To Believe or Not To Believe: Comparing Supporting Information Tools to Aid Human Judgments of AI VeracityJessica Irons, Patrick Cooper, Necva Bolucu et al.
With increasing awareness of the hallucination risks of generative artificial intelligence (AI), we see a growing shift toward providing information tooling to help users determine the veracity of AI-generated answers for themselves. User responsibility for assessing veracity is particularly critical for certain sectors that rely on on-demand, AI-generated data extraction, such as biomedical research and the legal sector. While prior work offers us a variety of ways in which systems can provide such support, there is a lack of empirical evidence on how this information is actually incorporated into the user's decision-making process. Our user study takes a step toward filling this knowledge gap. In the context of a generative AI data extraction tool, we examine the relationship between the type of supporting information (full source text, passage retrieval, and Large Language Model (LLM) explanations) and user behavior in the veracity assessment process, examined through the lens of efficiency, effectiveness, reliance and trust. We find that passage retrieval offers a reasonable compromise between accuracy and speed, with judgments of veracity comparable to using the full source text. LLM explanations, while also enabling rapid assessments, fostered inappropriate reliance and trust on the data extraction AI, such that participants were less likely to detect errors. In additiona, we analyzed the impacts of the complexity of the information need, finding preliminary evidence that inappropriate reliance is worse for complex answers. We demonstrate how, through rigorous user evaluation, we can better develop systems that allow for effective and responsible human agency in veracity assessment processes.

On the Role of Context for Discourse Relation Classification in Scientific WritingStephen Wan, Wei Liu, Michael Strube
With the increasing use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods to support science workflows, we are interested in the use of discourse-level information to find supporting evidence for AI generated scientific claims. A first step towards this objective is to examine the task of inferring discourse structure in scientific writing. In this work, we present a preliminary investigation of pretrained language model (PLM) and Large Language Model (LLM) approaches for Discourse Relation Classification (DRC), focusing on scientific publications, an under-studied genre for this task. We examine how context can help with the DRC task, with our experiments showing that context, as defined by discourse structure, is generally helpful. We also present an analysis of which scientific discourse relation types might benefit most from context.

Unifying Stable Optimization and Reference Regularization in RLHFLi He, Qiang Qu, He Zhao et al.
Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) has advanced alignment capabilities significantly but remains hindered by two core challenges: \textbf{reward hacking} and \textbf{stable optimization}. Current solutions independently address these issues through separate regularization strategies, specifically a KL-divergence penalty against a supervised fine-tuned model ($π_0$) to mitigate reward hacking, and policy ratio clipping towards the current policy ($π_t$) to promote stable alignment. However, the implicit trade-off arising from simultaneously regularizing towards both $π_0$ and $π_t$ remains under-explored. In this paper, we introduce a unified regularization approach that explicitly balances the objectives of preventing reward hacking and maintaining stable policy updates. Our simple yet principled alignment objective yields a weighted supervised fine-tuning loss with a superior trade-off, which demonstrably improves both alignment results and implementation complexity. Extensive experiments across diverse benchmarks validate that our method consistently outperforms RLHF and online preference learning methods, achieving enhanced alignment performance and stability.

Interpretable Zero-shot Referring Expression Comprehension with Query-driven Scene GraphsYike Wu, Necva Bolucu, Stephen Wan et al.
Zero-shot referring expression comprehension (REC) aims to locate target objects in images given natural language queries without relying on task-specific training data, demanding strong visual understanding capabilities. Existing Vision-Language Models~(VLMs), such as CLIP, commonly address zero-shot REC by directly measuring feature similarities between textual queries and image regions. However, these methods struggle to capture fine-grained visual details and understand complex object relationships. Meanwhile, Large Language Models~(LLMs) excel at high-level semantic reasoning, their inability to directly abstract visual features into textual semantics limits their application in REC tasks. To overcome these limitations, we propose \textbf{SGREC}, an interpretable zero-shot REC method leveraging query-driven scene graphs as structured intermediaries. Specifically, we first employ a VLM to construct a query-driven scene graph that explicitly encodes spatial relationships, descriptive captions, and object interactions relevant to the given query. By leveraging this scene graph, we bridge the gap between low-level image regions and higher-level semantic understanding required by LLMs. Finally, an LLM infers the target object from the structured textual representation provided by the scene graph, responding with detailed explanations for its decisions that ensure interpretability in the inference process. Extensive experiments show that SGREC achieves top-1 accuracy on most zero-shot REC benchmarks, including RefCOCO val (66.78\%), RefCOCO+ testB (53.43\%), and RefCOCOg val (73.28\%), highlighting its strong visual scene understanding.

MetaLead: A Comprehensive Human-Curated Leaderboard Dataset for Transparent Reporting of Machine Learning ExperimentsRoelien C. Timmer, Necva Bölücü, Stephen Wan
Leaderboards are crucial in the machine learning (ML) domain for benchmarking and tracking progress. However, creating leaderboards traditionally demands significant manual effort. In recent years, efforts have been made to automate leaderboard generation, but existing datasets for this purpose are limited by capturing only the best results from each paper and limited metadata. We present MetaLead, a fully human-annotated ML Leaderboard dataset that captures all experimental results for result transparency and contains extra metadata, such as the result experimental type: baseline, proposed method, or variation of proposed method for experiment-type guided comparisons, and explicitly separates train and test dataset for cross-domain assessment. This enriched structure makes MetaLead a powerful resource for more transparent and nuanced evaluations across ML research.

What Causes the Failure of Explicit to Implicit Discourse Relation Recognition?Wei Liu, Stephen Wan, Michael Strube
We consider an unanswered question in the discourse processing community: why do relation classifiers trained on explicit examples (with connectives removed) perform poorly in real implicit scenarios? Prior work claimed this is due to linguistic dissimilarity between explicit and implicit examples but provided no empirical evidence. In this study, we show that one cause for such failure is a label shift after connectives are eliminated. Specifically, we find that the discourse relations expressed by some explicit instances will change when connectives disappear. Unlike previous work manually analyzing a few examples, we present empirical evidence at the corpus level to prove the existence of such shift. Then, we analyze why label shift occurs by considering factors such as the syntactic role played by connectives, ambiguity of connectives, and more. Finally, we investigate two strategies to mitigate the label shift: filtering out noisy data and joint learning with connectives. Experiments on PDTB 2.0, PDTB 3.0, and the GUM dataset demonstrate that classifiers trained with our strategies outperform strong baselines.

A Position Paper on the Automatic Generation of Machine Learning LeaderboardsRoelien C Timmer, Yufang Hou, Stephen Wan
An important task in machine learning (ML) research is comparing prior work, which is often performed via ML leaderboards: a tabular overview of experiments with comparable conditions (e.g., same task, dataset, and metric). However, the growing volume of literature creates challenges in creating and maintaining these leaderboards. To ease this burden, researchers have developed methods to extract leaderboard entries from research papers for automated leaderboard curation. Yet, prior work varies in problem framing, complicating comparisons and limiting real-world applicability. In this position paper, we present the first overview of Automatic Leaderboard Generation (ALG) research, identifying fundamental differences in assumptions, scope, and output formats. We propose an ALG unified conceptual framework to standardise how the ALG task is defined. We offer ALG benchmarking guidelines, including recommendations for datasets and metrics that promote fair, reproducible evaluation. Lastly, we outline challenges and new directions for ALG, such as, advocating for broader coverage by including all reported results and richer metadata.

Using a Human-AI Teaming Approach to Create and Curate Scientific Datasets with the SCILIRE SystemNecva Bölücü, Jessica Irons, Changhyun Lee et al.
The rapid growth of scientific literature has made manual extraction of structured knowledge increasingly impractical. To address this challenge, we introduce SCILIRE, a system for creating datasets from scientific literature. SCILIRE has been designed around Human-AI teaming principles centred on workflows for verifying and curating data. It facilitates an iterative workflow in which researchers can review and correct AI outputs. Furthermore, this interaction is used as a feedback signal to improve future LLM-based inference. We evaluate our design using a combination of intrinsic benchmarking outcomes together with real-world case studies across multiple domains. The results demonstrate that SCILIRE improves extraction fidelity and facilitates efficient dataset creation.

Abductive Computational Systems: Creative Abduction and Future DirectionsAbhinav Sood, Kazjon Grace, Stephen Wan et al.
Abductive reasoning, reasoning for inferring explanations for observations, is often mentioned in scientific, design-related and artistic contexts, but its understanding varies across these domains. This paper reviews how abductive reasoning is discussed in epistemology, science and design, and then analyses how various computational systems use abductive reasoning. Our analysis shows that neither theoretical accounts nor computational implementations of abductive reasoning adequately address generating creative hypotheses. Theoretical frameworks do not provide a straightforward model for generating creative abductive hypotheses, computational systems largely implement syllogistic forms of abductive reasoning. We break down abductive computational systems into components and conclude by identifying specific directions for future research that could advance the state of creative abductive reasoning in computational systems.

Direct Advantage Regression: Aligning LLMs with Online AI RewardLi He, He Zhao, Stephen Wan et al.
Online AI Feedback (OAIF) presents a promising alternative to Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) by utilizing online AI preference in aligning language models (LLMs). However, the straightforward replacement of humans with AI deprives LLMs from learning more fine-grained AI supervision beyond binary signals. In this paper, we propose Direct Advantage Regression (DAR), a simple alignment algorithm using online AI reward to optimize policy improvement through weighted supervised fine-tuning. As an RL-free approach, DAR maintains theoretical consistency with online RLHF pipelines while significantly reducing implementation complexity and improving learning efficiency. Our empirical results underscore that AI reward is a better form of AI supervision consistently achieving higher human-AI agreement as opposed to AI preference. Additionally, evaluations using GPT-4-Turbo and MT-bench show that DAR outperforms both OAIF and online RLHF baselines.

Neural Rule-Execution Tracking Machine For Transformer-Based Text GenerationYufei Wang, Can Xu, Huang Hu et al.
Sequence-to-Sequence (S2S) neural text generation models, especially the pre-trained ones (e.g., BART and T5), have exhibited compelling performance on various natural language generation tasks. However, the black-box nature of these models limits their application in tasks where specific rules (e.g., controllable constraints, prior knowledge) need to be executed. Previous works either design specific model structure (e.g., Copy Mechanism corresponding to the rule "the generated output should include certain words in the source input") or implement specialized inference algorithm (e.g., Constrained Beam Search) to execute particular rules through the text generation. These methods require careful design case-by-case and are difficult to support multiple rules concurrently. In this paper, we propose a novel module named Neural Rule-Execution Tracking Machine that can be equipped into various transformer-based generators to leverage multiple rules simultaneously to guide the neural generation model for superior generation performance in a unified and scalable way. Extensive experimental results on several benchmarks verify the effectiveness of our proposed model in both controllable and general text generation.

ECOL-R: Encouraging Copying in Novel Object Captioning with Reinforcement LearningYufei Wang, Ian D. Wood, Stephen Wan et al.
Novel Object Captioning is a zero-shot Image Captioning task requiring describing objects not seen in the training captions, but for which information is available from external object detectors. The key challenge is to select and describe all salient detected novel objects in the input images. In this paper, we focus on this challenge and propose the ECOL-R model (Encouraging Copying of Object Labels with Reinforced Learning), a copy-augmented transformer model that is encouraged to accurately describe the novel object labels. This is achieved via a specialised reward function in the SCST reinforcement learning framework (Rennie et al., 2017) that encourages novel object mentions while maintaining the caption quality. We further restrict the SCST training to the images where detected objects are mentioned in reference captions to train the ECOL-R model. We additionally improve our copy mechanism via Abstract Labels, which transfer knowledge from known to novel object types, and a Morphological Selector, which determines the appropriate inflected forms of novel object labels. The resulting model sets new state-of-the-art on the nocaps (Agrawal et al., 2019) and held-out COCO (Hendricks et al., 2016) benchmarks.

Towards Generating Stylized Image Captions via Adversarial TrainingOmid Mohamad Nezami, Mark Dras, Stephen Wan et al.
While most image captioning aims to generate objective descriptions of images, the last few years have seen work on generating visually grounded image captions which have a specific style (e.g., incorporating positive or negative sentiment). However, because the stylistic component is typically the last part of training, current models usually pay more attention to the style at the expense of accurate content description. In addition, there is a lack of variability in terms of the stylistic aspects. To address these issues, we propose an image captioning model called ATTEND-GAN which has two core components: first, an attention-based caption generator to strongly correlate different parts of an image with different parts of a caption; and second, an adversarial training mechanism to assist the caption generator to add diverse stylistic components to the generated captions. Because of these components, ATTEND-GAN can generate correlated captions as well as more human-like variability of stylistic patterns. Our system outperforms the state-of-the-art as well as a collection of our baseline models. A linguistic analysis of the generated captions demonstrates that captions generated using ATTEND-GAN have a wider range of stylistic adjectives and adjective-noun pairs.

Image Captioning using Facial Expression and AttentionOmid Mohamad Nezami, Mark Dras, Stephen Wan et al.
Benefiting from advances in machine vision and natural language processing techniques, current image captioning systems are able to generate detailed visual descriptions. For the most part, these descriptions represent an objective characterisation of the image, although some models do incorporate subjective aspects related to the observer's view of the image, such as sentiment; current models, however, usually do not consider the emotional content of images during the caption generation process. This paper addresses this issue by proposing novel image captioning models which use facial expression features to generate image captions. The models generate image captions using long short-term memory networks applying facial features in addition to other visual features at different time steps. We compare a comprehensive collection of image captioning models with and without facial features using all standard evaluation metrics. The evaluation metrics indicate that applying facial features with an attention mechanism achieves the best performance, showing more expressive and more correlated image captions, on an image caption dataset extracted from the standard Flickr 30K dataset, consisting of around 11K images containing faces. An analysis of the generated captions finds that, perhaps unexpectedly, the improvement in caption quality appears to come not from the addition of adjectives linked to emotional aspects of the images, but from more variety in the actions described in the captions.

There are many different ways in which external information might be used in an NLP task. This paper investigates how external syntactic information can be used most effectively in the Semantic Role Labeling (SRL) task. We evaluate three different ways of encoding syntactic parses and three different ways of injecting them into a state-of-the-art neural ELMo-based SRL sequence labelling model. We show that using a constituency representation as input features improves performance the most, achieving a new state-of-the-art for non-ensemble SRL models on the in-domain CoNLL'05 and CoNLL'12 benchmarks.

Senti-Attend: Image Captioning using Sentiment and AttentionOmid Mohamad Nezami, Mark Dras, Stephen Wan et al.
There has been much recent work on image captioning models that describe the factual aspects of an image. Recently, some models have incorporated non-factual aspects into the captions, such as sentiment or style. However, such models typically have difficulty in balancing the semantic aspects of the image and the non-factual dimensions of the caption; in addition, it can be observed that humans may focus on different aspects of an image depending on the chosen sentiment or style of the caption. To address this, we design an attention-based model to better add sentiment to image captions. The model embeds and learns sentiment with respect to image-caption data, and uses both high-level and word-level sentiment information during the learning process. The model outperforms the state-of-the-art work in image captioning with sentiment using standard evaluation metrics. An analysis of generated captions also shows that our model does this by a better selection of the sentiment-bearing adjectives and adjective-noun pairs.

Automatic Recognition of Student Engagement using Deep Learning and Facial ExpressionOmid Mohamad Nezami, Mark Dras, Len Hamey et al.
Engagement is a key indicator of the quality of learning experience, and one that plays a major role in developing intelligent educational interfaces. Any such interface requires the ability to recognise the level of engagement in order to respond appropriately; however, there is very little existing data to learn from, and new data is expensive and difficult to acquire. This paper presents a deep learning model to improve engagement recognition from images that overcomes the data sparsity challenge by pre-training on readily available basic facial expression data, before training on specialised engagement data. In the first of two steps, a facial expression recognition model is trained to provide a rich face representation using deep learning. In the second step, we use the model's weights to initialize our deep learning based model to recognize engagement; we term this the engagement model. We train the model on our new engagement recognition dataset with 4627 engaged and disengaged samples. We find that the engagement model outperforms effective deep learning architectures that we apply for the first time to engagement recognition, as well as approaches using histogram of oriented gradients and support vector machines.
