A Bayesian Framework for Active Tactile Object Recognition, Pose Estimation and Shape Transfer Learning

As humans can explore and understand the world through active touch, similar capability is desired for robots. In this paper, we address the problem of active tactile object recognition, pose estimation and shape transfer learning, where a customized particle filter (PF) and Gaussian process implicit surface (GPIS) is combined in a unified Bayesian framework. Upon new tactile input, the customized PF updates the joint distribution of the object class and object pose while tracking the novelty of the object. Once a novel object is identified, its shape will be reconstructed using GPIS. By grounding the prior of the GPIS with the maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) estimation from the PF, the knowledge about known shapes can be transferred to learn novel shapes. An exploration procedure based on global shape estimation is proposed to guide active data acquisition and terminate the exploration upon sufficient information. Through experiments in simulation, the proposed framework demonstrated its effectiveness and efficiency in estimating object class and pose for known objects and learning novel shapes. Furthermore, it can recognize previously learned shapes reliably.

Social Robots for People Living with Dementia: A Scoping Review on Deception from Design to Perception

As social robots are increasingly introduced into dementia care, their embodied and interactive design may blur the boundary between artificial and lifelike entities, raising ethical concerns about robotic deception. However, it remains unclear which specific design cues of social robots might lead to social robotic deception (SRD) in people living with dementia (PLwD), and which perceptions and responses of PLwD might indicate that SRD is taking place. To address these questions, we conducted a scoping review of 26 empirical studies reporting PLwD interacting with social robots. We identified three key design cue categories that might contribute to SRD and one that might break the illusion. However, the available literature does not provide sufficient evidence to determine which specific design cues lead to SRD. Thematic analysis of user responses reveals six recurring patterns in how PLwD perceive and respond to social robots. However, conceptual limitations in existing definitions of robotic deception make it difficult to identify when and to what extent deception actually occurs. Building on the results, we propose a dual-process interpretation that clarifies the cognitive basis of false beliefs in human-robot interaction and distinguishes SRD from anthropomorphism or emotional engagement.

The Role of Generative AI in Facilitating Social Interactions: A Scoping Review

Reduced social connectedness increasingly poses a threat to mental health, life expectancy, and general well-being. Generative AI (GAI) technologies, such as large language models (LLMs) and image generation tools, are increasingly integrated into applications aimed at enhancing human social experiences. Despite their growing presence, little is known about how these technologies influence social interactions. This scoping review investigates how GAI-based applications are currently designed to facilitate social interaction, what forms of social engagement they target, and which design and evaluation methodologies designers use to create and evaluate them. Through an analysis of 30 studies published since 2020, we identify key trends in application domains including storytelling, socio-emotional skills training, reminiscence, collaborative learning, music making, and general conversation. We highlight the role of participatory and co-design approaches in fostering both effective technology use and social engagement, while also examining socio-ethical concerns such as cultural bias and accessibility. This review underscores the potential of GAI to support dynamic and personalized interactions, but calls for greater attention to equitable design practices and inclusive evaluation strategies.

Theory-based Habit Modeling for Enhancing Behavior Prediction

Psychological theories of habit posit that when a strong habit is formed through behavioral repetition, it can trigger behavior automatically in the same environment. Given the reciprocal relationship between habit and behavior, changing lifestyle behaviors (e.g., toothbrushing) is largely a task of breaking old habits and creating new and healthy ones. Thus, representing users' habit strengths can be very useful for behavior change support systems (BCSS), for example, to predict behavior or to decide when an intervention reaches its intended effect. However, habit strength is not directly observable and existing self-report measures are taxing for users. In this paper, built on recent computational models of habit formation, we propose a method to enable intelligent systems to compute habit strength based on observable behavior. The hypothesized advantage of using computed habit strength for behavior prediction was tested using data from two intervention studies, where we trained participants to brush their teeth twice a day for three weeks and monitored their behaviors using accelerometers. Through hierarchical cross-validation, we found that for the task of predicting future brushing behavior, computed habit strength clearly outperformed self-reported habit strength (in both studies) and was also superior to models based on past behavior frequency (in the larger second study). Our findings provide initial support for our theory-based approach of modeling user habits and encourages the use of habit computation to deliver personalized and adaptive interventions.
