DiffCR: A Fast Conditional Diffusion Framework for Cloud Removal from Optical Satellite Images

Xuechao Zou, Kai Li, Junliang Xing et al.

Optical satellite images are a critical data source; however, cloud cover often compromises their quality, hindering image applications and analysis. Consequently, effectively removing clouds from optical satellite images has emerged as a prominent research direction. While recent advancements in cloud removal primarily rely on generative adversarial networks, which may yield suboptimal image quality, diffusion models have demonstrated remarkable success in diverse image-generation tasks, showcasing their potential in addressing this challenge. This paper presents a novel framework called DiffCR, which leverages conditional guided diffusion with deep convolutional networks for high-performance cloud removal for optical satellite imagery. Specifically, we introduce a decoupled encoder for conditional image feature extraction, providing a robust color representation to ensure the close similarity of appearance information between the conditional input and the synthesized output. Moreover, we propose a novel and efficient time and condition fusion block within the cloud removal model to accurately simulate the correspondence between the appearance in the conditional image and the target image at a low computational cost. Extensive experimental evaluations on two commonly used benchmark datasets demonstrate that DiffCR consistently achieves state-of-the-art performance on all metrics, with parameter and computational complexities amounting to only 5.1% and 5.4%, respectively, of those previous best methods. The source code, pre-trained models, and all the experimental results will be publicly available at https://github.com/XavierJiezou/DiffCR upon the paper's acceptance of this work.

FlowFace++: Explicit Semantic Flow-supervised End-to-End Face Swapping

Yu Zhang, Hao Zeng, Bowen Ma et al.

This work proposes a novel face-swapping framework FlowFace++, utilizing explicit semantic flow supervision and end-to-end architecture to facilitate shape-aware face-swapping. Specifically, our work pretrains a facial shape discriminator to supervise the face swapping network. The discriminator is shape-aware and relies on a semantic flow-guided operation to explicitly calculate the shape discrepancies between the target and source faces, thus optimizing the face swapping network to generate highly realistic results. The face swapping network is a stack of a pre-trained face-masked autoencoder (MAE), a cross-attention fusion module, and a convolutional decoder. The MAE provides a fine-grained facial image representation space, which is unified for the target and source faces and thus facilitates final realistic results. The cross-attention fusion module carries out the source-to-target face swapping in a fine-grained latent space while preserving other attributes of the target image (e.g. expression, head pose, hair, background, illumination, etc). Lastly, the convolutional decoder further synthesizes the swapping results according to the face-swapping latent embedding from the cross-attention fusion module. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments on in-the-wild faces demonstrate that our FlowFace++ outperforms the state-of-the-art significantly, particularly while the source face is obstructed by uneven lighting or angle offset.

Mutual Information Assisted Ensemble Recommender System for Identifying Critical Risk Factors in Healthcare Prognosis

Abhishek Dey, Debayan Goswami, Rahul Roy et al.

Purpose: Health recommenders act as important decision support systems, aiding patients and medical professionals in taking actions that lead to patients' well-being. These systems extract the information which may be of particular relevance to the end-user, helping them in making appropriate decisions. The present study proposes a feature recommender, as a part of a disease management system, that identifies and recommends the most important risk factors for an illness. Methods: A novel mutual information and ensemble-based feature ranking approach for identifying critical risk factors in healthcare prognosis is proposed. Results: To establish the effectiveness of the proposed method, experiments have been conducted on four benchmark datasets of diverse diseases (clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), chronic kidney disease, Indian liver patient, and cervical cancer risk factors). The performance of the proposed recommender is compared with four state-of-the-art methods using recommender systems' performance metrics like average precision@K, precision@K, recall@K, F1@K, reciprocal rank@K. The method is able to recommend all relevant critical risk factors for ccRCC. It also attains a higher accuracy (96.6% and 98.6% using support vector machine and neural network, respectively) for ccRCC staging with a reduced feature set as compared to existing methods. Moreover, the top two features recommended using the proposed method with ccRCC, viz. size of tumor and metastasis status, are medically validated from the existing TNM system. Results are also found to be superior for the other three datasets. Conclusion: The proposed recommender can identify and recommend risk factors that have the most discriminating power for detecting diseases.

Hybrid Energy-Aware Reward Shaping: A Unified Lightweight Physics-Guided Methodology for Policy Optimization

Qijun Liao, Jue Yang, Yiting Kang et al.

Deep reinforcement learning excels in continuous control but often requires extensive exploration, while physics-based models demand complete equations and suffer cubic complexity. This study proposes Hybrid Energy-Aware Reward Shaping (H-EARS), unifying potential-based reward shaping with energy-aware action regularization. H-EARS constrains action magnitude while balancing task-specific and energy-based potentials via functional decomposition, achieving linear complexity O(n) by capturing dominant energy components without full dynamics. We establish a theoretical foundation including: (1) functional independence for separate task/energy optimization; (2) energy-based convergence acceleration; (3) convergence guarantees under function approximation; and (4) approximate potential error bounds. Lyapunov stability connections are analyzed as heuristic guides. Experiments across baselines show improved convergence, stability, and energy efficiency. Vehicle simulations validate applicability in safety-critical domains under extreme conditions. Results confirm that integrating lightweight physics priors enhances model-free RL without complete system models, enabling transfer from lab research to industrial applications.

EmbodiedBrain: Expanding Performance Boundaries of Task Planning for Embodied Intelligence

Ding Zou, Feifan Wang, Mengyu Ge et al.

The realization of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) necessitates Embodied AI agents capable of robust spatial perception, effective task planning, and adaptive execution in physical environments. However, current large language models (LLMs) and multimodal LLMs (MLLMs) for embodied tasks suffer from key limitations, including a significant gap between model design and agent requirements, an unavoidable trade-off between real-time latency and performance, and the use of unauthentic, offline evaluation metrics. To address these challenges, we propose EmbodiedBrain, a novel vision-language foundation model available in both 7B and 32B parameter sizes. Our framework features an agent-aligned data structure and employs a powerful training methodology that integrates large-scale Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) with Step-Augumented Group Relative Policy Optimization (Step-GRPO), which boosts long-horizon task success by integrating preceding steps as Guided Precursors. Furthermore, we incorporate a comprehensive reward system, including a Generative Reward Model (GRM) accelerated at the infrastructure level, to improve training efficiency. For enable thorough validation, we establish a three-part evaluation system encompassing General, Planning, and End-to-End Simulation Benchmarks, highlighted by the proposal and open-sourcing of a novel, challenging simulation environment. Experimental results demonstrate that EmbodiedBrain achieves superior performance across all metrics, establishing a new state-of-the-art for embodied foundation models. Towards paving the way for the next generation of generalist embodied agents, we open-source all of our data, model weight, and evaluating methods, which are available at https://zterobot.github.io/EmbodiedBrain.github.io.

BHViT: Binarized Hybrid Vision Transformer

Tian Gao, Zhiyuan Zhang, Yu Zhang et al.

Model binarization has made significant progress in enabling real-time and energy-efficient computation for convolutional neural networks (CNN), offering a potential solution to the deployment challenges faced by Vision Transformers (ViTs) on edge devices. However, due to the structural differences between CNN and Transformer architectures, simply applying binary CNN strategies to the ViT models will lead to a significant performance drop. To tackle this challenge, we propose BHViT, a binarization-friendly hybrid ViT architecture and its full binarization model with the guidance of three important observations. Initially, BHViT utilizes the local information interaction and hierarchical feature aggregation technique from coarse to fine levels to address redundant computations stemming from excessive tokens. Then, a novel module based on shift operations is proposed to enhance the performance of the binary Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) module without significantly increasing computational overhead. In addition, an innovative attention matrix binarization method based on quantization decomposition is proposed to evaluate the token's importance in the binarized attention matrix. Finally, we propose a regularization loss to address the inadequate optimization caused by the incompatibility between the weight oscillation in the binary layers and the Adam Optimizer. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm achieves SOTA performance among binary ViT methods.

Scalable MatMul-free Language Modeling

Rui-Jie Zhu, Yu Zhang, Steven Abreu et al.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have fundamentally altered how we approach scaling in machine learning. However, these models pose substantial computational and memory challenges, primarily due to the reliance on matrix multiplication (MatMul) within their attention and feed-forward (FFN) layers. We demonstrate that MatMul operations can be eliminated from LLMs while maintaining strong performance, even at billion-parameter scales. Our MatMul-free models, tested on models up to 2.7B parameters, are comparable to state-of-the-art pre-trained Transformers, and the performance gap narrows as model size increases. Our approach yields significant memory savings: a GPU-efficient implementation reduces memory consumption by up to 61% during training and over 10x during inference. When adapted for a multi-chip neuromorphic system, the model leverages asynchronous processing to achieve 4x higher throughput with 10x less energy than edge GPUs.

Deep image prior for undersampling high-speed photoacoustic microscopy

Tri Vu, Anthony DiSpirito, Daiwei Li et al.

Photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) is an emerging imaging method combining light and sound. However, limited by the laser's repetition rate, state-of-the-art high-speed PAM technology often sacrifices spatial sampling density (i.e., undersampling) for increased imaging speed over a large field-of-view. Deep learning (DL) methods have recently been used to improve sparsely sampled PAM images; however, these methods often require time-consuming pre-training and large training dataset with ground truth. Here, we propose the use of deep image prior (DIP) to improve the image quality of undersampled PAM images. Unlike other DL approaches, DIP requires neither pre-training nor fully-sampled ground truth, enabling its flexible and fast implementation on various imaging targets. Our results have demonstrated substantial improvement in PAM images with as few as 1.4$\%$ of the fully sampled pixels on high-speed PAM. Our approach outperforms interpolation, is competitive with pre-trained supervised DL method, and is readily translated to other high-speed, undersampling imaging modalities.
