R2-Talker: Realistic Real-Time Talking Head Synthesis with Hash Grid Landmarks Encoding and Progressive Multilayer Conditioning

Zhiling Ye, LiangGuo Zhang, Dingheng Zeng et al.

Dynamic NeRFs have recently garnered growing attention for 3D talking portrait synthesis. Despite advances in rendering speed and visual quality, challenges persist in enhancing efficiency and effectiveness. We present R2-Talker, an efficient and effective framework enabling realistic real-time talking head synthesis. Specifically, using multi-resolution hash grids, we introduce a novel approach for encoding facial landmarks as conditional features. This approach losslessly encodes landmark structures as conditional features, decoupling input diversity, and conditional spaces by mapping arbitrary landmarks to a unified feature space. We further propose a scheme of progressive multilayer conditioning in the NeRF rendering pipeline for effective conditional feature fusion. Our new approach has the following advantages as demonstrated by extensive experiments compared with the state-of-the-art works: 1) The lossless input encoding enables acquiring more precise features, yielding superior visual quality. The decoupling of inputs and conditional spaces improves generalizability. 2) The fusing of conditional features and MLP outputs at each MLP layer enhances conditional impact, resulting in more accurate lip synthesis and better visual quality. 3) It compactly structures the fusion of conditional features, significantly enhancing computational efficiency.

Reconstruction and Reenactment Separated Method for Realistic Gaussian Head

Zhiling Ye, Cong Zhou, Xiubao Zhang et al.

In this paper, we explore a reconstruction and reenactment separated framework for 3D Gaussians head, which requires only a single portrait image as input to generate controllable avatar. Specifically, we developed a large-scale one-shot gaussian head generator built upon WebSSL and employed a two-stage training approach that significantly enhances the capabilities of generalization and high-frequency texture reconstruction. During inference, an ultra-lightweight gaussian avatar driven by control signals enables high frame-rate rendering, achieving 90 FPS at a resolution of 512x512. We further demonstrate that the proposed framework follows the scaling law, whereby increasing the parameter scale of the reconstruction module leads to improved performance. Moreover, thanks to the separation design, driving efficiency remains unaffected. Finally, extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments validate that our approach outperforms current state-of-the-art methods.

MFAGAN: A Compression Framework for Memory-Efficient On-Device Super-Resolution GAN

Wenlong Cheng, Mingbo Zhao, Zhiling Ye et al.

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have promoted remarkable advances in single-image super-resolution (SR) by recovering photo-realistic images. However, high memory consumption of GAN-based SR (usually generators) causes performance degradation and more energy consumption, hindering the deployment of GAN-based SR into resource-constricted mobile devices. In this paper, we propose a novel compression framework \textbf{M}ulti-scale \textbf{F}eature \textbf{A}ggregation Net based \textbf{GAN} (MFAGAN) for reducing the memory access cost of the generator. First, to overcome the memory explosion of dense connections, we utilize a memory-efficient multi-scale feature aggregation net as the generator. Second, for faster and more stable training, our method introduces the PatchGAN discriminator. Third, to balance the student discriminator and the compressed generator, we distill both the generator and the discriminator. Finally, we perform a hardware-aware neural architecture search (NAS) to find a specialized SubGenerator for the target mobile phone. Benefiting from these improvements, the proposed MFAGAN achieves up to \textbf{8.3}$\times$ memory saving and \textbf{42.9}$\times$ computation reduction, with only minor visual quality degradation, compared with ESRGAN. Empirical studies also show $\sim$\textbf{70} milliseconds latency on Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset.
