NUAA-QMUL-AIIT at Memotion 3: Multi-modal Fusion with Squeeze-and-Excitation for Internet Meme Emotion AnalysisXiaoyu Guo, Jing Ma, Arkaitz Zubiaga
This paper describes the participation of our NUAA-QMUL-AIIT team in the Memotion 3 shared task on meme emotion analysis. We propose a novel multi-modal fusion method, Squeeze-and-Excitation Fusion (SEFusion), and embed it into our system for emotion classification in memes. SEFusion is a simple fusion method that employs fully connected layers, reshaping, and matrix multiplication. SEFusion learns a weight for each modality and then applies it to its own modality feature. We evaluate the performance of our system on the three Memotion 3 sub-tasks. Among all participating systems in this Memotion 3 shared task, our system ranked first on task A, fifth on task B, and second on task C. Camouflaged Object Tracking: A BenchmarkXiaoyu Guo, Pengzhi Zhong, Hao Zhang et al.
Visual tracking has seen remarkable advancements, largely driven by the availability of large-scale training datasets that have enabled the development of highly accurate and robust algorithms. While significant progress has been made in tracking general objects, research on more challenging scenarios, such as tracking camouflaged objects, remains limited. Camouflaged objects, which blend seamlessly with their surroundings or other objects, present unique challenges for detection and tracking in complex environments. This challenge is particularly critical in applications such as military, security, agriculture, and marine monitoring, where precise tracking of camouflaged objects is essential. To address this gap, we introduce the Camouflaged Object Tracking Dataset (COTD), a specialized benchmark designed specifically for evaluating camouflaged object tracking methods. The COTD dataset comprises 200 sequences and approximately 80,000 frames, each annotated with detailed bounding boxes. Our evaluation of 20 existing tracking algorithms reveals significant deficiencies in their performance with camouflaged objects. To address these issues, we propose a novel tracking framework, HiPTrack-MLS, which demonstrates promising results in improving tracking performance for camouflaged objects. Cluster-based Deep Ensemble Learning for Emotion Classification in Internet MemesXiaoyu Guo, Jing Ma, Arkaitz Zubiaga
Memes have gained popularity as a means to share visual ideas through the Internet and social media by mixing text, images and videos, often for humorous purposes. Research enabling automated analysis of memes has gained attention in recent years, including among others the task of classifying the emotion expressed in memes. In this paper, we propose a novel model, cluster-based deep ensemble learning (CDEL), for emotion classification in memes. CDEL is a hybrid model that leverages the benefits of a deep learning model in combination with a clustering algorithm, which enhances the model with additional information after clustering memes with similar facial features. We evaluate the performance of CDEL on a benchmark dataset for emotion classification, proving its effectiveness by outperforming a wide range of baseline models and achieving state-of-the-art performance. Further evaluation through ablated models demonstrates the effectiveness of the different components of CDEL.

Low-Light Object Tracking: A BenchmarkPengzhi Zhong, Xiaoyu Guo, Defeng Huang et al.
In recent years, the field of visual tracking has made significant progress with the application of large-scale training datasets. These datasets have supported the development of sophisticated algorithms, enhancing the accuracy and stability of visual object tracking. However, most research has primarily focused on favorable illumination circumstances, neglecting the challenges of tracking in low-ligh environments. In low-light scenes, lighting may change dramatically, targets may lack distinct texture features, and in some scenarios, targets may not be directly observable. These factors can lead to a severe decline in tracking performance. To address this issue, we introduce LLOT, a benchmark specifically designed for Low-Light Object Tracking. LLOT comprises 269 challenging sequences with a total of over 132K frames, each carefully annotated with bounding boxes. This specially designed dataset aims to promote innovation and advancement in object tracking techniques for low-light conditions, addressing challenges not adequately covered by existing benchmarks. To assess the performance of existing methods on LLOT, we conducted extensive tests on 39 state-of-the-art tracking algorithms. The results highlight a considerable gap in low-light tracking performance. In response, we propose H-DCPT, a novel tracker that incorporates historical and darkness clue prompts to set a stronger baseline. H-DCPT outperformed all 39 evaluated methods in our experiments, demonstrating significant improvements. We hope that our benchmark and H-DCPT will stimulate the development of novel and accurate methods for tracking objects in low-light conditions. Tracking Reflected Objects: A BenchmarkXiaoyu Guo, Pengzhi Zhong, Lizhi Lin et al.
Visual tracking has advanced significantly in recent years, mainly due to the availability of large-scale training datasets. These datasets have enabled the development of numerous algorithms that can track objects with high accuracy and robustness.However, the majority of current research has been directed towards tracking generic objects, with less emphasis on more specialized and challenging scenarios. One such challenging scenario involves tracking reflected objects. Reflections can significantly distort the appearance of objects, creating ambiguous visual cues that complicate the tracking process. This issue is particularly pertinent in applications such as autonomous driving, security, smart homes, and industrial production, where accurately tracking objects reflected in surfaces like mirrors or glass is crucial. To address this gap, we introduce TRO, a benchmark specifically for Tracking Reflected Objects. TRO includes 200 sequences with around 70,000 frames, each carefully annotated with bounding boxes. This dataset aims to encourage the development of new, accurate methods for tracking reflected objects, which present unique challenges not sufficiently covered by existing benchmarks. We evaluated 20 state-of-the-art trackers and found that they struggle with the complexities of reflections. To provide a stronger baseline, we propose a new tracker, HiP-HaTrack, which uses hierarchical features to improve performance, significantly outperforming existing algorithms. We believe our benchmark, evaluation, and HiP-HaTrack will inspire further research and applications in tracking reflected objects. JailBreakV: A Benchmark for Assessing the Robustness of MultiModal Large Language Models against Jailbreak AttacksWeidi Luo, Siyuan Ma, Xiaogeng Liu et al.
With the rapid advancements in Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), securing these models against malicious inputs while aligning them with human values has emerged as a critical challenge. In this paper, we investigate an important and unexplored question of whether techniques that successfully jailbreak Large Language Models (LLMs) can be equally effective in jailbreaking MLLMs. To explore this issue, we introduce JailBreakV-28K, a pioneering benchmark designed to assess the transferability of LLM jailbreak techniques to MLLMs, thereby evaluating the robustness of MLLMs against diverse jailbreak attacks. Utilizing a dataset of 2, 000 malicious queries that is also proposed in this paper, we generate 20, 000 text-based jailbreak prompts using advanced jailbreak attacks on LLMs, alongside 8, 000 image-based jailbreak inputs from recent MLLMs jailbreak attacks, our comprehensive dataset includes 28, 000 test cases across a spectrum of adversarial scenarios. Our evaluation of 10 open-source MLLMs reveals a notably high Attack Success Rate (ASR) for attacks transferred from LLMs, highlighting a critical vulnerability in MLLMs that stems from their text-processing capabilities. Our findings underscore the urgent need for future research to address alignment vulnerabilities in MLLMs from both textual and visual inputs.

Neuromorphic spatiotemporal optical flow: Enabling ultrafast visual perception beyond human capabilitiesShengbo Wang, Jingwen Zhao, Tongming Pu et al.
Optical flow, inspired by the mechanisms of biological visual systems, calculates spatial motion vectors within visual scenes that are necessary for enabling robotics to excel in complex and dynamic working environments. However, current optical flow algorithms, despite human-competitive task performance on benchmark datasets, remain constrained by unacceptable time delays (~0.6 seconds per inference, 4X human processing speed) in practical deployment. Here, we introduce a neuromorphic optical flow approach that addresses delay bottlenecks by encoding temporal information directly in a synaptic transistor array to assist spatial motion analysis. Compared to conventional spatial-only optical flow methods, our spatiotemporal neuromorphic optical flow offers the spatial-temporal consistency of motion information, rapidly identifying regions of interest in as little as 1-2 ms using the temporal motion cues derived from the embedded temporal information in the two-dimensional floating gate synaptic transistors. Thus, the visual input can be selectively filtered to achieve faster velocity calculations and various task execution. At the hardware level, due to the atomically sharp interfaces between distinct functional layers in two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures, the synaptic transistor offers high-frequency response (~100 μs), robust non-volatility (>10000 s), and excellent endurance (>8000 cycles), enabling robust visual processing. In software benchmarks, our system outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms with a 400% speedup, frequently surpassing human-level performance while maintaining or enhancing accuracy by utilizing the temporal priors provided by the embedded temporal information.

From Static Risk to Dynamic Trajectories: Toward World-Model-Inspired Clinical PredictionPujun Feng, Xiaoyu Guo, Seyed Ehsan Saffari et al.
Clinical decision-making is a feedback system where risk estimates influence treatment, which in turn changes disease trajectories, and both shape clinicians' measurement practices. Static prediction often fails clinically: models trained on observational care logs conflate disease biology with clinician behavior, particularly under treatment confounder feedback and irregular or informative observation. This Review focuses on intervention-aware disease trajectory modeling in clinical AI--methods estimating patient-specific longitudinal disease evolution and assessing trajectory changes under alternative treatments. We organize the field around six linked components: three decision tasks (factual forecasting, counterfactual estimation, policy evaluation) and three data-generating mechanisms (disease evolution, treatment assignment, observation process) that determine identifiability. We present the first unified framework bridging forecasting, counterfactual trajectories, and policy evaluation across discrete/continuous time, explicitly addressing treatment assignment, time-varying confounding, and observation bias. We synthesize key method families (multistate/joint models, temporal point-process, deep sequence architectures, longitudinal causal inference), map them to relevant components, and align evaluation with claim strength via overlap diagnostics, uncertainty quantification, off-policy robustness, and target-trial validation. This synthesis advances benchmark prediction to decision-grade clinical evidence, enabling treatment-sensitive individualized futures, pre-deployment policy stress-testing, and safer closed-loop learning health systems that adapt/abstain when evidence is insufficient.

A1: A Fully Transparent Open-Source, Adaptive and Efficient Truncated Vision-Language-Action ModelKaidong Zhang, Jian Zhang, Rongtao Xu et al.
Vision--Language--Action (VLA) models have emerged as a powerful paradigm for open-world robot manipulation, but their practical deployment is often constrained by \emph{cost}: billion-scale VLM backbones and iterative diffusion/flow-based action heads incur high latency and compute, making real-time control expensive on commodity hardware. We present A1, a fully open-source and transparent VLA framework designed for low-cost, high-throughput inference without sacrificing manipulation success; Our approach leverages pretrained VLMs that provide implicit affordance priors for action generation. We release the full training stack (training code, data/data-processing pipeline, intermediate checkpoints, and evaluation scripts) to enable end-to-end reproducibility. Beyond optimizing the VLM alone, A1 targets the full inference pipeline by introducing a budget-aware adaptive inference scheme that jointly accelerates the backbone and the \emph{action head}. Specifically, we monitor action consistency across intermediate VLM layers to trigger early termination, and propose Inter-Layer Truncated Flow Matching that warm-starts denoising across layers, enabling accurate actions with substantially fewer effective denoising iterations. Across simulation benchmarks (LIBERO, VLABench) and real robots (Franka, AgiBot), A1 achieves state-of-the-art success rates while significantly reducing inference cost (e.g., up to 72% lower per-episode latency for flow-matching inference and up to 76.6% backbone computation reduction with minor performance degradation). On RoboChallenge, A1 achieves an average success rate of 29.00%, outperforming baselines including pi0(28.33%), X-VLA (21.33%), and RDT-1B (15.00%).

ReFocus: Reinforcing Mid-Frequency and Key-Frequency Modeling for Multivariate Time Series ForecastingGuoqi Yu, Yaoming Li, Juncheng Wang et al.
Recent advancements have progressively incorporated frequency-based techniques into deep learning models, leading to notable improvements in accuracy and efficiency for time series analysis tasks. However, the Mid-Frequency Spectrum Gap in the real-world time series, where the energy is concentrated at the low-frequency region while the middle-frequency band is negligible, hinders the ability of existing deep learning models to extract the crucial frequency information. Additionally, the shared Key-Frequency in multivariate time series, where different time series share indistinguishable frequency patterns, is rarely exploited by existing literature. This work introduces a novel module, Adaptive Mid-Frequency Energy Optimizer, based on convolution and residual learning, to emphasize the significance of mid-frequency bands. We also propose an Energy-based Key-Frequency Picking Block to capture shared Key-Frequency, which achieves superior inter-series modeling performance with fewer parameters. A novel Key-Frequency Enhanced Training strategy is employed to further enhance Key-Frequency modeling, where spectral information from other channels is randomly introduced into each channel. Our approach advanced multivariate time series forecasting on the challenging Traffic, ECL, and Solar benchmarks, reducing MSE by 4%, 6%, and 5% compared to the previous SOTA iTransformer. LiNo: Advancing Recursive Residual Decomposition of Linear and Nonlinear Patterns for Robust Time Series ForecastingGuoqi Yu, Yaoming Li, Xiaoyu Guo et al.
Forecasting models are pivotal in a data-driven world with vast volumes of time series data that appear as a compound of vast Linear and Nonlinear patterns. Recent deep time series forecasting models struggle to utilize seasonal and trend decomposition to separate the entangled components. Such a strategy only explicitly extracts simple linear patterns like trends, leaving the other linear modes and vast unexplored nonlinear patterns to the residual. Their flawed linear and nonlinear feature extraction models and shallow-level decomposition limit their adaptation to the diverse patterns present in real-world scenarios. Given this, we innovate Recursive Residual Decomposition by introducing explicit extraction of both linear and nonlinear patterns. This deeper-level decomposition framework, which is named LiNo, captures linear patterns using a Li block which can be a moving average kernel, and models nonlinear patterns using a No block which can be a Transformer encoder. The extraction of these two patterns is performed alternatively and recursively. To achieve the full potential of LiNo, we develop the current simple linear pattern extractor to a general learnable autoregressive model, and design a novel No block that can handle all essential nonlinear patterns. Remarkably, the proposed LiNo achieves state-of-the-art on thirteen real-world benchmarks under univariate and multivariate forecasting scenarios. Experiments show that current forecasting models can deliver more robust and precise results through this advanced Recursive Residual Decomposition. RePO-VLA: Recovery-Driven Policy Optimization for Vision-Language-Action ModelsWeijia Liufu, Xiaoyu Guo, Ruiyi Chen et al.
Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models remain brittle in long-horizon, contact-rich manipulation because success-only imitation provides little supervision for execution drift, while failed rollouts are often discarded. We introduce RePO-VLA, a recovery-driven policy optimization framework that assigns distinct roles to success, recovery, and failure trajectories. RePO-VLA first applies Recovery-Aware Initialization (RAI), slicing recovery segments and resetting history so corrective actions depend on the current adverse state rather than the preceding failure. It then learns a Progress-Aware Semantic Value Function (PAS-VF), aligning spatiotemporal trajectory features with instructions and successful references. The resulting labels salvage useful failure prefixes via reliability decay, while low-value labels mark drift and terminal breakdowns, teaching differences among nominal, failed, and corrective actions. The data engine turns adverse states into planner-generated or human-collected corrective rollouts, teaching recovery to the success manifold. Value-Conditioned Refinement (VCR) trains the policy to prefer high-progress actions. At deployment, a fixed high value ($v=1.0$) biases actions toward the learned success manifold without online failure detectors or heuristic retries. We introduce FRBench, with standardized error injection and recovery-focused evaluation. Across simulated and real-world bimanual tasks, RePO-VLA improves robustness, raising adversarial success from 20% to 75% on average and up to 80% in scaled real-world trials.

Bio-plausible Neuromorphic Disturbance Observer Based on Emulation Theory: Extended VersionHongfu Xu, Xiaoyu Guo, Shengbo Wang et al.
Biological neural systems achieve remarkable robustness and adaptability in uncertain environments through sparse, event-driven spike-based information processing and adaptive regulation. Inspired by this paradigm, this paper develops a neuromorhpic disturbance observer (NDO) and control framework that replaces conventional continuous-time signal representations with spike-timing encoding. Both disturbance estimates and control inputs are constructed via integrate-and-fire (IF) neuron dynamics from discrete spike events, yielding intrinsically event-driven updates. An adaptive-threshold triggering mechanism is inspired by spike-frequency adaptation (SFA), enabling history-dependent regulation of spike generation. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves neurally inspired robustness and adaptability, while the adaptive-threshold spiking scheme reduces spike events to 42.6% of the fixed-threshold case under noisy conditions.

Active visual perception refers to the ability of a system to dynamically engage with its environment through sensing and action, allowing it to modify its behavior in response to specific goals or uncertainties. Unlike passive systems that rely solely on visual data, active visual perception systems can direct attention, move sensors, or interact with objects to acquire more informative data. This approach is particularly powerful in complex environments where static sensing methods may not provide sufficient information. Active visual perception plays a critical role in numerous applications, including robotics, autonomous vehicles, human-computer interaction, and surveillance systems. However, despite its significant promise, there are several challenges that need to be addressed, including real-time processing of complex visual data, decision-making in dynamic environments, and integrating multimodal sensory inputs. This paper explores both the opportunities and challenges inherent in active visual perception, providing a comprehensive overview of its potential, current research, and the obstacles that must be overcome for broader adoption.

LCGC: Learning from Consistency Gradient Conflicting for Class-Imbalanced Semi-Supervised DebiasingWeiwei Xing, Yue Cheng, Hongzhu Yi et al.
Classifiers often learn to be biased corresponding to the class-imbalanced dataset, especially under the semi-supervised learning (SSL) set. While previous work tries to appropriately re-balance the classifiers by subtracting a class-irrelevant image's logit, but lacks a firm theoretical basis. We theoretically analyze why exploiting a baseline image can refine pseudo-labels and prove that the black image is the best choice. We also indicated that as the training process deepens, the pseudo-labels before and after refinement become closer. Based on this observation, we propose a debiasing scheme dubbed LCGC, which Learning from Consistency Gradient Conflicting, by encouraging biased class predictions during training. We intentionally update the pseudo-labels whose gradient conflicts with the debiased logits, representing the optimization direction offered by the over-imbalanced classifier predictions. Then, we debiased the predictions by subtracting the baseline image logits during testing. Extensive experiments demonstrate that LCGC can significantly improve the prediction accuracy of existing CISSL models on public benchmarks.

Image-to-Force Estimation for Soft Tissue Interaction in Robotic-Assisted Surgery Using Structured LightJiayin Wang, Mingfeng Yao, Yanran Wei et al.
For Minimally Invasive Surgical (MIS) robots, accurate haptic interaction force feedback is essential for ensuring the safety of interacting with soft tissue. However, most existing MIS robotic systems cannot facilitate direct measurement of the interaction force with hardware sensors due to space limitations. This letter introduces an effective vision-based scheme that utilizes a One-Shot structured light projection with a designed pattern on soft tissue coupled with haptic information processing through a trained image-to-force neural network. The images captured from the endoscopic stereo camera are analyzed to reconstruct high-resolution 3D point clouds for soft tissue deformation. Based on this, a modified PointNet-based force estimation method is proposed, which excels in representing the complex mechanical properties of soft tissue. Numerical force interaction experiments are conducted on three silicon materials with different stiffness. The results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

LOCAL: Learning with Orientation Matrix to Infer Causal Structure from Time Series DataJiajun Zhang, Boyang Qiang, Xiaoyu Guo et al.
Discovering the underlying Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) from time series observational data is highly challenging due to the dynamic nature and complex nonlinear interactions between variables. Existing methods typically search for the optimal DAG by optimizing an objective function but face scalability challenges, as their computational demands grow exponentially with the dimensional expansion of variables. To this end, we propose LOCAL, a highly efficient, easy-to-implement, and constraint-free method for recovering dynamic causal structures. LOCAL is the first attempt to formulate a quasi-maximum likelihood-based score function for learning the dynamic DAG equivalent to the ground truth. Building on this, we introduce two adaptive modules that enhance the algebraic characterization of acyclicity: Asymptotic Causal Mask Learning (ACML) and Dynamic Graph Parameter Learning (DGPL). ACML constructs causal masks using learnable priority vectors and the Gumbel-Sigmoid function, ensuring DAG formation while optimizing computational efficiency. DGPL transforms causal learning into decomposed matrix products, capturing dynamic causal structure in high-dimensional data and improving interpretability. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that LOCAL significantly outperforms existing methods and highlight LOCAL's potential as a robust and efficient method for dynamic causal discovery.

Deep Learning Applications Based on WISE Infrared Data: Classification of Stars, Galaxies and QuasarsGuiyu Zhao, Bo Qiu, A-Li Luo et al.
The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) has detected hundreds of millions of sources over the entire sky. However, classifying them reliably is a great challenge due to degeneracies in WISE multicolor space and low detection levels in its two longest-wavelength bandpasses. In this paper, the deep learning classification network, IICnet (Infrared Image Classification network), is designed to classify sources from WISE images to achieve a more accurate classification goal. IICnet shows good ability on the feature extraction of the WISE sources. Experiments demonstrates that the classification results of IICnet are superior to some other methods; it has obtained 96.2% accuracy for galaxies, 97.9% accuracy for quasars, and 96.4% accuracy for stars, and the Area Under Curve (AUC) of the IICnet classifier can reach more than 99%. In addition, the superiority of IICnet in processing infrared images has been demonstrated in the comparisons with VGG16, GoogleNet, ResNet34, MobileNet, EfficientNetV2, and RepVGG-fewer parameters and faster inference. The above proves that IICnet is an effective method to classify infrared sources.

Prompt What You Need: Enhancing Segmentation in Rainy Scenes with Anchor-based PromptingXiaoyu Guo, Xiang Wei, Qi Su et al.
Semantic segmentation in rainy scenes is a challenging task due to the complex environment, class distribution imbalance, and limited annotated data. To address these challenges, we propose a novel framework that utilizes semi-supervised learning and pre-trained segmentation foundation model to achieve superior performance. Specifically, our framework leverages the semi-supervised model as the basis for generating raw semantic segmentation results, while also serving as a guiding force to prompt pre-trained foundation model to compensate for knowledge gaps with entropy-based anchors. In addition, to minimize the impact of irrelevant segmentation masks generated by the pre-trained foundation model, we also propose a mask filtering and fusion mechanism that optimizes raw semantic segmentation results based on the principle of minimum risk. The proposed framework achieves superior segmentation performance on the Rainy WCity dataset and is awarded the first prize in the sub-track of STRAIN in ICME 2023 Grand Challenges.

NUAA-QMUL at SemEval-2020 Task 8: Utilizing BERT and DenseNet for Internet Meme Emotion AnalysisXiaoyu Guo, Jing Ma, Arkaitz Zubiaga
This paper describes our contribution to SemEval 2020 Task 8: Memotion Analysis. Our system learns multi-modal embeddings from text and images in order to classify Internet memes by sentiment. Our model learns text embeddings using BERT and extracts features from images with DenseNet, subsequently combining both features through concatenation. We also compare our results with those produced by DenseNet, ResNet, BERT, and BERT-ResNet. Our results show that image classification models have the potential to help classifying memes, with DenseNet outperforming ResNet. Adding text features is however not always helpful for Memotion Analysis.

The former is a unique genre and has strict constraints, while the latter is very flexible in length, optional to have rhymes, and similar to modern poetry in other languages. Thus, it requires more to control the coherence and improve the novelty. In this paper, we propose a generate-retrieve-then-refine paradigm to jointly improve the coherence and novelty. In the first stage, a draft is generated given keywords (i.e., topics) only. The second stage produces a "refining vector" from retrieval lines. At last, we take into consideration both the draft and the "refining vector" to generate a new poem. The draft provides future sentence-level information for a line to be generated. Meanwhile, the "refining vector" points out the direction of refinement based on impressive words detection mechanism which can learn good patterns from references and then create new ones via insertion operation. Experimental results on a collected large-scale modern Chinese poetry dataset show that our proposed approach can not only generate more coherent poems, but also improve the diversity and novelty.

From Knowledge Map to Mind Map: Artificial ImaginationRuixue Liu, Baoyang Chen, Xiaoyu Guo et al.
Imagination is one of the most important factors which makes an artistic painting unique and impressive. With the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence, more and more researchers try to create painting with AI technology automatically. However, lacking of imagination is still a main problem for AI painting. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to inject rich imagination into a special painting art Mind Map creation. We firstly consider lexical and phonological similarities of seed word, then learn and inherit original painting style of the author, and finally apply Dadaism and impossibility of improvisation principles into painting process. We also design several metrics for imagination evaluation. Experimental results show that our proposed method can increase imagination of painting and also improve its overall quality.
