Lessons learned from the NeurIPS 2021 MetaDL challenge: Backbone fine-tuning without episodic meta-learning dominates for few-shot learning image classification

Although deep neural networks are capable of achieving performance superior to humans on various tasks, they are notorious for requiring large amounts of data and computing resources, restricting their success to domains where such resources are available. Metalearning methods can address this problem by transferring knowledge from related tasks, thus reducing the amount of data and computing resources needed to learn new tasks. We organize the MetaDL competition series, which provide opportunities for research groups all over the world to create and experimentally assess new meta-(deep)learning solutions for real problems. In this paper, authored collaboratively between the competition organizers and the top-ranked participants, we describe the design of the competition, the datasets, the best experimental results, as well as the top-ranked methods in the NeurIPS 2021 challenge, which attracted 15 active teams who made it to the final phase (by outperforming the baseline), making over 100 code submissions during the feedback phase. The solutions of the top participants have been open-sourced. The lessons learned include that learning good representations is essential for effective transfer learning.

NeurIPS'22 Cross-Domain MetaDL competition: Design and baseline results

We present the design and baseline results for a new challenge in the ChaLearn meta-learning series, accepted at NeurIPS'22, focusing on "cross-domain" meta-learning. Meta-learning aims to leverage experience gained from previous tasks to solve new tasks efficiently (i.e., with better performance, little training data, and/or modest computational resources). While previous challenges in the series focused on within-domain few-shot learning problems, with the aim of learning efficiently N-way k-shot tasks (i.e., N class classification problems with k training examples), this competition challenges the participants to solve "any-way" and "any-shot" problems drawn from various domains (healthcare, ecology, biology, manufacturing, and others), chosen for their humanitarian and societal impact. To that end, we created Meta-Album, a meta-dataset of 40 image classification datasets from 10 domains, from which we carve out tasks with any number of "ways" (within the range 2-20) and any number of "shots" (within the range 1-20). The competition is with code submission, fully blind-tested on the CodaLab challenge platform. The code of the winners will be open-sourced, enabling the deployment of automated machine learning solutions for few-shot image classification across several domains.

Meta-Album: Multi-domain Meta-Dataset for Few-Shot Image Classification

We introduce Meta-Album, an image classification meta-dataset designed to facilitate few-shot learning, transfer learning, meta-learning, among other tasks. It includes 40 open datasets, each having at least 20 classes with 40 examples per class, with verified licences. They stem from diverse domains, such as ecology (fauna and flora), manufacturing (textures, vehicles), human actions, and optical character recognition, featuring various image scales (microscopic, human scales, remote sensing). All datasets are preprocessed, annotated, and formatted uniformly, and come in 3 versions (Micro $\subset$ Mini $\subset$ Extended) to match users' computational resources. We showcase the utility of the first 30 datasets on few-shot learning problems. The other 10 will be released shortly after. Meta-Album is already more diverse and larger (in number of datasets) than similar efforts, and we are committed to keep enlarging it via a series of competitions. As competitions terminate, their test data are released, thus creating a rolling benchmark, available through OpenML.org. Our website https://meta-album.github.io/ contains the source code of challenge winning methods, baseline methods, data loaders, and instructions for contributing either new datasets or algorithms to our expandable meta-dataset.

FAIR Universe Weak Lensing ML Uncertainty Challenge: Handling Uncertainties and Distribution Shifts for Precision Cosmology

Weak gravitational lensing, the correlated distortion of background galaxy shapes by foreground structures, is a powerful probe of the matter distribution in our universe and allows accurate constraints on the cosmological model. In recent years, high-order statistics and machine learning (ML) techniques have been applied to weak lensing data to extract the nonlinear information beyond traditional two-point analysis. However, these methods typically rely on cosmological simulations, which poses several challenges: simulations are computationally expensive, limiting most realistic setups to a low training data regime; inaccurate modeling of systematics in the simulations create distribution shifts that can bias cosmological parameter constraints; and varying simulation setups across studies make method comparison difficult. To address these difficulties, we present the first weak lensing benchmark dataset with several realistic systematics and launch the FAIR Universe Weak Lensing Machine Learning Uncertainty Challenge. The challenge focuses on measuring the fundamental properties of the universe from weak lensing data with limited training set and potential distribution shifts, while providing a standardized benchmark for rigorous comparison across methods. Organized in two phases, the challenge will bring together the physics and ML communities to advance the methodologies for handling systematic uncertainties, data efficiency, and distribution shifts in weak lensing analysis with ML, ultimately facilitating the deployment of ML approaches into upcoming weak lensing survey analysis.

Croissant Tasks: A Metadata Format for Reproducible Machine Learning Evaluations

Reproducibility is fundamental to the scientific method, yet remains a critical challenge in machine learning. Contributing factors include underspecified execution details and brittle software environments. Human-centric remedies, such as checklists and manual verification, help but require intensive effort and fail to scale. To address this, we introduce Croissant Tasks: a declarative, machine-actionable metadata format that abstracts low-level implementation details into high-level specifications. This format enables conceptual reproducibility: verifying claims via independent, agent-generated implementations rather than brittle source code replication. We contribute: (1) the Croissant Tasks specification, formally decoupling task problem from solution; (2) an automated LLM pipeline that retrofits existing benchmarks into this format; and (3) empirical validation showing autonomous agents can ingest these specifications to generate functional, accurate reproduction pipelines from scratch. We envision this format as a new foundation for automated and conceptual reproducibility in machine learning.

SegSTRONG-C: Segmenting Surgical Tools Robustly On Non-adversarial Generated Corruptions -- An EndoVis'24 Challenge

Surgical data science has seen rapid advancement due to the excellent performance of end-to-end deep neural networks (DNNs) for surgical video analysis. Despite their successes, end-to-end DNNs have been proven susceptible to even minor corruptions, substantially impairing the model's performance. This vulnerability has become a major concern for the translation of cutting-edge technology, especially for high-stakes decision-making in surgical data science. We introduce SegSTRONG-C, a benchmark and challenge in surgical data science dedicated, aiming to better understand model deterioration under unforeseen but plausible non-adversarial corruption and the capabilities of contemporary methods that seek to improve it. Through comprehensive baseline experiments and participating submissions from widespread community engagement, SegSTRONG-C reveals key themes for model failure and identifies promising directions for improving robustness. The performance of challenge winners, achieving an average 0.9394 DSC and 0.9301 NSD across the unreleased test sets with corruption types: bleeding, smoke, and low brightness, shows inspiring improvement of 0.1471 DSC and 0.2584 NSD in average comparing to strongest baseline methods with UNet architecture trained with AutoAugment. In conclusion, the SegSTRONG-C challenge has identified some practical approaches for enhancing model robustness, yet most approaches relied on conventional techniques that have known, and sometimes quite severe, limitations. Looking ahead, we advocate for expanding intellectual diversity and creativity in non-adversarial robustness beyond data augmentation or training scale, calling for new paradigms that enhance universal robustness to corruptions and may enable richer applications in surgical data science.

Stylized Meta-Album: Group-bias injection with style transfer to study robustness against distribution shifts

We introduce Stylized Meta-Album (SMA), a new image classification meta-dataset comprising 24 datasets (12 content datasets, and 12 stylized datasets), designed to advance studies on out-of-distribution (OOD) generalization and related topics. Created using style transfer techniques from 12 subject classification datasets, SMA provides a diverse and extensive set of 4800 groups, combining various subjects (objects, plants, animals, human actions, textures) with multiple styles. SMA enables flexible control over groups and classes, allowing us to configure datasets to reflect diverse benchmark scenarios. While ideally, data collection would capture extensive group diversity, practical constraints often make this infeasible. SMA addresses this by enabling large and configurable group structures through flexible control over styles, subject classes, and domains-allowing datasets to reflect a wide range of real-world benchmark scenarios. This design not only expands group and class diversity, but also opens new methodological directions for evaluating model performance across diverse group and domain configurations-including scenarios with many minority groups, varying group imbalance, and complex domain shifts-and for studying fairness, robustness, and adaptation under a broader range of realistic conditions. To demonstrate SMA's effectiveness, we implemented two benchmarks: (1) a novel OOD generalization and group fairness benchmark leveraging SMA's domain, class, and group diversity to evaluate existing benchmarks. Our findings reveal that while simple balancing and algorithms utilizing group information remain competitive as claimed in previous benchmarks, increasing group diversity significantly impacts fairness, altering the superiority and relative rankings of algorithms. We also propose to use \textit{Top-M worst group accuracy} as a new hyperparameter tuning metric, demonstrating broader fairness during optimization and delivering better final worst-group accuracy for larger group diversity. (2) An unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) benchmark utilizing SMA's group diversity to evaluate UDA algorithms across more scenarios, offering a more comprehensive benchmark with lower error bars (reduced by 73\% and 28\% in closed-set setting and UniDA setting, respectively) compared to existing efforts. These use cases highlight SMA's potential to significantly impact the outcomes of conventional benchmarks.

SSTL: Self-Sensing Tendon Loop for Hysteresis Modeling and Compensation in Tendon-Sheath Mechanisms

Flexible endoscopic robots enable minimally invasive access through natural orifices, but their control accuracy is limited by configuration-dependent hysteresis in the tendon-sheath mechanisms (TSMs). Tendon-sheath friction and tendon elasticity induce a systematic discrepancy between the proximal actuation input and distal output, and this discrepancy varies with the insertion tube configuration. To address this challenge, this paper proposes the Self-Sensing Tendon Loop (SSTL), a double-pass tendon loop routed through the insertion tube and wrapped around a distal pulley, and returned to the proximal end. The loop structure allows both the input and output tensions of the SSTL to be measured proximally, thereby providing an input-output tension profile without requiring distal force or fiber-optic sensors. Because the SSTL shares the same routing path as the actuation TSM, the two TSMs exhibit strongly correlated hysteresis behaviors. From the SSTL tension profile, a learning-based mapping estimates the configuration-dependent hysteresis parameters of the actuation TSM, which are then used by a feedforward controller to compensate for actuation hysteresis. We validate the proposed method by tracking actuation tendon tension under three different insertion tube configurations. Across sinusoidal and random trajectories, the proposed method reduces average RMSE by 88.1% compared with the uncompensated baseline, achieving 97.8% of the performance of direct identification, which requires direct measurement of the input and output tension profile of the actuation TSM.

Point Tracking in Surgery--The 2024 Surgical Tattoos in Infrared (STIR) Challenge

Understanding tissue motion in surgery is crucial to enable applications in downstream tasks such as segmentation, 3D reconstruction, virtual tissue landmarking, autonomous probe-based scanning, and subtask autonomy. Labeled data are essential to enabling algorithms in these downstream tasks since they allow us to quantify and train algorithms. This paper introduces a point tracking challenge to address this, wherein participants can submit their algorithms for quantification. The submitted algorithms are evaluated using a dataset named surgical tattoos in infrared (STIR), with the challenge aptly named the STIR Challenge 2024. The STIR Challenge 2024 comprises two quantitative components: accuracy and efficiency. The accuracy component tests the accuracy of algorithms on in vivo and ex vivo sequences. The efficiency component tests the latency of algorithm inference. The challenge was conducted as a part of MICCAI EndoVis 2024. In this challenge, we had 8 total teams, with 4 teams submitting before and 4 submitting after challenge day. This paper details the STIR Challenge 2024, which serves to move the field towards more accurate and efficient algorithms for spatial understanding in surgery. In this paper we summarize the design, submissions, and results from the challenge. Markerless 6D Pose Estimation and Position-Based Visual Servoing for Endoscopic Continuum Manipulators

Continuum manipulators in flexible endoscopic surgical systems offer high dexterity for minimally invasive procedures; however, accurate pose estimation and closed-loop control remain challenging due to hysteresis, compliance, and limited distal sensing. Vision-based approaches reduce hardware complexity but are often constrained by limited geometric observability and high computational overhead, restricting real-time closed-loop applicability. This paper presents a unified framework for markerless stereo 6D pose estimation and position-based visual servoing of continuum manipulators. A photo-realistic simulation pipeline enables large-scale automatic training with pixel-accurate annotations. A stereo-aware multi-feature fusion network jointly exploits segmentation masks, keypoints, heatmaps, and bounding boxes to enhance geometric observability. To enforce geometric consistency without iterative optimization, a feed-forward rendering-based refinement module predicts residual pose corrections in a single pass. A self-supervised sim-to-real adaptation strategy further improves real-world performance using unlabeled data. Extensive real-world validation achieves a mean translation error of 0.83 mm and a mean rotation error of 2.76° across 1,000 samples. Markerless closed-loop visual servoing driven by the estimated pose attains accurate trajectory tracking with a mean translation error of 2.07 mm and a mean rotation error of 7.41°, corresponding to 85% and 59% reductions compared to open-loop control, together with high repeatability in repeated point-reaching tasks. To the best of our knowledge, this work presents the first fully markerless pose-estimation-driven position-based visual servoing framework for continuum manipulators, enabling precise closed-loop control without physical markers or embedded sensing.

Usefulness of LLMs as an Author Checklist Assistant for Scientific Papers: NeurIPS'24 Experiment

Large language models (LLMs) represent a promising, but controversial, tool in aiding scientific peer review. This study evaluates the usefulness of LLMs in a conference setting as a tool for vetting paper submissions against submission standards. We conduct an experiment at the 2024 Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) conference, where 234 papers were voluntarily submitted to an "LLM-based Checklist Assistant." This assistant validates whether papers adhere to the author checklist used by NeurIPS, which includes questions to ensure compliance with research and manuscript preparation standards. Evaluation of the assistant by NeurIPS paper authors suggests that the LLM-based assistant was generally helpful in verifying checklist completion. In post-usage surveys, over 70% of authors found the assistant useful, and 70% indicate that they would revise their papers or checklist responses based on its feedback. While causal attribution to the assistant is not definitive, qualitative evidence suggests that the LLM contributed to improving some submissions. Survey responses and analysis of re-submissions indicate that authors made substantive revisions to their submissions in response to specific feedback from the LLM. The experiment also highlights common issues with LLMs: inaccuracy (20/52) and excessive strictness (14/52) were the most frequent issues flagged by authors. We also conduct experiments to understand potential gaming of the system, which reveal that the assistant could be manipulated to enhance scores through fabricated justifications, highlighting potential vulnerabilities of automated review tools.

Synthesizing CTA Image Data for Type-B Aortic Dissection using Stable Diffusion Models

Stable Diffusion (SD) has gained a lot of attention in recent years in the field of Generative AI thus helping in synthesizing medical imaging data with distinct features. The aim is to contribute to the ongoing effort focused on overcoming the limitations of data scarcity and improving the capabilities of ML algorithms for cardiovascular image processing. Therefore, in this study, the possibility of generating synthetic cardiac CTA images was explored by fine-tuning stable diffusion models based on user defined text prompts, using only limited number of CTA images as input. A comprehensive evaluation of the synthetic data was conducted by incorporating both quantitative analysis and qualitative assessment, where a clinician assessed the quality of the generated data. It has been shown that Cardiac CTA images can be successfully generated using using Text to Image (T2I) stable diffusion model. The results demonstrate that the tuned T2I CTA diffusion model was able to generate images with features that are typically unique to acute type B aortic dissection (TBAD) medical conditions.

Depth Estimation using Weighted-loss and Transfer Learning

Depth estimation from 2D images is a common computer vision task that has applications in many fields including autonomous vehicles, scene understanding and robotics. The accuracy of a supervised depth estimation method mainly relies on the chosen loss function, the model architecture, quality of data and performance metrics. In this study, we propose a simplified and adaptable approach to improve depth estimation accuracy using transfer learning and an optimized loss function. The optimized loss function is a combination of weighted losses to which enhance robustness and generalization: Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Edge Loss and Structural Similarity Index (SSIM). We use a grid search and a random search method to find optimized weights for the losses, which leads to an improved model. We explore multiple encoder-decoder-based models including DenseNet121, DenseNet169, DenseNet201, and EfficientNet for the supervised depth estimation model on NYU Depth Dataset v2. We observe that the EfficientNet model, pre-trained on ImageNet for classification when used as an encoder, with a simple upsampling decoder, gives the best results in terms of RSME, REL and log10: 0.386, 0.113 and 0.049, respectively. We also perform a qualitative analysis which illustrates that our model produces depth maps that closely resemble ground truth, even in cases where the ground truth is flawed. The results indicate significant improvements in accuracy and robustness, with EfficientNet being the most successful architecture.

Beyond the Known: Adversarial Autoencoders in Novelty Detection

In novelty detection, the goal is to decide if a new data point should be categorized as an inlier or an outlier, given a training dataset that primarily captures the inlier distribution. Recent approaches typically use deep encoder and decoder network frameworks to derive a reconstruction error, and employ this error either to determine a novelty score, or as the basis for a one-class classifier. In this research, we use a similar framework but with a lightweight deep network, and we adopt a probabilistic score with reconstruction error. Our methodology calculates the probability of whether the sample comes from the inlier distribution or not. This work makes two key contributions. The first is that we compute the novelty probability by linearizing the manifold that holds the structure of the inlier distribution. This allows us to interpret how the probability is distributed and can be determined in relation to the local coordinates of the manifold tangent space. The second contribution is that we improve the training protocol for the network. Our results indicate that our approach is effective at learning the target class, and it outperforms recent state-of-the-art methods on several benchmark datasets.

3D CT-Based Coronary Calcium Assessment: A Feature-Driven Machine Learning Framework

Coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring plays a crucial role in the early detection and risk stratification of coronary artery disease (CAD). In this study, we focus on non-contrast coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) scans, which are commonly used for early calcification detection in clinical settings. To address the challenge of limited annotated data, we propose a radiomics-based pipeline that leverages pseudo-labeling to generate training labels, thereby eliminating the need for expert-defined segmentations. Additionally, we explore the use of pretrained foundation models, specifically CT-FM and RadImageNet, to extract image features, which are then used with traditional classifiers. We compare the performance of these deep learning features with that of radiomics features. Evaluation is conducted on a clinical CCTA dataset comprising 182 patients, where individuals are classified into two groups: zero versus non-zero calcium scores. We further investigate the impact of training on non-contrast datasets versus combined contrast and non-contrast datasets, with testing performed only on non contrast scans. Results show that radiomics-based models significantly outperform CNN-derived embeddings from foundation models (achieving 84% accuracy and p<0.05), despite the unavailability of expert annotations.

Bridging LLMs and Symbolic Reasoning in Educational QA Systems: Insights from the XAI Challenge at IJCNN 2025

The growing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into education has intensified the need for transparency and interpretability. While hackathons have long served as agile environments for rapid AI prototyping, few have directly addressed eXplainable AI (XAI) in real-world educational contexts. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the XAI Challenge 2025, a hackathon-style competition jointly organized by Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) and the International Workshop on Trustworthiness and Reliability in Neurosymbolic AI (TRNS-AI), held as part of the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN 2025). The challenge tasked participants with building Question-Answering (QA) systems capable of answering student queries about university policies while generating clear, logic-based natural language explanations. To promote transparency and trustworthiness, solutions were required to use lightweight Large Language Models (LLMs) or hybrid LLM-symbolic systems. A high-quality dataset was provided, constructed via logic-based templates with Z3 validation and refined through expert student review to ensure alignment with real-world academic scenarios. We describe the challenge's motivation, structure, dataset construction, and evaluation protocol. Situating the competition within the broader evolution of AI hackathons, we argue that it represents a novel effort to bridge LLMs and symbolic reasoning in service of explainability. Our findings offer actionable insights for future XAI-centered educational systems and competitive research initiatives.

3DPyranet Features Fusion for Spatio-temporal Feature Learning

Convolutional neural network (CNN) slides a kernel over the whole image to produce an output map. This kernel scheme reduces the number of parameters with respect to a fully connected neural network (NN). While CNN has proven to be an effective model in recognition of handwritten characters and traffic signal sign boards, etc. recently, its deep variants have proven to be effective in similar as well as more challenging applications like object, scene and action recognition. Deep CNN add more layers and kernels to the classical CNN, increasing the number of parameters, and partly reducing the main advantage of CNN which is less parameters. In this paper, a 3D pyramidal neural network called 3DPyraNet and a discriminative approach for spatio-temporal feature learning based on it, called 3DPyraNet-F, are proposed. 3DPyraNet introduces a new weighting scheme which learns features from both spatial and temporal dimensions analyzing multiple adjacent frames and keeping a biological plausible structure. It keeps the spatial topology of the input image and presents fewer parameters and lower computational and memory costs compared to both fully connected NNs and recent deep CNNs. 3DPyraNet-F extract the features maps of the highest layer of the learned network, fuse them in a single vector, and provide it as input in such a way to a linear-SVM classifier that enhances the recognition of human actions and dynamic scenes from the videos. Encouraging results are reported with 3DPyraNet in real-world environments, especially in the presence of camera induced motion. Further, 3DPyraNet-F clearly outperforms the state-of-the-art on three benchmark datasets and shows comparable result for the fourth.

Video-DPRP: A Differentially Private Approach for Visual Privacy-Preserving Video Human Activity Recognition

Considerable effort has been made in privacy-preserving video human activity recognition (HAR). Two primary approaches to ensure privacy preservation in Video HAR are differential privacy (DP) and visual privacy. Techniques enforcing DP during training provide strong theoretical privacy guarantees but offer limited capabilities for visual privacy assessment. Conversely methods, such as low-resolution transformations, data obfuscation and adversarial networks, emphasize visual privacy but lack clear theoretical privacy assurances. In this work, we focus on two main objectives: (1) leveraging DP properties to develop a model-free approach for visual privacy in videos and (2) evaluating our proposed technique using both differential privacy and visual privacy assessments on HAR tasks. To achieve goal (1), we introduce Video-DPRP: a Video-sample-wise Differentially Private Random Projection framework for privacy-preserved video reconstruction for HAR. By using random projections, noise matrices and right singular vectors derived from the singular value decomposition of videos, Video-DPRP reconstructs DP videos using privacy parameters ($ε,δ$) while enabling visual privacy assessment. For goal (2), using UCF101 and HMDB51 datasets, we compare Video-DPRP's performance on activity recognition with traditional DP methods, and state-of-the-art (SOTA) visual privacy-preserving techniques. Additionally, we assess its effectiveness in preserving privacy-related attributes such as facial features, gender, and skin color, using the PA-HMDB and VISPR datasets. Video-DPRP combines privacy-preservation from both a DP and visual privacy perspective unlike SOTA methods that typically address only one of these aspects.

RelevAI-Reviewer: A Benchmark on AI Reviewers for Survey Paper Relevance

Recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly the widespread adoption of Large Language Models (LLMs), have significantly enhanced text analysis capabilities. This technological evolution offers considerable promise for automating the review of scientific papers, a task traditionally managed through peer review by fellow researchers. Despite its critical role in maintaining research quality, the conventional peer-review process is often slow and subject to biases, potentially impeding the swift propagation of scientific knowledge. In this paper, we propose RelevAI-Reviewer, an automatic system that conceptualizes the task of survey paper review as a classification problem, aimed at assessing the relevance of a paper in relation to a specified prompt, analogous to a "call for papers". To address this, we introduce a novel dataset comprised of 25,164 instances. Each instance contains one prompt and four candidate papers, each varying in relevance to the prompt. The objective is to develop a machine learning (ML) model capable of determining the relevance of each paper and identifying the most pertinent one. We explore various baseline approaches, including traditional ML classifiers like Support Vector Machine (SVM) and advanced language models such as BERT. Preliminary findings indicate that the BERT-based end-to-end classifier surpasses other conventional ML methods in performance. We present this problem as a public challenge to foster engagement and interest in this area of research.

Survey on Reliable Deep Learning-Based Person Re-Identification Models: Are We There Yet?

Intelligent video-surveillance (IVS) is currently an active research field in computer vision and machine learning and provides useful tools for surveillance operators and forensic video investigators. Person re-identification (PReID) is one of the most critical problems in IVS, and it consists of recognizing whether or not an individual has already been observed over a camera in a network. Solutions to PReID have myriad applications including retrieval of video-sequences showing an individual of interest or even pedestrian tracking over multiple camera views. Different techniques have been proposed to increase the performance of PReID in the literature, and more recently researchers utilized deep neural networks (DNNs) given their compelling performance on similar vision problems and fast execution at test time. Given the importance and wide range of applications of re-identification solutions, our objective herein is to discuss the work carried out in the area and come up with a survey of state-of-the-art DNN models being used for this task. We present descriptions of each model along with their evaluation on a set of benchmark datasets. Finally, we show a detailed comparison among these models, which are followed by some discussions on their limitations that can work as guidelines for future research.

2018 Robotic Scene Segmentation Challenge

In 2015 we began a sub-challenge at the EndoVis workshop at MICCAI in Munich using endoscope images of ex-vivo tissue with automatically generated annotations from robot forward kinematics and instrument CAD models. However, the limited background variation and simple motion rendered the dataset uninformative in learning about which techniques would be suitable for segmentation in real surgery. In 2017, at the same workshop in Quebec we introduced the robotic instrument segmentation dataset with 10 teams participating in the challenge to perform binary, articulating parts and type segmentation of da Vinci instruments. This challenge included realistic instrument motion and more complex porcine tissue as background and was widely addressed with modifications on U-Nets and other popular CNN architectures. In 2018 we added to the complexity by introducing a set of anatomical objects and medical devices to the segmented classes. To avoid over-complicating the challenge, we continued with porcine data which is dramatically simpler than human tissue due to the lack of fatty tissue occluding many organs.

Graph Convolutional Networks: analysis, improvements and results

In the current era of neural networks and big data, higher dimensional data is processed for automation of different application areas. Graphs represent a complex data organization in which dependencies between more than one object or activity occur. Due to the high dimensionality, this data creates challenges for machine learning algorithms. Graph convolutional networks were introduced to utilize the convolutional models concepts that shows good results. In this context, we enhanced two of the existing Graph convolutional network models by proposing four enhancements. These changes includes: hyper parameters optimization, convex combination of activation functions, topological information enrichment through clustering coefficients measure, and structural redesign of the network through addition of dense layers. We present extensive results on four state-of-art benchmark datasets. The performance is notable not only in terms of lesser computational cost compared to competitors, but also achieved competitive results for three of the datasets and state-of-the-art for the fourth dataset.

Automatic Emotion Recognition (AER) System based on Two-Level Ensemble of Lightweight Deep CNN Models

Emotions play a crucial role in human interaction, health care and security investigations and monitoring. Automatic emotion recognition (AER) using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is an effective method for decoding the real emotions, which are independent of body gestures, but it is a challenging problem. Several automatic emotion recognition systems have been proposed, which are based on traditional hand-engineered approaches and their performances are very poor. Motivated by the outstanding performance of deep learning (DL) in many recognition tasks, we introduce an AER system (Deep-AER) based on EEG brain signals using DL. A DL model involves a large number of learnable parameters, and its training needs a large dataset of EEG signals, which is difficult to acquire for AER problem. To overcome this problem, we proposed a lightweight pyramidal one-dimensional convolutional neural network (LP-1D-CNN) model, which involves a small number of learnable parameters. Using LP-1D-CNN, we build a two level ensemble model. In the first level of the ensemble, each channel is scanned incrementally by LP-1D-CNN to generate predictions, which are fused using majority vote. The second level of the ensemble combines the predictions of all channels of an EEG signal using majority vote for detecting the emotion state. We validated the effectiveness and robustness of Deep-AER using DEAP, a benchmark dataset for emotion recognition research. The results indicate that FRONT plays dominant role in AER and over this region, Deep-AER achieved the accuracies of 98.43% and 97.65% for two AER problems, i.e., high valence vs low valence (HV vs LV) and high arousal vs low arousal (HA vs LA), respectively. The comparison reveals that Deep-AER outperforms the state-of-the-art systems with large margin. The Deep-AER system will be helpful in monitoring for health care and security investigations.

A Virtual Testbed for Critical Incident Investigation with Autonomous Remote Aerial Vehicle Surveying, Artificial Intelligence, and Decision Support

Autonomous robotics and artificial intelligence techniques can be used to support human personnel in the event of critical incidents. These incidents can pose great danger to human life. Some examples of such assistance include: multi-robot surveying of the scene; collection of sensor data and scene imagery, real-time risk assessment and analysis; object identification and anomaly detection; and retrieval of relevant supporting documentation such as standard operating procedures (SOPs). These incidents, although often rare, can involve chemical, biological, radiological/nuclear or explosive (CBRNE) substances and can be of high consequence. Real-world training and deployment of these systems can be costly and sometimes not feasible. For this reason, we have developed a realistic 3D model of a CBRNE scenario to act as a testbed for an initial set of assisting AI tools that we have developed.

Survey on Deep Learning Techniques for Person Re-Identification Task

Intelligent video-surveillance is currently an active research field in computer vision and machine learning techniques. It provides useful tools for surveillance operators and forensic video investigators. Person re-identification (PReID) is one among these tools. This tool can also be employed in various possible applications such as off-line retrieval of all the video-sequences showing an individual of interest whose image is given a query, and online pedestrian tracking over multiple camera views. To this aim, many techniques have been proposed to increase the performance of PReID. Among the systems, many researchers utilized deep neural networks (DNNs) because of their better performance and fast execution at test time. Our objective is to provide for future researchers the work being done on PReID to date. Therefore, we summarized state-of-the-art DNN models being used for this task. A brief description of each model along with their evaluation on a set of benchmark datasets is given. Finally, a detailed comparison is provided among these models followed by some limitations that can work as guidelines for future research.

A Virtual Environment with Multi-Robot Navigation, Analytics, and Decision Support for Critical Incident Investigation

Accidents and attacks that involve chemical, biological, radiological/nuclear or explosive (CBRNE) substances are rare, but can be of high consequence. Since the investigation of such events is not anybody's routine work, a range of AI techniques can reduce investigators' cognitive load and support decision-making, including: planning the assessment of the scene; ongoing evaluation and updating of risks; control of autonomous vehicles for collecting images and sensor data; reviewing images/videos for items of interest; identification of anomalies; and retrieval of relevant documentation. Because of the rare and high-risk nature of these events, realistic simulations can support the development and evaluation of AI-based tools. We have developed realistic models of CBRNE scenarios and implemented an initial set of tools.

An Automated System for Epilepsy Detection using EEG Brain Signals based on Deep Learning Approach

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder and for its detection, encephalography (EEG) is a commonly used clinical approach. Manual inspection of EEG brain signals is a time-consuming and laborious process, which puts heavy burden on neurologists and affects their performance. Several automatic techniques have been proposed using traditional approaches to assist neurologists in detecting binary epilepsy scenarios e.g. seizure vs. non-seizure or normal vs. ictal. These methods do not perform well when classifying ternary case e.g. ictal vs. normal vs. inter-ictal; the maximum accuracy for this case by the state-of-the-art-methods is 97+-1%. To overcome this problem, we propose a system based on deep learning, which is an ensemble of pyramidal one-dimensional convolutional neural network (P-1D-CNN) models. In a CNN model, the bottleneck is the large number of learnable parameters. P-1D-CNN works on the concept of refinement approach and it results in 60% fewer parameters compared to traditional CNN models. Further to overcome the limitations of small amount of data, we proposed augmentation schemes for learning P-1D-CNN model. In almost all the cases concerning epilepsy detection, the proposed system gives an accuracy of 99.1+-0.9% on the University of Bonn dataset.

About Pyramid Structure in Convolutional Neural Networks

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) brought revolution without any doubt to various challenging tasks, mainly in computer vision. However, their model designing still requires attention to reduce number of learnable parameters, with no meaningful reduction in performance. In this paper we investigate to what extend CNN may take advantage of pyramid structure typical of biological neurons. A generalized statement over convolutional layers from input till fully connected layer is introduced that helps further in understanding and designing a successful deep network. It reduces ambiguity, number of parameters, and their size on disk without degrading overall accuracy. Performance are shown on state-of-the-art models for MNIST, Cifar-10, Cifar-100, and ImageNet-12 datasets. Despite more than 80% reduction in parameters for Caffe_LENET, challenging results are obtained. Further, despite 10-20% reduction in training data along with 10-40% reduction in parameters for AlexNet model and its variations, competitive results are achieved when compared to similar well-engineered deeper architectures.

Decreasing defect rate of test cases by designing and analysis for recursive modules of a program structure: Improvement in test cases

Designing and analysis of test cases is a challenging tasks for tester roles especially those who are related to test the structure of program. Recently, Programmers are showing valuable trend towards the implementation of recursive modules in a program structure. In testing phase of software development life cycle, test cases help the tester to test the structure and flow of program. The implementation of well designed test cases for a program leads to reduce the defect rate and efforts needed for corrective maintenance. In this paper, author proposed a strategy to design and analyze the test cases for a program structure of recursive modules. This strategy will definitely leads to validation of program structure besides reducing the defect rate and corrective maintenance efforts.
