Few-View Object Reconstruction with Unknown Categories and Camera Poses

Hanwen Jiang, Zhenyu Jiang, Kristen Grauman et al.

While object reconstruction has made great strides in recent years, current methods typically require densely captured images and/or known camera poses, and generalize poorly to novel object categories. To step toward object reconstruction in the wild, this work explores reconstructing general real-world objects from a few images without known camera poses or object categories. The crux of our work is solving two fundamental 3D vision problems -- shape reconstruction and pose estimation -- in a unified approach. Our approach captures the synergies of these two problems: reliable camera pose estimation gives rise to accurate shape reconstruction, and the accurate reconstruction, in turn, induces robust correspondence between different views and facilitates pose estimation. Our method FORGE predicts 3D features from each view and leverages them in conjunction with the input images to establish cross-view correspondence for estimating relative camera poses. The 3D features are then transformed by the estimated poses into a shared space and are fused into a neural radiance field. The reconstruction results are rendered by volume rendering techniques, enabling us to train the model without 3D shape ground-truth. Our experiments show that FORGE reliably reconstructs objects from five views. Our pose estimation method outperforms existing ones by a large margin. The reconstruction results under predicted poses are comparable to the ones using ground-truth poses. The performance on novel testing categories matches the results on categories seen during training. Project page: https://ut-austin-rpl.github.io/FORGE/

Pose-Free Generalizable Rendering Transformer

Zhiwen Fan, Panwang Pan, Peihao Wang et al.

In the field of novel-view synthesis, the necessity of knowing camera poses (e.g., via Structure from Motion) before rendering has been a common practice. However, the consistent acquisition of accurate camera poses remains elusive, and errors in pose extraction can adversely impact the view synthesis process. To address this challenge, we introduce PF-GRT, a new Pose-Free framework for Generalizable Rendering Transformer, eliminating the need for pre-computed camera poses and instead leveraging feature-matching learned directly from data. PF-GRT is parameterized using a local relative coordinate system, where one of the source images is set as the origin. An OmniView Transformer is designed for fusing multi-view cues under the pose-free setting, where unposed-view fusion and origin-centric aggregation are performed. The 3D point feature along target ray is sampled by projecting onto the selected origin plane. The final pixel intensities are modulated and decoded using another Transformer. PF-GRT demonstrates an impressive ability to generalize to new scenes that were not encountered during the training phase, without the need of pre-computing camera poses. Our experiments with zero-shot rendering on the LLFF, RealEstate-10k, Shiny, and Blender datasets reveal that it produces superior quality in generating photo-realistic images. Moreover, it demonstrates robustness against noise in test camera poses. Code is available at https://zhiwenfan.github.io/PF-GRT/.

Single-Stage Visual Query Localization in Egocentric Videos

Hanwen Jiang, Santhosh Kumar Ramakrishnan, Kristen Grauman

Visual Query Localization on long-form egocentric videos requires spatio-temporal search and localization of visually specified objects and is vital to build episodic memory systems. Prior work develops complex multi-stage pipelines that leverage well-established object detection and tracking methods to perform VQL. However, each stage is independently trained and the complexity of the pipeline results in slow inference speeds. We propose VQLoC, a novel single-stage VQL framework that is end-to-end trainable. Our key idea is to first build a holistic understanding of the query-video relationship and then perform spatio-temporal localization in a single shot manner. Specifically, we establish the query-video relationship by jointly considering query-to-frame correspondences between the query and each video frame and frame-to-frame correspondences between nearby video frames. Our experiments demonstrate that our approach outperforms prior VQL methods by 20% accuracy while obtaining a 10x improvement in inference speed. VQLoC is also the top entry on the Ego4D VQ2D challenge leaderboard. Project page: https://hwjiang1510.github.io/VQLoC/

LEAP: Liberate Sparse-view 3D Modeling from Camera Poses

Hanwen Jiang, Zhenyu Jiang, Yue Zhao et al.

Are camera poses necessary for multi-view 3D modeling? Existing approaches predominantly assume access to accurate camera poses. While this assumption might hold for dense views, accurately estimating camera poses for sparse views is often elusive. Our analysis reveals that noisy estimated poses lead to degraded performance for existing sparse-view 3D modeling methods. To address this issue, we present LEAP, a novel pose-free approach, therefore challenging the prevailing notion that camera poses are indispensable. LEAP discards pose-based operations and learns geometric knowledge from data. LEAP is equipped with a neural volume, which is shared across scenes and is parameterized to encode geometry and texture priors. For each incoming scene, we update the neural volume by aggregating 2D image features in a feature-similarity-driven manner. The updated neural volume is decoded into the radiance field, enabling novel view synthesis from any viewpoint. On both object-centric and scene-level datasets, we show that LEAP significantly outperforms prior methods when they employ predicted poses from state-of-the-art pose estimators. Notably, LEAP performs on par with prior approaches that use ground-truth poses while running $400\times$ faster than PixelNeRF. We show LEAP generalizes to novel object categories and scenes, and learns knowledge closely resembles epipolar geometry. Project page: https://hwjiang1510.github.io/LEAP/

Atlas Gaussians Diffusion for 3D Generation

Haitao Yang, Yuan Dong, Hanwen Jiang et al.

Using the latent diffusion model has proven effective in developing novel 3D generation techniques. To harness the latent diffusion model, a key challenge is designing a high-fidelity and efficient representation that links the latent space and the 3D space. In this paper, we introduce Atlas Gaussians, a novel representation for feed-forward native 3D generation. Atlas Gaussians represent a shape as the union of local patches, and each patch can decode 3D Gaussians. We parameterize a patch as a sequence of feature vectors and design a learnable function to decode 3D Gaussians from the feature vectors. In this process, we incorporate UV-based sampling, enabling the generation of a sufficiently large, and theoretically infinite, number of 3D Gaussian points. The large amount of 3D Gaussians enables the generation of high-quality details. Moreover, due to local awareness of the representation, the transformer-based decoding procedure operates on a patch level, ensuring efficiency. We train a variational autoencoder to learn the Atlas Gaussians representation, and then apply a latent diffusion model on its latent space for learning 3D Generation. Experiments show that our approach outperforms the prior arts of feed-forward native 3D generation. Project page: https://yanghtr.github.io/projects/atlas_gaussians.

Doduo: Learning Dense Visual Correspondence from Unsupervised Semantic-Aware Flow

Zhenyu Jiang, Hanwen Jiang, Yuke Zhu

Dense visual correspondence plays a vital role in robotic perception. This work focuses on establishing the dense correspondence between a pair of images that captures dynamic scenes undergoing substantial transformations. We introduce Doduo to learn general dense visual correspondence from in-the-wild images and videos without ground truth supervision. Given a pair of images, it estimates the dense flow field encoding the displacement of each pixel in one image to its corresponding pixel in the other image. Doduo uses flow-based warping to acquire supervisory signals for the training. Incorporating semantic priors with self-supervised flow training, Doduo produces accurate dense correspondence robust to the dynamic changes of the scenes. Trained on an in-the-wild video dataset, Doduo illustrates superior performance on point-level correspondence estimation over existing self-supervised correspondence learning baselines. We also apply Doduo to articulation estimation and zero-shot goal-conditioned manipulation, underlining its practical applications in robotics. Code and additional visualizations are available at https://ut-austin-rpl.github.io/Doduo

E-RayZer: Self-supervised 3D Reconstruction as Spatial Visual Pre-training

Qitao Zhao, Hao Tan, Qianqian Wang et al.

Self-supervised pre-training has revolutionized foundation models for languages, individual 2D images and videos, but remains largely unexplored for learning 3D-aware representations from multi-view images. In this paper, we present E-RayZer, a self-supervised large 3D Vision model that learns truly 3D-aware representations directly from unlabeled images. Unlike prior self-supervised methods such as RayZer that infer 3D indirectly through latent-space view synthesis, E-RayZer operates directly in 3D space, performing self-supervised 3D reconstruction with Explicit geometry. This formulation eliminates shortcut solutions and yields representations that are geometrically grounded. To ensure convergence and scalability, we introduce a novel fine-grained learning curriculum that organizes training from easy to hard samples and harmonizes heterogeneous data sources in an entirely unsupervised manner. Experiments demonstrate that E-RayZer significantly outperforms RayZer on pose estimation, matches or sometimes surpasses fully supervised reconstruction models such as VGGT. Furthermore, its learned representations outperform leading visual pre-training models (e.g., DINOv3, CroCo v2, VideoMAE V2, and RayZer) when transferring to 3D downstream tasks, establishing E-RayZer as a new paradigm for 3D-aware visual pre-training.

HumanNOVA: Photorealistic, Universal and Rapid 3D Human Avatar Modeling from a Single Image

Hezhen Hu, Wangbo Zhao, Lanqing Guo et al.

In this paper, we present HumanNOVA, a photorealistic, universal, and rapid model for generating 3D human avatars from a single RGB image. Achieving both photorealism and generalization is challenging due to the scarcity of diverse, high-quality 3D human data. To address this, we build a scalable data generation pipeline that follows two strategies. The first one is to leverage existing rigged assets and animate them with extensive poses from daily life. The second strategy is to utilize existing multi-camera captures of humans and employ fitting to generate more diverse views for training. These two strategies enable us to scale up to 100k assets, significantly enhancing both the quantity and the diversity of data for robust model training. In terms of the architecture, HumanNOVA adopts a feed-forward, token-conditioned avatar modeling framework that allows fast inference in less than one second and requires no test-time optimization. Given an input image and an estimated simplified human mesh (SMPL) without detailed geometry or appearance, the model first encodes both inputs into compact token representations. These tokens then act as conditioning signals and are fused through cross-attention to construct a triplane-based 3D avatar representation. Extensive experiments on multiple benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of our approach, both quantitatively and qualitatively, as well as its robustness under diverse input image conditions. MotiMotion: Motion-Controlled Video Generation with Visual Reasoning

Lee Hsin-Ying, Hanwen Jiang, Yiqun Mei et al.

Current motion-controlled image-to-video generation models rigidly follow user-provided trajectories that are often sparse, imprecise, and causally incomplete. Such reliance often yields unnatural or implausible outcomes, especially by missing secondary causal consequences. To address this, we introduce MotiMotion, a novel framework that reformulates motion control as a reasoning-then-generation problem. To encourage causally grounded and commonsense-consistent interactions, we leverage a training-free vision-language reasoner to refine image-space coordinates of primary trajectories and to hallucinate plausible secondary motions. To further improve motion naturalness, we propose a confidence-aware control scheme that modulates guidance strength, enabling the model to closely follow high-confidence plans while correcting artifacts under low-confidence inputs with its internal generative priors. To support systematic evaluation, we curate a new image-to-video benchmark, MotiBench, consisting of interaction-centric scenes where new events are triggered by motion. Both VLM-based evaluation and a human study on MotiBench demonstrate that MotiMotion produces videos with more plausible object behaviors and interaction, and is preferred over existing approaches.

Spherical Leech Quantization for Visual Tokenization and Generation

Yue Zhao, Hanwen Jiang, Zhenlin Xu et al.

Non-parametric quantization has received much attention due to its efficiency on parameters and scalability to a large codebook. In this paper, we present a unified formulation of different non-parametric quantization methods through the lens of lattice coding. The geometry of lattice codes explains the necessity of auxiliary loss terms when training auto-encoders with certain existing lookup-free quantization variants such as BSQ. As a step forward, we explore a few possible candidates, including random lattices, generalized Fibonacci lattices, and densest sphere packing lattices. Among all, we find the Leech lattice-based quantization method, which is dubbed as Spherical Leech Quantization ($Λ_{24}$-SQ), leads to both a simplified training recipe and an improved reconstruction-compression tradeoff thanks to its high symmetry and even distribution on the hypersphere. In image tokenization and compression tasks, this quantization approach achieves better reconstruction quality across all metrics than BSQ, the best prior art, while consuming slightly fewer bits. The improvement also extends to state-of-the-art auto-regressive image generation frameworks.

Mining Attribute Subspaces for Efficient Fine-tuning of 3D Foundation Models

Yu Jiang, Hanwen Jiang, Ahmed Abdelkader et al.

With the emergence of 3D foundation models, there is growing interest in fine-tuning them for downstream tasks, where LoRA is the dominant fine-tuning paradigm. As 3D datasets exhibit distinct variations in texture, geometry, camera motion, and lighting, there are interesting fundamental questions: 1) Are there LoRA subspaces associated with each type of variation? 2) Are these subspaces disentangled (i.e., orthogonal to each other)? 3) How do we compute them effectively? This paper provides answers to all these questions. We introduce a robust approach that generates synthetic datasets with controlled variations, fine-tunes a LoRA adapter on each dataset, and extracts a LoRA sub-space associated with each type of variation. We show that these subspaces are approximately disentangled. Integrating them leads to a reduced LoRA subspace that enables efficient LoRA fine-tuning with improved prediction accuracy for downstream tasks. In particular, we show that such a reduced LoRA subspace, despite being derived entirely from synthetic data, generalizes to real datasets. An ablation study validates the effectiveness of the choices in our approach.

LVSM: A Large View Synthesis Model with Minimal 3D Inductive Bias

Haian Jin, Hanwen Jiang, Hao Tan et al. · deepmind

We propose the Large View Synthesis Model (LVSM), a novel transformer-based approach for scalable and generalizable novel view synthesis from sparse-view inputs. We introduce two architectures: (1) an encoder-decoder LVSM, which encodes input image tokens into a fixed number of 1D latent tokens, functioning as a fully learned scene representation, and decodes novel-view images from them; and (2) a decoder-only LVSM, which directly maps input images to novel-view outputs, completely eliminating intermediate scene representations. Both models bypass the 3D inductive biases used in previous methods -- from 3D representations (e.g., NeRF, 3DGS) to network designs (e.g., epipolar projections, plane sweeps) -- addressing novel view synthesis with a fully data-driven approach. While the encoder-decoder model offers faster inference due to its independent latent representation, the decoder-only LVSM achieves superior quality, scalability, and zero-shot generalization, outperforming previous state-of-the-art methods by 1.5 to 3.5 dB PSNR. Comprehensive evaluations across multiple datasets demonstrate that both LVSM variants achieve state-of-the-art novel view synthesis quality. Notably, our models surpass all previous methods even with reduced computational resources (1-2 GPUs). Please see our website for more details: https://haian-jin.github.io/projects/LVSM/ .

OmniGlue: Generalizable Feature Matching with Foundation Model Guidance

Hanwen Jiang, Arjun Karpur, Bingyi Cao et al.

The image matching field has been witnessing a continuous emergence of novel learnable feature matching techniques, with ever-improving performance on conventional benchmarks. However, our investigation shows that despite these gains, their potential for real-world applications is restricted by their limited generalization capabilities to novel image domains. In this paper, we introduce OmniGlue, the first learnable image matcher that is designed with generalization as a core principle. OmniGlue leverages broad knowledge from a vision foundation model to guide the feature matching process, boosting generalization to domains not seen at training time. Additionally, we propose a novel keypoint position-guided attention mechanism which disentangles spatial and appearance information, leading to enhanced matching descriptors. We perform comprehensive experiments on a suite of $7$ datasets with varied image domains, including scene-level, object-centric and aerial images. OmniGlue's novel components lead to relative gains on unseen domains of $20.9\%$ with respect to a directly comparable reference model, while also outperforming the recent LightGlue method by $9.5\%$ relatively.Code and model can be found at https://hwjiang1510.github.io/OmniGlue

MegaSynth: Scaling Up 3D Scene Reconstruction with Synthesized Data

Hanwen Jiang, Zexiang Xu, Desai Xie et al.

We propose scaling up 3D scene reconstruction by training with synthesized data. At the core of our work is MegaSynth, a procedurally generated 3D dataset comprising 700K scenes - over 50 times larger than the prior real dataset DL3DV - dramatically scaling the training data. To enable scalable data generation, our key idea is eliminating semantic information, removing the need to model complex semantic priors such as object affordances and scene composition. Instead, we model scenes with basic spatial structures and geometry primitives, offering scalability. Besides, we control data complexity to facilitate training while loosely aligning it with real-world data distribution to benefit real-world generalization. We explore training LRMs with both MegaSynth and available real data. Experiment results show that joint training or pre-training with MegaSynth improves reconstruction quality by 1.2 to 1.8 dB PSNR across diverse image domains. Moreover, models trained solely on MegaSynth perform comparably to those trained on real data, underscoring the low-level nature of 3D reconstruction. Additionally, we provide an in-depth analysis of MegaSynth's properties for enhancing model capability, training stability, and generalization, as well as application to other tasks.

Real3D: Scaling Up Large Reconstruction Models with Real-World Images

Hanwen Jiang, Qixing Huang, Georgios Pavlakos

The default strategy for training single-view Large Reconstruction Models (LRMs) follows the fully supervised route using large-scale datasets of synthetic 3D assets or multi-view captures. Although these resources simplify the training procedure, they are hard to scale up beyond the existing datasets and they are not necessarily representative of the real distribution of object shapes. To address these limitations, in this paper, we introduce Real3D, the first LRM system that can be trained using single-view real-world images. Real3D introduces a novel self-training framework that can benefit from both the existing synthetic data and diverse single-view real images. We propose two unsupervised losses that allow us to supervise LRMs at the pixel- and semantic-level, even for training examples without ground-truth 3D or novel views. To further improve performance and scale up the image data, we develop an automatic data curation approach to collect high-quality examples from in-the-wild images. Our experiments show that Real3D consistently outperforms prior work in four diverse evaluation settings that include real and synthetic data, as well as both in-domain and out-of-domain shapes. CoFie: Learning Compact Neural Surface Representations with Coordinate Fields

Hanwen Jiang, Haitao Yang, Georgios Pavlakos et al.

This paper introduces CoFie, a novel local geometry-aware neural surface representation. CoFie is motivated by the theoretical analysis of local SDFs with quadratic approximation. We find that local shapes are highly compressive in an aligned coordinate frame defined by the normal and tangent directions of local shapes. Accordingly, we introduce Coordinate Field, which is a composition of coordinate frames of all local shapes. The Coordinate Field is optimizable and is used to transform the local shapes from the world coordinate frame to the aligned shape coordinate frame. It largely reduces the complexity of local shapes and benefits the learning of MLP-based implicit representations. Moreover, we introduce quadratic layers into the MLP to enhance expressiveness concerning local shape geometry. CoFie is a generalizable surface representation. It is trained on a curated set of 3D shapes and works on novel shape instances during testing. When using the same amount of parameters with prior works, CoFie reduces the shape error by 48% and 56% on novel instances of both training and unseen shape categories. Moreover, CoFie demonstrates comparable performance to prior works when using only 70% fewer parameters.

POPE: 6-DoF Promptable Pose Estimation of Any Object, in Any Scene, with One Reference

Zhiwen Fan, Panwang Pan, Peihao Wang et al.

Despite the significant progress in six degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) object pose estimation, existing methods have limited applicability in real-world scenarios involving embodied agents and downstream 3D vision tasks. These limitations mainly come from the necessity of 3D models, closed-category detection, and a large number of densely annotated support views. To mitigate this issue, we propose a general paradigm for object pose estimation, called Promptable Object Pose Estimation (POPE). The proposed approach POPE enables zero-shot 6DoF object pose estimation for any target object in any scene, while only a single reference is adopted as the support view. To achieve this, POPE leverages the power of the pre-trained large-scale 2D foundation model, employs a framework with hierarchical feature representation and 3D geometry principles. Moreover, it estimates the relative camera pose between object prompts and the target object in new views, enabling both two-view and multi-view 6DoF pose estimation tasks. Comprehensive experimental results demonstrate that POPE exhibits unrivaled robust performance in zero-shot settings, by achieving a significant reduction in the averaged Median Pose Error by 52.38% and 50.47% on the LINEMOD and OnePose datasets, respectively. We also conduct more challenging testings in causally captured images (see Figure 1), which further demonstrates the robustness of POPE. DexMV: Imitation Learning for Dexterous Manipulation from Human Videos

Yuzhe Qin, Yueh-Hua Wu, Shaowei Liu et al.

While significant progress has been made on understanding hand-object interactions in computer vision, it is still very challenging for robots to perform complex dexterous manipulation. In this paper, we propose a new platform and pipeline DexMV (Dexterous Manipulation from Videos) for imitation learning. We design a platform with: (i) a simulation system for complex dexterous manipulation tasks with a multi-finger robot hand and (ii) a computer vision system to record large-scale demonstrations of a human hand conducting the same tasks. In our novel pipeline, we extract 3D hand and object poses from videos, and propose a novel demonstration translation method to convert human motion to robot demonstrations. We then apply and benchmark multiple imitation learning algorithms with the demonstrations. We show that the demonstrations can indeed improve robot learning by a large margin and solve the complex tasks which reinforcement learning alone cannot solve. Semi-Supervised 3D Hand-Object Poses Estimation with Interactions in Time

Shaowei Liu, Hanwen Jiang, Jiarui Xu et al.

Estimating 3D hand and object pose from a single image is an extremely challenging problem: hands and objects are often self-occluded during interactions, and the 3D annotations are scarce as even humans cannot directly label the ground-truths from a single image perfectly. To tackle these challenges, we propose a unified framework for estimating the 3D hand and object poses with semi-supervised learning. We build a joint learning framework where we perform explicit contextual reasoning between hand and object representations by a Transformer. Going beyond limited 3D annotations in a single image, we leverage the spatial-temporal consistency in large-scale hand-object videos as a constraint for generating pseudo labels in semi-supervised learning. Our method not only improves hand pose estimation in challenging real-world dataset, but also substantially improve the object pose which has fewer ground-truths per instance. By training with large-scale diverse videos, our model also generalizes better across multiple out-of-domain datasets. Project page and code: https://stevenlsw.github.io/Semi-Hand-Object

Hand-Object Contact Consistency Reasoning for Human Grasps Generation

Hanwen Jiang, Shaowei Liu, Jiashun Wang et al.

While predicting robot grasps with parallel jaw grippers have been well studied and widely applied in robot manipulation tasks, the study on natural human grasp generation with a multi-finger hand remains a very challenging problem. In this paper, we propose to generate human grasps given a 3D object in the world. Our key observation is that it is crucial to model the consistency between the hand contact points and object contact regions. That is, we encourage the prior hand contact points to be close to the object surface and the object common contact regions to be touched by the hand at the same time. Based on the hand-object contact consistency, we design novel objectives in training the human grasp generation model and also a new self-supervised task which allows the grasp generation network to be adjusted even during test time. Our experiments show significant improvement in human grasp generation over state-of-the-art approaches by a large margin. More interestingly, by optimizing the model during test time with the self-supervised task, it helps achieve larger gain on unseen and out-of-domain objects.
