Cross-Modal Alignment with Mixture Experts Neural Network for Intral-City Retail Recommendation

Po Li, Lei Li, Yan Fu et al.

In this paper, we introduce Cross-modal Alignment with mixture experts Neural Network (CameNN) recommendation model for intral-city retail industry, which aims to provide fresh foods and groceries retailing within 5 hours delivery service arising for the outbreak of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic around the world. We propose CameNN, which is a multi-task model with three tasks including Image to Text Alignment (ITA) task, Text to Image Alignment (TIA) task and CVR prediction task. We use pre-trained BERT to generate the text embedding and pre-trained InceptionV4 to generate image patch embedding (each image is split into small patches with the same pixels and treat each patch as an image token). Softmax gating networks follow to learn the weight of each transformer expert output and choose only a subset of experts conditioned on the input. Then transformer encoder is applied as the share-bottom layer to learn all input features' shared interaction. Next, mixture of transformer experts (MoE) layer is implemented to model different aspects of tasks. At top of the MoE layer, we deploy a transformer layer for each task as task tower to learn task-specific information. On the real word intra-city dataset, experiments demonstrate CameNN outperform baselines and achieve significant improvements on the image and text representation. In practice, we applied CameNN on CVR prediction in our intra-city recommender system which is one of the leading intra-city platforms operated in China.

An End-to-End Attack on Text-based CAPTCHAs Based on Cycle-Consistent Generative Adversarial Network

Chunhui Li, Xingshu Chen, Haizhou Wang et al.

As a widely deployed security scheme, text-based CAPTCHAs have become more and more difficult to resist machine learning-based attacks. So far, many researchers have conducted attacking research on text-based CAPTCHAs deployed by different companies (such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple) and achieved certain results. However, most of these attacks have some shortcomings, such as poor portability of attack methods, requiring a series of data preprocessing steps, and relying on large amounts of labeled CAPTCHAs. In this paper, we propose an efficient and simple end-to-end attack method based on cycle-consistent generative adversarial networks. Compared with previous studies, our method greatly reduces the cost of data labeling. In addition, this method has high portability. It can attack common text-based CAPTCHA schemes only by modifying a few configuration parameters, which makes the attack easier. Firstly, we train CAPTCHA synthesizers based on the cycle-GAN to generate some fake samples. Basic recognizers based on the convolutional recurrent neural network are trained with the fake data. Subsequently, an active transfer learning method is employed to optimize the basic recognizer utilizing tiny amounts of labeled real-world CAPTCHA samples. Our approach efficiently cracked the CAPTCHA schemes deployed by 10 popular websites, indicating that our attack is likely very general. Additionally, we analyzed the current most popular anti-recognition mechanisms. The results show that the combination of more anti-recognition mechanisms can improve the security of CAPTCHA, but the improvement is limited. Conversely, generating more complex CAPTCHAs may cost more resources and reduce the availability of CAPTCHAs.

Federated Hierarchical Hybrid Networks for Clickbait Detection

Feng Liao, Hankz Hankui Zhuo, Xiaoling Huang et al.

Online media outlets adopt clickbait techniques to lure readers to click on articles in a bid to expand their reach and subsequently increase revenue through ad monetization. As the adverse effects of clickbait attract more and more attention, researchers have started to explore machine learning techniques to automatically detect clickbaits. Previous work on clickbait detection assumes that all the training data is available locally during training. In many real-world applications, however, training data is generally distributedly stored by different parties (e.g., different parties maintain data with different feature spaces), and the parties cannot share their data with each other due to data privacy issues. It is challenging to build models of high-quality federally for detecting clickbaits effectively without data sharing. In this paper, we propose a federated training framework, which is called federated hierarchical hybrid networks, to build clickbait detection models, where the titles and contents are stored by different parties, whose relationships must be exploited for clickbait detection. We empirically demonstrate that our approach is effective by comparing our approach to the state-of-the-art approaches using datasets from social media.

Modeling and Predicting Popularity Dynamics via Deep Learning Attention Mechanism

Sha Yuan, Yu Zhang, Jie Tang et al.

An ability to predict the popularity dynamics of individual items within a complex evolving system has important implications in a wide range of domains. Here we propose a deep learning attention mechanism to model the process through which individual items gain their popularity. We analyze the interpretability of the model with the four key phenomena confirmed independently in the previous studies of long-term popularity dynamics quantification, including the intrinsic quality, the aging effect, the recency effect and the Matthew effect. We analyze the effectiveness of introducing attention model in popularity dynamics prediction. Extensive experiments on a real-large citation data set demonstrate that the designed deep learning attention mechanism possesses remarkable power at predicting the long-term popularity dynamics. It consistently outperforms the existing methods, and achieves a significant performance improvement.

Neural Recovery Machine for Chinese Dropped Pronoun

Wei-Nan Zhang, Ting Liu, Qingyu Yin et al.

Dropped pronouns (DPs) are ubiquitous in pro-drop languages like Chinese, Japanese etc. Previous work mainly focused on painstakingly exploring the empirical features for DPs recovery. In this paper, we propose a neural recovery machine (NRM) to model and recover DPs in Chinese, so that to avoid the non-trivial feature engineering process. The experimental results show that the proposed NRM significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches on both two heterogeneous datasets. Further experiment results of Chinese zero pronoun (ZP) resolution show that the performance of ZP resolution can also be improved by recovering the ZPs to DPs.
