-large-based MaskDINO encoder extracts bird's-eye-view (BEV) features and performs cooperative feature fusion for ground vehicle perception. Furthermore, we develop a diffusion model-based deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm to jointly select cooperative UAVs, sparsification ratios, and precoding matrices, achieving a balance between communication efficiency and perception utility. Simulation results on the Air-Co-Pred dataset demonstrate that, compared with traditional CNN-based BEV fusion baselines, the proposed BHU framework improves perception performance by over 5% while reducing communication overhead by 85%, providing an effective solution for multi-UAV cooperative perception under resource-constrained wireless environments.

End-to-End Learning-based Operation of Integrated Energy Systems for Buildings and Data CentersZhenyu Pu, Yu Yang, Liang Yu et al.
Buildings and data centers (DCs) are energy-intensive sectors, playing a critical role to achieve the low-carbon and sustainable energy transition targets. To this end, integrated energy system (IES) that incorporates diverse renewables, energy generation, conversion, and storage technologies to enable coordinated multi-energy supply have been widely investigated for both buildings and DCs. However, few works consider the two sectors jointly within IES to exploit their substantial synergistic benefits. Meanwhile, the operational optimization of IES remains challenging due to the difficulty to predict the multi-energy demand and supply accurately. To address these gaps, this paper investigates IES for coordinated multi-energy supply of buildings and DC, where the waste heat from DCs is recovered and reused to enhance energy efficiency. Moreover, an end-to-end learning-based method is proposed for the operational optimization of IES under uncertainty. Unlike conventional predict-then-optimize approaches, the proposed method integrates the training of prediction models for uncertain variables with the constrained optimization of IES into a unified learning framework, guiding the training of prediction models to improve operational performance, rather than prediction accuracy, thereby mitigating the impacts of predictions errors. Case studies based on real-world datasets show that the proposed methods improves the operational performance of IES by about 7-9% compared to existing predict-then-optimize methods. In addition, coordinating buildings and DCs within IES shows substantial economic benefits. In particular, the waste heat recovery from DCs leads to approximately 10% of total energy cost reduction of the IES.

In this paper, we propose a novel 3D registration paradigm, Generative Point Cloud Registration, which bridges advanced 2D generative models with 3D matching tasks to enhance registration performance. Our key idea is to generate cross-view consistent image pairs that are well-aligned with the source and target point clouds, enabling geometry-color feature fusion to facilitate robust matching. To ensure high-quality matching, the generated image pair should feature both 2D-3D geometric consistency and cross-view texture consistency. To achieve this, we introduce Match-ControlNet, a matching-specific, controllable 2D generative model. Specifically, it leverages the depth-conditioned generation capability of ControlNet to produce images that are geometrically aligned with depth maps derived from point clouds, ensuring 2D-3D geometric consistency. Additionally, by incorporating a coupled conditional denoising scheme and coupled prompt guidance, Match-ControlNet further promotes cross-view feature interaction, guiding texture consistency generation. Our generative 3D registration paradigm is general and could be seamlessly integrated into various registration methods to enhance their performance. Extensive experiments on 3DMatch and ScanNet datasets verify the effectiveness of our approach.

FUSER: Feed-Forward MUltiview 3D Registration Transformer and SE(3)$^N$ Diffusion RefinementHaobo Jiang, Jin Xie, Jian Yang et al.
Registration of multiview point clouds conventionally relies on extensive pairwise matching to build a pose graph for global synchronization, which is computationally expensive and inherently ill-posed without holistic geometric constraints. This paper proposes FUSER, the first feed-forward multiview registration transformer that jointly processes all scans in a unified, compact latent space to directly predict global poses without any pairwise estimation. To maintain tractability, FUSER encodes each scan into low-resolution superpoint features via a sparse 3D CNN that preserves absolute translation cues, and performs efficient intra- and inter-scan reasoning through a Geometric Alternating Attention module. Particularly, we transfer 2D attention priors from off-the-shelf foundation models to enhance 3D feature interaction and geometric consistency. Building upon FUSER, we further introduce FUSER-DF, an SE(3)$^N$ diffusion refinement framework to correct FUSER's estimates via denoising in the joint SE(3)$^N$ space. FUSER acts as a surrogate multiview registration model to construct the denoiser, and a prior-conditioned SE(3)$^N$ variational lower bound is derived for denoising supervision. Extensive experiments on 3DMatch, ScanNet and ArkitScenes demonstrate that our approach achieves the superior registration accuracy and outstanding computational efficiency.

CAX-Agent: A Lightweight Agent Harness for Reliable APDL AutomationChenying Lin, Yichen Hai, Yi He et al.
Large language models deployed for MAPDL finite-element simulation face practical reliability challenges: without structured execution control, tool encapsulation, and fault recovery, outputs may be inconsistent and task failures are common. The Agent Harness paradigm addresses this by inserting domain-specific orchestration middleware that manages tool lifecycles, workflow state, and recovery escalation. This paper presents the architecture of CAX-Agent, a lightweight agent harness purpose-built for MAPDL automation, and empirically evaluates one of its core components -- the recovery policy.CAX-Agent organizes execution into three layers -- LLM service, agent harness, and solver backend -- with a recovery ladder that escalates from deterministic rule patching through model-driven regeneration to context enrichment and human intervention. We evaluate three recovery strategies (no_recovery, rule_only, and model_only) on 50 standard structural benchmarks with three repeated runs per strategy (450 case-runs total). Two independent human raters score task completion under blind conditions; inter-rater agreement is strong (quadratic weighted Cohen's kappa = 0.84, 96 percent of score pairs within one point). Model_only achieves the best completion rate (0.9267), task score (3.59/4), total score (9.16/10), and zero-intervention rate (0.84), outperforming rule_only (0.7733, 3.17/4, 7.03/10, 0.00) and no_recovery (0.6933, 2.74/4, 5.60/10, 0.00) with large effect sizes (Cliff's delta = 0.81-0.87). The benchmark uses deliberately simple geometries to isolate recovery-policy effects; we discuss the scope of these findings and directions for broader validation.

MFRS: A Multi-Frequency Reference Series Approach to Scalable and Accurate Time-Series ForecastingLiang Yu, Lai Tu, Xiang Bai
Multivariate time-series forecasting holds immense value across diverse applications, requiring methods to effectively capture complex temporal and inter-variable dynamics. A key challenge lies in uncovering the intrinsic patterns that govern predictability, beyond conventional designs, focusing on network architectures to explore latent relationships or temporal dependencies. Inspired by signal decomposition, this paper posits that time series predictability is derived from periodic characteristics at different frequencies. Consequently, we propose a novel time series forecasting method based on multi-frequency reference series correlation analysis. Through spectral analysis on long-term training data, we identify dominant spectral components and their harmonics to design base-pattern reference series. Unlike signal decomposition, which represents the original series as a linear combination of basis signals, our method uses a transformer model to compute cross-attention between the original series and reference series, capturing essential features for forecasting. Experiments on major open and synthetic datasets show state-of-the-art performance. Furthermore, by focusing on attention with a small number of reference series rather than pairwise variable attention, our method ensures scalability and broad applicability. Neural Networks (NN) has been used in many areas with great success. When a NN's structure (Model) is given, during the training steps, the parameters of the model are determined using an appropriate criterion and an optimization algorithm (Training). Then, the trained model can be used for the prediction or inference step (Testing). As there are also many hyperparameters, related to the optimization criteria and optimization algorithms, a validation step is necessary before its final use. One of the great difficulties is the choice of the NN's structure. Even if there are many "on the shelf" networks, selecting or proposing a new appropriate network for a given data, signal or image processing, is still an open problem. In this work, we consider this problem using model based signal and image processing and inverse problems methods. We classify the methods in five classes, based on: i) Explicit analytical solutions, ii) Transform domain decomposition, iii) Operator Decomposition, iv) Optimization algorithms unfolding, and v) Physics Informed NN methods (PINN). Few examples in each category are explained.

We introduce HyperCLOVA X, a family of large language models (LLMs) tailored to the Korean language and culture, along with competitive capabilities in English, math, and coding. HyperCLOVA X was trained on a balanced mix of Korean, English, and code data, followed by instruction-tuning with high-quality human-annotated datasets while abiding by strict safety guidelines reflecting our commitment to responsible AI. The model is evaluated across various benchmarks, including comprehensive reasoning, knowledge, commonsense, factuality, coding, math, chatting, instruction-following, and harmlessness, in both Korean and English. HyperCLOVA X exhibits strong reasoning capabilities in Korean backed by a deep understanding of the language and cultural nuances. Further analysis of the inherent bilingual nature and its extension to multilingualism highlights the model's cross-lingual proficiency and strong generalization ability to untargeted languages, including machine translation between several language pairs and cross-lingual inference tasks. We believe that HyperCLOVA X can provide helpful guidance for regions or countries in developing their sovereign LLMs.

Paradigm shift on Coding Productivity Using GenAILiang Yu
Generative AI (GenAI) applications are transforming software engineering by enabling automated code co-creation. However, empirical evidence on GenAI's productivity effects in industrial settings remains limited. This paper investigates the adoption of GenAI coding assistants (e.g., Codeium, Amazon Q) within telecommunications and FinTech domains. Through surveys and interviews with industrial domain-experts, we identify primary productivity-influencing factors, including task complexity, coding skills, domain knowledge, and GenAI integration. Our findings indicate that GenAI tools enhance productivity in routine coding tasks (e.g., refactoring and Javadoc generation) but face challenges in complex, domain-specific activities due to limited context-awareness of codebases and insufficient support for customized design rules. We highlight new paradigms for coding transfer, emphasizing iterative prompt refinement, immersive development environment, and automated code evaluation as essential for effective GenAI usage.

A Low-cost and Ultra-lightweight Binary Neural Network for Traffic Signal RecognitionMingke Xiao, Yue Su, Liang Yu et al.
The deployment of neural networks in vehicle platforms and wearable Artificial Intelligence-of-Things (AIOT) scenarios has become a research area that has attracted much attention. With the continuous evolution of deep learning technology, many image classification models are committed to improving recognition accuracy, but this is often accompanied by problems such as large model resource usage, complex structure, and high power consumption, which makes it challenging to deploy on resource-constrained platforms. Herein, we propose an ultra-lightweight binary neural network (BNN) model designed for hardware deployment, and conduct image classification research based on the German Traffic Sign Recognition Benchmark (GTSRB) dataset. In addition, we also verify it on the Chinese Traffic Sign (CTS) and Belgian Traffic Sign (BTS) datasets. The proposed model shows excellent recognition performance with an accuracy of up to 97.64%, making it one of the best performing BNN models in the GTSRB dataset. Compared with the full-precision model, the accuracy loss is controlled within 1%, and the parameter storage overhead of the model is only 10% of that of the full-precision model. More importantly, our network model only relies on logical operations and low-bit width fixed-point addition and subtraction operations during the inference phase, which greatly simplifies the design complexity of the processing element (PE). Our research shows the great potential of BNN in the hardware deployment of computer vision models, especially in the field of computer vision tasks related to autonomous driving.

Rewarding Creativity: A Human-Aligned Generative Reward Model for Reinforcement Learning in StorytellingZhaoyan Li, Hang Lei, Yujia Wang et al.
While Large Language Models (LLMs) can generate fluent text, producing high-quality creative stories remains challenging. Reinforcement Learning (RL) offers a promising solution but faces two critical obstacles: designing reliable reward signals for subjective storytelling quality and mitigating training instability. This paper introduces the Reinforcement Learning for Creative Storytelling (RLCS) framework to systematically address both challenges. First, we develop a Generative Reward Model (GenRM) that provides multi-dimensional analysis and explicit reasoning about story preferences, trained through supervised fine-tuning on demonstrations with reasoning chains distilled from strong teacher models, followed by GRPO-based refinement on expanded preference data. Second, we introduce an entropy-based reward shaping strategy that dynamically prioritizes learning on confident errors and uncertain correct predictions, preventing overfitting on already-mastered patterns. Experiments demonstrate that GenRM achieves 68\% alignment with human creativity judgments, and RLCS significantly outperforms strong baselines including Gemini-2.5-Pro in overall story quality. This work provides a practical pipeline for applying RL to creative domains, effectively navigating the dual challenges of reward modeling and training stability.

Machine Learning (ML) methods and tools have gained great success in many data, signal, image and video processing tasks, such as classification, clustering, object detection, semantic segmentation, language processing, Human-Machine interface, etc. In computer vision, image and video processing, these methods are mainly based on Neural Networks (NN) and in particular Convolutional NN (CNN), and more generally Deep NN. Inverse problems arise anywhere we have indirect measurement. As, in general, those inverse problems are ill-posed, to obtain satisfactory solutions for them needs prior information. Different regularization methods have been proposed, where the problem becomes the optimization of a criterion with a likelihood term and a regularization term. The main difficulty, however, in great dimensional real applications, remains the computational cost. Using NN, and in particular Deep Learning (DL) surrogate models and approximate computation, can become very helpful. In this work, we focus on NN and DL particularly adapted for inverse problems. We consider two cases: First the case where the forward operator is known and used as physics constraint, the second more general data driven DL methods.

Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning for HVAC Control in Commercial BuildingsLiang Yu, Yi Sun, Zhanbo Xu et al.
In commercial buildings, about 40%-50% of the total electricity consumption is attributed to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, which places an economic burden on building operators. In this paper, we intend to minimize the energy cost of an HVAC system in a multi-zone commercial building under dynamic pricing with the consideration of random zone occupancy, thermal comfort, and indoor air quality comfort. Due to the existence of unknown thermal dynamics models, parameter uncertainties (e.g., outdoor temperature, electricity price, and number of occupants), spatially and temporally coupled constraints associated with indoor temperature and CO2 concentration, a large discrete solution space, and a non-convex and non-separable objective function, it is very challenging to achieve the above aim. To this end, the above energy cost minimization problem is reformulated as a Markov game. Then, an HVAC control algorithm is proposed to solve the Markov game based on multi-agent deep reinforcement learning with attention mechanism. The proposed algorithm does not require any prior knowledge of uncertain parameters and can operate without knowing building thermal dynamics models. Simulation results based on real-world traces show the effectiveness, robustness and scalability of the proposed algorithm.

A Node Embedding Framework for Integration of Similarity-based Drug Combination PredictionLiang Yu, Mingfei Xia, Lin Gao
Motivation: Drug combination is a sensible strategy for disease treatment by improving the efficacy and reducing concomitant side effects. Due to the large number of possible combinations among candidate compounds, exhaustive screening is prohibitive. Currently, a plenty of studies have focused on predicting potential drug combinations. However, these methods are not entirely satisfactory in performance and scalability. Results: In this paper, we proposed a Network Embedding framework in Multiplex Networks (NEMN) to predict synthetic drug combinations. Based on a multiplex drug similarity network, we offered alternative methods to integrate useful information from different aspects and to decide quantitative importance of each network. To explain the feasibility of NEMN, we applied our framework to the data of drug-drug interactions, on which it showed better performance in terms of AUPR and ROC. For Drug combination prediction, we found seven novel drug combinations which have been validated by external sources among the top-ranked predictions of our model.

Deep Learning System to Screen Coronavirus Disease 2019 PneumoniaXiaowei Xu, Xiangao Jiang, Chunlian Ma et al.
We found that the real time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) detection of viral RNA from sputum or nasopharyngeal swab has a relatively low positive rate in the early stage to determine COVID-19 (named by the World Health Organization). The manifestations of computed tomography (CT) imaging of COVID-19 had their own characteristics, which are different from other types of viral pneumonia, such as Influenza-A viral pneumonia. Therefore, clinical doctors call for another early diagnostic criteria for this new type of pneumonia as soon as possible.This study aimed to establish an early screening model to distinguish COVID-19 pneumonia from Influenza-A viral pneumonia and healthy cases with pulmonary CT images using deep learning techniques. The candidate infection regions were first segmented out using a 3-dimensional deep learning model from pulmonary CT image set. These separated images were then categorized into COVID-19, Influenza-A viral pneumonia and irrelevant to infection groups, together with the corresponding confidence scores using a location-attention classification model. Finally the infection type and total confidence score of this CT case were calculated with Noisy-or Bayesian function.The experiments result of benchmark dataset showed that the overall accuracy was 86.7 % from the perspective of CT cases as a whole.The deep learning models established in this study were effective for the early screening of COVID-19 patients and demonstrated to be a promising supplementary diagnostic method for frontline clinical doctors.
