Enhancing and Accelerating Large Language Models via Instruction-Aware Contextual Compression

Haowen Hou, Fei Ma, Binwen Bai et al.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have garnered widespread attention due to their remarkable performance across various tasks. However, to mitigate the issue of hallucinations, LLMs often incorporate retrieval-augmented pipeline to provide them with rich external knowledge and context. Nevertheless, challenges stem from inaccurate and coarse-grained context retrieved from the retriever. Supplying irrelevant context to the LLMs can result in poorer responses, increased inference latency, and higher costs. This paper introduces a method called Instruction-Aware Contextual Compression, which filters out less informative content, thereby accelerating and enhancing the use of LLMs. The experimental results demonstrate that Instruction-Aware Contextual Compression notably reduces memory consumption and minimizes generation latency while maintaining performance levels comparable to those achieved with the use of the full context. Specifically, we achieved a 50% reduction in context-related costs, resulting in a 5% reduction in inference memory usage and a 2.2-fold increase in inference speed, with only a minor drop of 0.047 in Rouge-1. These findings suggest that our method strikes an effective balance between efficiency and performance.

Maximum Likelihood Estimation for Multimodal Learning with Missing Modality

Fei Ma, Xiangxiang Xu, Shao-Lun Huang et al.

Multimodal learning has achieved great successes in many scenarios. Compared with unimodal learning, it can effectively combine the information from different modalities to improve the performance of learning tasks. In reality, the multimodal data may have missing modalities due to various reasons, such as sensor failure and data transmission error. In previous works, the information of the modality-missing data has not been well exploited. To address this problem, we propose an efficient approach based on maximum likelihood estimation to incorporate the knowledge in the modality-missing data. Specifically, we design a likelihood function to characterize the conditional distribution of the modality-complete data and the modality-missing data, which is theoretically optimal. Moreover, we develop a generalized form of the softmax function to effectively implement maximum likelihood estimation in an end-to-end manner. Such training strategy guarantees the computability of our algorithm capably. Finally, we conduct a series of experiments on real-world multimodal datasets. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, even when 95% of the training data has missing modality.

Integrating global spatial features in CNN based Hyperspectral/SAR imagery classification

Fan Zhang, MinChao Yan, Chen Hu et al.

The land cover classification has played an important role in remote sensing because it can intelligently identify things in one huge remote sensing image to reduce the work of humans. However, a lot of classification methods are designed based on the pixel feature or limited spatial feature of the remote sensing image, which limits the classification accuracy and universality of their methods. This paper proposed a novel method to take into the information of remote sensing image, i.e., geographic latitude-longitude information. In addition, a dual-branch convolutional neural network (CNN) classification method is designed in combination with the global information to mine the pixel features of the image. Then, the features of the two neural networks are fused with another fully neural network to realize the classification of remote sensing images. Finally, two remote sensing images are used to verify the effectiveness of our method, including hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) imagery. The result of the proposed method is superior to the traditional single-channel convolutional neural network.
