Delineating hierarchical activity space from high-resolution urban mobility flows

Current studies on activity space are limited by the conceptualization of absolute physical space that fails to consider the heterogeneity of relational spaces reconstructed from spatial interactions of human movements between locations and falls short in incorporating the inherent hierarchical property of human mobility. Consequently, these approaches cannot faithfully reflect how people interact with urban spaces through travels. From the lens of relational space, this study proposes the new Hierarchical Activity Region Model (HARM) to derive the space and hierarchical properties of activity spaces perceived by various urban groups. We demonstrate the enhanced validity of our model on travel behavior in Manhattan, New York City, before, during, and after Hurricane Sandy on the basis of taxi data. Empirical results show that intra-urban travel retains clear hierarchical organization, even under disruption of a major weather event. Yet, travel undergoes a compression effect in travel hierarchies, characterized by fewer hierarchical levels and enlarged characteristic scales, followed by a rebound. Clustering the derived hierarchies reveals pronounced heterogeneity that stems from differences in population profiles; some groups sustain deeper structures or recover quickly, while others experience a persistent loss of levels. This study provides valuable insights into the functional hierarchies of urban mobility, which could inform more sustainable, resilient and equitable urban planning. The proposed methodological framework is generic for studying human mobility in broader contexts.

Uncovering inequalities in new knowledge learning by large language models across different languages

As large language models (LLMs) gradually become integral tools for problem solving in daily life worldwide, understanding linguistic inequality is becoming increasingly important. Existing research has primarily focused on static analyses that assess the disparities in the existing knowledge and capabilities of LLMs across languages. However, LLMs are continuously evolving, acquiring new knowledge to generate up-to-date, domain-specific responses. Investigating linguistic inequalities within this dynamic process is, therefore, also essential. In this paper, we explore inequalities in new knowledge learning by LLMs across different languages and four key dimensions: effectiveness, transferability, prioritization, and robustness. Through extensive experiments under two settings (in-context learning and fine-tuning) using both proprietary and open-source models, we demonstrate that low-resource languages consistently face disadvantages across all four dimensions. By shedding light on these disparities, we aim to raise awareness of linguistic inequalities in LLMs' new knowledge learning, fostering the development of more inclusive and equitable future LLMs.

PlanGPT: Enhancing Urban Planning with Tailored Language Model and Efficient Retrieval

In the field of urban planning, general-purpose large language models often struggle to meet the specific needs of planners. Tasks like generating urban planning texts, retrieving related information, and evaluating planning documents pose unique challenges. To enhance the efficiency of urban professionals and overcome these obstacles, we introduce PlanGPT, the first specialized Large Language Model tailored for urban and spatial planning. Developed through collaborative efforts with institutions like the Chinese Academy of Urban Planning, PlanGPT leverages a customized local database retrieval framework, domain-specific fine-tuning of base models, and advanced tooling capabilities. Empirical tests demonstrate that PlanGPT has achieved advanced performance, delivering responses of superior quality precisely tailored to the intricacies of urban planning.

Intercity mobility reveals the hyperbolic geometry of city systems

The hierarchy and proximity are key dimensions of urban relational processes, but their interplay in shaping intercity interactions and the underlying structures of city systems remain unclear. We develop a novel geometric model of city systems embedding intercity mobility into a latent hyperbolic geometry, which unravels the measures of hierarchy and proximity accounting for their interplay. It is successfully validated against 12 different nationwide intercity mobility datasets. We find a bottom-up emergence of city hierarchies, along which the variations of city-hinterland relations are non-stationary in terms of their nesting and range properties. Such non-stationarity originates from trade-offs between city hierarchy and hinterland range in determining the formation of city-hinterland structures. Hierarchy- and proximity-dominated urban processes can be elucidated from examining dynamics of the trade-offs. The revealed urban relational processes of city systems are at the core of the emerging science of cities and crucial for spatial planning and regional policymaking.
