Discovering Dynamic Patterns from Spatiotemporal Data with Time-Varying Low-Rank AutoregressionXinyu Chen, Chengyuan Zhang, Xiaoxu Chen et al.
The problem of broad practical interest in spatiotemporal data analysis, i.e., discovering interpretable dynamic patterns from spatiotemporal data, is studied in this paper. Towards this end, we develop a time-varying reduced-rank vector autoregression (VAR) model whose coefficient matrices are parameterized by low-rank tensor factorization. Benefiting from the tensor factorization structure, the proposed model can simultaneously achieve model compression and pattern discovery. In particular, the proposed model allows one to characterize nonstationarity and time-varying system behaviors underlying spatiotemporal data. To evaluate the proposed model, extensive experiments are conducted on various spatiotemporal data representing different nonlinear dynamical systems, including fluid dynamics, sea surface temperature, USA surface temperature, and NYC taxi trips. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of modeling spatiotemporal data and characterizing spatial/temporal patterns with the proposed model. In the spatial context, the spatial patterns can be automatically extracted and intuitively characterized by the spatial modes. In the temporal context, the complex time-varying system behaviors can be revealed by the temporal modes in the proposed model. Thus, our model lays an insightful foundation for understanding complex spatiotemporal data in real-world dynamical systems. Laplacian Convolutional Representation for Traffic Time Series ImputationXinyu Chen, Zhanhong Cheng, HanQin Cai et al.
Spatiotemporal traffic data imputation is of great significance in intelligent transportation systems and data-driven decision-making processes. To perform efficient learning and accurate reconstruction from partially observed traffic data, we assert the importance of characterizing both global and local trends in time series. In the literature, substantial works have demonstrated the effectiveness of utilizing the low-rank property of traffic data by matrix/tensor completion models. In this study, we first introduce a Laplacian kernel to temporal regularization for characterizing local trends in traffic time series, which can be formulated as a circular convolution. Then, we develop a low-rank Laplacian convolutional representation (LCR) model by putting the circulant matrix nuclear norm and the Laplacian kernelized temporal regularization together, which is proved to meet a unified framework that has a fast Fourier transform (FFT) solution in log-linear time complexity. Through extensive experiments on several traffic datasets, we demonstrate the superiority of LCR over several baseline models for imputing traffic time series of various time series behaviors (e.g., data noises and strong/weak periodicity) and reconstructing sparse speed fields of vehicular traffic flow. The proposed LCR model is also an efficient solution to large-scale traffic data imputation over the existing imputation models.

Forecasting Sparse Movement Speed of Urban Road Networks with Nonstationary Temporal Matrix FactorizationXinyu Chen, Chengyuan Zhang, Xi-Le Zhao et al.
Movement speed data from urban road networks, computed from ridesharing vehicles or taxi trajectories, is often high-dimensional, sparse, and nonstationary (e.g., exhibiting seasonality). To address these challenges, we propose a Nonstationary Temporal Matrix Factorization (NoTMF) model that leverages matrix factorization to project high-dimensional and sparse movement speed data into low-dimensional latent spaces. This results in a concise formula with the multiplication between spatial and temporal factor matrices. To characterize the temporal correlations, NoTMF takes a latent equation on the seasonal differenced temporal factors using higher-order vector autoregression (VAR). This approach not only preserves the low-rank structure of sparse movement speed data but also maintains consistent temporal dynamics, including seasonality information. The learning process for NoTMF involves optimizing the spatial and temporal factor matrices along with a collection of VAR coefficient matrices. To solve this efficiently, we introduce an alternating minimization framework, which tackles a challenging procedure of estimating the temporal factor matrix using conjugate gradient method, as the subproblem involves both partially observed matrix factorization and seasonal differenced VAR. To evaluate the forecasting performance of NoTMF, we conduct extensive experiments on Uber movement speed datasets, which are estimated from ridesharing vehicle trajectories. These datasets contain a large proportion of missing values due to insufficient ridesharing vehicles on the urban road network. Despite the presence of missing data, NoTMF demonstrates superior forecasting accuracy and effectiveness compared to baseline models. Moreover, as the seasonality of movement speed data is of great concern, the experiment results highlight the significance of addressing the nonstationarity of movement speed data.

Human action recognition (HAR) in videos is one of the core tasks of video understanding. Based on video sequences, the goal is to recognize actions performed by humans. While HAR has received much attention in the visible spectrum, action recognition in infrared videos is little studied. Accurate recognition of human actions in the infrared domain is a highly challenging task because of the redundant and indistinguishable texture features present in the sequence. Furthermore, in some cases, challenges arise from the irrelevant information induced by the presence of multiple active persons not contributing to the actual action of interest. Therefore, most existing methods consider a standard paradigm that does not take into account these challenges, which is in some part due to the ambiguous definition of the recognition task in some cases. In this paper, we propose a new method that simultaneously learns to recognize efficiently human actions in the infrared spectrum, while automatically identifying the key-actors performing the action without using any prior knowledge or explicit annotations. Our method is composed of three stages. In the first stage, optical flow-based key-actor identification is performed. Then for each key-actor, we estimate key-poses that will guide the frame selection process. A scale-invariant encoding process along with embedded pose filtering are performed in order to enhance the quality of action representations. Experimental results on InfAR dataset show that our proposed model achieves promising recognition performance and learns useful action representations.

Scalable Dynamic Mixture Model with Full Covariance for Probabilistic Traffic ForecastingSeongjin Choi, Nicolas Saunier, Vincent Zhihao Zheng et al.
Deep learning-based multivariate and multistep-ahead traffic forecasting models are typically trained with the mean squared error (MSE) or mean absolute error (MAE) as the loss function in a sequence-to-sequence setting, simply assuming that the errors follow an independent and isotropic Gaussian or Laplacian distributions. However, such assumptions are often unrealistic for real-world traffic forecasting tasks, where the probabilistic distribution of spatiotemporal forecasting is very complex with strong concurrent correlations across both sensors and forecasting horizons in a time-varying manner. In this paper, we model the time-varying distribution for the matrix-variate error process as a dynamic mixture of zero-mean Gaussian distributions. To achieve efficiency, flexibility, and scalability, we parameterize each mixture component using a matrix normal distribution and allow the mixture weight to change and be predictable over time. The proposed method can be seamlessly integrated into existing deep-learning frameworks with only a few additional parameters to be learned. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method on a traffic speed forecasting task and find that our method not only improves model performance but also provides interpretable spatiotemporal correlation structures.

Detection of Autonomous Shuttles in Urban Traffic Images Using Adaptive Residual ContextMohamed Aziz Younes, Nicolas Saunier, Guillaume-Alexandre Bilodeau
The progressive automation of transport promises to enhance safety and sustainability through shared mobility. Like other vehicles and road users, and even more so for such a new technology, it requires monitoring to understand how it interacts in traffic and to evaluate its safety. This can be done with fixed cameras and video object detection. However, the addition of new detection targets generally requires a fine-tuning approach for regular detection methods. Unfortunately, this implementation strategy will lead to a phenomenon known as catastrophic forgetting, which causes a degradation in scene understanding. In road safety applications, preserving contextual scene knowledge is of the utmost importance for protecting road users. We introduce the Adaptive Residual Context (ARC) architecture to address this. ARC links a frozen context branch and trainable task-specific branches through a Context-Guided Bridge, utilizing attention to transfer spatial features while preserving pre-trained representations. Experiments on a custom dataset show that ARC matches fine-tuned baselines while significantly improving knowledge retention, offering a data-efficient solution to add new vehicle categories for complex urban environments.

PMMA: The Polytechnique Montreal Mobility Aids DatasetQingwu Liu, Nicolas Saunier, Guillaume-Alexandre Bilodeau
This study introduces a new object detection dataset of pedestrians using mobility aids, named PMMA. The dataset was collected in an outdoor environment, where volunteers used wheelchairs, canes, and walkers, resulting in nine categories of pedestrians: pedestrians, cane users, two types of walker users, whether walking or resting, five types of wheelchair users, including wheelchair users, people pushing empty wheelchairs, and three types of users pushing occupied wheelchairs, including the entire pushing group, the pusher and the person seated on the wheelchair. To establish a benchmark, seven object detection models (Faster R-CNN, CenterNet, YOLOX, DETR, Deformable DETR, DINO, and RT-DETR) and three tracking algorithms (ByteTrack, BOT-SORT, and OC-SORT) were implemented under the MMDetection framework. Experimental results show that YOLOX, Deformable DETR, and Faster R-CNN achieve the best detection performance, while the differences among the three trackers are relatively small. PolyTrack: Tracking with Bounding PolygonsGaspar Faure, Hughes Perreault, Guillaume-Alexandre Bilodeau et al.
In this paper, we present a novel method called PolyTrack for fast multi-object tracking and segmentation using bounding polygons. Polytrack detects objects by producing heatmaps of their center keypoint. For each of them, a rough segmentation is done by computing a bounding polygon over each instance instead of the traditional bounding box. Tracking is done by taking two consecutive frames as input and computing a center offset for each object detected in the first frame to predict its location in the second frame. A Kalman filter is also applied to reduce the number of ID switches. Since our target application is automated driving systems, we apply our method on urban environment videos. We trained and evaluated PolyTrack on the MOTS and KITTIMOTS datasets. Results show that tracking polygons can be a good alternative to bounding box and mask tracking. FFAVOD: Feature Fusion Architecture for Video Object DetectionHughes Perreault, Guillaume-Alexandre Bilodeau, Nicolas Saunier et al.
A significant amount of redundancy exists between consecutive frames of a video. Object detectors typically produce detections for one image at a time, without any capabilities for taking advantage of this redundancy. Meanwhile, many applications for object detection work with videos, including intelligent transportation systems, advanced driver assistance systems and video surveillance. Our work aims at taking advantage of the similarity between video frames to produce better detections. We propose FFAVOD, standing for feature fusion architecture for video object detection. We first introduce a novel video object detection architecture that allows a network to share feature maps between nearby frames. Second, we propose a feature fusion module that learns to merge feature maps to enhance them. We show that using the proposed architecture and the fusion module can improve the performance of three base object detectors on two object detection benchmarks containing sequences of moving road users. Additionally, to further increase performance, we propose an improvement to the SpotNet attention module. Using our architecture on the improved SpotNet detector, we obtain the state-of-the-art performance on the UA-DETRAC public benchmark as well as on the UAVDT dataset. CenterPoly: real-time instance segmentation using bounding polygonsHughes Perreault, Guillaume-Alexandre Bilodeau, Nicolas Saunier et al.
We present a novel method, called CenterPoly, for real-time instance segmentation using bounding polygons. We apply it to detect road users in dense urban environments, making it suitable for applications in intelligent transportation systems like automated vehicles. CenterPoly detects objects by their center keypoint while predicting a fixed number of polygon vertices for each object, thus performing detection and segmentation in parallel. Most of the network parameters are shared by the network heads, making it fast and lightweight enough to run at real-time speed. To properly convert mask ground-truth to polygon ground-truth, we designed a vertex selection strategy to facilitate the learning of the polygons. Additionally, to better segment overlapping objects in dense urban scenes, we also train a relative depth branch to determine which instances are closer and which are further, using available weak annotations. We propose several models with different backbones to show the possible speed / accuracy trade-offs. The models were trained and evaluated on Cityscapes, KITTI and IDD and the results are reported on their public benchmark, which are state-of-the-art at real-time speeds. Learning Data Association for Multi-Object Tracking using Only CoordinatesMehdi Miah, Guillaume-Alexandre Bilodeau, Nicolas Saunier
We propose a novel Transformer-based module to address the data association problem for multi-object tracking. From detections obtained by a pretrained detector, this module uses only coordinates from bounding boxes to estimate an affinity score between pairs of tracks extracted from two distinct temporal windows. This module, named TWiX, is trained on sets of tracks with the objective of discriminating pairs of tracks coming from the same object from those which are not. Our module does not use the intersection over union measure, nor does it requires any motion priors or any camera motion compensation technique. By inserting TWiX within an online cascade matching pipeline, our tracker C-TWiX achieves state-of-the-art performance on the DanceTrack and KITTIMOT datasets, and gets competitive results on the MOT17 dataset. Detection of Micromobility Vehicles in Urban Traffic VideosKhalil Sabri, Célia Djilali, Guillaume-Alexandre Bilodeau et al.
Urban traffic environments present unique challenges for object detection, particularly with the increasing presence of micromobility vehicles like e-scooters and bikes. To address this object detection problem, this work introduces an adapted detection model that combines the accuracy and speed of single-frame object detection with the richer features offered by video object detection frameworks. This is done by applying aggregated feature maps from consecutive frames processed through motion flow to the YOLOX architecture. This fusion brings a temporal perspective to YOLOX detection abilities, allowing for a better understanding of urban mobility patterns and substantially improving detection reliability. Tested on a custom dataset curated for urban micromobility scenarios, our model showcases substantial improvement over existing state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating the need to consider spatio-temporal information for detecting such small and thin objects. Our approach enhances detection in challenging conditions, including occlusions, ensuring temporal consistency, and effectively mitigating motion blur.

Measuring the State of Open Science in Transportation Using Large Language ModelsJunyi Ji, Ruth Lu, Linda Belkessa et al.
Open science initiatives have strengthened scientific integrity and accelerated research progress across many fields, but the state of their practice within transportation research remains under-investigated. Key features of open science, defined here as data and code availability, are difficult to extract due to the inherent complexity of the field. Previous work has either been limited to small-scale studies due to the labor-intensive nature of manual analysis or has relied on large-scale bibliometric approaches that sacrifice contextual richness. This paper introduces an automatic and scalable feature-extraction pipeline to measure data and code availability in transportation research. We employ Large Language Models (LLMs) for this task and validate their performance against a manually curated dataset and through an inter-rater agreement analysis. We applied this pipeline to examine 10,724 research articles published in the Transportation Research Part series of journals between 2019 and 2024. Our analysis found that only 5% of quantitative papers shared a code repository, 4% of quantitative papers shared a data repository, and about 3% of papers shared both, with trends differing across journals, topics, and geographic regions. We found no significant difference in citation counts or review duration between papers that provided data and code and those that did not, suggesting a misalignment between open science efforts and traditional academic metrics. Consequently, encouraging these practices will likely require structural interventions from journals and funding agencies to supplement the lack of direct author incentives. The pipeline developed in this study can be readily scaled to other journals, representing a critical step toward the automated measurement and monitoring of open science practices in transportation research.

How good are deep learning methods for automated road safety analysis using video data? An experimental studyQingwu Liu, Nicolas Saunier, Guillaume-Alexandre Bilodeau
Image-based multi-object detection (MOD) and multi-object tracking (MOT) are advancing at a fast pace. A variety of 2D and 3D MOD and MOT methods have been developed for monocular and stereo cameras. Road safety analysis can benefit from those advancements. As crashes are rare events, surrogate measures of safety (SMoS) have been developed for safety analyses. (Semi-)Automated safety analysis methods extract road user trajectories to compute safety indicators, for example, Time-to-Collision (TTC) and Post-encroachment Time (PET). Inspired by the success of deep learning in MOD and MOT, we investigate three MOT methods, including one based on a stereo-camera, using the annotated KITTI traffic video dataset. Two post-processing steps, IDsplit and SS, are developed to improve the tracking results and investigate the factors influencing the TTC. The experimental results show that, despite some advantages in terms of the numbers of interactions or similarity to the TTC distributions, all the tested methods systematically over-estimate the number of interactions and under-estimate the TTC: they report more interactions and more severe interactions, making the road user interactions appear less safe than they are. Further efforts will be directed towards testing more methods and more data, in particular from roadside sensors, to verify the results and improve the performance.

Trajectory Clustering Performance Evaluation: If we know the answer, it's not clusteringMohsen Rezaie, Nicolas Saunier
Advancements in Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) have made huge amounts of traffic data available through automatic data collection. A big part of this data is stored as trajectories of moving vehicles and road users. Automatic analysis of this data with minimal human supervision would both lower the costs and eliminate subjectivity of the analysis. Trajectory clustering is an unsupervised task. In this paper, we perform a comprehensive comparison of similarity measures, clustering algorithms and evaluation measures using trajectory data from seven intersections. We also propose a method to automatically generate trajectory reference clusters based on their origin and destination points to be used for label-based evaluation measures. Therefore, the entire procedure remains unsupervised both in clustering and evaluation levels. Finally, we use a combination of evaluation measures to find the top performing similarity measures and clustering algorithms for each intersection. The results show that there is no single combination of distance and clustering algorithm that is always among the top ten clustering setups.

Multi-Object Tracking and Segmentation with a Space-Time Memory NetworkMehdi Miah, Guillaume-Alexandre Bilodeau, Nicolas Saunier
We propose a method for multi-object tracking and segmentation based on a novel memory-based mechanism to associate tracklets. The proposed tracker, MeNToS, addresses particularly the long-term data association problem, when objects are not observable for long time intervals. Indeed, the recently introduced HOTA metric (High Order Tracking Accuracy), which has a better alignment than the formerly established MOTA (Multiple Object Tracking Accuracy) with the human visual assessment of tracking, has shown that improvements are still needed for data association, despite the recent improvement in object detection. In MeNToS, after creating tracklets using instance segmentation and optical flow, the proposed method relies on a space-time memory network originally developed for one-shot video object segmentation to improve the association of sequence of detections (tracklets) with temporal gaps. We evaluate our tracker on KITTIMOTS and MOTSChallenge and we show the benefit of our data association strategy with the HOTA metric. Additional ablation studies demonstrate that our approach using a space-time memory network gives better and more robust long-term association than those based on a re-identification network. The proposed method addresses particularly the data association problem. Indeed, the recently introduced HOTA metric, that has a better alignment with the human visual assessment by evenly balancing detections and associations quality, has shown that improvements are still needed for data association. After creating tracklets using instance segmentation and optical flow, the proposed method relies on a space-time memory network (STM) developed for one-shot video object segmentation to improve the association of tracklets with temporal gaps. To the best of our knowledge, our method, named MeNToS, is the first to use the STM network to track object masks for MOTS. We took the 4th place in the RobMOTS challenge. Soft Attention: Does it Actually Help to Learn Social Interactions in Pedestrian Trajectory Prediction?Laurent Boucaud, Daniel Aloise, Nicolas Saunier
We consider the problem of predicting the future path of a pedestrian using its motion history and the motion history of the surrounding pedestrians, called social information. Since the seminal paper on Social-LSTM, deep-learning has become the main tool used to model the impact of social interactions on a pedestrian's motion. The demonstration that these models can learn social interactions relies on an ablative study of these models. The models are compared with and without their social interactions module on two standard metrics, the Average Displacement Error and Final Displacement Error. Yet, these complex models were recently outperformed by a simple constant-velocity approach. This questions if they actually allow to model social interactions as well as the validity of the proof. In this paper, we focus on the deep-learning models with a soft-attention mechanism for social interaction modeling and study whether they use social information at prediction time. We conduct two experiments across four state-of-the-art approaches on the ETH and UCY datasets, which were also used in previous work. First, the models are trained by replacing the social information with random noise and compared to model trained with actual social information. Second, we use a gating mechanism along with a $L_0$ penalty, allowing models to shut down their inner components. The models consistently learn to prune their soft-attention mechanism. For both experiments, neither the course of the convergence nor the prediction performance were altered. This demonstrates that the soft-attention mechanism and therefore the social information are ignored by the models.

Low-Rank Autoregressive Tensor Completion for Spatiotemporal Traffic Data ImputationXinyu Chen, Mengying Lei, Nicolas Saunier et al.
Spatiotemporal traffic time series (e.g., traffic volume/speed) collected from sensing systems are often incomplete with considerable corruption and large amounts of missing values, preventing users from harnessing the full power of the data. Missing data imputation has been a long-standing research topic and critical application for real-world intelligent transportation systems. A widely applied imputation method is low-rank matrix/tensor completion; however, the low-rank assumption only preserves the global structure while ignores the strong local consistency in spatiotemporal data. In this paper, we propose a low-rank autoregressive tensor completion (LATC) framework by introducing \textit{temporal variation} as a new regularization term into the completion of a third-order (sensor $\times$ time of day $\times$ day) tensor. The third-order tensor structure allows us to better capture the global consistency of traffic data, such as the inherent seasonality and day-to-day similarity. To achieve local consistency, we design the temporal variation by imposing an AR($p$) model for each time series with coefficients as learnable parameters. Different from previous spatial and temporal regularization schemes, the minimization of temporal variation can better characterize temporal generative mechanisms beyond local smoothness, allowing us to deal with more challenging scenarios such "blackout" missing. To solve the optimization problem in LATC, we introduce an alternating minimization scheme that estimates the low-rank tensor and autoregressive coefficients iteratively. We conduct extensive numerical experiments on several real-world traffic data sets, and our results demonstrate the effectiveness of LATC in diverse missing scenarios.

Human action recognition (HAR) in videos is a fundamental research topic in computer vision. It consists mainly in understanding actions performed by humans based on a sequence of visual observations. In recent years, HAR have witnessed significant progress, especially with the emergence of deep learning models. However, most of existing approaches for action recognition rely on information that is not always relevant for this task, and are limited in the way they fuse the temporal information. In this paper, we propose a novel method for human action recognition that encodes efficiently the most discriminative appearance information of an action with explicit attention on representative pose features, into a new compact grid representation. Our GRAR (Grid-based Representation for Action Recognition) method is tested on several benchmark datasets demonstrating that our model can accurately recognize human actions, despite intra-class appearance variations and occlusion challenges.

An Empirical Analysis of Visual Features for Multiple Object Tracking in Urban ScenesMehdi Miah, Justine Pepin, Nicolas Saunier et al.
This paper addresses the problem of selecting appearance features for multiple object tracking (MOT) in urban scenes. Over the years, a large number of features has been used for MOT. However, it is not clear whether some of them are better than others. Commonly used features are color histograms, histograms of oriented gradients, deep features from convolutional neural networks and re-identification (ReID) features. In this study, we assess how good these features are at discriminating objects enclosed by a bounding box in urban scene tracking scenarios. Several affinity measures, namely the $\mathrm{L}_1$, $\mathrm{L}_2$ and the Bhattacharyya distances, Rank-1 counts and the cosine similarity, are also assessed for their impact on the discriminative power of the features. Results on several datasets show that features from ReID networks are the best for discriminating instances from one another regardless of the quality of the detector. If a ReID model is not available, color histograms may be selected if the detector has a good recall and there are few occlusions; otherwise, deep features are more robust to detectors with lower recall. Scalable Low-Rank Tensor Learning for Spatiotemporal Traffic Data ImputationXinyu Chen, Yixian Chen, Nicolas Saunier et al.
Missing value problem in spatiotemporal traffic data has long been a challenging topic, in particular for large-scale and high-dimensional data with complex missing mechanisms and diverse degrees of missingness. Recent studies based on tensor nuclear norm have demonstrated the superiority of tensor learning in imputation tasks by effectively characterizing the complex correlations/dependencies in spatiotemporal data. However, despite the promising results, these approaches do not scale well to large data tensors. In this paper, we focus on addressing the missing data imputation problem for large-scale spatiotemporal traffic data. To achieve both high accuracy and efficiency, we develop a scalable tensor learning model -- Low-Tubal-Rank Smoothing Tensor Completion (LSTC-Tubal) -- based on the existing framework of Low-Rank Tensor Completion, which is well-suited for spatiotemporal traffic data that is characterized by multidimensional structure of location$\times$ time of day $\times$ day. In particular, the proposed LSTC-Tubal model involves a scalable tensor nuclear norm minimization scheme by integrating linear unitary transformation. Therefore, tensor nuclear norm minimization can be solved by singular value thresholding on the transformed matrix of each day while the day-to-day correlation can be effectively preserved by the unitary transform matrix. We compare LSTC-Tubal with state-of-the-art baseline models, and find that LSTC-Tubal can achieve competitive accuracy with a significantly lower computational cost. In addition, the LSTC-Tubal will also benefit other tasks in modeling large-scale spatiotemporal traffic data, such as network-level traffic forecasting.

Supervised and Unsupervised Detections for Multiple Object Tracking in Traffic Scenes: A Comparative StudyHui-Lee Ooi, Guillaume-Alexandre Bilodeau, Nicolas Saunier
In this paper, we propose a multiple object tracker, called MF-Tracker, that integrates multiple classical features (spatial distances and colours) and modern features (detection labels and re-identification features) in its tracking framework. Since our tracker can work with detections coming either from unsupervised and supervised object detectors, we also investigated the impact of supervised and unsupervised detection inputs in our method and for tracking road users in general. We also compared our results with existing methods that were applied on the UA-Detrac and the UrbanTracker datasets. Results show that our proposed method is performing very well in both datasets with different inputs (MOTA ranging from 0:3491 to 0:5805 for unsupervised inputs on the UrbanTracker dataset and an average MOTA of 0:7638 for supervised inputs on the UA Detrac dataset) under different circumstances. A well-trained supervised object detector can give better results in challenging scenarios. However, in simpler scenarios, if good training data is not available, unsupervised method can perform well and can be a good alternative.

RN-VID: A Feature Fusion Architecture for Video Object DetectionHughes Perreault, Maguelonne Héritier, Pierre Gravel et al.
Consecutive frames in a video are highly redundant. Therefore, to perform the task of video object detection, executing single frame detectors on every frame without reusing any information is quite wasteful. It is with this idea in mind that we propose RN-VID (standing for RetinaNet-VIDeo), a novel approach to video object detection. Our contributions are twofold. First, we propose a new architecture that allows the usage of information from nearby frames to enhance feature maps. Second, we propose a novel module to merge feature maps of same dimensions using re-ordering of channels and 1 x 1 convolutions. We then demonstrate that RN-VID achieves better mean average precision (mAP) than corresponding single frame detectors with little additional cost during inference.

SpotNet: Self-Attention Multi-Task Network for Object DetectionHughes Perreault, Guillaume-Alexandre Bilodeau, Nicolas Saunier et al.
Humans are very good at directing their visual attention toward relevant areas when they search for different types of objects. For instance, when we search for cars, we will look at the streets, not at the top of buildings. The motivation of this paper is to train a network to do the same via a multi-task learning approach. To train visual attention, we produce foreground/background segmentation labels in a semi-supervised way, using background subtraction or optical flow. Using these labels, we train an object detection model to produce foreground/background segmentation maps as well as bounding boxes while sharing most model parameters. We use those segmentation maps inside the network as a self-attention mechanism to weight the feature map used to produce the bounding boxes, decreasing the signal of non-relevant areas. We show that by using this method, we obtain a significant mAP improvement on two traffic surveillance datasets, with state-of-the-art results on both UA-DETRAC and UAVDT.

Autocamera Calibration for traffic surveillance cameras with wide angle lensesAman Gajendra Jain, Nicolas Saunier
We propose a method for automatic calibration of a traffic surveillance camera with wide-angle lenses. Video footage of a few minutes is sufficient for the entire calibration process to take place. This method takes in the height of the camera from the ground plane as the only user input to overcome the scale ambiguity. The calibration is performed in two stages, 1. Intrinsic Calibration 2. Extrinsic Calibration. Intrinsic calibration is achieved by assuming an equidistant fisheye distortion and an ideal camera model. Extrinsic calibration is accomplished by estimating the two vanishing points, on the ground plane, from the motion of vehicles at perpendicular intersections. The first stage of intrinsic calibration is also valid for thermal cameras. Experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach on visible as well as thermal cameras. In this paper, we propose to combine detections from background subtraction and from a multiclass object detector for multiple object tracking (MOT) in urban traffic scenes. These objects are associated across frames using spatial, colour and class label information, and trajectory prediction is evaluated to yield the final MOT outputs. The proposed method was tested on the Urban tracker dataset and shows competitive performances compared to state-of-the-art approaches. Results show that the integration of different detection inputs remains a challenging task that greatly affects the MOT performance.

Successive frames of a video are highly redundant, and the most popular object detection methods do not take advantage of this fact. Using multiple consecutive frames can improve detection of small objects or difficult examples and can improve speed and detection consistency in a video sequence, for instance by interpolating features between frames. In this work, a novel approach is introduced to perform online video object detection using two consecutive frames of video sequences involving road users. Two new models, RetinaNet-Double and RetinaNet-Flow, are proposed, based respectively on the concatenation of a target frame with a preceding frame, and the concatenation of the optical flow with the target frame. The models are trained and evaluated on three public datasets. Experiments show that using a preceding frame improves performance over single frame detectors, but using explicit optical flow usually does not.

Multiple object tracking (MOT) in urban traffic aims to produce the trajectories of the different road users that move across the field of view with different directions and speeds and that can have varying appearances and sizes. Occlusions and interactions among the different objects are expected and common due to the nature of urban road traffic. In this work, a tracking framework employing classification label information from a deep learning detection approach is used for associating the different objects, in addition to object position and appearances. We want to investigate the performance of a modern multiclass object detector for the MOT task in traffic scenes. Results show that the object labels improve tracking performance, but that the output of object detectors are not always reliable.

Improving Multiple Object Tracking with Optical Flow and Edge PreprocessingDavid-Alexandre Beaupré, Guillaume-Alexandre Bilodeau, Nicolas Saunier
In this paper, we present a new method for detecting road users in an urban environment which leads to an improvement in multiple object tracking. Our method takes as an input a foreground image and improves the object detection and segmentation. This new image can be used as an input to trackers that use foreground blobs from background subtraction. The first step is to create foreground images for all the frames in an urban video. Then, starting from the original blobs of the foreground image, we merge the blobs that are close to one another and that have similar optical flow. The next step is extracting the edges of the different objects to detect multiple objects that might be very close (and be merged in the same blob) and to adjust the size of the original blobs. At the same time, we use the optical flow to detect occlusion of objects that are moving in opposite directions. Finally, we make a decision on which information we keep in order to construct a new foreground image with blobs that can be used for tracking. The system is validated on four videos of an urban traffic dataset. Our method improves the recall and precision metrics for the object detection task compared to the vanilla background subtraction method and improves the CLEAR MOT metrics in the tracking tasks for most videos.

We present a novel approach to background subtraction that is based on the local shape of small image regions. In our approach, an image region centered on a pixel is mod-eled using the local self-similarity descriptor. We aim at obtaining a reliable change detection based on local shape change in an image when foreground objects are moving. The method first builds a background model and compares the local self-similarities between the background model and the subsequent frames to distinguish background and foreground objects. Post-processing is then used to refine the boundaries of moving objects. Results show that this approach is promising as the foregrounds obtained are com-plete, although they often include shadows.
