GM-NeRF: Learning Generalizable Model-based Neural Radiance Fields from Multi-view ImagesJianchuan Chen, Wentao Yi, Liqian Ma et al.
In this work, we focus on synthesizing high-fidelity novel view images for arbitrary human performers, given a set of sparse multi-view images. It is a challenging task due to the large variation among articulated body poses and heavy self-occlusions. To alleviate this, we introduce an effective generalizable framework Generalizable Model-based Neural Radiance Fields (GM-NeRF) to synthesize free-viewpoint images. Specifically, we propose a geometry-guided attention mechanism to register the appearance code from multi-view 2D images to a geometry proxy which can alleviate the misalignment between inaccurate geometry prior and pixel space. On top of that, we further conduct neural rendering and partial gradient backpropagation for efficient perceptual supervision and improvement of the perceptual quality of synthesis. To evaluate our method, we conduct experiments on synthesized datasets THuman2.0 and Multi-garment, and real-world datasets Genebody and ZJUMocap. The results demonstrate that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of novel view synthesis and geometric reconstruction.

Controllable Radiance Fields for Dynamic Face SynthesisPeiye Zhuang, Liqian Ma, Oluwasanmi Koyejo et al.
Recent work on 3D-aware image synthesis has achieved compelling results using advances in neural rendering. However, 3D-aware synthesis of face dynamics hasn't received much attention. Here, we study how to explicitly control generative model synthesis of face dynamics exhibiting non-rigid motion (e.g., facial expression change), while simultaneously ensuring 3D-awareness. For this we propose a Controllable Radiance Field (CoRF): 1) Motion control is achieved by embedding motion features within the layered latent motion space of a style-based generator; 2) To ensure consistency of background, motion features and subject-specific attributes such as lighting, texture, shapes, albedo, and identity, a face parsing net, a head regressor and an identity encoder are incorporated. On head image/video data we show that CoRFs are 3D-aware while enabling editing of identity, viewing directions, and motion.

Direct Dense Pose EstimationLiqian Ma, Lingjie Liu, Christian Theobalt et al.
Dense human pose estimation is the problem of learning dense correspondences between RGB images and the surfaces of human bodies, which finds various applications, such as human body reconstruction, human pose transfer, and human action recognition. Prior dense pose estimation methods are all based on Mask R-CNN framework and operate in a top-down manner of first attempting to identify a bounding box for each person and matching dense correspondences in each bounding box. Consequently, these methods lack robustness due to their critical dependence on the Mask R-CNN detection, and the runtime increases drastically as the number of persons in the image increases. We therefore propose a novel alternative method for solving the dense pose estimation problem, called Direct Dense Pose (DDP). DDP first predicts the instance mask and global IUV representation separately and then combines them together. We also propose a simple yet effective 2D temporal-smoothing scheme to alleviate the temporal jitters when dealing with video data. Experiments demonstrate that DDP overcomes the limitations of previous top-down baseline methods and achieves competitive accuracy. In addition, DDP is computationally more efficient than previous dense pose estimation methods, and it reduces jitters when applied to a video sequence, which is a problem plaguing the previous methods.

UNIF: United Neural Implicit Functions for Clothed Human Reconstruction and AnimationShenhan Qian, Jiale Xu, Ziwei Liu et al.
We propose united implicit functions (UNIF), a part-based method for clothed human reconstruction and animation with raw scans and skeletons as the input. Previous part-based methods for human reconstruction rely on ground-truth part labels from SMPL and thus are limited to minimal-clothed humans. In contrast, our method learns to separate parts from body motions instead of part supervision, thus can be extended to clothed humans and other articulated objects. Our Partition-from-Motion is achieved by a bone-centered initialization, a bone limit loss, and a section normal loss that ensure stable part division even when the training poses are limited. We also present a minimal perimeter loss for SDF to suppress extra surfaces and part overlapping. Another core of our method is an adjacent part seaming algorithm that produces non-rigid deformations to maintain the connection between parts which significantly relieves the part-based artifacts. Under this algorithm, we further propose "Competing Parts", a method that defines blending weights by the relative position of a point to bones instead of the absolute position, avoiding the generalization problem of neural implicit functions with inverse LBS (linear blend skinning). We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by clothed human body reconstruction and animation on the CAPE and the ClothSeq datasets.

Pixel2ISDF: Implicit Signed Distance Fields based Human Body Model from Multi-view and Multi-pose ImagesJianchuan Chen, Wentao Yi, Tiantian Wang et al.
In this report, we focus on reconstructing clothed humans in the canonical space given multiple views and poses of a human as the input. To achieve this, we utilize the geometric prior of the SMPLX model in the canonical space to learn the implicit representation for geometry reconstruction. Based on the observation that the topology between the posed mesh and the mesh in the canonical space are consistent, we propose to learn latent codes on the posed mesh by leveraging multiple input images and then assign the latent codes to the mesh in the canonical space. Specifically, we first leverage normal and geometry networks to extract the feature vector for each vertex on the SMPLX mesh. Normal maps are adopted for better generalization to unseen images compared to 2D images. Then, features for each vertex on the posed mesh from multiple images are integrated by MLPs. The integrated features acting as the latent code are anchored to the SMPLX mesh in the canonical space. Finally, latent code for each 3D point is extracted and utilized to calculate the SDF. Our work for reconstructing the human shape on canonical pose achieves 3rd performance on WCPA MVP-Human Body Challenge.

Magicremover: Tuning-free Text-guided Image inpainting with Diffusion ModelsSiyuan Yang, Lu Zhang, Liqian Ma et al.
Image inpainting aims to fill in the missing pixels with visually coherent and semantically plausible content. Despite the great progress brought from deep generative models, this task still suffers from i. the difficulties in large-scale realistic data collection and costly model training; and ii. the intrinsic limitations in the traditionally user-defined binary masks on objects with unclear boundaries or transparent texture. In this paper, we propose MagicRemover, a tuning-free method that leverages the powerful diffusion models for text-guided image inpainting. We introduce an attention guidance strategy to constrain the sampling process of diffusion models, enabling the erasing of instructed areas and the restoration of occluded content. We further propose a classifier optimization algorithm to facilitate the denoising stability within less sampling steps. Extensive comparisons are conducted among our MagicRemover and state-of-the-art methods including quantitative evaluation and user study, demonstrating the significant improvement of MagicRemover on high-quality image inpainting. FoV-Net: Field-of-View Extrapolation Using Self-Attention and UncertaintyLiqian Ma, Stamatios Georgoulis, Xu Jia et al.
The ability to make educated predictions about their surroundings, and associate them with certain confidence, is important for intelligent systems, like autonomous vehicles and robots. It allows them to plan early and decide accordingly. Motivated by this observation, in this paper we utilize information from a video sequence with a narrow field-of-view to infer the scene at a wider field-of-view. To this end, we propose a temporally consistent field-of-view extrapolation framework, namely FoV-Net, that: (1) leverages 3D information to propagate the observed scene parts from past frames; (2) aggregates the propagated multi-frame information using an attention-based feature aggregation module and a gated self-attention module, simultaneously hallucinating any unobserved scene parts; and (3) assigns an interpretable uncertainty value at each pixel. Extensive experiments show that FoV-Net does not only extrapolate the temporally consistent wide field-of-view scene better than existing alternatives, but also provides the associated uncertainty which may benefit critical decision-making downstream applications. Cloth2Body: Generating 3D Human Body Mesh from 2D ClothingLu Dai, Liqian Ma, Shenhan Qian et al.
In this paper, we define and study a new Cloth2Body problem which has a goal of generating 3D human body meshes from a 2D clothing image. Unlike the existing human mesh recovery problem, Cloth2Body needs to address new and emerging challenges raised by the partial observation of the input and the high diversity of the output. Indeed, there are three specific challenges. First, how to locate and pose human bodies into the clothes. Second, how to effectively estimate body shapes out of various clothing types. Finally, how to generate diverse and plausible results from a 2D clothing image. To this end, we propose an end-to-end framework that can accurately estimate 3D body mesh parameterized by pose and shape from a 2D clothing image. Along this line, we first utilize Kinematics-aware Pose Estimation to estimate body pose parameters. 3D skeleton is employed as a proxy followed by an inverse kinematics module to boost the estimation accuracy. We additionally design an adaptive depth trick to align the re-projected 3D mesh better with 2D clothing image by disentangling the effects of object size and camera extrinsic. Next, we propose Physics-informed Shape Estimation to estimate body shape parameters. 3D shape parameters are predicted based on partial body measurements estimated from RGB image, which not only improves pixel-wise human-cloth alignment, but also enables flexible user editing. Finally, we design Evolution-based pose generation method, a skeleton transplanting method inspired by genetic algorithms to generate diverse reasonable poses during inference. As shown by experimental results on both synthetic and real-world data, the proposed framework achieves state-of-the-art performance and can effectively recover natural and diverse 3D body meshes from 2D images that align well with clothing.

Bootstraping Clustering of Gaussians for View-consistent 3D Scene UnderstandingWenbo Zhang, Lu Zhang, Ping Hu et al.
Injecting semantics into 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has recently garnered significant attention. While current approaches typically distill 3D semantic features from 2D foundational models (e.g., CLIP and SAM) to facilitate novel view segmentation and semantic understanding, their heavy reliance on 2D supervision can undermine cross-view semantic consistency and necessitate complex data preparation processes, therefore hindering view-consistent scene understanding. In this work, we present FreeGS, an unsupervised semantic-embedded 3DGS framework that achieves view-consistent 3D scene understanding without the need for 2D labels. Instead of directly learning semantic features, we introduce the IDentity-coupled Semantic Field (IDSF) into 3DGS, which captures both semantic representations and view-consistent instance indices for each Gaussian. We optimize IDSF with a two-step alternating strategy: semantics help to extract coherent instances in 3D space, while the resulting instances regularize the injection of stable semantics from 2D space. Additionally, we adopt a 2D-3D joint contrastive loss to enhance the complementarity between view-consistent 3D geometry and rich semantics during the bootstrapping process, enabling FreeGS to uniformly perform tasks such as novel-view semantic segmentation, object selection, and 3D object detection. Extensive experiments on LERF-Mask, 3D-OVS, and ScanNet datasets demonstrate that FreeGS performs comparably to state-of-the-art methods while avoiding the complex data preprocessing workload. VFXMaster: Unlocking Dynamic Visual Effect Generation via In-Context LearningBaolu Li, Yiming Zhang, Qinghe Wang et al.
Visual effects (VFX) are crucial to the expressive power of digital media, yet their creation remains a major challenge for generative AI. Prevailing methods often rely on the one-LoRA-per-effect paradigm, which is resource-intensive and fundamentally incapable of generalizing to unseen effects, thus limiting scalability and creation. To address this challenge, we introduce VFXMaster, the first unified, reference-based framework for VFX video generation. It recasts effect generation as an in-context learning task, enabling it to reproduce diverse dynamic effects from a reference video onto target content. In addition, it demonstrates remarkable generalization to unseen effect categories. Specifically, we design an in-context conditioning strategy that prompts the model with a reference example. An in-context attention mask is designed to precisely decouple and inject the essential effect attributes, allowing a single unified model to master the effect imitation without information leakage. In addition, we propose an efficient one-shot effect adaptation mechanism to boost generalization capability on tough unseen effects from a single user-provided video rapidly. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method effectively imitates various categories of effect information and exhibits outstanding generalization to out-of-domain effects. To foster future research, we will release our code, models, and a comprehensive dataset to the community.

ACWM-Phys: Investigating Generalized Physical Interaction in Action-Conditioned Video World ModelsHaotian Xue, Yipu Chen, Liqian Ma et al.
Action-conditioned world models (ACWMs) have shown strong promise for video prediction and decision-making. However, existing benchmarks are largely restricted to egocentric navigation or narrow, task-specific robotics datasets, offering only limited coverage of the rich physical interactions required for generalized world understanding. We introduce ACWM-Phys, a new benchmark for evaluating action-conditioned prediction under diverse physical dynamics in a clean, controllable simulation environment with a carefully designed action space. ACWM-Phys contains training and evaluation data spanning rigid-body dynamics, kinematics, deformable-object interactions, and particle dynamics. To evaluate both interpolation and generalization, we design in-distribution and out-of-distribution protocols with controlled shifts in interaction patterns or scene configurations. By building the benchmark in a fully controllable simulator, ACWM-Phys enables precise data collection, reproducible evaluation, and systematic analysis of model capabilities for physically grounded world modeling. Through systematic experiments on ACWM-DiT, we find that OoD generalization depends not only on the physical regime but also on effective task complexity: models generalize well on visually simple, low-dimensional interactions with clear geometric structure, but suffer larger drops on deformable contacts, high-dimensional control, and complex articulated motion. This suggests that the model still relies heavily on visual appearance patterns instead of fully learning the underlying physics. Ablations show that cross-attention improves high-dimensional action conditioning, causal VAEs outperform frame-wise encoders, and larger action spaces are harder to model but can improve generalization by providing richer control signals. These findings guide the design of physically grounded world models.

Feedback Motion Planning for Stochastic Nonlinear Systems with Signal Temporal Logic SpecificationsLiqian Ma, Zishun Liu, Glen Chou et al.
We study feedback motion planning for continuous-time stochastic nonlinear systems under signal temporal logic (STL) specifications. We propose a framework that synthesizes control policies for chance-constrained STL trajectory optimization problems, with the goal of ensuring that the closed-loop stochastic system satisfies a given STL formula with high probability (e.g., 99.99\%). Our approach is based on a predicate erosion strategy that transforms the intractable stochastic problem into a deterministic STL trajectory optimization problem with tightened STL formula constraints. The amount of erosion is determined by a probabilistic reachable tube (PRT) that bounds the deviation between the stochastic trajectory and an associated nominal trajectory. To compute such bounds, we leverage contraction theory and feedback design, and develop several tracking controllers. This yields a complete feedback motion planning pipeline which can be implemented by numerical optimizations. We demonstrate the efficacy and versatility of the proposed framework through simulations on several robotic systems and through experiments on a real-world quadrupedal robot, and show that it is less conservative and achieves higher specification satisfaction probability than representative baselines.

StableIdentity: Inserting Anybody into Anywhere at First SightQinghe Wang, Xu Jia, Xiaomin Li et al.
Recent advances in large pretrained text-to-image models have shown unprecedented capabilities for high-quality human-centric generation, however, customizing face identity is still an intractable problem. Existing methods cannot ensure stable identity preservation and flexible editability, even with several images for each subject during training. In this work, we propose StableIdentity, which allows identity-consistent recontextualization with just one face image. More specifically, we employ a face encoder with an identity prior to encode the input face, and then land the face representation into a space with an editable prior, which is constructed from celeb names. By incorporating identity prior and editability prior, the learned identity can be injected anywhere with various contexts. In addition, we design a masked two-phase diffusion loss to boost the pixel-level perception of the input face and maintain the diversity of generation. Extensive experiments demonstrate our method outperforms previous customization methods. In addition, the learned identity can be flexibly combined with the off-the-shelf modules such as ControlNet. Notably, to the best knowledge, we are the first to directly inject the identity learned from a single image into video/3D generation without finetuning. We believe that the proposed StableIdentity is an important step to unify image, video, and 3D customized generation models.

CharacterFactory: Sampling Consistent Characters with GANs for Diffusion ModelsQinghe Wang, Baolu Li, Xiaomin Li et al.
Recent advances in text-to-image models have opened new frontiers in human-centric generation. However, these models cannot be directly employed to generate images with consistent newly coined identities. In this work, we propose CharacterFactory, a framework that allows sampling new characters with consistent identities in the latent space of GANs for diffusion models. More specifically, we consider the word embeddings of celeb names as ground truths for the identity-consistent generation task and train a GAN model to learn the mapping from a latent space to the celeb embedding space. In addition, we design a context-consistent loss to ensure that the generated identity embeddings can produce identity-consistent images in various contexts. Remarkably, the whole model only takes 10 minutes for training, and can sample infinite characters end-to-end during inference. Extensive experiments demonstrate excellent performance of the proposed CharacterFactory on character creation in terms of identity consistency and editability. Furthermore, the generated characters can be seamlessly combined with the off-the-shelf image/video/3D diffusion models. VLIPP: Towards Physically Plausible Video Generation with Vision and Language Informed Physical PriorXindi Yang, Baolu Li, Yiming Zhang et al.
Video diffusion models (VDMs) have advanced significantly in recent years, enabling the generation of highly realistic videos and drawing the attention of the community in their potential as world simulators. However, despite their capabilities, VDMs often fail to produce physically plausible videos due to an inherent lack of understanding of physics, resulting in incorrect dynamics and event sequences. To address this limitation, we propose a novel two-stage image-to-video generation framework that explicitly incorporates physics with vision and language informed physical prior. In the first stage, we employ a Vision Language Model (VLM) as a coarse-grained motion planner, integrating chain-of-thought and physics-aware reasoning to predict a rough motion trajectories/changes that approximate real-world physical dynamics while ensuring the inter-frame consistency. In the second stage, we use the predicted motion trajectories/changes to guide the video generation of a VDM. As the predicted motion trajectories/changes are rough, noise is added during inference to provide freedom to the VDM in generating motion with more fine details. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our framework can produce physically plausible motion, and comparative evaluations highlight the notable superiority of our approach over existing methods. Meta-Control: Automatic Model-based Control Synthesis for Heterogeneous Robot SkillsTianhao Wei, Liqian Ma, Rui Chen et al.
The requirements for real-world manipulation tasks are diverse and often conflicting; some tasks require precise motion while others require force compliance; some tasks require avoidance of certain regions, while others require convergence to certain states. Satisfying these varied requirements with a fixed state-action representation and control strategy is challenging, impeding the development of a universal robotic foundation model. In this work, we propose Meta-Control, the first LLM-enabled automatic control synthesis approach that creates customized state representations and control strategies tailored to specific tasks. Our core insight is that a meta-control system can be built to automate the thought process that human experts use to design control systems. Specifically, human experts heavily use a model-based, hierarchical (from abstract to concrete) thought model, then compose various dynamic models and controllers together to form a control system. Meta-Control mimics the thought model and harnesses LLM's extensive control knowledge with Socrates' "art of midwifery" to automate the thought process. Meta-Control stands out for its fully model-based nature, allowing rigorous analysis, generalizability, robustness, efficient parameter tuning, and reliable real-time execution.

DreamMix: Decoupling Object Attributes for Enhanced Editability in Customized Image InpaintingYicheng Yang, Pengxiang Li, Lu Zhang et al.
Subject-driven image inpainting has recently gained prominence in image editing with the rapid advancement of diffusion models. Beyond image guidance, recent studies have explored incorporating text guidance to achieve identity-preserved yet locally editable object inpainting. However, these methods still suffer from identity overfitting, where original attributes remain entangled with target textual instructions. To overcome this limitation, we propose DreamMix, a diffusion-based framework adept at inserting target objects into user-specified regions while concurrently enabling arbitrary text-driven attribute modifications. DreamMix introduces three key components: (i) an Attribute Decoupling Mechanism (ADM) that synthesizes diverse attribute-augmented image-text pairs to mitigate overfitting; (ii) a Textual Attribute Substitution (TAS) module that isolates target attributes via orthogonal decomposition, and (iii) a Disentangled Inpainting Framework (DIF) that seperates local generation from global harmonization. Extensive experiments across multiple inpainting backbones demonstrate that DreamMix achieves a superior balance between identity preservation and attribute editability across diverse applications, including object insertion, attribute editing, and small object inpainting.

Concentration of Stochastic System Trajectories with Time-varying Contraction ConditionsZishun Liu, Liqian Ma, Hongzhe Yu et al.
We establish two concentration inequalities for nonlinear stochastic system under time-varying contraction conditions. The key to our approach is an energy function termed Averaged Moment Generating Function (AMGF). By combining it with incremental stability analysis, we develop a concentration inequality that bounds the deviation between the stochastic system state and its deterministic counterpart. As this inequality is restricted to single time instance, we further combine AMGF with martingale-based methods to derive a concentration inequality that bounds the fluctuation of the entire stochastic trajectory. Additionally, by synthesizing the two results, we significantly improve the trajectory-level concentration inequality for strongly contractive systems. Given the probability level $1-δ$, the derived inequalities ensure an $\mO(\sqrt{\log(1/δ))}$ bound on the deviation of stochastic trajectories, which is tight under our assumptions. Our results are exemplified through a case study on stochastic safe control.

Generalizable Domain Adaptation for Sim-and-Real Policy Co-TrainingShuo Cheng, Liqian Ma, Zhenyang Chen et al. · mit
Behavior cloning has shown promise for robot manipulation, but real-world demonstrations are costly to acquire at scale. While simulated data offers a scalable alternative, particularly with advances in automated demonstration generation, transferring policies to the real world is hampered by various simulation and real domain gaps. In this work, we propose a unified sim-and-real co-training framework for learning generalizable manipulation policies that primarily leverages simulation and only requires a few real-world demonstrations. Central to our approach is learning a domain-invariant, task-relevant feature space. Our key insight is that aligning the joint distributions of observations and their corresponding actions across domains provides a richer signal than aligning observations (marginals) alone. We achieve this by embedding an Optimal Transport (OT)-inspired loss within the co-training framework, and extend this to an Unbalanced OT framework to handle the imbalance between abundant simulation data and limited real-world examples. We validate our method on challenging manipulation tasks, showing it can leverage abundant simulation data to achieve up to a 30% improvement in the real-world success rate and even generalize to scenarios seen only in simulation.

Adaptive Mimic: Deep Reinforcement Learning of Parameterized Bipedal Walking from Infeasible ReferencesChong Zhang, Qi Wu, Liqian Ma et al.
Not until recently, robust robot locomotion has been achieved by deep reinforcement learning (DRL). However, for efficient learning of parametrized bipedal walking, developed references are usually required, limiting the performance to that of the references. In this paper, we propose to design an adaptive reward function for imitation learning from the references. The agent is encouraged to mimic the references when its performance is low, while to pursue high performance when it reaches the limit of references. We further demonstrate that developed references can be replaced by low-quality references that are generated without laborious tuning and infeasible to deploy by themselves, as long as they can provide a priori knowledge to expedite the learning process.

Trade the Event: Corporate Events Detection for News-Based Event-Driven TradingZhihan Zhou, Liqian Ma, Han Liu
In this paper, we introduce an event-driven trading strategy that predicts stock movements by detecting corporate events from news articles. Unlike existing models that utilize textual features (e.g., bag-of-words) and sentiments to directly make stock predictions, we consider corporate events as the driving force behind stock movements and aim to profit from the temporary stock mispricing that may occur when corporate events take place. The core of the proposed strategy is a bi-level event detection model. The low-level event detector identifies events' existences from each token, while the high-level event detector incorporates the entire article's representation and the low-level detected results to discover events at the article-level. We also develop an elaborately-annotated dataset EDT for corporate event detection and news-based stock prediction benchmark. EDT includes 9721 news articles with token-level event labels as well as 303893 news articles with minute-level timestamps and comprehensive stock price labels. Experiments on EDT indicate that the proposed strategy outperforms all the baselines in winning rate, excess returns over the market, and the average return on each transaction.

Unselfie: Translating Selfies to Neutral-pose Portraits in the WildLiqian Ma, Zhe Lin, Connelly Barnes et al.
Due to the ubiquity of smartphones, it is popular to take photos of one's self, or "selfies." Such photos are convenient to take, because they do not require specialized equipment or a third-party photographer. However, in selfies, constraints such as human arm length often make the body pose look unnatural. To address this issue, we introduce $\textit{unselfie}$, a novel photographic transformation that automatically translates a selfie into a neutral-pose portrait. To achieve this, we first collect an unpaired dataset, and introduce a way to synthesize paired training data for self-supervised learning. Then, to $\textit{unselfie}$ a photo, we propose a new three-stage pipeline, where we first find a target neutral pose, inpaint the body texture, and finally refine and composite the person on the background. To obtain a suitable target neutral pose, we propose a novel nearest pose search module that makes the reposing task easier and enables the generation of multiple neutral-pose results among which users can choose the best one they like. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations show the superiority of our pipeline over alternatives.

A Novel BiLevel Paradigm for Image-to-Image TranslationLiqian Ma, Qianru Sun, Bernt Schiele et al.
Image-to-image (I2I) translation is a pixel-level mapping that requires a large number of paired training data and often suffers from the problems of high diversity and strong category bias in image scenes. In order to tackle these problems, we propose a novel BiLevel (BiL) learning paradigm that alternates the learning of two models, respectively at an instance-specific (IS) and a general-purpose (GP) level. In each scene, the IS model learns to maintain the specific scene attributes. It is initialized by the GP model that learns from all the scenes to obtain the generalizable translation knowledge. This GP initialization gives the IS model an efficient starting point, thus enabling its fast adaptation to the new scene with scarce training data. We conduct extensive I2I translation experiments on human face and street view datasets. Quantitative results validate that our approach can significantly boost the performance of classical I2I translation models, such as PG2 and Pix2Pix. Our visualization results show both higher image quality and more appropriate instance-specific details, e.g., the translated image of a person looks more like that person in terms of identity.

An Unpaired Shape Transforming Method for Image Translation and Cross-Domain RetrievalKaili Wang, Liqian Ma, Jose Oramas et al.
We address the problem of unpaired geometric image-to-image translation. Rather than transferring the style of an image as a whole, our goal is to translate the geometry of an object as depicted in different domains while preserving its appearance characteristics. Our model is trained in an unpaired fashion, i.e. without the need of paired images during training. It performs all steps of the shape transfer within a single model and without additional post-processing stages. Extensive experiments on the VITON, CMU-Multi-PIE and our own FashionStyle datasets show the effectiveness of the method. In addition, we show that despite their low-dimensionality, the features learned by our model are useful to the item retrieval task.

Exemplar Guided Unsupervised Image-to-Image Translation with Semantic ConsistencyLiqian Ma, Xu Jia, Stamatios Georgoulis et al.
Image-to-image translation has recently received significant attention due to advances in deep learning. Most works focus on learning either a one-to-one mapping in an unsupervised way or a many-to-many mapping in a supervised way. However, a more practical setting is many-to-many mapping in an unsupervised way, which is harder due to the lack of supervision and the complex inner- and cross-domain variations. To alleviate these issues, we propose the Exemplar Guided & Semantically Consistent Image-to-image Translation (EGSC-IT) network which conditions the translation process on an exemplar image in the target domain. We assume that an image comprises of a content component which is shared across domains, and a style component specific to each domain. Under the guidance of an exemplar from the target domain we apply Adaptive Instance Normalization to the shared content component, which allows us to transfer the style information of the target domain to the source domain. To avoid semantic inconsistencies during translation that naturally appear due to the large inner- and cross-domain variations, we introduce the concept of feature masks that provide coarse semantic guidance without requiring the use of any semantic labels. Experimental results on various datasets show that EGSC-IT does not only translate the source image to diverse instances in the target domain, but also preserves the semantic consistency during the process.

Disentangled Person Image GenerationLiqian Ma, Qianru Sun, Stamatios Georgoulis et al.
Generating novel, yet realistic, images of persons is a challenging task due to the complex interplay between the different image factors, such as the foreground, background and pose information. In this work, we aim at generating such images based on a novel, two-stage reconstruction pipeline that learns a disentangled representation of the aforementioned image factors and generates novel person images at the same time. First, a multi-branched reconstruction network is proposed to disentangle and encode the three factors into embedding features, which are then combined to re-compose the input image itself. Second, three corresponding mapping functions are learned in an adversarial manner in order to map Gaussian noise to the learned embedding feature space, for each factor respectively. Using the proposed framework, we can manipulate the foreground, background and pose of the input image, and also sample new embedding features to generate such targeted manipulations, that provide more control over the generation process. Experiments on Market-1501 and Deepfashion datasets show that our model does not only generate realistic person images with new foregrounds, backgrounds and poses, but also manipulates the generated factors and interpolates the in-between states. Another set of experiments on Market-1501 shows that our model can also be beneficial for the person re-identification task.

Natural and Effective Obfuscation by Head InpaintingQianru Sun, Liqian Ma, Seong Joon Oh et al.
As more and more personal photos are shared online, being able to obfuscate identities in such photos is becoming a necessity for privacy protection. People have largely resorted to blacking out or blurring head regions, but they result in poor user experience while being surprisingly ineffective against state of the art person recognizers. In this work, we propose a novel head inpainting obfuscation technique. Generating a realistic head inpainting in social media photos is challenging because subjects appear in diverse activities and head orientations. We thus split the task into two sub-tasks: (1) facial landmark generation from image context (e.g. body pose) for seamless hypothesis of sensible head pose, and (2) facial landmark conditioned head inpainting. We verify that our inpainting method generates realistic person images, while achieving superior obfuscation performance against automatic person recognizers.

This paper proposes the novel Pose Guided Person Generation Network (PG$^2$) that allows to synthesize person images in arbitrary poses, based on an image of that person and a novel pose. Our generation framework PG$^2$ utilizes the pose information explicitly and consists of two key stages: pose integration and image refinement. In the first stage the condition image and the target pose are fed into a U-Net-like network to generate an initial but coarse image of the person with the target pose. The second stage then refines the initial and blurry result by training a U-Net-like generator in an adversarial way. Extensive experimental results on both 128$\times$64 re-identification images and 256$\times$256 fashion photos show that our model generates high-quality person images with convincing details.

Orientation Driven Bag of Appearances for Person Re-identificationLiqian Ma, Hong Liu, Liang Hu et al.
Person re-identification (re-id) consists of associating individual across camera network, which is valuable for intelligent video surveillance and has drawn wide attention. Although person re-identification research is making progress, it still faces some challenges such as varying poses, illumination and viewpoints. For feature representation in re-identification, existing works usually use low-level descriptors which do not take full advantage of body structure information, resulting in low representation ability. %discrimination. To solve this problem, this paper proposes the mid-level body-structure based feature representation (BSFR) which introduces body structure pyramid for codebook learning and feature pooling in the vertical direction of human body. Besides, varying viewpoints in the horizontal direction of human body usually causes the data missing problem, $i.e.$, the appearances obtained in different orientations of the identical person could vary significantly. To address this problem, the orientation driven bag of appearances (ODBoA) is proposed to utilize person orientation information extracted by orientation estimation technic. To properly evaluate the proposed approach, we introduce a new re-identification dataset (Market-1203) based on the Market-1501 dataset and propose a new re-identification dataset (PKU-Reid). Both datasets contain multiple images captured in different body orientations for each person. Experimental results on three public datasets and two proposed datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach, indicating the effectiveness of body structure and orientation information for improving re-identification performance.

Appearance Harmonization for Single Image Shadow RemovalLiqian Ma, Jue Wang, Eli Shechtman et al.
Shadows often create unwanted artifacts in photographs, and removing them can be very challenging. Previous shadow removal methods often produce de-shadowed regions that are visually inconsistent with the rest of the image. In this work we propose a fully automatic shadow region harmonization approach that improves the appearance compatibility of the de-shadowed region as typically produced by previous methods. It is based on a shadow-guided patch-based image synthesis approach that reconstructs the shadow region using patches sampled from non-shadowed regions. The result is then refined based on the reconstruction confidence to handle unique image patterns. Many shadow removal results and comparisons are show the effectiveness of our improvement. Quantitative evaluation on a benchmark dataset suggests that our automatic shadow harmonization approach effectively improves upon the state-of-the-art.
