A Deep Learning Method for Real-time Bias Correction of Wind Field Forecasts in the Western North Pacific

Wei Zhang, Yueyue Jiang, Junyu Dong et al.

Forecasts by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF; EC for short) can provide a basis for the establishment of maritime-disaster warning systems, but they contain some systematic biases. The fifth-generation EC atmospheric reanalysis (ERA5) data have high accuracy, but are delayed by about 5 days. To overcome this issue, a spatiotemporal deep-learning method could be used for nonlinear mapping between EC and ERA5 data, which would improve the quality of EC wind forecast data in real time. In this study, we developed the Multi-Task-Double Encoder Trajectory Gated Recurrent Unit (MT-DETrajGRU) model, which uses an improved double-encoder forecaster architecture to model the spatiotemporal sequence of the U and V components of the wind field; we designed a multi-task learning loss function to correct wind speed and wind direction simultaneously using only one model. The study area was the western North Pacific (WNP), and real-time rolling bias corrections were made for 10-day wind-field forecasts released by the EC between December 2020 and November 2021, divided into four seasons. Compared with the original EC forecasts, after correction using the MT-DETrajGRU model the wind speed and wind direction biases in the four seasons were reduced by 8-11% and 9-14%, respectively. In addition, the proposed method modelled the data uniformly under different weather conditions. The correction performance under normal and typhoon conditions was comparable, indicating that the data-driven mode constructed here is robust and generalizable.

UWStereo: A Large Synthetic Dataset for Underwater Stereo Matching

Qingxuan Lv, Junyu Dong, Yuezun Li et al.

Despite recent advances in stereo matching, the extension to intricate underwater settings remains unexplored, primarily owing to: 1) the reduced visibility, low contrast, and other adverse effects of underwater images; 2) the difficulty in obtaining ground truth data for training deep learning models, i.e. simultaneously capturing an image and estimating its corresponding pixel-wise depth information in underwater environments. To enable further advance in underwater stereo matching, we introduce a large synthetic dataset called UWStereo. Our dataset includes 29,568 synthetic stereo image pairs with dense and accurate disparity annotations for left view. We design four distinct underwater scenes filled with diverse objects such as corals, ships and robots. We also induce additional variations in camera model, lighting, and environmental effects. In comparison with existing underwater datasets, UWStereo is superior in terms of scale, variation, annotation, and photo-realistic image quality. To substantiate the efficacy of the UWStereo dataset, we undertake a comprehensive evaluation compared with nine state-of-the-art algorithms as benchmarks. The results indicate that current models still struggle to generalize to new domains. Hence, we design a new strategy that learns to reconstruct cross domain masked images before stereo matching training and integrate a cross view attention enhancement module that aggregates long-range content information to enhance the generalization ability.

Live and Learn: Continual Action Clustering with Incremental Views

Xiaoqiang Yan, Yingtao Gan, Yiqiao Mao et al.

Multi-view action clustering leverages the complementary information from different camera views to enhance the clustering performance. Although existing approaches have achieved significant progress, they assume all camera views are available in advance, which is impractical when the camera view is incremental over time. Besides, learning the invariant information among multiple camera views is still a challenging issue, especially in continual learning scenario. Aiming at these problems, we propose a novel continual action clustering (CAC) method, which is capable of learning action categories in a continual learning manner. To be specific, we first devise a category memory library, which captures and stores the learned categories from historical views. Then, as a new camera view arrives, we only need to maintain a consensus partition matrix, which can be updated by leveraging the incoming new camera view rather than keeping all of them. Finally, a three-step alternate optimization is proposed, in which the category memory library and consensus partition matrix are optimized. The empirical experimental results on 6 realistic multi-view action collections demonstrate the excellent clustering performance and time/space efficiency of the CAC compared with 15 state-of-the-art baselines.

Seeing Symbols, Missing Cultures: Probing Vision-Language Models' Reasoning on Fire Imagery and Cultural Meaning

Haorui Yu, Yang Zhao, Yijia Chu et al.

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) often appear culturally competent but rely on superficial pattern matching rather than genuine cultural understanding. We introduce a diagnostic framework to probe VLM reasoning on fire-themed cultural imagery through both classification and explanation analysis. Testing multiple models on Western festivals, non-Western traditions, and emergency scenes reveals systematic biases: models correctly identify prominent Western festivals but struggle with underrepresented cultural events, frequently offering vague labels or dangerously misclassifying emergencies as celebrations. These failures expose the risks of symbolic shortcuts and highlight the need for cultural evaluation beyond accuracy metrics to ensure interpretable and fair multimodal systems.

High-order Neighborhoods Know More: HyperGraph Learning Meets Source-free Unsupervised Domain Adaptation

Jinkun Jiang, Qingxuan Lv, Yuezun Li et al.

Source-free Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (SFDA) aims to classify target samples by only accessing a pre-trained source model and unlabelled target samples. Since no source data is available, transferring the knowledge from the source domain to the target domain is challenging. Existing methods normally exploit the pair-wise relation among target samples and attempt to discover their correlations by clustering these samples based on semantic features. The drawback of these methods includes: 1) the pair-wise relation is limited to exposing the underlying correlations of two more samples, hindering the exploration of the structural information embedded in the target domain; 2) the clustering process only relies on the semantic feature, while overlooking the critical effect of domain shift, i.e., the distribution differences between the source and target domains. To address these issues, we propose a new SFDA method that exploits the high-order neighborhood relation and explicitly takes the domain shift effect into account. Specifically, we formulate the SFDA as a Hypergraph learning problem and construct hyperedges to explore the local group and context information among multiple samples. Moreover, we integrate a self-loop strategy into the constructed hypergraph to elegantly introduce the domain uncertainty of each sample. By clustering these samples based on hyperedges, both the semantic feature and domain shift effects are considered. We then describe an adaptive relation-based objective to tune the model with soft attention levels for all samples. Extensive experiments are conducted on Office-31, Office-Home, VisDA, and PointDA-10 datasets. The results demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art counterparts.

Dual Discriminator Adversarial Distillation for Data-free Model Compression

Haoran Zhao, Xin Sun, Junyu Dong et al.

Knowledge distillation has been widely used to produce portable and efficient neural networks which can be well applied on edge devices for computer vision tasks. However, almost all top-performing knowledge distillation methods need to access the original training data, which usually has a huge size and is often unavailable. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel data-free approach in this paper, named Dual Discriminator Adversarial Distillation (DDAD) to distill a neural network without any training data or meta-data. To be specific, we use a generator to create samples through dual discriminator adversarial distillation, which mimics the original training data. The generator not only uses the pre-trained teacher's intrinsic statistics in existing batch normalization layers but also obtains the maximum discrepancy from the student model. Then the generated samples are used to train the compact student network under the supervision of the teacher. The proposed method obtains an efficient student network which closely approximates its teacher network, despite using no original training data. Extensive experiments are conducted to to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100 and Caltech101 datasets for classification tasks. Moreover, we extend our method to semantic segmentation tasks on several public datasets such as CamVid and NYUv2. All experiments show that our method outperforms all baselines for data-free knowledge distillation.

Similarity Transfer for Knowledge Distillation

Haoran Zhao, Kun Gong, Xin Sun et al.

Knowledge distillation is a popular paradigm for learning portable neural networks by transferring the knowledge from a large model into a smaller one. Most existing approaches enhance the student model by utilizing the similarity information between the categories of instance level provided by the teacher model. However, these works ignore the similarity correlation between different instances that plays an important role in confidence prediction. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel method in this paper, called similarity transfer for knowledge distillation (STKD), which aims to fully utilize the similarities between categories of multiple samples. Furthermore, we propose to better capture the similarity correlation between different instances by the mixup technique, which creates virtual samples by a weighted linear interpolation. Note that, our distillation loss can fully utilize the incorrect classes similarities by the mixed labels. The proposed approach promotes the performance of student model as the virtual sample created by multiple images produces a similar probability distribution in the teacher and student networks. Experiments and ablation studies on several public classification datasets including CIFAR-10,CIFAR-100,CINIC-10 and Tiny-ImageNet verify that this light-weight method can effectively boost the performance of the compact student model. It shows that STKD substantially has outperformed the vanilla knowledge distillation and has achieved superior accuracy over the state-of-the-art knowledge distillation methods.

3D Facial Geometry Recovery from a Depth View with Attention Guided Generative Adversarial Network

Xiaoxu Cai, Hui Yu, Jianwen Lou et al.

We present to recover the complete 3D facial geometry from a single depth view by proposing an Attention Guided Generative Adversarial Networks (AGGAN). In contrast to existing work which normally requires two or more depth views to recover a full 3D facial geometry, the proposed AGGAN is able to generate a dense 3D voxel grid of the face from a single unconstrained depth view. Specifically, AGGAN encodes the 3D facial geometry within a voxel space and utilizes an attention-guided GAN to model the illposed 2.5D depth-3D mapping. Multiple loss functions, which enforce the 3D facial geometry consistency, together with a prior distribution of facial surface points in voxel space are incorporated to guide the training process. Both qualitative and quantitative comparisons show that AGGAN recovers a more complete and smoother 3D facial shape, with the capability to handle a much wider range of view angles and resist to noise in the depth view than conventional methods

Real-time 3D Facial Tracking via Cascaded Compositional Learning

Jianwen Lou, Xiaoxu Cai, Junyu Dong et al.

We propose to learn a cascade of globally-optimized modular boosted ferns (GoMBF) to solve multi-modal facial motion regression for real-time 3D facial tracking from a monocular RGB camera. GoMBF is a deep composition of multiple regression models with each is a boosted ferns initially trained to predict partial motion parameters of the same modality, and then concatenated together via a global optimization step to form a singular strong boosted ferns that can effectively handle the whole regression target. It can explicitly cope with the modality variety in output variables, while manifesting increased fitting power and a faster learning speed comparing against the conventional boosted ferns. By further cascading a sequence of GoMBFs (GoMBF-Cascade) to regress facial motion parameters, we achieve competitive tracking performance on a variety of in-the-wild videos comparing to the state-of-the-art methods, which require much more training data or have higher computational complexity. It provides a robust and highly elegant solution to real-time 3D facial tracking using a small set of training data and hence makes it more practical in real-world applications.

PIoU Loss: Towards Accurate Oriented Object Detection in Complex Environments

Zhiming Chen, Kean Chen, Weiyao Lin et al.

Object detection using an oriented bounding box (OBB) can better target rotated objects by reducing the overlap with background areas. Existing OBB approaches are mostly built on horizontal bounding box detectors by introducing an additional angle dimension optimized by a distance loss. However, as the distance loss only minimizes the angle error of the OBB and that it loosely correlates to the IoU, it is insensitive to objects with high aspect ratios. Therefore, a novel loss, Pixels-IoU (PIoU) Loss, is formulated to exploit both the angle and IoU for accurate OBB regression. The PIoU loss is derived from IoU metric with a pixel-wise form, which is simple and suitable for both horizontal and oriented bounding box. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we evaluate the PIoU loss on both anchor-based and anchor-free frameworks. The experimental results show that PIoU loss can dramatically improve the performance of OBB detectors, particularly on objects with high aspect ratios and complex backgrounds. Besides, previous evaluation datasets did not include scenarios where the objects have high aspect ratios, hence a new dataset, Retail50K, is introduced to encourage the community to adapt OBB detectors for more complex environments.

Parallel Medical Imaging for Intelligent Medical Image Analysis: Concepts, Methods, and Applications

Chao Gou, Tianyu Shen, Wenbo Zheng et al.

There has been much progress in data-driven artificial intelligence technology for medical image analysis in the last decades. However, it still remains challenging due to its distinctive complexity of acquiring and annotating image data, extracting medical domain knowledge, and explaining the diagnostic decision for medical image analysis. In this paper, we propose a data-knowledge-driven framework termed as Parallel Medical Imaging (PMI) for intelligent medical image analysis based on the methodology of interactive ACP-based parallel intelligence. In the PMI framework, computational experiments with predictive learning in a data-driven way are conducted to extract medical knowledge for diagnostic decision support. Artificial imaging systems are introduced to select and prescriptively generate medical image data in a knowledge-driven way to utilize medical domain knowledge. Through the closed-loop optimization based on parallel execution, our proposed PMI framework can boost the generalization ability and alleviate the limitation of medical interpretation for diagnostic decisions. Furthermore, we illustrate the preliminary implementation of PMI method through the case studies of mammogram analysis and skin lesion image analysis. Experimental results on several public medical image datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed PMI.

Dense 3D Facial Reconstruction from a Single Depth Image in Unconstrained Environment

Shu Zhang, Hui Yu, Ting Wang et al.

With the increasing demands of applications in virtual reality such as 3D films, virtual Human-Machine Interactions and virtual agents, the analysis of 3D human face analysis is considered to be more and more important as a fundamental step for those virtual reality tasks. Due to information provided by an additional dimension, 3D facial reconstruction enables aforementioned tasks to be achieved with higher accuracy than those based on 2D facial analysis. The denser the 3D facial model is, the more information it could provide. However, most existing dense 3D facial reconstruction methods require complicated processing and high system cost. To this end, this paper presents a novel method that simplifies the process of dense 3D facial reconstruction by employing only one frame of depth data obtained with an off-the-shelf RGB-D sensor. The experiments showed competitive results with real world data.

Ship Detection and Segmentation using Image Correlation

Alexander Kadyrov, Hui Yu, Honghai Liu

There have been intensive research interests in ship detection and segmentation due to high demands on a wide range of civil applications in the last two decades. However, existing approaches, which are mainly based on statistical properties of images, fail to detect smaller ships and boats. Specifically, known techniques are not robust enough in view of inevitable small geometric and photometric changes in images consisting of ships. In this paper a novel approach for ship detection is proposed based on correlation of maritime images. The idea comes from the observation that a fine pattern of the sea surface changes considerably from time to time whereas the ship appearance basically keeps unchanged. We want to examine whether the images have a common unaltered part, a ship in this case. To this end, we developed a method - Focused Correlation (FC) to achieve robustness to geometric distortions of the image content. Various experiments have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
