Retrieval-based Knowledge Augmented Vision Language Pre-training

Jiahua Rao, Zifei Shan, Longpo Liu et al.

With the recent progress in large-scale vision and language representation learning, Vision Language Pre-training (VLP) models have achieved promising improvements on various multi-modal downstream tasks. Albeit powerful, these models have not fully leveraged world knowledge to their advantage. A key challenge of knowledge-augmented VLP is the lack of clear connections between knowledge and multi-modal data. Moreover, not all knowledge present in images/texts is useful, therefore prior approaches often struggle to effectively integrate knowledge, visual, and textual information. In this study, we propose REtrieval-based knowledge Augmented Vision Language (REAVL), a novel knowledge-augmented pre-training framework to address the above issues. For the first time, we introduce a knowledge-aware self-supervised learning scheme that efficiently establishes the correspondence between knowledge and multi-modal data and identifies informative knowledge to improve the modeling of alignment and interactions between visual and textual modalities. By adaptively integrating informative knowledge with visual and textual information, REAVL achieves new state-of-the-art performance uniformly on knowledge-based vision-language understanding and multi-modal entity linking tasks, as well as competitive results on general vision-language tasks while only using 0.2% pre-training data of the best models. Our model shows strong sample efficiency and effective knowledge utilization.

Towards High-Order Complementary Recommendation via Logical Reasoning Network

Longfeng Wu, Yao Zhou, Dawei Zhou

Complementary recommendation gains increasing attention in e-commerce since it expedites the process of finding frequently-bought-with products for users in their shopping journey. Therefore, learning the product representation that can reflect this complementary relationship plays a central role in modern recommender systems. In this work, we propose a logical reasoning network, LOGIREC, to effectively learn embeddings of products as well as various transformations (projection, intersection, negation) between them. LOGIREC is capable of capturing the asymmetric complementary relationship between products and seamlessly extending to high-order recommendations where more comprehensive and meaningful complementary relationship is learned for a query set of products. Finally, we further propose a hybrid network that is jointly optimized for learning a more generic product representation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our LOGIREC on multiple public real-world datasets in terms of various ranking-based metrics under both low-order and high-order recommendation scenarios.

Manga Generation via Layout-controllable Diffusion

Siyu Chen, Dengjie Li, Zenghao Bao et al.

Generating comics through text is widely studied. However, there are few studies on generating multi-panel Manga (Japanese comics) solely based on plain text. Japanese manga contains multiple panels on a single page, with characteristics such as coherence in storytelling, reasonable and diverse page layouts, consistency in characters, and semantic correspondence between panel drawings and panel scripts. Therefore, generating manga poses a significant challenge. This paper presents the manga generation task and constructs the Manga109Story dataset for studying manga generation solely from plain text. Additionally, we propose MangaDiffusion to facilitate the intra-panel and inter-panel information interaction during the manga generation process. The results show that our method particularly ensures the number of panels, reasonable and diverse page layouts. Based on our approach, there is potential to converting a large amount of textual stories into more engaging manga readings, leading to significant application prospects.

CASTELO: Clustered Atom Subtypes aidEd Lead Optimization -- a combined machine learning and molecular modeling method

Leili Zhang, Giacomo Domeniconi, Chih-Chieh Yang et al.

Drug discovery is a multi-stage process that comprises two costly major steps: pre-clinical research and clinical trials. Among its stages, lead optimization easily consumes more than half of the pre-clinical budget. We propose a combined machine learning and molecular modeling approach that automates lead optimization workflow \textit{in silico}. The initial data collection is achieved with physics-based molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Contact matrices are calculated as the preliminary features extracted from the simulations. To take advantage of the temporal information from the simulations, we enhanced contact matrices data with temporal dynamism representation, which are then modeled with unsupervised convolutional variational autoencoder (CVAE). Finally, conventional clustering method and CVAE-based clustering method are compared with metrics to rank the submolecular structures and propose potential candidates for lead optimization. With no need for extensive structure-activity relationship database, our method provides new hints for drug modification hotspots which can be used to improve drug efficacy. Our workflow can potentially reduce the lead optimization turnaround time from months/years to days compared with the conventional labor-intensive process and thus can potentially become a valuable tool for medical researchers.
