Deep learning based on Transformer architecture for power system short-term voltage stability assessment with class imbalanceYang Li, Jiting Cao, Yan Xu et al.
Most existing data-driven power system short-term voltage stability assessment (STVSA) approaches presume class-balanced input data. However, in practical applications, the occurrence of short-term voltage instability following a disturbance is minimal, leading to a significant class imbalance problem and a consequent decline in classifier performance. This work proposes a Transformer-based STVSA method to address this challenge. By utilizing the basic Transformer architecture, a stability assessment Transformer (StaaT) is developed {as a classification model to reflect the correlation between the operational states of the system and the resulting stability outcomes}. To combat the negative impact of imbalanced datasets, this work employs a conditional Wasserstein generative adversarial network with gradient penalty (CWGAN-GP) for synthetic data generation, aiding in the creation of a balanced, representative training set for the classifier. Semi-supervised clustering learning is implemented to enhance clustering quality, addressing the lack of a unified quantitative criterion for short-term voltage stability. {Numerical tests on the IEEE 39-bus test system extensively demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits robust performance under class imbalances up to 100:1 and noisy environments, and maintains consistent effectiveness even with an increased penetration of renewable energy}. Comparative results reveal that the CWGAN-GP generates more balanced datasets than traditional oversampling methods and that the StaaT outperforms other deep learning algorithms. This study presents a compelling solution for real-world STVSA applications that often face class imbalance and data noise challenges.

Lightweight Multimodal LLM-Enabled Cost-Effective Defect Grading of Power Transmission EquipmentTao Wang, Lipeng Zhu, Jiayong Li et al.
Defect grading of power transmission equipment (DGPTE) is crucial to the stability of electric energy transmission. Although existing machine learning methods exhibit strong capabilities in defect detection, they are plagued by difficulties in integrating expert experience and facing class imbalance in more refined defect grading field. To address this issue, this paper introduces a novel defect grading framework based on multimodal large language model (MLLM). Specifically, this approach maximizes the commercial MLLMs' potential of DGPTE through in-context learning and obtains the state-of-te-art (SOTA) model. By sending a secondary request to this model, a small number of chain of thought-based question-answer pairs (Q\&As) are generated, which effectively reduces the cost of manual annotation. In this way, these high-quality interpretable Q\&As are used to train Qwen3-VL-8B via Low-Rank Adaption-based supervised fine-tuning (SFT). Experimental results on three DGPTE tasks demonstrate that fine-tuning only the language model layer yields the SOTA performance. Furthermore, multi-task joint fine-tuning verifies the feasibility of handling multiple grading tasks within only a single lightweight MLLM.

Data-Driven Short-Term Voltage Stability Assessment Based on Spatial-Temporal Graph Convolutional NetworkYonghong Luo, Chao Lu, Lipeng Zhu et al.
Post-fault dynamics of short-term voltage stability (SVS) present spatial-temporal characteristics, but the existing data-driven methods for online SVS assessment fail to incorporate such characteristics into their models effectively. Confronted with this dilemma, this paper develops a novel spatial-temporal graph convolutional network (STGCN) to address this problem. The proposed STGCN utilizes graph convolution to integrate network topology information into the learning model to exploit spatial information. Then, it adopts one-dimensional convolution to exploit temporal information. In this way, it models the spatial-temporal characteristics of SVS with complete convolutional structures. After that, a node layer and a system layer are strategically designed in the STGCN for SVS assessment. The proposed STGCN incorporates the characteristics of SVS into the data-driven classification model. It can result in higher assessment accuracy, better robustness and adaptability than conventional methods. Besides, parameters in the system layer can provide valuable information about the influences of individual buses on SVS. Test results on the real-world Guangdong Power Grid in South China verify the effectiveness of the proposed network.

Discovering and Understanding the Security Hazards in the Interactions between IoT Devices, Mobile Apps, and Clouds on Smart Home PlatformsWei Zhou, Yan Jia, Yao Yao et al.
A smart home connects tens of home devices to the Internet, where an IoT cloud runs various home automation applications. While bringing unprecedented convenience and accessibility, it also introduces various security hazards to users. Prior research studied smart home security from several aspects. However, we found that the complexity of the interactions among the participating entities (i.e., devices, IoT clouds, and mobile apps) has not yet been systematically investigated. In this work, we conducted an in-depth analysis of five widely-used smart home platforms. Combining firmware analysis, network traffic interception, and blackbox testing, we reverse-engineered the details of the interactions among the participating entities. Based on the details, we inferred three legitimate state transition diagrams for the three entities, respectively. Using these state machines as a reference model, we identified a set of unexpected state transitions. To confirm and trigger the unexpected state transitions, we implemented a set of phantom devices to mimic a real device. By instructing the phantom devices to intervene in the normal entity-entity interactions, we have discovered several new vulnerabilities and a spectrum of attacks against real-world smart home platforms.
