Hadamard Attention Recurrent Transformer: A Strong Baseline for Stereo Matching Transformer

Ziyang Chen, Wenting Li, Yongjun Zhang et al.

Constrained by the low-rank bottleneck inherent in attention mechanisms, current stereo matching transformers suffer from limited nonlinear expressivity, which renders their feature representations sensitive to challenging conditions such as reflections. To overcome this difficulty, we present the Hadamard Attention Recurrent Stereo Transformer (HART). HART includes a novel attention mechanism that incorporates the following components: 1) The Dense Attention Kernel (DAK) maps the attention weight distribution into a high-dimensional space over (0, +$\infty$). By removing the upper bound constraint on attention weights, DAK enables more flexible modeling of complex feature interactions. This reduces feature collinearity. 2) The Multi Kernel & Order Interaction (MKOI) module extends the attention mechanism by unifying semantic and spatial knowledge learning. This integration improves the ability of HART to learn features in binocular images. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our HART. In reflective area, HART ranked 1st on the KITTI 2012 benchmark among all published methods at the time of submission. Code is available at https://github.com/ZYangChen/HART.

Probing the Critical Point (CritPt) of AI Reasoning: a Frontier Physics Research Benchmark

Minhui Zhu, Minyang Tian, Xiaocheng Yang et al.

While large language models (LLMs) with reasoning capabilities are progressing rapidly on high-school math competitions and coding, can they reason effectively through complex, open-ended challenges found in frontier physics research? And crucially, what kinds of reasoning tasks do physicists want LLMs to assist with? To address these questions, we present the CritPt (Complex Research using Integrated Thinking - Physics Test, pronounced "critical point"), the first benchmark designed to test LLMs on unpublished, research-level reasoning tasks that broadly covers modern physics research areas, including condensed matter, quantum physics, atomic, molecular & optical physics, astrophysics, high energy physics, mathematical physics, statistical physics, nuclear physics, nonlinear dynamics, fluid dynamics and biophysics. CritPt consists of 71 composite research challenges designed to simulate full-scale research projects at the entry level, which are also decomposed to 190 simpler checkpoint tasks for more fine-grained insights. All problems are newly created by 50+ active physics researchers based on their own research. Every problem is hand-curated to admit a guess-resistant and machine-verifiable answer and is evaluated by an automated grading pipeline heavily customized for advanced physics-specific output formats. We find that while current state-of-the-art LLMs show early promise on isolated checkpoints, they remain far from being able to reliably solve full research-scale challenges: the best average accuracy among base models is only 5.7%, achieved by GPT-5 (high), moderately rising to around 10% when equipped with coding tools. Through the realistic yet standardized evaluation offered by CritPt, we highlight a large disconnect between current model capabilities and realistic physics research demands, offering a foundation to guide the development of scientifically grounded AI tools.

Automatic Classification and Segmentation of Tunnel Cracks Based on Deep Learning and Visual Explanations

Yong Feng, Xiaolei Zhang, Shijin Feng et al.

Tunnel lining crack is a crucial indicator of tunnels' safety status. Aiming to classify and segment tunnel cracks with enhanced accuracy and efficiency, this study proposes a two-step deep learning-based method. An automatic tunnel image classification model is developed using the DenseNet-169 in the first step. The proposed crack segmentation model in the second step is based on the DeepLabV3+, whose internal logic is evaluated via a score-weighted visual explanation technique. Proposed method combines tunnel image classification and segmentation together, so that the selected images containing cracks from the first step are segmented in the second step to improve the detection accuracy and efficiency. The superior performances of the two-step method are validated by experiments. The results show that the accuracy and frames per second (FPS) of the tunnel crack classification model are 92.23% and 39.80, respectively, which are higher than other convolutional neural networks (CNN) based and Transformer based models. Also, the intersection over union (IoU) and F1 score of the tunnel crack segmentation model are 57.01% and 67.44%, respectively, outperforming other state-of-the-art models. Moreover, the provided visual explanations in this study are conducive to understanding the "black box" of deep learning-based models. The developed two-stage deep learning-based method integrating visual explanations provides a basis for fast and accurate quantitative assessment of tunnel health status.

End-to-End Learning of Multi-scale Convolutional Neural Network for Stereo Matching

Li Zhang, Quanhong Wang, Haihua Lu et al.

Deep neural networks have shown excellent performance in stereo matching task. Recently CNN-based methods have shown that stereo matching can be formulated as a supervised learning task. However, less attention is paid on the fusion of contextual semantic information and details. To tackle this problem, we propose a network for disparity estimation based on abundant contextual details and semantic information, called Multi-scale Features Network (MSFNet). First, we design a new structure to encode rich semantic information and fine-grained details by fusing multi-scale features. And we combine the advantages of element-wise addition and concatenation, which is conducive to merge semantic information with details. Second, a guidance mechanism is introduced to guide the network to automatically focus more on the unreliable regions. Third, we formulate the consistency check as an error map, obtained by the low stage features with fine-grained details. Finally, we adopt the consistency checking between the left feature and the synthetic left feature to refine the initial disparity. Experiments on Scene Flow and KITTI 2015 benchmark demonstrated that the proposed method can achieve the state-of-the-art performance.

ComplexFace: a Multi-Representation Approach for Image Classification with Small Dataset

Guiying Zhang, Yuxin Cui, Yong Zhao et al.

State-of-the-art face recognition algorithms are able to achieve good performance when sufficient training images are provided. Unfortunately, the number of facial images is limited in some real face recognition applications. In this paper, we propose ComplexFace, a novel and effective algorithm for face recognition with limited samples using complex number based data augmentation. The algorithm first generates new representations from original samples and then fuse both into complex numbers, which avoids the difficulty of weight setting in other fusion approaches. A test sample can then be expressed by the linear combination of all the training samples, which mapped the sample to the new representation space for classification by the kernel function. The collaborative representation based classifier is then built to make predictions. Extensive experiments on the Georgia Tech (GT) face database and the ORL face database show that our algorithm significantly outperforms existing methods: the average errors of previous approaches ranging from 31.66% to 41.75% are reduced to 14.54% over the GT database; the average errors of previous approaches ranging from 5.21% to 10.99% are reduced to 1.67% over the ORL database. In other words, our algorithm has decreased the average errors by up to 84.80% on the ORL database.

Cascaded multi-scale and multi-dimension convolutional neural network for stereo matching

Haihua Lu, Hai Xu, Li Zhang et al.

Convolutional neural networks(CNN) have been shown to perform better than the conventional stereo algorithms for stereo estimation. Numerous efforts focus on the pixel-wise matching cost computation, which is the important building block for many start-of-the-art algorithms. However, those architectures are limited to small and single scale receptive fields and use traditional methods for cost aggregation or even ignore cost aggregation. Differently we take them both into consideration. Firstly, we propose a new multi-scale matching cost computation sub-network, in which two different sizes of receptive fields are implemented parallelly. In this way, the network can make the best use of both variants and balance the trade-off between the increase of receptive field and the loss of detail. Furthermore, we show that our multi-dimension aggregation sub-network which containing 2D convolution and 3D convolution operations can provide rich context and semantic information for estimating an accurate initial disparity. Finally, experiments on challenging stereo benchmark KITTI demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve competitive results even without any additional post-processing.

Kernalised Multi-resolution Convnet for Visual Tracking

Di Wu, Wenbin Zou, Xia Li et al.

Visual tracking is intrinsically a temporal problem. Discriminative Correlation Filters (DCF) have demonstrated excellent performance for high-speed generic visual object tracking. Built upon their seminal work, there has been a plethora of recent improvements relying on convolutional neural network (CNN) pretrained on ImageNet as a feature extractor for visual tracking. However, most of their works relying on ad hoc analysis to design the weights for different layers either using boosting or hedging techniques as an ensemble tracker. In this paper, we go beyond the conventional DCF framework and propose a Kernalised Multi-resolution Convnet (KMC) formulation that utilises hierarchical response maps to directly output the target movement. When directly deployed the learnt network to predict the unseen challenging UAV tracking dataset without any weight adjustment, the proposed model consistently achieves excellent tracking performance. Moreover, the transfered multi-reslution CNN renders it possible to be integrated into the RNN temporal learning framework, therefore opening the door on the end-to-end temporal deep learning (TDL) for visual tracking.
